Dressing For a Cause: The Style Set's Fashionable, Philanthropic Weekend

By Justin Fenner

The industry loves nothing so much as throwing its weight behind a worthy cause, and this weekend, everyone from Diane von Furstenberg and Natalia Vodianova to Kate Moss and Taylor Tomasi Hill got dressed up to support one of three important evenings.

Friday night’s DVF Awards in New York honored women who strive to change the lives of other women around the world. Vodianova was honored with the Inspiration Award for her work with the Naked Heart Foundation, a charity she founded to help battle poverty in her native Russia.

Saturday night in Sao Paulo, Brazil, models including Kate Moss and Izabel Goulart gathered for amfAR’s Inspiration Gala. But back in the Big Apple, some of the biggest names in the business brought out their finest black-tie attire to attend the annual Save Venice masked ball, which drew a bevy of industry heavyweights like Prabal Gurung, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Kate Young. A look at all three events, here in the gallery.

The Continental: The Good, the Bad, and the Ho-Hum from the 2013 New York Auto Show

By Jens Meiners

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Another New York auto show has come and gone, and this year’s was a good one. Most manufacturers were present in the Big Apple last week, and there was a number of new vehicle launches. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf won World Car of the Year honors, and the Porsche Boxster/Cayman duo was voted World Performance Car. The Tesla Model S earned the World Green Car nod, while the Jaguar F-Type roadster took the well-deserved World Car Design of the Year award.

Consulting firm Prime Research surveyed the 66 World Car Awards jurors, a global group of motor journalists which includes myself, and came up with some interesting results. While connectivity and efficiency still rank among the most important topics worthy of coverage, E-mobility has most definitely fallen out of favor. It dropped to sixth—from third last year—out out of ten topics of focus.

Asked only about alternative powertrains, journalists ranked the most conservative approach—the plug-in hybrid—above the range-extended electric vehicle, reversing the two options’ rankings from last year. Only the plug-in hybrid was evaluated more positively than last fall, while ratings for the range-extended EV, fuel-cell-electric, and battery-electric dropped sharply. The media’s love affair with the EV—which I was never quite able to understand—seems to be over.

2012 Mini John Cooper Works Coupe - rear three-quarter view

Just before the New York show, BMW let a few journalists sample a prototype three-cylinder engine in a European 1-series hatchback body. Contributing editor Csaba Csere has already levied a thorough assessment of the technology, and I too liked the little engine—it is a cheerful, lively motor with a sporty exhaust note. BMW readily admits that the three’s 1.5-liter displacement is not ideal in terms of noise and vibration, but it is the best compromise for fuel economy. The three-banger is part of an engine family that will include four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. It might sound odd, but I found the three-cylinder engine to have more character than most four-cylinder engines. Bring it on. A quick side note: The upcoming BMW M4 and its four-door sister model, the M3, will get an engine based on the current N55 straight-six, not a member of this new engine family.

BMW rival Audi presented the A3 sedan, but not exactly at the show itself. Not wanting to spoil its own upcoming Shanghai show debut, Audi definitely wanted to spoil the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG‘s big reveal. So it put …read more

2013 World Car Award Winner Named In New York

By Kurt Ernst

As the name implies, the World Car Awards are a global venture, with automotive journalists from all over the world selecting the most impressive vehicles in multiple categories. Proving that New York is a world city (and that the New York Auto Show has global significance), the awards are typically handed out in the lead-up to the Big Apple’s premier automotive event.

There are currently four categories awarded, including World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car. Since the competition is global, it’s possible that winning vehicles won’t be sold in the North American marketplace.

That’s not the case for 2013, since we’ll be able to (eventually) purchase all the winning vehicles on these shores. Taking top honors as the World Car of the Year was the redesigned Mark VII Volkswagen Golf, which has already launched in Europe but won’t be seen here until 2014.

The win marks the second in a row for the German automaker, whose Volkswagen Up! took the top prize in 2012. The new VW Golf beat out some impressive challengers, including the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Porsche Boxster / Cayman and the Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT 86.

Don’t feel bad for the Porsche Boxster / Cayman, however, as it took top honors in the World Performance Car category, beating the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and the Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT 86 in the process.

The Jaguar F-Type was chosen as the World Car Design of the Year, over the new Mazda6 and the Aston Martin Vanquish, while the Tesla Model S too first place in the World Green Car category, beating the Renault Zoe and the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid.

New York: Nissan NV200 Mobility Taxi adds a dose of accessibility to the new-look cab

By Seyth Miersma

Nissan NV Mobility van in taxi livery - live at 2013 New York Auto Show

Filed under:

Nissan has been making hay with its NV200 light commercial vehicle in New York. We’ve known since last year that the van will see service as a taxi in the Big Apple, and more recently, we learned that a variant will be kicking around to rescue ailing Gibson guitars. At its press conference this year, Nissan continued the onslaught with a wheelchair-accessible version of its NV200 Taxi.

The automaker has teamed with BraunAbility – a company that styles itself as the world’s largest maker of wheelchair-accessible vans – to create this NV200 Mobility Taxi. The cab features a fold-flat ramp for rearward wheelchair accessibility, as well as a restraint system to keep said chair snugly in place at speed.

