Hey Superheroes! Why so Serious?

Was I the only one who wanted Henry Cavill to smile more often in Man of Steel?

I wanted Amy Adams, who has proved she is hilarious in Enchanted and The Muppets, to crack a joke. I wanted Laurence Fishburne to take a leaf out of Lois and Clark’s Lane Smith in his Southern, Elvis-obsessed interpretation of Perry. I wanted a crooked smile. I yearned for a bit of self-awareness. I begged for good-natured cantankerousness.

But it was not to be. Instead, I got Russell Crowe floating around like a lost Shakespearean actor searching for his stage, and a tight-lipped Cavill carrying the weight of the world on his load-bearing shoulders, and Amy Adams sort of… running around. Very seriously.

Did Russell Crowe Spot a UFO?

Has the future Jor-El had a brush with a real-life Kryptonian? Russell Crowe tweeted earlier this week about a mysterious flash cutting across the sky above his office in Woolloomooloo, Australia. He also just so happened to have his Canon 5D camera set up at the time to capture fruit bats — right? — rising from botanical gardens.

The three photos he took during the event were spread 4.5 seconds apart and were posted on YouTube earlier today (see the video below). But was it really a close encounter, or just a trick of the light?

Who will save Rome's ruins in cash-strapped Italy?

By hnn

When archaeologists announced the discovery of the tomb of Marcus Nonius Macrinus in Rome in 2008, the find was heralded as the most important in decades. In contrast, the December 2012 announcement regarding the tomb was much more muted. Italy’s cash-strapped ministry of culture declared it was unable to find the several million euros that would be required to protect the ruins and turn them into a tourist attraction. Russell Crowe: Man of Steel Is Supersonic

Russell Crowe will soon make his debut as Jor-El, Superman’s biological father, in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel. And in a new interview, the actor spoke about Warner Bros.’ latest approach to the franchise and Snyder’s vision for the title character. Here’s what he had to say:

“It’s very complicated, it’s really complex,” he said. “I don’t think anybody has really tried to get into the psychology of what it must be like to be Superman and what people would really respond like in a modern society if somebody like that just popped up. I think Zack Snyder was given a great deal of responsibilty because when it comes to comic book heroes and superhero films the top of the food chain is Superman. I think the biggest indicator for me of how it’s looking is that the financier of the film has sent me gushing emails, he just loves it.
