Nissan Crafts Another Special GT-R—This One’s Purple

By Jeff Jablansky

2014 Nissan GT-R Special Edition

There are three main reasons that automakers craft special editions: to celebrate a new launch, to boost a model’s flagging sales, or to garner some PR for an older vehicle. We’ll let you figure out which of these apply to the five-year-old Nissan GT-R, 624 of which have been sold this year. A limited-production version of the Nissan supercar was already announced for 2014—that’d be the Track Edition—but now buyers will have the option of a second such model, in the form of the factory-customized (and imaginatively named) 2014 Nissan GT-R Special Edition.

If there can be an elegant purple paint, this GT-R wears it. The color is called Midnight Opal, and it straddles the line between deep blue and eggplant. Nissan claims that the hand-applied finish changes color based on light and angle, but in a totally classy way. The SE is one step up from the base GT-R Premium, and is kitted out with specially finished Rays wheels and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler similar to the one fitted to Track and Black Edition GT-Rs. Owners can flash a serial-numbered gold plaque as a certificate of authenticity at track days. (Or at their climate-controlled, carefully dusted private collections. Either way.)

No changes are made to the GT-R’s formidable 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6, which has received constant tweaking since launch and now makes 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft. (The original 2009 model made do with 480 hp and 340 lb-ft.) Unlike the GT-R Track, which sacrificed its second row on the altar of weight saving, the SE keeps the vestigial rear seats; in any event, both special models are equally well-suited to accommodating four real people.

The SE adds $6000 to the GT-R’s bottom line, coming in at $106,590. Put another way, the cost increase roughly equals one soon-to-be-launched Datsun Go. Just 100 Special Editions will be assembled for worldwide consumption, and half of them will come here. So if you want your Godzilla to be purple, we suggest you get to steppin’ to your local dealer.

Nissan Confirms GT-R NISMO Being Developed, Will Arrive Next Year

By John Lamm

The Nissan GT-R has been on a constant upswing in terms of power and performance—as illustrated by this nifty chart—and that was long before Nissan unveiled the Track Edition at the Chicago auto show in February. It seems rather fitting, then, that Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn would declare, “It would be unthinkable for us to develop a range of NISMO road cars without including the GT-R.” Who are we to argue with Carlos Ghosn? What followed was a confirmation from Nissan that the GT-R would, in fact, get the NISMO treatment.

The CEO was talking at the opening of NISMO’s new headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, and revealed that a NISMO-tuned Godzilla already is under development and will come to market next year. Nissan’s performance arm has a near-decade-long history of tuning production models of Nissan’s Z models and introduced the Juke NISMO alongside the latest and greatest 370Z NISMO as well as the GT-R Track Edition in Chicago.

By Darryl

At the start of the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan drops a few new performance enhancements to the 2014 370Z, 2013 Juke and 2014 GT-R. The 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo will receive some tweaks featuring a sportier look outside, interior accents including an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and carrying over the 3.7-liter 350-horsepower V6 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission w/ the synchronized rev-match downshifting system.

The new 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo joins the 2014 370Z Nismo to get the special NISMO treatment. The Juke Nismo gets over 100 separate performance, exterior and interior modifications. Among these enhancements, the new Juke Nismo gets NISMO-tuned suspension, steering and transmission mapping. Probably the best aspect of the Nismo-Tuned Juke, is that it gets increased power from its 1.6-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine making 197 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, compared to the stock 188 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission or CVT unit will be available as well as an all-wheel drive system.

Saving the best for last, as expected because Godzilla never stands still, the new 2014 Nissan GT-R gets an added “Track Edition” option available to the lineup. The Track Edition GT-R will feature the same 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque twin-turbocharged V6 engine and lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission. With the Track Edition, the GT-R loses its rear seats to save weight, more aggressive sports seats up front, integrated carbon fiber front splitter with special brake cooling ducts and a re-tuned suspension with special Bilstein DampTronic shocks ideal for track use.

Chicago: 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition loses rear seats, gains performance

By Zach Bowman

2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition - front three-quarter view in the desert

Filed under:

Nissan is adding yet another tier to the GT-R hierarchy for 2014 with the GT-R Track Edition. Debuting at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, the bruiser ditches its back seat in the quest for a lower curb weight, and a set of more seriously bolstered front buckets keep occupants planted once the going gets twisty. The Nürburgring-developed Track Edition offers an integrated carbon fiber front splitter with brake cooling ducts as well as an even harder-core suspension. Engineers swapped the stock bits for special Bilstein DampTronic shocks and paired them with more aggressive springs.

The engine still delivers 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque and still relies on the split-second quickness of the standard GT-R’s six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Expect to see just 150 examples of the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition land on American shores starting this May. In the interim, check out the full press release below for more information.
