What Chris Claremont Thought of The Wolverine

The Wolverine “Japan” saga has been a long time coming to the big screen. Written by Chris Claremont and with pencils by Frank Miller, the1982 miniseries has often been cited by Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine story he’s most wanted to see on the big screen. And now Jackman (and we) have got just that with The Wolverine. But what does Claremont, the longtime X-Men writer, think of the film version of his tale? (Watch out for spoilers.)

“The first two acts were kick-ass, and they set this up to be a really exceptional, different movie,” Claremont tells Vulture. “It was like the film took this giant step forward. I liked that it focuses on the essence of who Wolverine is and what he does. Hugh Jackman is eloquent, and he owns the character at this point. It’s a surprisingly multidimensional performance.”

‘Wolverine’ Review: Hugh Jackman In A Tub, And A Little More

By The Huffington Post News Editors

— Don’t get us wrong. We don’t mean to take anything away from the more substantial qualities of “The Wolverine,” a fairly satisfying if not stellar installment in the saga of the famous mutant that Hugh Jackman’s been playing since, wow, 2000. (For a little perspective, Bill Clinton was still president.)

But let’s just point out that Jackman bares it all in a brief but memorable scene in a bathtub, and the studio would be wise to advertise this scene as much as possible. Because Wolverine is all about Jackman, and not only is the actor in amazing shape, but he’s funny in the scene, too. So why not flaunt it?

The Wolverine Review

By Scott Collura

With his return to the title role of The Wolverine for the sixth time (with a seventh film now shooting), Hugh Jackman has proven that there’s plenty of life left in the most famous X-Man. Unburdened by the type of reservations or fears that some other filmmakers and actors seem to have about the comic-book characters they’re adapting, Jackman once again goes full in, embracing the Logan that fans first fell in love with in the pages of the X-Men. The result is, finally, the Wolverine movie we’ve always wanted.

Director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line) and his screenwriters smartly avoid the clutter of mutants and other pitfalls of the character’s first solo film, creating a tale that is equal parts inspired by a classic storyline from the comics, a continuation of the X-Men film series, and a separate adventure all its own. Much like the character himself, The Wolverine is lean, mean, and fun.

Comic-Con: Days of Future Past Plans

20th Century Fox has been coy about what sort of presence the X-Men franchise will have at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con. The Hollywood Reporter recently confirmed that The Wolverine will be there at Saturday’s Fox presentation, and now a new report claims that, as suspected, X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the panel’s “secret” film.

According to Vulture, “the Bryan Singer–helmed film will be sending over a dozen cast members to San Diego to tease the ambitious sequel.” We already know Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, and Peter Dinklage will already be at Comic-Con for, respectively, The Wolverine, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, True Blood, The Following, and Game of Thrones. So that leaves the likes of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Evan Peters, Nicholas Hoult, Omar Sy, Daniel Cudmore, and Lucas Till, who Bryan Singer revealed via Twitter is reprising his First Class role of Havok (see the pic Singer tweeted below).

Hugh Jackman Wants Wolverine in The Avengers

“Why isn’t Wolverine in the Avengers movie?!” It’s a cry heard ’round the world on a regular basis, though most fans are aware that the answer is relatively simple: The Avengers screen rights belong to Marvel while the X-Men characters live with Fox. But Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, has hopes that the two parties could come to terms someday and give us the ultimate superhero crossover film.

Here’s what Jackman told Collider this week when asked what it would take to get the characters to meet onscreen:

“I literally asked the same question the other day to Tom from Marvel who works with all the other studios, he works with Sony and Fox, that’s his job to liaise. I said, ‘Man, can this happen?’ and he goes ‘Look, it’s not gonna be easy because you’re working with different studios and they’re their properties.’ But I believe — maybe I’m optimistic, I understand at Marvel they’ve got The Avengers, they’ve got a lot of big things going on, but at some point I just find it almost impossible that there’s not a way to bring Iron Man, all the Avengers characters, Wolverine, the X-Men characters, Spider-Man, and somehow get them in together.”

Who is the X-Men Sequel's Mystery Villain?

The casting announcements continue to pile up for 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. This latest X-Men sequel will bring back many series veterans to reprise their roles as it unites both the present-day timeline of the original trilogy and the flashback period of X-Men: First Class. But the newest casting is interesting not because it involves a familiar face like Hugh Jackman or Patrick Stewart, but instead a newcomer to the X-Men franchise: Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is joining the ever-growing cast of Days of Future Past. Because of his short stature, the obvious assumption was that Dinklage would be playing Canadian superhero and Wolverine’s drinking buddy Puck…

But according to a new rumor, Dinklage is actually playing the mystery villain of the movie, and there may be a heavy reliance on motion capture and CG for his character. Who could this villain be? Which X-Men foe is tied to the rise of the Sentinels and can threaten our heroes at two key points in their history? As always, we have a few ideas, so we’ve picked 10 X-Men villains that might fit the bill. Read through our picks and then let us know who you think Dinklage could be playing!

Bryan Singer Talks Storm, Nightcrawler

Bryan Singer is gearing up to stage a mutant reunion with X-Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to X-Men: First Class that will star everyone from Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence to Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman. Still, two former X-stars we’ve yet to hear about are Halle Berry and Alan Cumming — a.k.a. Storm and Nightcrawler.

But now Singer has addressed the status of those two mutants, and basically… he’s not sure if they’ll be back or not. When asked about Berry’s involvement in the film, he told MTV, “I can’t say. I don’t know yet. And it’s not necessarily a deal making aspect at all … I want to make sure it’ll make sense. But I love working with her.”
