Spy Shots: 2015 Subaru Legacy prototype caught testing Michigan

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The current Subaru Legacy is only three years old, but compared to rival midsize sedans like the Mazda6 and Ford Fusion, which have recently received thorough redesigns, it might as well be a million. In other words, a reworking is in order. Caught in these spy shots, the 2015 Subaru Legacy appears to be about the same size as the current model, but it appears that Subaru is looking to push the sedan a little more upmarket in terms of styling and luxury.

Despite the heavy camouflage, some elements of the new Legacy’s design are still visible. The new headlights still have a scalloped shape but are much narrower, and we can also see the deep body creases that run the full length of the sedan. At the rear of the new Legacy, the taillights should get some added depth with a C-shaped brake light design similar to what we saw on the WRX Concept earlier in the year.

Showing that Subaru is aiming a little bit higher for this Legacy, this car is being benchmarked against all-wheel-drive luxury vehicles like the current Infiniti G37 and the Audi Allroad – the latter is likely for comparison with the Legacy’s wagon version, the Outback. Following the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, we expect the 2015 Legacy to be the next Subaru product to get a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, which we hear will be paired with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a CVT and, of course, all-wheel drive.

No word as to when the 2015 Legacy will debut, but the New York Auto Show is as good a guess as any.

Read This: Is it time for American carmakers to give up on dual-clutch transmissions? [w/poll]

By Damon Lowney

Dual-clutch transmissions in plant

Filed under:

Last week, in the midst of Detroit’s first days seeking relief in Chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, Automotive News contributor Larry P. Vellequette penned an editorial suggesting that American car companies raise the white flag on dual clutch transmissions and give up on trying to persuade Americans to buy cars fitted with them. Why? Because, Vellequette says, like CVT transmissions, they “just don’t sound right or feel right to American drivers.” (Note: In the article, it’s not clear if Vellequette is arguing against wet-clutch and dry-clutch DCTs or just dry-clutch DCTs, which is what Ford and Chrysler use.) The article goes on to state that Ford and Chrysler have experimented with DCTs and that both consumers and the automotive press haven’t exactly given them glowing reviews, despite their quicker shifts and increased fuel efficiency potential compared to torque-converter automatic transmissions.

Autoblog staffers who weighed in on the relevance of DCTs in American cars generally disagreed with the blanket nature of Vellequette’s statement that they don’t sound or feel right, but admit that their lack of refinement compared to traditional automatics can be an issue for consumers. That’s particularly true in workaday cars like the Ford Focus and Dodge Dart, both of which have come in for criticism in reviews and owner surveys. From where we sit, the higher-performance orientation of such transmissions doesn’t always meld as well with the marching orders of everyday commuters (particularly if drivers haven’t been educated as to the transmission’s benefits and tradeoffs), and in models not fitted with paddle shifters, it’s particularly hard for drivers to use a DCT to its best advantage.

Finally, we also note that DCT tuning is very much an evolving science. For instance, Autoblog editors who objected to dual-clutch tuning in the Dart have more recently found the technology agreeable in the Fiat 500L. Practice makes perfect – or at least more acceptable.

What do you think? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.

Official: Honda reveals next-gen Fit Hybrid

By Chris Paukert

Filed under:

Psst! Remember late last month when we showed you those Japanese magazine scans purporting to show the next Honda Fit? The ones with the markedly more aggressive snout and Cuisinart-blade alloys? Yup, they were the real deal, but they weren’t the standard model, they were images of the new Hybrid. We know this because Honda has just released a handful of images and some details on its forthcoming gas-electric hatchback, and the images line up perfectly.

The big story for the third-generation Fit Hybrid will be the fuel economy, naturally (Honda says it has achieved economy ratings of 36.4 kilometers per liter – 86 miles per gallon – on its home-market cycle, highest among all hybrid models in Japan and a 35-percent improvement over the current Fit Hybrid, a model not sold in the US.

