‘The Wolverine’ Credits Scene: Director James Mangold Explains How It Came About

If you haven’t seen “The Wolverine” and are still planning to, this is where you’ll want to stop reading.

After “The Wolverine” story ends, there is a mid-credits scene that teases the next X-Men adventure, “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Since you’re only supposed to be reading this if you’ve seen “The Wolverine,” there’s no need to spoil the details of that scene, except to say that a couple of old friends from the past X-Men movies show up.

There’s been some speculation that Bryan Singer (who is directing “Days of Future Past”) directed the mid-credits scene — actually, as he confirms here, it was “The Wolverine” director James Mangold. (We resisted the tantalizing headline “Movie Director Directs Scene In The Movie He Directed.”) Though, Mangold did travel to Montreal (where “Days of Future Past” is being filmed) to film the extra scene and, here, discusses how it came about and how it ties together “The Wolverine” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

Comic-Con: Days of Future Past Plans

20th Century Fox has been coy about what sort of presence the X-Men franchise will have at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con. The Hollywood Reporter recently confirmed that The Wolverine will be there at Saturday’s Fox presentation, and now a new report claims that, as suspected, X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the panel’s “secret” film.

According to Vulture, “the Bryan Singer–helmed film will be sending over a dozen cast members to San Diego to tease the ambitious sequel.” We already know Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, and Peter Dinklage will already be at Comic-Con for, respectively, The Wolverine, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, True Blood, The Following, and Game of Thrones. So that leaves the likes of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Evan Peters, Nicholas Hoult, Omar Sy, Daniel Cudmore, and Lucas Till, who Bryan Singer revealed via Twitter is reprising his First Class role of Havok (see the pic Singer tweeted below).

Bryan Singer on the Potential of Tackling Star Trek

The news that J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII has many fans wondering what the future holds for the Star Trek cinematic franchise. Abrams has said he will stay on as a producer, but it’s almost certain he will have far too much on his plate to helm a potential sequel to the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness.

Naturally, fans have already started speculating on who might take over if there should be a third Star Trek film (which in all likelihood there will be). We recently spoke to Bryan Singer (X-Men), a self-professed Trekkie — he even had a cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis — and asked if he would consider taking on this franchise that has meant so much to him now that Abrams’ directorial duties are likely coming to a close.

Chris Claremont on X-Men: Days of Future Past

In a recent interview, famed X-Men writer Chris Claremont — whose co-creations include characters such as Rogue, Gambit, Emma Frost, Mystique and Sabertooth — offered his own two cents on Bryan Singer‘s upcoming comic book movie sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, adapted from Claremont’s own 1981 comics storyline of the same name.

“The challenge, I would think, for Bryan is that the heart of the original story is not the fight with the Brotherhood back in the present day,” Claremont told Newsarama. “The challenge, the story, is actually what happens in the future. Getting them to the point where you can send Kitty back, and seeing the consequences of what will happen if they fail, and not knowing at the end how it’s going to turn out. You think it’s going to be a happy ending, but you’re not sure, because pretty much everybody dies — in the comic, anyway.”

Bryan Singer on Jack The Giant Slayer

Director Bryan Singer‘s take on the classic fairy tale Jack the Giant Killer – better known as Jack and the Beanstalk and now titled Jack the Giant Slayer – opens in theaters this weekend. The tale follows Jack (Nicholas Hoult), a farm boy who must face his greatest fear, heights, in order to face-off against a once-mythical enemy and save his lady-love, Princess Isabelle (Elinore Tomlinson).

We had the opportunity to talk with Singer recently about his approach to the design of the film, and how he thinks today’s audience may relate to this childhood tale.

Singer Will Be “Fixing S**t” From X-Men 3

One of the big questions that fans have about Bryan Singer’s upcoming return to the cinematic X-Men universe, X-Men: Days of Future Past, is will this new film mean a return of some of the characters that we lost in the Brett Ratner directed X-Men: Last Stand? Specifically Scott Summers/Cyclops and Jean Grey. In general, there has been speculation about the changes that Singer may want to make to the choices that were made in that film. The director has said that he will not be ignoring any of the previous films, but there is the possibility of an alternate universe present in the Days of Future Past storyline which creates all kinds of interesting possibilities.

Singer: Dinklage’s Character Not CGI

Earlier today we spoke with X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer about his upcoming fantasy film Jack the Giant Slayer (stay tuned for more from that conversation). During our chat we also touched on his intentions for his reentry into the X-Men universe, which is set to go into production shortly.

One thing that’s had fans buzzing is the exact nature of Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage’s character in the film. When he was initially cast many believed he may be playing Wolverine’s Canadian cohort, fellow superhero and drinking pal, Puck. When we mentioned that it now seemed unlikely that Dinklage would indeed be playing the Alpha Flight hero Singer replied simply, “yeah.”

Dinklage Joins X-Men Sequel Cast

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage has joined the ever-growing ensemble cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Dinklage’s casting was announced by director Bryan Singer today via Twitter.

While Singer didn’t say what role Dinklage would play, it is a pretty safe bet he’s been cast as Puck, aka Eugene Judd, a member of Canada‘s superhero team Alpha Flight.

Puck was a dwarf with a cauliflower ear and an old friend of Wolverine’s from their days in Canadian intelligence. He is a hand-to-hand combatant and acrobat best known for his cartwheeling. Besides his work as a secret agent, Puck’s also been a bouncer and a soldier of fortune.

Shawn Ashmore Talks X-Men: Days of Future Past

It was announced at the tail end of last month that Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), Rouge (Anna Paquin) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) would all be joining the time bending reunion in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. We had the opportunity to speak with Ashmore recently about his role in FOX’s serial killer/cult series The Following, starring X-Men: First Class alum Kevin Bacon (Sebastian Shaw).

During the course of our conversation we were able to touch on his response to the X-Men news and a bit about what he thinks fans can expect from this latest addition to the franchise.

Bryan Singer Talks Days of Future Past

Recently, Bryan Singer shared a few more nuggets of info on the ever abuzz X-Men: Days of Future Past. To start, the director assured his fans that no stone was left unturned when it came to the highly anticipated time-travel crossover element.

“We’ve cracked it in a way that it makes sense,” Singer explained to Empire. “I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That’s why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible.”
