Report: Subaru's first hybrid drawing close

By Jonathon Ramsey

In 2011 Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries confirmed that a hybrid Subaru would debut this year. Ever since, there’s been speculation about what kind of technology the gasoline-electric hybrid would use – Subaru’s own or some version of the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, which car would debut the new system – Forester, Legacy, or Outback – and whether it would come to America or be a Japan-only model.

A report in The Detroit Bureau says that whatever that first model is, it could be shown as soon as the New York Auto Show, and while the company feels it’s a must-have offering for the Japanese market it will also come to the US. It will have a Subaru-developed mild hybrid system that could have been previewed by the Hybrid Tourer concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, and is not expected to be able to drive on electric power alone. The Hybrid Tourer used a direct-injected, 2.0-liter boxer engine connected to a CVT and assisted by an electric motor rated at 13 horsepower. Subaru has yet to give anything away about the details of its hybrid plans, so we’ll look to New York for the long-awaited unveil.

The Continental: Corporate Collaborations, Designer Yachts, and the Best Off-Roader

By Jens Meiners

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Toyota and BMW collaboration

BMW and Toyota have announced the next steps in their cooperation: Following an exploratory phase, they have come to binding agreements to work on a fuel-cell system, high-energy lithium-air batteries, light-weight technology, and a mid-size sports car. The feasibility study on that sports car will be finished by the end of 2013, and it could lead to a common platform. The project is connected to the light-weight technology effort, which will contribute know-how to the sports car’s development, if it comes to fruition.

We already know about BMW’s contract to supply Toyota with 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engines. BMW can be congratulated on finding a partner that actually means business; previously announced contracts with Saab and Carbon Motors have led to nothing. Toyota is obviously as serious about becoming a maker of sporty cars as BMW is about becoming “green.” Toyota’s new strategy is a welcome change seeing as how memories of the Celica, MR2 and Supra have been buried under an onslaught of hybrids and J.D.Power–inspired family barges.

Nissan Juke NISMO

Meanwhile, Nissan is underscoring its sporty credentials with the launch of its NISMO sub-brand in Europe. The first two dedicated models will be the Juke NISMO and the 370Z NISMO. The Juke receives a body kit, red mirror caps, 225/45 rubber on 18-inch rims, and a mild power and torque boost that raise output from 188 horsepower to 197 and from 177 lb-ft of torque to 184. The cheerful car on steroids comes with either a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive, or a CVT automatic and all-wheel drive. Neither of these two combinations, I regret to say, is particularly pleasant. A more-powerful version with around 220 horsepower is in the works. No details on the 370Z Nismo are available yet.

Fiat and Mazda have finally signed the contract to produce an Alfa Romeo roadster at the Mazda plant in Hiroshima, Japan, beginning in 2015. The rear-wheel-drive two-seater will be a sister model to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and it will fill a gaping void in Alfa Romeo’s lineup. The brand last offered a Spider in 2010. The Alfa Romeo and Mazda versions will have unique engine portfolios, according to the companies’ joint statement.

Meanwhile, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne promises that the mid-engine Alfa Romeo 4C sports car will hit North American turf before the end of the year. I hear it will be an expensive car, rivaling the Porsche Cayman and Boxster, and that its styling language should not be seen as indicative of future Alfa Romeo models. The face of the 4C, like those of the MiTo and the Giulietta, is still inspired by the 8C Competizione. Other future Alfa Romeo models will be more angular and contemporary in style.

Opel Cascada convertible

Some German Cars

Opel has announced pricing for the Astra-based Cascada convertible, which begins at €21,802, before taxes, or $29,350 at current exchange rates. At this price, it comes with a 118-hp gasoline engine, fabric seats, and hubcaps. However, Opel is trying to position the droptop as an Audi A5 cabriolet and Mercedes-Benz E-class competitor, the latter of which costs twice as much as the Cascada. But the Cascada’s true competition is the Peugeot 308 CC, Renault Mégane coupe-cabriolet, and the slightly more compact Volkswagen Golf cabriolet. The Cascada is priced right and should do well in this less-expensive yet competitive field.

Volkswagen T3 kint sweater

Volkswagen shows that you don’t have to take your heritage all that seriously by displaying a T3—known in the U.S. as the Vanagon—fully clad in knitware. A couple of VW commercial vehicle employees spotted a classic bus thus treated while vacationing in Thailand and decided to replicate the application. It turns out that the employees’ female spouses were required to finish the ambitious project. About 2500 hours went into the 100-pound-plus knit sweater for the unique T3, which can be admired in the Volkswagen Museum until the end of March.

The German magazine Auto Bild reports that Audi will launch a Q6 crossover, positioned just above the Q5. Following the recipe of the rakish BMW X6, it will be distinguished by a steeply raked windshield and a low, fastback roofline. The car will be built in Mexico, according to Auto Bild.

Outremer 5X catamaran

Former Renault chief designer Patrick Le Quément, one of my personal design heroes, not only is creating a new design school, but also works as a successful designer of upper-crust yachts. Two of his designs, the Outremer 5X catamaran (pictured above) and the trawler Garcia GT54, were just named European Boats of the Year at the Düsseldorf boat show. Congratulations!

Mercedes-Benz G550

Highway Tested: Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen

Have I ever mentioned I am in love with the Mercedes-Benz G-wagen? It has been a couple of years since I last drove a one, but I recently had the pleasure of spending a week in a G550. Since then, the G received an interior makeover for 2013, which works well. I was surprised at the standard, 5.5-liter V-8′s aggressive tuning and growl—this Benz sounds like an AMG, and it takes off with a vengeance. Although the cabin is lavishly equipped, the G-Wagen does not and cannot hide its roots as a military vehicle engineered in the 1970s.

But it is relatively quiet, comfortable, effortless, and fast. It is a miracle, considering what the original G-wagen handled like (it was bad), and Mercedes has not exactly invested vast funds into updating the vehicle. There are a bunch of dashboard components from the corporate parts bin, and the exterior trim is off-the-shelf fare. But all that is part of the G’s charm. I wonder if Land Rover could pull off a similar job with the Defender, instead of reinventing it at the risk of turning it into a Toyota-FJ-Cruiser-like caricature.