Interestingly, the Fit brooms the company’s underwhelming Integrated Motor Assist system in favor of a new single-motor e-assist system dubbed Sport Hybrid i-DCD, and it eschews a CVT like most hybrids in favor of a “dual clutch drive” (i-DCD) with seven speeds. The architecture can completely uncouple the 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine and the i-DCD’s 22-kilowatt electric motor. The motor itself is backed by a lithium-ion battery that’s integrated into the power unit, and Honda is also touting a new servo brake system and electric compressor that increases the efficacy of the regenerative braking while curbing engine load. The Fit Hybrid will be able to putter along at speeds of up to 31 mph in pure electric mode for 1.9 miles.

Automotive News reports that while the Fit Hybrid seen here isn’t expected to be sold in the US, the technology will come to America in the form of a subcompact sedan and crossover based on the Fit’s architecture as early as next year. The conventionally powered five-door Fit will be built in North America for the first time, and should hit dealers in the third quarter of next year. Built in Honda’s new Ceyala, Mexico plant, the US car is likely to be offered with a 1.5-liter direct-injection engine paired to a CVT, both new components in Honda’s Earth Dreams arsenal. A 1.3-liter port-injected powerplant is also expected to be fitted elsewhere in the world.

Official: Altima Coupe dead as Nissan charts the changes for 2014

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

The 2014 model year brings plenty of new designs and updates from Nissan – including the next-generation Rogue – but the Altima Coupe has been discontinued. The current generation of the Coupe won buyers over with sharp styling and, at one point, a 270-horsepower naturally aspirated V6 – the heart of the more upscale Infinity G37. It’s unlikely that Nissan plans to make another one, but keep in mind the current Coupe was released to the public about a year after the sedan hit dealerships.

The vehicles joining Nissan’s lineup for 2014 include the Versa Note hatchback, the NV200 Compact Cargo van and the next-generation Rogue compact SUV. Also new for 2014 is the Pathfinder Hybrid, but that will be added to the lineup in the fall.

Other models that are receiving enhancements are the sedan version of the Altima, which now comes standard with the CVT transmission and gets revised option packs; the Frontier, which gets updated option packs, enhanced navigation system functionality and a sliding middle rear window; the GT-R, which receives a bunch of small performance enhancements and, more importantly, initially will be offered in three versions (Premium, Black Edition and Track Edition), with another, limited special-edition model coming late in the year; the Versa sedan, all versions of which get 60/40-split fold-down rear seats and revised steering and suspension tuning; and last, but not least, the 370Z NISMO will have exterior accent color updates and a new steering wheel and tachometer.

There are plenty more details to be gleaned about Nissan’s model lineup for 2014, so be sure to read the press release below.

Ford and GM to Jointly Develop Nine- and Ten-Speed Automatic Transmissions

By Jens Meiners

The advent of seven- and eight-speed transmissions has changed drivers’ interactions with their cars. In the old days, we could determine which gear we were in based on speed, engine note, and the tachometer; and, if we were lucky enough to be driving a car with a stick or an automatic featuring a manual-shifting function, we could make a decision as to which gear would be necessary for an upcoming stretch of road. It was all part of the fun. But automakers seemingly have determined that seven or eight gears aren’t enough. As have Chrysler and others, GM and Ford have decided it is a good idea to equip future cars and trucks with nine- and ten-speed automatics, and that’s just what they plan to do.

Both companies have announced the joint development of slushboxes with nine and ten speeds for all vehicle classes and for front- and rear-wheel-drive applications. The cooperation is supposed to lower the cost of development and testing; it follows previous cooperation that focused on the development of six-speed automatics for front-wheel-drive vehicles. That team effort resulted in the six-speed automatics fitted in “some of America’s favorite vehicles,” as the joint press release gushes. This includes some of America’s least exciting vehicles, such as the Ford Explorer and the Chevrolet Malibu.

Nine- and ten-speed transmissions allow engineers to optimize their engines for smaller sections of the rev band; they can oscillate around an engine’s optimal point of efficiency, as does a—loathsome—CVT. Says GM’s transmission guru Jim Lanzon, “We expect these new transmissions to raise the standard of technology, performance, and quality for our customers while helping drive fuel-economy improvements into both companies’ future product portfolios.”

