Spy Shots: 2015 Subaru Legacy prototype caught testing Michigan

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The current Subaru Legacy is only three years old, but compared to rival midsize sedans like the Mazda6 and Ford Fusion, which have recently received thorough redesigns, it might as well be a million. In other words, a reworking is in order. Caught in these spy shots, the 2015 Subaru Legacy appears to be about the same size as the current model, but it appears that Subaru is looking to push the sedan a little more upmarket in terms of styling and luxury.

Despite the heavy camouflage, some elements of the new Legacy’s design are still visible. The new headlights still have a scalloped shape but are much narrower, and we can also see the deep body creases that run the full length of the sedan. At the rear of the new Legacy, the taillights should get some added depth with a C-shaped brake light design similar to what we saw on the WRX Concept earlier in the year.

Showing that Subaru is aiming a little bit higher for this Legacy, this car is being benchmarked against all-wheel-drive luxury vehicles like the current Infiniti G37 and the Audi Allroad – the latter is likely for comparison with the Legacy’s wagon version, the Outback. Following the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, we expect the 2015 Legacy to be the next Subaru product to get a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, which we hear will be paired with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a CVT and, of course, all-wheel drive.

No word as to when the 2015 Legacy will debut, but the New York Auto Show is as good a guess as any.

Spy Shots: 2014 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible caught naked in the wild

By Seyth Miersma

2014 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible spy shot - top up - silver

Filed under:

While we had our first genuine look at the 2014 Camaro SS back at the New York Auto Show this spring, we hadn’t yet gotten a glimpse of the droptop version of the pony car, until now.

Nabbed near Chevy’s home turf in beautiful Milford, MI, the ’14 Camaro SS Convertible looks ready for prime time as-is. We’ll be honest: From the shoulder-line up, this new Camaro looks almost identical to the outgoing car, with no apparent changes to the folding soft top or rakish A-pillars. Below the waist, the convertible shares the revised front hood, nose and revamped rear treatment with the SS coupe.

This particular SS Convertible is wearing a new set of 20-inch five spoke wheels, as well as a beefy quad exhaust setup out back. Sharp-eyed readers will also notice that the Chevy test driver isn’t terribly pleased with getting his picture taken. Gentle souls should avert their eyes for images four and five of our gallery…

Report: Ford Mustang returning to Australia in 2016

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper has reported that the next-generation Ford Mustang is heading Down Under in 2016, just as Ford is hanging the “Closed for Good” sign on its Australian manufacturing operations and sending the Falcon to its grave. Ford hasn’t offered any official word on the matter, but the paper says that Ford’s global VP of sales and marketing, Jim Farley, is flying to Australia to make the announcement himself.

While Ford converted Mustangs in the early 2000s from left-hand to right-hand drive for the Australian market and then sold them at high prices, it’s been almost five decades since Ford imported a dedicated right-hand-drive Mustang to Oz. The arrival of the global model specifically made for places like Australia and the UK means Ford will also be able to offer them at better prices than the converted models; the Herald Sun says the price is expected to be “close to $50,000.”

And that’s for one of the “V8 performance models,” which are the only ones Australia will get; Ford apparently won’t send the turbocharged four cylinder or the V6. The Aussies could find out in a month from now whether this rumor is true. We will all find out what this Mustang fuss is about when the car debuts at next year’s New York Auto Show.

Spy Shots: Next-gen Subaru WRX STI spotted at the Nürburgring

By Zach Bowman

2015 Subaru WRX STI Spy Shots

Filed under:

Subaru has been busy testing the next-generation WRX STI. Well, it may be the STI. The big wing out back lends some credence to that theory, but it could be that the basic WRX is getting new action in the back section. Time will tell.

In either case, spy photographers nabbed a few shots of the heavily camouflaged sedan running around the Nürburgring. Unfortunately, it looks as if Subaru has taken some of the sexy out of the WRX Concept we saw at the New York Auto Show, leaving this car looking more derivative of the current model than a revolution in design. The bold power bulge has disappeared from the vehicle’s hood and the lower fascia looks far more demure than the the wild concept. Likewise, the muscular rear fenders have been toned down substantially.

The result is a car that looks more like a mildly warmed over version of the current model than a production version of the WRX Concept. Still, engineers and designers may have a long way to go before the finished product hits the market, so we’ll reserve final judgement for now. After all, the early BRZ mules were nothing short of a travesty to look at, and we know how that turned out. Hope springs eternal.