2014 Subaru Forester First Drive: 2.5i Manual and CVT, and 2.0XT Turbo

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Subaru Forester

The Forester could be credited as the original formulator of the car-based crossover SUV. This most recent iteration stands proud against its newly redesigned, sleek, and carlike competition—the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5—while looking neither particularly sleek nor carlike. But the evolutionary styling masks a comprehensive overhaul that includes a new turbo engine and fresh transmissions. We already drove Forester prototypes in Japan last year and furnished a detailed rundown of its myriad changes in size, styling, and packaging, but this is our first test of the production vehicle. Report: Nissan Juke to get higher-performance Nismo RC model

By Chris Paukert

2013 Nissan Juke Nismo - front three-quarter view

It’s hard to find more giggles for your crossover dollar than the Juke – regardless of how you feel about the way it looks, the singularly styled nichemobile from Nissan is very entertaining to drive. Yet we’ve always felt that the platform had more in it, and evidently its Japanese parent agrees, having recently bracketed the googly-eyed turbocharged CUV with a new Nismo model and the barking mad built-to-order Juke R. At present, neither the Juke Nismo or the GT-R-powered Juke R are sold in North America, but the former has already been confirmed for sale here.

Even when it does reach our shores, there will still be a heck of a lot of whitespace between the mild performance upgrades of the standard Nismo and the half-mill R model, and to hear the UK’s Car tell it, Nissan has plans to plug that gap, too. According to its report, the automaker will shortly offer a Juke Nismo RC that will have roughly 20 horsepower more than the basic Nismo (which itself has 197 hp, nine more than the base Juke). The RC will apparently feature a lower, stiffer suspension, upgraded brakes and a unique exhaust and intake for a snarlier soundtrack. Both front-and all-wheel drive models are planned, as are manual and CVT transmission choices.

No word yet on the RC‘s pricing or even North American availability, but the regular-strength Juke Nismo is expected to arrive shortly, and Nissan is also said to have big plans for its performance nameplate, so we wouldn’t rule it out.

Car has already gotten its mitts on a few early prototypes of the RC, and if you’re interested in hearing what they think, you can read more by checking out the link below.

2013 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Beauty Left Wide Small

‘GETTING CLOSER TO THE ULTIMATE’

In the hot very competitive mid-size sedan segment the Camry is still far and away the best seller.  With sales through October 2012, the Camry has sold 348,714 units.  Coming in second is the Honda Accord with 276,197 units sold and steadily rising to challenge the Accord is the Nissan Altima with 258,663 units sold.

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima should make more headway against the Accord with its sleek styling, excellent performance, comfort and innovative new technologies than both the Camry and Accord do not offer.  When it comes to innovations and advanced technology behind the ground-up, totally new 2013 Altima design, some things might be considered evolutionary.  Take the body, the optional engines, transmission, suspension, steering, seats, the instrument panel, the optional navigation system, music connection, armrest, windshield wipers, and tire pressure monitoring system.  The previous generation Altima had them.  This new generation does too.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Beauty Right LA Small

Not a big deal, until you take a closer look.  Call it evolution on the edge; or evolution to the extreme; or simply call it a design that is about to revolutionize what consumers think about Altima-and what a mid-size sedan can or should be.

2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Engine Small

It has a body that while clearly recognizable as an Altima, is lighter, more rigid and cuts a cleaner path through the wind, a 3.5 liter DOHC CVTC, all-aluminum V6 engine that now generates 270 hp at 6,000 rpm and 251 lb.ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm to quickly and securely move you into fast moving freeway traffic and to more easily and safely maneuver around slower city traffic.  The new standard 2.5 liter inline 4-cylinder engine is lighter, stronger, quicker and more fuel efficient than before.  My SL test Altima came with the 3.5 liter engine and I never wanted to more power on the road or Interstate.  The next-generation Xtronic CVT takes Nissan’s two decades of Continuously Variable Transmission leadership into a new dimension of smooth, quiet and fuel efficiency.  With the 3.5 liter V6 you can shift manually with the steering column mounted paddle shifters.  The new refined independent multi-link rear suspension geometry can be found on many premium European sports sedans.  A hybrid power steering system combines the feel of a traditional hydraulic box with the efficiency of modern electric control that is more responsive with the addition of a strut tower brace just behind the engine. The front bucket seats that their inspiration and design from outer space technology for superb comfort and support.  An intuitive 3D-effect information display is easier to watch for import information.  The armrest is more padded than before for extra-ordinary comfort during long drives.  The new windshield wiper design clears more area and with less streaking.  The tire pressure monitoring system tells you when you are at the prescribed psi in each tire when you need to add air.

When considering an Altima that is ‘new and improved’, you also need to consider the ‘new and never available before’.  For example, an advanced RearView Monitor camera that detects four views is utilized to bring Altima into premium sedan territory with available Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Moving Object Detection MOD.

Proving that premium doesn’t have to be pricey, the new Altima body takes a big step forward in creating a quiet, comfortable foundation for a new benchmark mid-size sedan.  Keeping the same basic dimensions as before, new attention to aerodynamic design helps give the totally restyled body a more premium look.  More importantly, the new body features a new front strut tower brace (as mentioned above) and additional rear structural support built into the rear parcel shelf-enhancing structural rigidity and lateral handling response.  At the same time, overall body weight has been reduced through utilizing aluminum hood and bumper reinforcements and expanded use of high-tensile steel.  In addition, more than half the steel in the body is high-strength.  Total vehicle weight has been reduced by around 80 pounds.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Beauty Rear Small

Since quiet feels quality, the transmission of noise into the cabin has also been reduced through the use of the more rigid body and by intercepting and isolating noise before it enters the passenger compartment with reduced wind noise designs for the sideview mirrors and A-pillar moldings, and improved engine, exhaust and HVAC mounts.  The idea is to first ‘seal’ the cabin, then absorb noise inside through a significant increase in noise absorption materials in the roof, instrument panel and floor mats.  This provides more of a sense of separation from the engine and creates better acoustics to enjoy conversation and the various audio sources and components.  The coefficient of drag has been reduced by 5% to 0.299 through smoothing airflow around the body, and adding six air deflectors and two large underbody panels.  With all of the windows closed the interior is as quiet as any luxury sedan that I have tested this year.