While the hardware will be largely identical, both Ford and GM will produce the slushboxes in their own production facilities. And the software application will differ “to ensure,” in the words of Ford’s driveline chief engineer Craig Renneker, “that each transmission is carefully matched to the individual brand-specific vehicle DNA for each company.”

We’ll get a taste of the “tremendous benefits” over the next few years, and we can’t help but wonder whether Ford and GM will even bother to offer a manual function for these boxes anymore; it would be little more than a cruel joke. The case for the old-fashioned manual has just become a lot stronger.

New York: 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid finally adds gas-electric option to the brand [w/video]

By Sebastian Blanco

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid - front three-quarter view, live on 2013 New York Auto Show stand

Filed under:

For a company that does a pretty great job of tying its vehicles to the environment – or, better said, to people who like to actually get out into the environment – Subaru hasn’t exactly been a leader in green vehicle production. In fact, it’s 2013 and the company is finally releasing its first-ever production hybrid, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. Tom Doll, Subaru’s executive vice president, admitted as much at the unveiling today at the New York Auto Show: “We at Subaru were not the first to market with a hybrid, but we sure made sure we did it right.”

That may be, but for now the automaker doesn’t want to tell us all the details of how right it is. We do know that the powertrain takes Subaru’s 2.0-liter boxer engine and adds in a 13.4-horsepower electric motor and continuously variable transmission. All-wheel drive will be, of course, standard, and Subaru promises the XV Crosstrek Hybrid will offer the “same utility and versatility as the gasoline model,” including 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The hybrid does weigh 300 pounds more, though, which required a re-engineered chassis.

The motor can move the lifted Impreza in all-electric mode up to 25 miles an hour (distance not specified). Subaru isn’t talking precise fuel economy numbers, either, just that it will be the “most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossover in America” and will unsurprisingly have start-stop functionality. We do hear, though, that the hybrid will get around 10-percent better fuel economy than the standard gas-only XV Crosstrek. The most efficient version of that car, the one with the CVT, gets 25 miles per gallon in the city, 33 highway and 28 combined. Whatever this hybrid XV Crosstrek gets, we expect Subaru’ll sell a million in Portlandia. For more, scroll down to watch an official video and read the press release.

Report: Audi settles CVT class-action suit over 2002-06 A4 failures

By Michael Harley

Filed under:
A class-action lawsuit, lodged against Volkswagen Group of America over alleged defects with the continuously variable transmissions (CVT) it put in 64,000 2002-06 Audi A4 and A6 models, has been settled. The German automaker has denied all allegations, telling the New York Times that it settled the case because it was “‘mindful of the fact that future protracted litigation, with the burdens and uncertainties it creates, may not be in the best interests of their customers.” (That said, the plantiff lawyers will receive about $2.4 million for fees and expense.)

What matters most to affected Audi owners is that the settlement bumps many parts of the original powertrain coverage (e.g., transmission control modules) from 4 years/50,000 miles to 10 years/100,000 miles for the original owner, and it will reimburse owners who paid for specific repairs if they occurred within the extended warranty coverage. The agreement also includes trade-in reimbursements for lost value if the vehicle was sold or traded with no repair. Excluded from the settlement are claims for personal injury, property damage or subrogation.

Quick Spin: 2013 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD

By Seyth Miersma

Filed under:

After spending some time roaming the Hill Country of central Texas with Mazda’s new Mazda6 and CX-5 with the 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine, I got a round with the redesigned CX-9 back in Michigan. The three-row Mazda crossover comes to court in the 2013 model year with the same 3.7-liter V6 engine that we’ve sampled before (still making 273 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque), though the nose that wraps it has been updated with the same “Kodo” design language that marks out the CX-5 and friends.

I had quite recently spent time in our long-term Nissan Pathfinder, so I felt better equipped than usual to suss out the potential high and low points of Mazda’s family-facing CUV.