Video: WRX Concept gets walkaround with Subaru design boss Osamu Namba

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The Subaru WRX Concept was the only concept car to be mentioned among our Editors’ Choice favorites for New York Auto Show debuts this year – snagging the No. 3 spot nonetheless – due to what it could mean to the future of Subaru if it indeed becomes a reality. Now that we’ve caught our breath from walking countless miles through the Javits Center, Subaru has released a brief video of design boss Osamu Namba describing some of the exterior styling elements of the sporty concept sedan.

While this video is just your basic walkaround that gives no mention of the concept’s inspiration or what we can expect from the next-generation WRX, it is still fun to watch Namba explain many of the car’s design elements including the more aggressive face, the quadruple exhaust outlets and the signature flared wheel arches and side outlet fender vents. If you liked the WRX Concept as much as we did, scroll down to watch this short video.

Report: Shelby boosts production of 575-hp Raptor on early demand

By Michael Harley

Shelby-tuned 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor - live at New York Auto Show reveal

Filed under:

Shelby American unveiled its all-new Shelby Raptor at the New York Auto Show last month, saying that it would build just 100 examples of its off-road bad boy, a pickup priced at $17,995 over the cost of the donor Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. But the Las Vegas outfit apparently underestimated just how popular the supercharged 575-horsepower 4×4 would actually be.

Strong early demand reportedly has Shelby singing a whole new tune, as the company is now saying it will build upwards of 500 units annually. While the increased production will likely make for at least 400 more happy owners, those who were on the original short list – possibly speculating on future values – might not be grinning as much. Needless to say, the company has assured everyone that each and every one of the modified Raptors will still be listed in the official Shelby registry.

Keep in mind that Ford isn’t sitting idle on its trophy-truck-for-the-street, either. The company will reveal its own 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition this month.

Report: VW's Browning says TN workers to decide whether they want union

By Zach Bowman

Filed under:

Jonathan Browning, Volkswagen North America CEO, has said that workers at the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee manufacturing facility will decide if they want union representation. Browning made the comment while speaking to reporters at the New York Auto Show, according to Reuters. Browning also made it clear that the United Auto Workers isn’t the only option open to employees at the plant.

“If employees vote in favor of formal representation, then it’s important to understand that there are a number of alternatives that may or may not include the UAW,” Browning said.

Technically, the company hasn’t scheduled a vote on unionization at the Chattanooga factory, but Browning says the company is in the early stages of discussions on the matter. The automaker’s board has not discussed the topic in an official capacity.

If the workforce does decide to join the UAW, it would be the first foreign-owned plant to do so. The union has been courting plants owned by foreign automakers for years, but has never managed to sway workers.

Report: Cadillac mulling CTS Coupe successor after all

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

The 2014 Cadillac CTS made a big splash last week at the New York Auto Show, but now that we’ve seen the sedan, we can start to wonder about whether coupe and wagon versions are in the cards. According to Edmunds, Cadillac is at least considering bringing back the CTS Coupe for a second generation, which seems like an even better chance since the brand’s global marketing director, Jim Vurpillat, was quoted as saying that the car was the top-selling luxury coupe in the industry.

Of course, this goes against reports we heard last year that Caddy’s coupe and wagon would live on just not under the CTS name, but the interview with Vurpillat has us hopeful for a next-generation CTS Coupe. If it does come to fruition, we would expect the new two-door to have a largely unique exterior design like the current CTS Coupe, to echo that of intended rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and even the high-dollar BMW 6 Series.

Official: 2014 Range Rover Sport configurator reveals new option pricing

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

While we knew the starting price of the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport before it was even introduced last week at the New York Auto Show, we’re now getting a better idea about how much it will cost to option up Land Rover‘s middle child. The automaker has launched the configurator for this new SUV, but as of right now, it only provides options for the base SE V6 model.

Starting at $63,495 (including $895 destination), the 2014 Range Rover Sport offers an entirely new batch of options from the current model, such as a seven-passenger seating arrangement, new safety and driving technology and a new package to make the SUV a more serious off-roader. Some of the new tech includes the $2,210 Vision and Convenience Package offering surround camera, blind spot monitor and park assist, while the new adaptive cruise control system (with low-speed operation) will run $1,295.