Targeting best-in-class fuel economy (at 38 mpg highway), Altima’s improved version of Nissan’s proven QR25 engine sheds approximately 11 lbs. while adding seven horsepower to 182 hp.  The design adds variable valve timing on both exhaust and intake camshafts, and the new intake system opens the valves at a higher rpm to help keep the torque curve flat.  Torque is rated at 180 lb.ft.  Other revisions include an aluminum exhaust manifold cover, a more efficient starter motor and thinner cylinder head walls.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Dashboard Small

As a world leader in continuously variable transmission technology, Nissan has produced globally more than nine million CVT-equipped vehicles in the last 20 years.  Always in the right gear, whether passing, merging or cornering, CVTs combine responsive acceleration, excellent fuel efficiency and about a third fewer moving parts than conventional automatic transmissions.  Finally CVTs feature less friction and less drivetrain shock to other parts.

A full 70% of the parts have been redesigned, which along with a downsized oil pump, lower oil level and low viscosity oil results in up to 40% reduction in internal friction than before.  The new CVT also features expanded gear ratio coverage with a lower 1st. gear and higher ratio overdrive.  New control logic and expanded gear ratio coverage help reduce noise and fuel consumption while improving drivability and responsiveness.  For example, during cruising the expanded ratio lowers engine rpm at highway speeds for a quieter ride and improved NVH versus an automatic.  When starting from a full stop the continuously varying ratio (compared to a step automatic) results in seamless acceleration.  When accelerating while passing, acceleration is smooth and confident-inspiring due to no stepped gear changes and minimized shift shock.

The new intelligent CVT logic also includes a Lift Foot Hold function that holds the gear ratio if the accelerator pedal is momentarily released and then reapplied, such as when merging into a fast moving freeway; and a Brake Downshift function that ‘downshifts’ the transmission when braking is applied before entering a corner, so re-acceleration is enhanced when exiting a corner because the CVT is already in a lower gear.  All V6 equipped Altima models (like the one I tested) utilize a chain driver (versus belt on 4-cylinder models), and standard paddle shifters that help mimic a step transmission (with seven simulated gear levels) when desired.  When using the paddle shifter I had a feel that I was at the wheel of a true sequential automatic.  The gear changes are very quick, either up or down, as it really gave me the feel of a true sports sedan with the great 270 hp V6 and saving me an estimated 10% improvement in fuel economy over last year’s model.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Front Seats Small

As part of the desire to make the 2013 Altima the segment leader in dynamic performance, a new multi-link rear suspension incorporating Active Understeer Control was developed.  The new design starts with a new structure with enhanced stiffness, helping enhance stability, tracking and response to steering inputs.  Refined toe angle control is achieved with the addition of new connect bushings, resulting in enhanced tire deformation compensation when cornering, and improved camber angle control under load helps tire contact with the road, also when cornering.  The suspension utilizes a new shock absorber design by ZR SACHS, which supplies many high-end European sports sedans.  The shocks use state-of-the-art valve technology to help control wheel hop and harshness, while also helping create a smooth flat ride.  The result is reduced transmission of vibrations to the cabin, along with enhanced body control and response.  The front suspension remains an independent front strut design and stabilizer bars are utilized front and rear.  The new Active Understeer Control system utilizes intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators to brake the inside front wheels during cornering (as required) to increase yaw-moment using the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)Traction Control system (TCS) as its base.  When you turn a front-wheel drive car in situations such as merging onto freeways from a cloverleaf, the tendency is for the car to understeer.  With Active Understeer Control, the Altima turns as you intend, making it easier to go in the intended direction-whether in dry, wet or snowy conditions.  Active Understeer Control is designed primarily for everyday operation rather than emergency evasive maneuvers.  The new suspension and technologies really gave me the feeling of a more neutral handling experience even though the Altima is front-wheel drive.  The response to my steering inputs was very precise, almost like I was driving a rear-wheel sports sedan.

Further adding to the excellent new dynamics when driving is the new Electronic Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering (EHPS) system which provides the best of two worlds-the natural smooth feel of a sophisticated hydraulic power steering system, while simultaneously improving fuel economy by using electric power (rather than drawing power from the engine).  The hydraulic assist allows a greater reduction ratio than with gears, while the small electric motor, which runs directly off the 12-volt power supply (no converter) does not need to be mounted directly on the steering rack since a large reduction ratio is obtained.  The result is smooth, confidence-inspiring steering at higher speeds and easy assist when parking.  The new technology gave me quick and smooth responses to my inputs (also thanks to the strut tower brace), the feel for the road was great and the on-center feel is excellent.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Beauty Side Small

Quickly and safely slowing the new Altima down from speed are excellent power-assisted steel disc brakes.  Up front are 11.7 in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and 11.5 in. solid discs in the rear clamped with single-piston calipers.  Braking power is increased with BA and control is enhanced when braking on wet slick pavement with standard ABS and EBD.  The brakes felt very linear and strong when braking from highway speeds.

The all-new 2013 Altima SL 3.5 liter rides on large 18X7.5 in. alloy wheels wrapped with Dunlop 235/45R18 in. Sport 7,000 high-performance low profile tires for great ride at any speed.

While the new Altima likes to keep its wheels and tires firmly planted on the road, the standard front bucket seats have a less-Earthly design.  In the desire to help reduce the fatigue experienced during long commutes or extended road trips, Nissan turned to seating and posture research from NASA.  According to NASA, the least fatiguing seats are those that come closest to a ‘neutral posture’-a relaxed position that the human body takes in a weightless environment.  Utilizing a new articulated seat shape with continuous support from the pelvis to the chest and distribution of localized deformation characteristics, the ‘zero-gravity’ Altima seats help reduce muscular and spinal loads, and improve blood flow-thereby helping reduce fatigue over long periods behind the wheel.  Seat surface perforations provide increased ventilation, breathability and comfort.  Heated front seats come standard on the SL.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima SL 35 Cluster Small

With so many external distractions in everyday driving, you don’t need more inside the vehicle.  Altima’s new Advanced Drive-Assist Display (ADAD) puts the key information right in front of you in an intuitive 3D-effect and tilt display that is designed to improve cognition-and help reduce the time your eyes are away from the road.  Located between the tachometer and speedometer, the ADAD’s 4.0 in. color display is closer and easier to read than traditional center-stack information monitors.  The system is customizable and adjustable using the steering wheel controls, so you can view information including: audio system display, instant mpg, trip computer, tire pressure monitoring system with individual tire pressure readouts and turn-by-turn navigation (if equipped) with the ability to match on-screen vehicle image with the actual color.  ADAD also communicates input from the available suite of Safety Shield Technology features-Blind Sport Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection.