Driving Notes

  • A combination of a responsive throttle pedal and a surprisingly lively exhaust note made the CX-9 feel immediately sportier than the CVT‘d Pathfinder I had just stepped out of. The Mazda’s six-speed automatic transmission was surprisingly willing to drop gears and pile on the revs when I put my foot to the floor for a pass on the highway, and I actually never really felt prodded to use the manual mode as a result. Don’t get me wrong, the CX-9 isn’t “fast” in an objective sense, but it definitely feels adequately powerful for a largish 4,500-pound crossover. (Those seeking real speed with three rows would still prefer the Ford Explorer Sport or Dodge Durango in V8 trim, I’d wager.)
  • True to form for Mazda, the CX-9 feels a shade sprightlier in terms of handling than does the bulk of its competitive set. Sitting in the drivers seat for the first time, I was actually a little shocked at how small in diameter the steering wheel is. Better yet, the front end of the large vehicle moves promptly when guided by this sporty wheel, turning in with a quickness that belies the long wheelbase, and offering a shade more road feedback than is typical of this class. I’m not sure how many buyers really care about a kind of “athletic” steering feel when selecting their next kid-wagon, but the Mazda would seem to be the top-of-class here.
  • Overall fit and finish of our CX-9 Grand Touring-spec interior felt nice – I particularly liked the kind of micro-suede door inserts – if a little bit simple. There’s still more hard-plastic surfacing in the CX-9 than I’d gotten used to in our long-term Nissan, and far fewer enticing pieces of technology. Mazda is offering a new-for-2013, 5.8-inch display with which to negotiate the navigation and media controls, but the interface simply serves to make the CX-9 feel slightly less out of date than it would with the older setup. And the Mazda didn’t have the near-luxury feeling that the plusher, gizmo-laden Pathfinder does.
  • There was more interruption from wind and tire noise in the CX-9 than in other similarly sized crossovers and SUVs I’ve been in lately, too. Just a shade louder, …read more

Mitsubishi G4 Concept Likely Hints at Next-Generation Mirage Sedan

By Andrew Wendler

Mitsubishi has released a single, highly processed image of its G4 concept, described as a sub-compact sedan, which we believe will preview the next-generation Mirage sedan. Set to debut at the 2013 Bangkok auto show, which runs concurrently with the New York auto show—where, coincidentally, the brand’s new Mirage hatchback is scheduled to debut—the G4 previews a global-market offering.

Mitsubishi says that inspiration for the grille, the headlamps, and the taillamps comes from diamonds, which actually is somewhat identifiable in this photo—well, that’s true for the grille and headlights, at least; we’ll have to wait until we see the concept’s rear end to make a final judgement on the taillights. The G4 features a short nose, and a character line that kicks up to the rear, with what appears to be a healthy serving of the requisite LEDs hiding behind the headlamp lens.

Powertrain specifics have been kept to a minimum, with Mitsubishi only saying that the concept packs a version of the automaker’s 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine mated to a CVT. Mitsubishi that the production version of the G4—whatever badge it wears—will be the lightest car in its segment, resulting in best-in-class fuel economy. That statement alone suggests that development on the G4 is well past the boardroom stage and into testing.

More information on the G4—and the Mirage—will become available later in the month, when we likely will have a better idea of Mitsubishi’s sub-compact plans.

Subaru issues recall over cars that may start themselves

By John Neff

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek - front three-quarter view, black

Filed under:

Subaru has issued one of the strangest recalls we’ve come across in some time. As it turns out, certain Subaru models may randomly start their own engines. The issue is confined to select models equipped with an automatic or CVT and the company’s optional Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. If the RES key fob is dropped, it could “randomly transmit an engine start request without pressing the button.”

Vehicles affected include the 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback with an automatic or CVT, 2012-2013 Impreza with the CVT, and 2013 XV Crosstrek with CVT (shown), all equipped with the Audiovox RES accessory. Likewise, certain 2013 Legacy and Outbacks may have received replacement RES fobs that could be affected. All told, 47,419 vehicles are included in the recall.

Should one of these cars start on their own, Subaru says they will run up to 15 minutes, but the vehicle may also continue to start and stop until either the battery in the fob dies or the car runs out of fuel. Of course, if one of these cars is parked in an enclosed area, that means harmful gasses could build up, which could be dangerous if inhaled.