In addition to showing off the Mobility Taxi, Nissan announced at its press conference that it will be making both hybrid and fully electric versions of the NV200 Taxi available, as well. Scroll down for the Nissan press release, or take some time with our extensive live and stock image galleries of the NV200 Mobility Taxi.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro: If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It—Much [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Austin Lindberg

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Debuting at the 2013 New York auto show, Chevrolet’s 2014 Camaro refresh consists of three or four relatively minor changes. But that simple statement isn’t quite fair to the people behind the bow-tie pony car. Just last year, Chevy upgraded the interiors of the entire Camaro lineup, upgraded dampers and anti-roll bars on V-8–powered models to reduce understeer, and introduced the SS 1LE package and the ZL1 convertible. Besides, the Camaro team probably had its hands full engineering the all-new 500-hp, LS7-powered Z/28 that also dropped in the Big Apple.  READ MORE ››

New York: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG takes a bite out of the Big Apple

By Zach Bowman

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG

Filed under:

Let’s get the necessaries out of the way. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG has debuted at the 2013 New York Auto Show, and it brought a 355 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to the party. With 332 pound-feet of torque, Mercedes-Benz says the engine is the “most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder production engine” with a power density of 178 hp per liter.

All that muscle gets pushed to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. As a result, the 2014 CLA45 AMG can click off a 4.5-second 0-60 miles per hour run on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Giddyup.

And that’s to say nothing of just how terminally sexy this machine is. While the base car is attractive enough, seeing a properly aggressive AMG front fascia, massive wheels and a proper ride height has done nothing but improve on the sedan’s aesthetics.

AMG swapped the stock suspension for stiffer bits, including more rigid bearings and stiffer steering knuckles up front and an all-new four-link rear axle design. Interested? Mercedes says the CA45 AMG will be on sale this spring for $47,450.

Check out the full press release below for more information, and stay tuned for live shots from the show floor.

America, Is NYC-Style “Gun Control” In YOUR Future?

By Charles Thomas Galbraith

Gun Control SC America, is NYC Style “Gun Control” in YOUR Future?

In NYC, any masochist can apply for a gun permit. The labyrinthine, invasive, and expensive vetting process was designed by bureaucratic sadists to discourage the general public from ever attempting it. On that level, it works.

Even applicants who pass extensive background investigations can ultimately be rejected for reasons that are not explained and for which there is no appeal. Moreover, if you get turned down, that fact alone can be used against you in unrelated matters.  And just so you know, if you are an average upstanding American citizen with a clean record seeking a ‘concealed carry’ permit, your chances are zero to none.

Not surprisingly, cops and criminals possess the majority of handguns here in Fun City. Permits are carefully meted out to the political class, celebrities, bodyguards, P.I.s, and the well-connected. Don’t let the hand-wringing liberal politicians pull the wool over your eyes:  Bloomberg’s ‘gun control’ in NYC is the future of the nation if he and the Obamas and Feinsteins prevail on watering down the Constitution, inch by inch.

Once the Second Amendment becomes a holey dishrag, stripping local law enforcement of their weapons will be the likely next step for “progressives,” just like in England. The police already carry the weight of endless oversight and immediate accountability for the thankless task of taking down some of the most violent, recidivist criminals in the country.  And, God forbid, imagine if a cop must use a weapon in the process, particularly in their own self-defense?

For instance, when an NYPD officer shoots anyone today, the first questions asked by the press and lawyers are not “Are you all right?” but “Did the “victim” have a gun? Did you see him fire it? Where is it now?” Sadly, establishing the race of the cop and the ‘victim’ are one of the first ‘issues of concern’ of all parties involved. If the cop is even asked if he’s unharmed, it’s likely by another cop.

Whenever police officers shoot and kill a suspect here, there’s almost always an outcry from the liberal media, racial “spokesmen,” and, of course, the ACLU. When criminals use their weapons against cops, the excuses and rationalizations are equally predictable and prepackaged. If the cops are white, immediate accusations of racism follow. If the cops are black or Hispanic, police brutality is suggested.

So America, here’s a cautionary word from the Big Apple. If you live beyond the boundaries of this city and state, just an average guy or gal enjoying uncorrupted rights to own legal firearms, stay where you are. Do not come here. Make sure those reasonable gun laws where you live are maintained, for the sake of our Constitution and your own self-preservation.

NYC is your future without those protections. Recognizing gun permits issued in other states, even in the rest of NY State – legally called ‘reciprocity’ – does not exist in this city or state.  If you are found in possession of a firearm here, no matter how legal or vetted you or your weapons are …read more

Video: Blue Lamborghini Aventador flambées eyeballs on New York City school run

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Regardless of how unsure we are of the back story in this video, we don’t doubt how cool it would be to get picked up from [insert place here] in a Lamborghini Aventador. In this case, the driver says he picks up his former neighbor’s daughter from New York-area high school in an Aventador, and with most of us heading to the Big Apple tomorrow for the New York Auto Show, we’re wondering if this guy might be available to shuttle us from the airport to the hotel. It never hurts to ask.

After picking her up, they then head for a quick tour of Times Square with a trio of GoPro cameras recording the whole thing… missing out on a great opportunity to catch about five minutes of Aventador exhaust note, the video, for some reason, pipes in some awful background music. What is entertaining are the reactions that people have to seeing the car – whether from kids or adults – as the car has a magnificently beautiful Azure Blue paint job.

Scroll down to watch the video, but beware, there is some foul language involved.