NissanConnectSM is designed to be as easy to use as a bank ATM and there is no monthly charge or fees.  Among its many features, it integrates Pandora, Bluetooth, USB connection for iPod interface and other compatible devices and SiriusXM satellite radio.  Pandora offers more than 350 genres of music and comedy.  The hands-free text messaging assistant allows you to manage incoming text messages via voice control.  You are alerted to an incoming text on the Advanced Driver-Assist Display and, after initiating the system, you can hear the text read out loud and respond via voice recognition, or via the steering wheel switches using pre-set answers like ‘driving, can’t text’, ‘on my way’, ‘running late’, ‘okay’, or a custom message.  The system can be turned off if desired.  The NissanConnectSM with navigation system also integrates with the ADAD and includes an easy-to-use with its 7 in. touch screen, 3D-effect map views, voice recognition, destination search via Google POI.  It also offers the ability to send Google directions to the navi system straight from a smartphone.  Other navigation system features include speed limit display, eco driving maps, curve warning and split-screen display-along with global radio capability.  The navigation system is available for about $590.00.  The idea with NissanConnectSM and NissanConnectSM with navigation is not to have the greatest number of total functions, but to prioritize and provide the most natural and comfortable interface with the key customer desired one.  The results are fewer touches, fewer screens and higher user satisfaction.  Unfortunately, my test SL model didn’t have this system so I can’t really speak about how much I enjoyed the different aspects.

When it comes to the new 2013 Altima, revolution also lives in the details.  The interior’s premium look and feel comes from a combination of fresh design and quality appointments.  The piano black interior trim is highlighted with faux wood, silver color accents and chrome rings.  The leather-wrapped/tilt/telescoping steering wheel has a grippy, sporty tactile feel that is a pleasure to hold in your hands, matching that of the short shifter lever.  The bright white illumination is unified between the various displays and rally-type speedometer/tachometer.  The door trim has a feel of soft grain on the door grips.  Even the center armrest receives ‘class-above’ levels of padding for added comfort.  Optional HID enhanced auto headlights feature an improved two-stage automatic-on function.  In lower light situations during the day, the headlights illuminate but the gauges remain in daylight mode.  In late evening/night conditions, the headlights illuminate and the gauges revert to nighttime lighting.  The headlights will also automatically turn on at the direction of the windshield wipers-after four passes-since many states now require the headlights to be illuminated in rainy conditions.  Also offered is a Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire pressure display and Easy Fill Tire Alert function.  When filling the tires wit air, the hazard lamps flash to let you know the system is working.  When the correct pressure is reached, a beep of the horn provides notification.

All New 2013 Nissan Altima 35 Back Seats Small

The all-new exterior styling of the Altima also sets up apart from the competition.

The sleek, sexy styling features a new more rakish grille with chrome surround and a lower air-intake to further direct cooling air into the engine.  The ‘cat’s-eye’ headlamp clusters are very angular and house the HID headlights.  Down below on the bumper are foglamps and new turn-signal lamps.  The new aluminum hood gets the wave treatment found on the luxury Infiniti models.  From the side you’ll notice a steeply raked windshield A-pillars, flat roof tampering down to the short trunk.  The greenhouse is surrounded by a thick chrome strip with chrome door handles adding elegance to the look.  The new aero-styled power remote/heated/manual folding sideview mirrors cut down on wind noise.  Down below are deep side extensions lowering the center of gravity and adding a more aggressive stance.  The front and rear fenders are flared to further add to the new, more aggressive stance.  Out the rear are wraparound LED tail lights, a thick chrome strip between the lamp clusters and dual, 3 in. polished stainless steel exhaust finishers.  This new look is very unique and very impressive.

Standard features not mentioned above in the SL trim level include 8-way powered driver’s-side bucket seat, leather seats, premium interior trim, cruise control, 9-speaker premium Bose audio system with subwoofers, dual-zone climate control with in-cabin filtration, rear air vents, center console with dual cupholders/deep storage bin and open storage bin in front, storage pockets in each door, Nissan Intelligent Key with remote start, push button start/stop, power windows with front express up/down, power door locks, moonroof, map pockets behind the front seatbacks, remote trunk release, remote fuel filler door release, dual sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, grab handles above each door, variable speed wipers/washers, auto dimming rearview mirror, 2-12-volt power plugs, thick cut-pile carpeting, 60/40 split rear bench and a pull-down rear center armrest with dual cupholders.

Standard safety features include driver/front passenger side-impact/front impact/side curtain airbags, LATCH system for child seats, three-point seatbelts for all five seating positions including front pretensioners/load limiters, vehicle immobilizer system, alarm, front/rear crumple zones and steel beams in each door.

In the very competitive mid-size sedan segment of the marketplace, the all-new 2013 Nissan Altima should hold its own and probably increase its market share against the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.  It is definitely worth a test drive!

Lotus pondering 'fake shifting' for Evora 414E plug-in hybrid

By Danny King

Lotus Evora 414E - front three-quarter view

Some would say Lotus has some credibility among the green-car set since it supplied the body for the Tesla Roadster and has always been obsessed with extracting maximum performance from light weight. Now, our friends at Green Car Reports are suggesting that the UK boutique sportscar operation could lose that reputation by simulating the acceleration of a conventional geared transmission for its Evora 414E extended-range plug-in.

According to GCR, Lotus may design the car to temporarily cut power under acceleration to simulate the shifting process so that drivers can make-believe they’re driving a car with a conventional gear-based transmission. Citing what it calls “a person close to Lotus Engineering,” the report suggests Lotus may also drop in some commensurate sound effects.

As fans of the “seamless” acceleration delivered by an electric, transmission-less motor, Green Car Reports deems such efforts “idiotic,” but we are reminded of a similar technology’s popularity amongst continuously variable transmissions – artificial gear change points for paddle shifters and manual gates on gearlevers on CVT-equipped models like the Mitsubishi Lancer. The false cogswaps don’t really improve acceleration – in fact, they can harm it – but the shifting sensation apparently makes some drivers feel more comfortable.