The fix is an obvious one: Subaru will replace the RES fobs for free. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be notified by the end of April, though their car might let them know sooner.

Infiniti JX35, Now the QX60, Gains Hybrid Variant for 2014 [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

2013 New York auto show full coverage

Infiniti’s JX35 crossover only just hit the market this year, but already the automaker has announced a name change and the addition of a new hybrid model, which will debut at the 2013 New York auto show. The name change is hardly surprising—for 2014, all Infinitis will switch to the brand’s new Q-centric naming scheme, which sees every car model name start with a Q and every crossover and SUV moniker begin with QX. In the case of the JX, the crossover will henceforth be known as the QX60; the hybrid version, unsurprisingly, will carry the QX60 hybrid name. Why QX60? Because the smaller FX37/FX50 will become the QX50 and the larger QX56 becomes the QX70, that’s why.

The QX60 hybrid is pretty noteworthy considering it will be the first U.S.-market recipient of parent company Nissan’s next-generation four-cylinder-based hybrid system. The semi-exotic (for a hybrid, anyway) powertrain mixes a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The motor is sandwiched between the engine and a CVT, and a pair of clutches meter the electric motor’s contribution to the system. In the QX60 hybrid, a lithium-ion battery pack mounted beneath the third-row seat provides juice to the electric motor, and is replenished by way of a regenerative-braking setup.

Infiniti claims total output will be in the neighborhood of 250 horsepower, with the electric motor contributing 20 horsepower; the engine’s output hasn’t yet been revealed. Fuel-economy stands to improve by a claimed 24 percent over the regular, V-6–powered QX60, and Infiniti expects the hybrid will net 26-mpg combined. Final pricing has yet to be announced, but Infiniti is looking to ask for roughly $3000 more for the QX60 hybrid than for the gas-only model, which, barring any major price increases, should put the QX60′s base price just dearer than $45,000. More details will be revealed at the New York show later this month.

2014 Suzuki SX4: Suzuki Still Produces Autos, Just Not for Us [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Tony Swan

Despite Suzuki’s departure from the U.S. market, the company continues to be a player in other parts of the world, a fact underscored by the Geneva introduction of its new SX4 crossover. The SX4 has been one of Suzuki’s most popular offerings, and the latest iteration continues to be a five-passenger vehicle, based on a front-drive unibody platform, but it’s substantially bigger than the current model, with a much more contemporary look and upscale interior furnishings.

The SX4’s growth spurt results in a 4.0-inch longer wheelbase than the outgoing model at 102.4, and overall length extends by 6.5 inches to 169.3. Height, width, and track dimensions also expand, and the sum of the increases is sufficient to move the SX4 up one size classification, into the C segment. Those increased dimensions provide a bit more room for passengers, and a lot more room for luggage and/or cargo—15.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, versus 9.5 for the current SX4. And Suzuki anticipates a five-star European NCAP crashworthiness rating.

There are two engine choices, both 1.6-liter fours—a DOHC 16-valve gasoline update of the current M16A, and a turbo-diesel. Both engines are rated for 115 horsepower, but the diesel is the torque monster—236 lb-ft versus 115. The standard transmission with the gas-powered engine is a five-speed manual, while the oil-burner comes with a six-speed stick. A continuously variable transmission is the automatic option for both powerplants, and features paddle shifters with seven artificial steps to minimize CVT hunting.

Full-time all-wheel drive is an option with either engine, an update on Suzuki’s current system that the company calls ALLGRIP. It offers four driver-select operating modes—automatic, sport, snow, and lock, for particularly sticky going.

The new SX4 will be assembled in Magyar, Hungary, and is slated to reach the European market this fall. Pricing and fuel-economy projections were not disclosed, but based on what Suzuki did tell us, the SX4 seems to be a stylish small crossover that could well appeal to U.S. buyers. But that’s something we’ll never know for sure.