A key selling point for the new Range Rover Sport will likely be the “occasional use” 5+2 seating configuration adding another $2,750 to the bottom line, and the Extra Duty Package will bring a two-speed transfer case and automatic Terrain Response for $1,300. Other options include $2,000 for rear seat entertainment, $1,950 for Meridian Premium Audio and $2,100 for the Climate Comfort and Visibility Package, which delivers heated front and rear seats, heated windshield, adaptive headlights and a 16-way power driver’s seat.

All in, the base Range Rover Sport SE can be optioned up to $77,850 – not including dealer-installed items – which is just about $2,000 less than the entry price for the Supercharged V8 model. Want more? Feel free to visit the configurator yourself.

Report: Mitsubishi to offer new Galant, Montero in US?

By Chris Paukert

Filed under:

We admit it – we’ve been skeptical about Mitsubishi’s fortunes here in the US for a long time now, and this month’s reveal of the 2014 Mirage subcompact at the New York Auto Show didn’t do much to quell our consternation. Yes, the Mirage should attract a certain portion of the buying population based on what will likely be the best fuel economy figures in its segment and a low price, but the profitability of basic small cars is limited even under the best of circumstances. Mitsubishi is clearly going to need something meatier in its portfolio if it wants to get back on track financially.

Help appears to be on the way. According to The Detroit Free Press, Masatoshi Hasegawa, the company’s executive vice president here in North America, has confirmed that at least two more models are destined for the company’s US dealerships, and it looks like they’re going to be entries into higher-volume, higher-margin segments. Hasegawa pledges that the company will overhaul its lineup over the next two to three years, and one of them will be a successor to the often-ignored Galant, a midsize sedan we last saw for the 2012 model year.

And what of the other model? Apparently it will be an unnamed “bigger brother” for the new 2014 Outlander, an acknowledgment that suggests Mitsubishi is considering bringing its Montero/Pajero SUV back to the States. Earlier this month, we heard a report that a next-generation model for the venerable off-roader remains a few years out, but it’s possible Mitsubishi might import the current aging model before the new one is produced. A big shift is said to be in the works for the fifth-generation model, with a massive weight loss and possible plug-in hybrid variant tipped as top goals for the program.

Spy Shots: BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe caught again

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the upcoming BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe out testing, but we’re sort of inclined to ask “Why?” yet again. After all, the 4 Series is what the new 3 Series-based coupes and convertibles will be called, so the idea of another four-door version just sort of seems redundant. In other words, just how different will a 4 Series Gran Coupe be from a 3 Series sedan, aside from perhaps a more rakish roofline or a four-passenger seating configuration? Probably not much, but BMW clearly thinks it can use the additional bodystyle to rake in some extra profits.

Anyway, back to these spy shots. No more of the 4GC’s skin has been revealed since the last time we saw it, but we fully expect it to share a lot of its design DNA with the 3 Series sedan, not to mention the attractive 4 Series coupe concept that bowed at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

Powertrain options should carry over direct from the 3 Series line, so we expect to see 428i and 435i models on hand, packing turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, respectively. We’re sure that BMW‘s xDrive all-wheel drive will be available, and who knows, we could even get a 428d version with the new 2.0-liter turbodiesel four that debuted in the 328d at the New York Auto Show last week, or even an M4 variant.

The 4 Series coupe is expected to launch later this year, so expect to see the 4CG shortly thereafter.

Report: UAW membership up for third straight year

By Zach Bowman

UAW President Bob King

Filed under:

The Detroit News reports that the United Auto Workers union has seen membership increase for the third straight year. The organization is now 382,513 members strong, which marks a jump of about 1,800 over 2011. That doesn’t include workers who are represented but don’t have a contract with the union.

UAW membership continues on a steady path of recovery, even in the face of concerted attacks on workers and collective bargaining,” UAW President Bob King said in a statement.

Even so, the union continues to struggle in its effort to garner the support of workers at manufacturing facilities owned by foreign automakers. The Detroit News reports UAW members were handing out leaflets at the New York Auto Show criticizing Nissan for not allowing the union access to plant workers in Mississippi, and we witnessed the exact same tactic ourselves at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year. King has said that if workers at those facilities aren’t unionized, suppliers and new autoworkers won’t see their wages increase.

Meanwhile, the UAW said it spent around $9.1 million on “political activities and lobbying” in 2012, up from $300,000 in 2011. The jump was thanks largely to the fact that 2012 was a presidential election year.