Lotus first showed off a prototype of its Evora EREV at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show and last summer revealed some if its specifications, including the delivery of 738 pound-feet of torque and a tidy 0-60 time of just four seconds.

Subaru Prices 2014 Forester From $22,820; Turbo Starts at $28,820

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT

Subaru has announced pricing for its redesigned 2014 Forester crossover, and overall the cost of entry for one of the brand’s best-selling models has stayed largely the same. The base 2014 Forester 2.5i starts at $22,820 with a six-speed manual transmission—that’s just $730 more than the 2013 model; a continuously variable automatic transmission is available for an additional $1000.

For 2014 the Forester carries over its base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for 2.5i models, but the hotter XT models’ optional turbocharged 2.5-liter four is replaced by a new force-fed version of the 2.0-liter four found under the hood of the BRZ sports car. (We’ve already driven both Forester models in prototype form.) The crossover’s body is slightly larger than before and gets evolutionary styling updates, including a more steeply raked windshield and a somewhat-blockier appearance.  Continue reading Subaru Prices 2014 Forester From $22,820; Turbo Starts at $28,820

Subaru has officially announced that its all-new 2014 Forester will carry a base MSRP of $21,995 when it hits dealerships early this year, (*not including $895 in destination fees). This represents an increase of $700 over the outgoing 2013 model.

That new price will net buyers the base 2.5i model equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Subaru will also sell the 2.5i engine in Premium, Limited and Touring trims, though the automaker has not released specific price points for those models. These models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Subaru says that with its standard all-wheel drive, the Forester 2.5i will be good for fuel economy numbers of 24/32 miles per gallon (city/highway) when equipped with the company’s continuously variable transmission. Manual models see those numbers drop to 22/29 mpg.

The more powerful Forester 2.0XT will only be offered in Premium and Touring trims, starting at $27,995 (not including destination). These models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four, sending 250 hp and 258 lb-ft to all four wheels. Fuel economy doesn’t suffer terribly with this more powerful engine, as only the CVT is offered. Subaru quotes figures of 23/28 mpg here.

Upmarket Forester models are available with the company’s new Eyesight driver assistance system and Starlink infotainment technology. Other new features available for the 2014 Forester include Hill Descent Control on CVT-equipped models, a rearview camera, power liftgate, navigation with smartphone integration and a 440-watt Harmon/Kardon premium audio system.

Scroll down for the official details in Subaru’s press blast.

2014 Jeep Patriot Video Preview

It may look the same, but for 2014 Jeep has refreshed the Patriot where it counts by ditching the CVT and giving it more miles per gallon. That’s right, the CVT transmission in the Jeep Patriot has been replaced with a six-speed automatic across the board. Both the 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinders now feature this new transmission, and with…

Detroit: 2014 Jeep Compass/Patriot sing their swan songs with a six-speed automatic

2014 Jeep Compass

Unless the governor, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, gives them a reprieve, the 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot are expected to meet their makers sometime next year. Should they perish, it’s a shame that it would happen just as they’ve shed the continuously variable transmission that was their major bugbear, and just as the Compass has gotten its best looks yet.

Both will roll with a proper six-speed automatic transmission, courtesy of PowerTech. Noise-resistant gears and tuning by Chrysler boffins should alleviate the unappealing sounds that were given off by the older CVT. Unless, that is, you choose to have either model equipped with Freedom Drive II; the serious off-road package, available on both baby Jeeps, will still come with the CVT. The base transmission on the entry-level Sport trim remains the five-speed manual.

Otherwise, it’s minor changes for the Compass, set off by the new 18-inch wheel option, trim pieces around the car and a back-up camera. The Patriot gets seat-mounted airbags, but is carryover otherwise. With their expected demises perhaps a year away, not much has changed otherwise. Engine choices comprise the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque or the 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft.

Admire them in the high-res galleries before they disappear – whenever that is – and read all about them in the press release below.

Detroit: Nissan Resonance Concept gives glimpse of next Murano

By Zach Bowman

The Nissan Resonance Concept has bowed at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, giving the world a glimpse at the company’s future design direction for crossovers. Specifically, the concept heralds what the next-generation Murano may look like once it touches down. Nissan has already confirmed the successor to the big crossover’s throne will be produced in Mississippi for the first time. With a “floating” roof and dynamic head lamp arrays, the Resonance boasts a far more athletic appearance than the snub-nosed current generation. Inside, designers worked up a cockpit aimed at conveying what “the future of first-class space travel might be.”

Nissan isn’t saying what the upcoming Murano will have under the hood, but the Resonance boasts an all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain with a small-displacement internal combustion engine and an electric motor. A lithium-ion battery delivers power while a CVT takes care of putting power to the wheels. Take a look at the full press release below for more information.

2013 Honda Accord Sport Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

‘A SPORTING GOOD IDEA’

The all-new, ninth-generation, 2013 Honda Accord is a vast improvement over the last generation model.  The new Sport trim package placed just above the price for the base LX trim saves you money but gives you in return a very good performance version of the Accord.  No matter which model you choose, each is more sophisticated, higher-performing, and with a longer list of standard equipment.  The new Sport model comes with a new 189 hp 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine, a new CVT transmission with seven gear ratios and paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with cruise control, audio control and Bluetooth buttons, a body color decklid spoiler, dual exhaust with chrome finishers, foglamps, and a 10-way powered driver’s seat with power lumbar control.  Filling the fenders are custom 18X8 in. machined aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with 235/45R18 in. performance tires for excellent grip and a smooth, quiet ride.

The new Accord is shorter, lower and wider than before which gives it a lower co-efficient of drag while improving its handling capabilities.  Even though it is slightly small in length, 189.2 in. versus last year’s 191 in., rear legroom and trunk room has improved.