Geneva: 2013 Suzuki SX4 gets new generation to carry on without us [w/video]

By Steven J. Ewing

2013 Suzuki SX4 - live on show stand at 2013 Geneva Motor Show

Filed under:

Despite the fact that the coffin has been sealed on Suzuki’s US automotive arm, the brand is carrying on elsewhere in the world. The first new product to spearhead the Japanese automaker’s product offerings in Europe is this SX4 crossover, making its official debut here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. You may remember the little SX4 as the cheapest all-wheel-drive car on sale in the US, packing cute styling and efficient, affordable packaging. And it doesn’t appear that the formula has changed too much for this new generation, despite what we think are less attractive new duds derived from Suzuki’s 2012 S Cross Concept.

The new SX4 is powered by a choice of two 1.6-liter engines – one diesel, one petrol – the former mated to a six-speed manual transmission while the latter uses a CVT with a “seven-speed manual mode” operated by steering wheel-mounted paddles. All-wheel drive remains intact on the SX4, now with four driver-selectable modes and the Allgrip name.

Suzuki is touting the SX4 as having the world’s first double sliding glass sunroof, offering “the largest opening areas” in the segment. Overall, the updated interior looks nicely designed and quite functional, though not exactly a shining beacon of refinement.

Take a look at the new SX4 in our pair of high-res image galleries above and below, and scroll down to view the SX4 in action and check out the official press release.

Geneva: Subaru Viziv is a diesel hybrid crossover we could learn to love

By Chris Paukert

Subaru Viziv concept - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

With the 2013 XV Crosstrek, Subaru reaffirmed its interest in niche crossovers, and early signs are that it’s selling well, so will parent Fuji Heavy Industries green-light another one? That’s the question begged by the new Viziv concept just unveiled here at the Geneva Motor Show.

Of course, this is a pure showcar, and the four-seat crossover coupe’s drivetrain is suitably next-generation as well. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain system features a 2.0-liter diesel boxer engine mated to a CVT, and a pair of electric motors drive the rear wheels for a through-the-road all-wheel-drive system. By going with motor-driven rear axles, Subaru says it has been able to provide larger rear-seat footwell and lower load floor. More excitingly, Subaru says its control systems allow for side-to-side torque vectoring for improved handling, and the system actually apportions more power to the rear wheels when the Viziv takes a corner.

In typical concept car fashion, the Viziv features flashy butterfly doors that provide access to both the front and rear seats, along with oversized 20-inch wheels and cutting-edge lighting. We like the Viziv’s overall design direction – it looks more organic and all-of-a-piece than we’re used to seeing from the Japanese automaker.

Nissan has announced pricing for the 2013 NV200, which made its production-spec debut at the 2013 Chicago auto show. The compact commercial van will start at $20,835, and Nissan also released the van’s final technical specs, including engine-output and fuel-economy figures.

The NV200 is designed to go head-to-head with the likes of Ford’s Transit Connect, which will be completely new for the 2014 model year. (The Nissan is essentially a four-year-old design that’s been sold in only slightly different forms in other markets since 2009.) Final output figures for the NV200 stand at 131 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque, and power is routed to the front wheels through a CVT. Even though power and torque figures for the new Transit Connect have yet to be released, the Ford will offer a choice of a 2.5-liter four and a turbocharged 1.6-liter four. Both likely will be more powerful than the Nissan’s single mill and do their work through a six-speed automatic.

2013 Nissan NV200

The Nissan’s 2.0-liter/CVT combo is good for 24 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway; again, the Ford’s efficiency is forthcoming, but the outgoing model touted EPA ratings of 21/27 mpg. The NV200′s city efficiency is quite good for a nonhybrid van, which bodes well for the New York taxi companies that will be forced to buy NYC’s Taxi of Tomorrow. (Other municipalities can buy them, too.)

2013 Nissan NV200

Nissan is offering the NV200 in two trim levels—S and SV—and both will be quite affordable, if sparsely equipped. There are several options, including cruise control ($200); back-door privacy glass ($190); Bluetooth connectivity ($250); an Exterior Appearance package ($190), which paints the bumpers, doorhandles, and mirrors body color; and a Technology package ($950), which includes navigation, Nissan’s RearView camera, satellite radio, and a 5.8-inch touch screen. Full pricing and option availability is as follows:

NV200 S: $20,835, includes two-speaker audio system, power windows, and 15-inch steel wheels; cruise control, back-door privacy glass, and Bluetooth available.