The newly styled Sport model that I tested features more chrome and cut angles beginning with the front end showing a more angular grille with chrome around its side, bottom and inside horizontal slats.  Just below is another air-intake with a chrome strip at the bottom, and at each side are new foglamps.  The ‘cat’s-eye’ headlamps are slimmer but put out more light with standard projector beam lights or optional HID lights.  The silhouette shows the steeply raked windshield A-pillars, aero-dynamic designed side mirrors, flared fenders, a full-perimeter chrome strip around the greenhouse, deep side extensions, and pull out chrome door handles.  A nicely scallop at each door rises slightly giving it a look of motion when parked.  The tapered roof ends with a spoiler mounted onto the back of the trunk lid to enhance rear downforce.  Moving over to the rear are big, wraparound taillight/brake/backup lamp clusters tied together with a wide chrome strip.  A bold bumper with a chrome bar just above an air-diffuser underneath better manage airflow.  Under the bumper at each side are large, chrome exhaust finishers.  The new look is sleek, lower and aggressive, yet more luxurious than before.

Under the hood of the Accord Sport is a new 2.4 liter 4-cylinder aluminum alloy DOHC, i-VTEC engine with direct injection.  Because of the high-flow dual exhaust system this engine pumps out 189 hp at 6,400 rpm and 182 lb.ft. of torque at 3,900 rpm compared to the standard 2.4 liter’s 185 hp and 181 lb.ft. of torque with the single exhaust.  An ECO Assist button on the left side of the dashboard decreases rpm when lightly pushing on the throttle to increase mpg.

The Accord Sport’s new engine can be mated to either a smooth shifting six-speed manual or a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).  With a wider ratio range than the 5-speed automatic that it replaces and combined with greater efficiency and less weight, the new CVT is a major contributor to the Accord’s improved fuel efficiency of 21 mpg/city and 34 mpg/highway.  I tested the new CVT with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and it was great fun changing gears when I wanted to hold to redline or downshift going into corners.  I saw 1-7 gears on the center readout plus the system wouldn’t let me advance the gears until I reached a certain speed, just like a real sequential shifting automatic.  Upshifting and downshifting was instant, great fun and sporty driving.

Most of the fun when behind the wheel is telegraphed through the new, more rigid fully independent suspension and the many electronic advancements that make the all-new Accord the most fun-to-drive and capable than ever.   The all-new chassis features a MacPherson strut setup that replaces the older, heavier double-wishbone setup.  The front includes a new steel and aluminum subframe that reduces noise, vibration and harshness, gas-charged shocks and a 17mm stabilizer bar.  The rear multi-link setup features new compliance bushings, coil springs, gas-charged shocks and a 14mm stabilizer bar.  Giving the front end more rigidity for enhanced response to your inputs is a strut tower brace.  The new electric power steering system uses an electric motor to assist to the rack & pinion steering thus reducing steering effort at slow speeds, improving precision, feel for the road and less power consumption.

When you put the gear selector in S (Sport) the engine mapping is quickened, the suspension tightens and the power steering is even more responsive giving a feeling and precision of driving a higher-priced, high-performance sport sedan.  When entering a highway on a cloverleaf I had the speedometer at 60 mph with no understeer or oversteer, partly thanks to the electronic vehicle assist and traction control that kept the wheels firmly planted as I sped around the circle.  Giving the new Accord a quieter ride than ever are standard Active Noise Control and Active Sound Control that counteract engine noise helping to create a more linear and sophisticated high-rpm engine note.

Slowing the new Accord Sport down from speed are larger, power-assisted, four-wheel steel disc brakes.  Up front are 11.4 in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and 11.1 in. solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers in the rear.  Braking control is enhanced with standard ABS, EBD and BA.

The interior of the Accord Sport is all new with more comfortable front bucket seats, new more simple instrumentation, brushed aluminum trimmed, dual tiered center stack with separate audio and climate controls sections, a center console with dual cupholders, storage bin up front and a deep and wide storage box under the padded armrest.  The leather-wrapped stick shifter is found on-line with P through S surrounded by a  chrome bezel.  All of the controls are within easy rear to use.  Although the car’s length as decreased over 3 in. and the wheelbase is almost an inch shorter, key interior dimensions have grown.  While the Accord’s sleeker shape decreases already plentiful headroom slightly, rear legroom increases over an inch, bot front and rear shoulder room increase, and trunk space is up over a cubic foot.  The larger volume trunk now features a flatter floor and more space for greater utility.  The interior shows Accord’s advancement with higher grades of soft-to-the-touch materials and greater craftsmanship.  The Sport features black plastic with a dot pattern on the dashboard, center console and door trim.

A bright, full-color 8 in. ‘intelligent’ Multi-Information Display (i-MID) serves as the control center for the Accord’s many electronic functions.  The i-MID screen displays the image from the new standard backup camera, fuel economy information, audio functions, and an available LaneWatch feature, which can help you on busy multi-lane roads by displaying a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway of the vehicle.  A new audio with touchscreen system is standard and features a Pandora internet radio interface, and a convenient SMS text messaging function that can read incoming texts aloud and allow you to respond with factory preset text message.  A Bluetooth HandsFreeLink phone interface adds intuitive hands-free calling convenience.  Honda satellite-linked navigation system with voice recognition and FM Traffic is optional.  The all-new Accord is the first Honda product to offer available HondaLink technology, which works with the owner’s compatible smartphone to connect the Accord with music and other media sources, internet apps, roadside assistance and more to help improve the driving experience.  Aha by Harman is the first HondaLink internet app resource and future apps will expand HondaLink functionality substantially.

Standard equipment inside my Accord Sport not mentioned above included AM-FM-CD/MP3 audio system with four speakers, USB audio interface, MP3 auxiliary input jack, dual-zone climate control with air filtration system, power windows/door locks with driver-side express up/down, illuminated dual vanity mirrors, dual map lights, map pockets behind the front seatbacks, sunglass holder, cruise control, variable-speed wipers/washers, remote fuel filler door/trunk release, cargo area light, lockable glove box, exterior temperature gauge, thick cut-pile carpeting, floor maps front/rear, maintenance minder system, grab handles above each door, 60/40 split folding rear seat, and a pull-down rear armrest with dual cupholders.

Standard safety features include driver/front passenger dual stage airbags, driver/front passenger side airbags, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, ACE body structure, tire pressure monitoring system, side impact door beams, 3-point safety belts for five with front pretensioners/load limiters, daytime running lamps and the LATCH system for child seats.

The all-new 2013 Honda Accord is a vast improvement over the last generation model with sleeker and more aerodynamic styling, more fuel efficient powertrains, a more refined and dynamic suspension system, a more spacious, refined, and comfortable interior with the latest in infotainment and safety systems.  The new Sport model that I tested gave me even greater pleasure and fun driving it around town and on the highways.  The price is surprisingly affordable at just $23,390.00 for this great looking and great performing new Accord Sport sedan.

Official: 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot get available PowerTech six-speed auto, modest changes

By Jonathon Ramsey

2014 Jeep Compass - front three-quarter view, black

2014 Jeep Patriot - front three-quarter view, redThe 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot are here, and as expected, the big news is the availability of a six-speed automatic transmission on certain models. The transmission, sourced from PowerTech (a subsidiary of Hyundai) will attempt to address the noise, vibration and harshness issues suffered by older CVT-equipped models by using noise-resistant gears. It has a long sixth gear to improve fuel economy, but Jeep hasn’t revealed the mileage numbers for the auto-equipped models yet.

The new automatic will be available as an option on the Sport trim of both spec, and as standard on Latitude and Limited models. It can be had in front-wheel-drive versions or those equipped with the optional Freedom Drive I. It can’t be specified with the Freedom Drive II, however, the full-time four-wheel-drive package with a low-range gear sticks with the unloved CVT2L Continuously Variable Transmission.

With their expected demises perhaps a year away, not much has changed otherwise. Engines are either the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque or the 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft, and the five-speed manual transaxle is still in the mix.

The Compass gets a catalog’s worth of shiny trim pieces to mark its last year, including plated upper grille trim with a “mold-in-color Billet Silver grille texture,” new headlight, fog light and taillight inner bezel treatments for the various trims, painted mirror caps, optional new 18-inch wheels for the Limited and an available backup camera. Inside are new trim options on the Latitude like a sport mesh and vinyl seat, and on the Limited, trims like Saddle Brown perforated leather seating. The Patriot gets no changes other than the addition of front seat-mounted airbags.

The price of the Patriot hasn’t changed, sticking with an MSRP of $15,995 (plus $995 destination). The press release below doesn’t mention the price of the Compass, so don’t be shocked if it gets goosed a bit from the $19,495 MSRP of the 2013 model.

Stay tuned for live shots from the floor of the Detroit Auto Show later today. The two updated baby Jeeps will be in showrooms the second quarter of this year, and there’s plenty of reading to be done in the official announcement below.

2014 Jeep Compass, 2014 Jeep Patriot Shed CVT, Add Refinements

In the 2014 Jeep Compass and 2014 Jeep Patriot, the CVT is history. And because of that, we think both of these models are worth giving a second look if you’ve previously taken note of their rugged good looks and city-sized compact-car sensibilities. This bears some explanation. The Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot don’t look much alike…

Quick Spin: 2013 Subaru Outback Limited

By Dan Roth

Subaru has given the 2013 Outback a host of detail changes and updates, though you’d hardly know from looking at it. The mild exterior changes mostly go unnoticed, and if you’re comparing on a numbers basis, the new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is bang-on what the old engine would do. The biggest news is EyeSight, Subaru’s new stereo camera-based system that drives lane-departure warning, active cruise control, automatic emergency braking and forward collision alert functions.

The 2013 Outback spent some time in my driveway, and as far as jacked-up wagons with off-road cladding go, this is one of the most affordable of the lot. That doesn’t mean it’s cheap; the Outback I tried was a Limited model with moonroof, navigation, EyeSight, leather and CVT added on. That takes the Outback from its roughly $25,000 starting point and adds nearly $10,000, landing solidly in the mid-$30,000 range. Still, against its most natural competitors like the Volvo XC70 and Audi A6 Avant, the Outback is a better value.

DRIVING NOTES

  • The new 2.5-liter four-cylinder is surprisingly happy in this big wagon. It never felt underpowered, though it also never felt abundantly strong. Adequate.
  • Even more shocking, the CVT and four-cylinder combo proved smooth and refined most of the time. Hard acceleration, like merging on the highway, was really the only time the slippy-revvy characteristic of the CVT appeared. Most of the time it was as unobtrusive as the smoothest automatic transmission.
  • This is a very nice car in Limited trim, and the interior materials are better than I remember them being in the last Outback I sampled. The leather seats are very comfortable for long hauls, the interior is acceptably quiet, and the car is a perfect match for climates that see lots of inclement weather. Driving through rain and snow quickly points out what the buzz is all about with these cars. The Outback is comfy and confident in the slop.
  • When it’s dry, you pay a price for the increased ride height and chunky tires. Still, sporty handling is not this car’s forte unless you’re competing in winter rallies.
  • The navigation system is fiddly to use, the screen is now on the small side compared to the competition and it generally just isn’t that good. It took a lot more active babysitting of the nav to get it to display useful information and get me to a destination when a clogged highway changed my route. The key to a successful arrival turned out to be 70-percent my own wits and 30-percent the navigation system’s capabilities.
  • The EyeSight system is mostly annoying. It’s really sensitive and alerts at the slightest provocation. The first thing I did every time I got into the Outback was hold down the two overhead buttons to shut the EyeSight system up.
  • The fuel economy I saw was better than you’ll get out of a CUV or SUV with comparable space, though given the ride height and size, the Outback is practically a crossover anyway, so the solid mid-to-high 20s I was able to squeeze from each gallon of fuel are mostly due to having a small engine and a transmission programmed to reach for the sky as fast as possible.

2013 Lexus ES300h Hybrid Review & Test Drive

By Malcolm Hogan

The business of combining luxury, exceptional fuel economy numbers and suitable performance in a functional hybrid package is no easy feat. Lexus, however, has formulated the perfect balance of what a luxury hybrid should offer for the consumer in the all-new 2013 Lexus ES300h Hybrid.

The relentless pursuit of perfection has paid off well when it comes to offering a hybrid that meshes so well into the mainstream mid-sized luxury sedan market with the new 2013 Lexus ES300h. All-new for the 2013 model year, the Lexus ES receives the newfound trademark design language with the spindle Lexus grill up front. The new hybrid ES, dubbed the ES300h, is put in the mix of the V6-powered ES350 (268 horsepower – 21 mpg city 31 mpg highway) to offer uncompromised fuel efficiency without sacrificing the relaxed but pristine driving dynamics of its more powerful sibling.