NV200 SV: $21,825, includes power door locks with keyless entry, power and heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, six cargo-area hooks, and full wheel covers; back-door privacy glass, Bluetooth, Exterior Appearance package, and Technology package available.

At the start of the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan drops a few new performance enhancements to the 2014 370Z, 2013 Juke and 2014 GT-R. The 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo will receive some tweaks featuring a sportier look outside, interior accents including an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and carrying over the 3.7-liter 350-horsepower V6 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission w/ the synchronized rev-match downshifting system.

The new 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo joins the 2014 370Z Nismo to get the special NISMO treatment. The Juke Nismo gets over 100 separate performance, exterior and interior modifications. Among these enhancements, the new Juke Nismo gets NISMO-tuned suspension, steering and transmission mapping. Probably the best aspect of the Nismo-Tuned Juke, is that it gets increased power from its 1.6-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine making 197 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to the stock 188 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission or CVT unit will be available as well as an all-wheel drive system.

Saving the best for last, as expected because Godzilla never stands still, the new 2014 Nissan GT-R gets an added “Track Edition” option available to the lineup. The Track Edition GT-R will feature the same 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque twin-turbocharged V6 engine and lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission. With the Track Edition, the GT-R loses its rear seats to save weight, more aggressive sports seats up front, integrated carbon fiber front splitter with special brake cooling ducts and a re-tuned suspension with special Bilstein DampTronic shocks ideal for track use.

Chicago: 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo is the runabout we've always wanted

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

The 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo has officially bowed at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Wearing a full body kit that serves up 37-percent more downforce than the standard front and rear fascias, the tuned hatchback also comes equipped with larger 18-inch wheels and a lowered suspension. Up front, LED daytime running lights join the festivities as well as contrasting side-view mirror covers and wider fender flares. Inside, buyers can expect to find a new sports steering wheel clad in Alcantara, as well as a set of Nismo seats stitched with red accents.

Nismo also cranked up the power on the Juke’s turbocharged direct-injection 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The Juke Nismo delivers 197 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to the 188 hp and 177 lb-ft available in stock configuration. Buyers can have the engine with either a six-speed manual transmission or CVT gearbox, and the Juke Nismo can also be had with either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. Check out the full press release below for more information.

Report: This is the facelifted Suzuki SX4 that we won't get

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Suzuki SX4 facelift

The car you see above is, according to China Car Times, the facelifted Suzuki SX4 crossover. We’ve always had a soft spot for the SX4, so the fact that it’s finally getting a significant update makes us a wee bit sad – after all, Suzuki just announced late last year that it’s leaving the US market, so we’ll never get this upgraded little ‘ute on our shores.

Changes we can see include aggressively resculpted lighting units, interesting mold lines on the front bumper cap, redesigned air intakes and unique trim fillets on the doors.

At least we can take solace in the fact that there apparently aren’t any significant alterations under the new bodywork, so our crop of used SX4s should be just as capable out on the road. In China, Suzuki’s 1.6- and 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines are expected to carry over to the new year, along with the current model’s CVT and manual drivelines.

Here’s hoping Suzuki finds more success in China than it did in the States.

The Continental: BMW Sells Husqvarna, An Electric City Car, Goodbye to the C6, and a Bad VW Group Decision

By Jens Meiners

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

BMW C evolution

BMW has sold off Husqvarna to the Austrian Pierer Industrie AG, which owns motorcycle-maker KTM. The Bavarians had bought the (originally) Swedish company in 2008 and never achieved the sales and financial targets that were set with the purchase. Now BMW is serving up a politically correct explanation, saying that the realignment of its motorcycle business without Husqvarna will focus on “urban mobility and e-mobility.” It kind of reminds me of the reasoning in 2009 for pulling out of F1, in which reasons of “sustainability and environmental consciousness” were cited.