The all-new 2013 Lexus ES gets a new design carrying the new signature spindle grill found throughout the new line of Lexus vehicles. The larger dimensions of the new ES open it up to receive larger seating areas and more of a broader demeanor visually on the road. The only thing signifying the new ES300h as a hybrid apart from the ES350 is its rear passenger door ‘Hybrid’ badges, the ES300h emblem on the trunk lid, and the blue-accented Lexus emblems on the front and rear.

The new 2013 Lexus ES300h is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and electric motor, which together produce 200 horsepower. Power is fed through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels. The new Lexus ES300h is able to make a dash from 0-60 mph in 8.1 seconds (about 1 second slower than ES350), which is pretty decent for a hybrid vehicle but slightly underwhelming for a midsized luxury sedan. However, the Lexus ES300h is far from a push-over when power is demanded, even when in Eco mode.

Lexus carries over their drive select mode dial into the 2013 ES300h with Eco, Normal, and Sport modes. Interestingly enough, the Eco mode can be a desirable setting as it does not limit throttle response to the level of the vehicle falling flat at mid-range gas pedal positions. Eco mode does an excellent job to automatically sort out driving conditions to optimize fuel economy without sapping too much response and feedback from the driver. Sport mode, also utilizing the traditional hybrid features such as regenerative braking and auto start/stop, spices things up a bit by adding weight to the steering wheel, advancing the throttle response, and by default, illuminating the gauge cluster with a red accent while activating an rpm tachometer in place of the Eco metering. The Sport mode can be customized in a menu set to display the Eco meter and turn off the red colored cluster illumination.

Transitions between the engine and electric motor are virtually seamless and barely noticeable. Everything about the hybrid powertrain is smooth and well-adapted to mostly any driving style. At idle, the Lexus ES300h is nearly silent even when the 4-cylinder engine is still running. The faint hum of the electric motor, mostly noticeable during deceleration, is one of the very few audible giveaways of the ES300h being a hybrid.

In the traditional sense of Toyota and Lexus hybrids, the all-new ES300h utilizes advanced control systems to activate the electric motor running solely off of battery power when proper conditions present themselves. At times I found my Lexus ES300h test vehicle humming along at 40 mph on battery power only. In mostly Eco mode the ES300h, much like the Prius hybrid, can run on battery power at speeds below 45 mph provided you are barely accelerating. The EV mode, a mode designed to keep the vehicle using the electric motor up to 27 mph, is more of a novelty that can easily be defeated if the gas pedal is pressed too fast or too much acceleration for the motor to handle is recognized by the ECU. Around town the ES300h really shines on fuel consumption figures. I saw times where I was averaging about 45 mpg while roaming around the downtown streets of St. Augustine. Many times I was maximizing my fuel economy by only using the electric motor provided I was cautions of my gas pedal position. While the stated EPA fuel consumption estimates are 40 mpg city and 39 highway, travelling at interstate speeds and above can drastically reduce fuel economy. At times traveling 5 or even 10 mph above the stated interstate speed limit, the ES300h would reduce itself to about 33 mpg. Although, keeping a steady and reasonable highway speed, you will see realistic mpg numbers around 37 and 38 mpg.

The level of refinement in the all-new 2013 Lexus ES300h is nothing short of what you would expect in a Lexus. Fit and finish is top notch while the suspension is perfectly dampened to soak up large bumps and imperfections in the road. On the enthusiastic side of things, the Lexus ES300h is still civilized and graces out of serious lateral maneuvers with a loud howl of the 17-inch low-rolling-resistance tires. I have to say, the new Lexus ES300h, despite being a mid-sized luxury hybrid, does not promote driving crazy in any way. However, the new ES300h can still handle its own among its mid-sized brethren.

In true Lexus form, the new 2013 ES300h has a quiet cabin isolating most road and wind noises. Though, the buzzing sound of the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine winding up when power is needed, comes through the firewall into the cabin as an unusual trait for a Lexus. The only take away from the new ES300h being anything un-Lexus-like is the buzz and slight drone sound from the engine bay when the upper rpm range is reached. Having a CVT transmission makes matters slightly worse under full throttle in keeping the 4-cylinder engine hovering near its 6000 rpm power sweet spot. Aside from the 4-cylinde engine noise, the ES300h is pure luxury.

Inside of the cabin the new Lexus ES300h has well-appointed and soft leather seating areas. The entire cabin, virtually identical to the V6-powered ES350, makes the best use of plastics, soft touch buttons, accent dashboard stitching and bamboo wood trim to treat passengers to a quant taste of luxury. The use of a traditional automatic transmission shifter is a wise choice that goes a long way for those who may be new to the hybrid genre of cars -instead of the Prius’ gated hodgepodge hybrid and iRobot shifter.

The seating areas of the new ES300h are larger than ever for the ES line. No longer just a dressed up Toyota Avalon or Camry, the new ES makes its sportier mark even stronger as a more refined and luxurious entry-level Lexus, even in hybrid form.

A long list of standard safety equipment graces the new Lexus ES300h starting with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags, front knee airbags, Lexus Safety Connect w/automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle location and an emergency assist button. In addition to the safety blanket, the new ES300h hybrid gets standard 17-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights, fog lights, LED day-time-running lights, sunroof, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats w/ power lumbar adjustment, “NuLuxe” premium vinyl upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Lexus Safety Connect emergency communications, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker sound system with a six-CD changer, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

My 2013 Lexus ES300h was optioned out with a navigation system upgrade including hard-drive based GPS navigation system, backup camera, 8-inch VGA LCD screen, Lexus Enform with App Suite, Lexus Insider, voice command, in-dash DVD/CD player, HD Radio and SiriusXM Radio w/ NavTraffic. The Premium Package on my ES300h test vehicle included memory for driver’s seat, outside mirrors and power telescoping steering wheel, bamboo wood trim, and remote keyless entry-linked memory. Additional options included HID headlights, heated front seats, leather-trimmed and wood steering wheel, cargo net and trunk mat. The total as-tested price for my 2013 Lexus ES300h hybrid came to $44,524 including a $895 destination and handling charge. A base Lexus ES300h hybrid starts at just $38,850, which is about a $2,750 premium over its E350 V6-powered sibling.