BMW has announced it is expanding its remaining motorcycle presence with an electric scooter called C Evolution and also talks of “further innovative vehicle concepts.” Perhaps the time is right for something like BMW’s C1, the Bertone-built city scooter sold between 2000 and 2003. It offered partial weather protection and was conceived as an alternative to city cars, but only sold in low numbers and was yanked from the market prematurely.

Technical University of Munich Visio.M

Meanwhile, work is progressing on the Visio.M, an electric city vehicle developed by the Technical University of Munich with assistance from consortial leaders BMW, Daimler, and a number of suppliers and public entities. The passenger cell will be made of carbon fiber, and it will be powered by a asynchronous electric motor coupled to an extremely lightweight transmission. Anti-lock brakes are standard, as is a torque-vectoring system. It is an interesting project, but I know for a fact that it does not rank highly on BMW’s list of priorities. The Visio.M is a tiny vehicle, and as of today, there are no plans to integrate it into BMW’s model range—ever.

Citroën C6

Adieu, C6!

It has been over a month, but this deserves mention: The Citroën C6 is history, and the last one rolled off the assembly line in December. Based on the smaller C5 sedan, the C6 was a car that was compromised in many ways. I have tested several of them over the years, and while the air suspension provided a generally good ride, it was jittery over smaller bumps; the steering was utterly overboosted, Cadillac XTS–style; and the frameless side windows tended to be pulled out of their guides at over 130 mph. To get them fully up again, you needed to slow down to 80 mph. In 2009, the C6′s gasoline V-6 was killed, somewhat disingeniously leaving the luxurious Citroën only with diesel engines.

Citroën C6 interior

What’s more, the C6 is a prime example of how not to launch a car. The C6 Lignage—which previewed the design of the production C6—was shown in 1999, a full six years before the car went on sale. Offered at a far higher price point, it never matched the success of its predecessor, the angular and futuristic XM.

On the plus side, the C6 was a daring design, evoking memories of the classic Citroën DS and CX sedans. Its interior was stunning, with details such as gliding covers in the doors, and generously applied Mukonto wood, the sort used by the Zulu tribe to make spears. Far from perfect, the C6 had character. I liked it.

SEAT Ibiza Cupra

SEAT’s Flawed Hot Hatch

The hot hatch segment is in full bloom again in Europe. The latest entry is the SEAT Ibiza Cupra, a sister model to the Volkswagen Polo GTI with a 180-hp, turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-liter engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Sadly, no manual is offered. Come on, in this class? Surely, there should be enough volume in the sporty versions of the Ibiza (and the architecturally similar Audi A1, Škoda Fabia, and VW Polo), to justify the application of a six-speed manual, like in their lesser siblings. It’s a good thing that PSA still offers two vehicles in this class with a manual: The Citroën DS3 Racing and the Peugeot 208 GTi. I’ll take one of those over an automatic VW Group car any time.

2013 Honda Accord

Sampling an American Favorite

It was interesting to spend some time behind the wheel of the U.S.-market Honda Accord. For over a decade, the European and American Accord models have been different vehicles. American customers get a variation of the European Accord in the form of Acura’s TSX. I sampled the U.S. Accord in all available engine and transmission configurations, and my hands-down favorite, unsurprisingly, was the V-6 coupe equipped with the manual transmission. It handled so well and sounded so sweet that I would consider it against a 3-series coupe or Audi A5. It’s less of a love affair with the CVT, which seems to reflect a little too long before actually performing the belt adjustments needed for acceleration. The standard inline-four is surprisingly silky, the body is tight, and the suspension is competent, almost BMW-like, under spirited driving.

2013 Honda Accord interior

When you look closely at the Accord, you can see some cost-cutting, like the exposed trunk hinges. And I don’t get the instrument panel, which is a garbled assemblage of buttons and monitors. There are many ways to enter data into the navigation system, none of which works intuitively. And the styling? It is better than the previous generation, which displayed a jarring disconnect between the front end and the rest of the car, but I wouldn’t call it exciting. Nevertheless, I am not surprised at the Accord’s popularity among Americans. The too-innocent skin hides a chassis and an engine that tease you to play.
