Official: 2014 BMW 328d rated at 32/45 mpg

2014 BMW 328d

Filed under:

BMW still hasn’t released official fuel economy numbers for its diesel-powered 2014 328d, but now, those mileage ratings have been posted on the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov website. As expected, the 328d is quite an efficient little machine, with the rear-wheel-drive sedan good for 32 miles per gallon in the city and 45 mpg highway. That even bests the 30/42 mpg of the smaller Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

The last time BMW offered a diesel 3 Series in our market, it was the six-cylinder 335d, which – while mighty quick and excellent to drive – was only offered as a rear-wheel-drive sedan and was rated at 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. For 2014, BMW will offer the 328d with optional xDrive all-wheel drive, though that reduces the fuel economy numbers to 31/43 mpg. Beyond that, the BMW will even sell you a 328d xDrive wagon, which nets the same 31/43 mpg rating, according to FuelEconomy.gov.

Look for the 2014 BMW 328d to hit dealerships this fall, and when it launches, it will be the only diesel offering in its class (until the next Mercedes-Benz C-Class arrives, anyway). Lexus and Infiniti will offer hybrid versions of the IS and Q50, respectively, but we’ve always had a taste for torque, and the 328d’s 2.0-liter engine with 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of twist shouldn’t disappoint.

Spy Shots: Are you the Lexus GS F?

Lexus GS F spy shot - rear three-quarter in garage

Filed under:

It’s been a while since we’ve heard rumors of the fabled high-performance Lexus GS F, but thanks to our eager spy photographers, this looks to be our first real proof of the machine’s existence. We don’t have the usual brace of photos from all angles to work with this time around, our spies saying that every time Lexus‘ garage door opened, engineers jumped in front of the cameras to prevent the car from being photographed.

Even so, we have a pretty clear glimpse at some significant changes to this GS sedan, including the same staggered, quad-pipe exhaust found on the Lexus IS F. There’s also an air diffuser panel nestled between the exhaust outlets, as well as a larger lip spoiler and unique wheels (matching those of the RC coupe) wrapped in high-performance tires.

Last time we heard rumors of the GS F’s existence, sources predicted that the M5-fighting sedan would use a tuned version of Lexus’ 5.0-liter V8, producing something like 465 horsepower. We have also heard that the automaker plans to reduce weight wherever possible, and that the final curb weight will be something like 3,700 pounds.

Of course, those earlier reports said we’d see the car as early as 2012, and that obviously didn’t happen. These days, our spies’ best guess is that the GS F will arrive in time for the 2015 model year.

Report: Chrysler extending production of current Dodge Avenger, Jeep Wrangler, Grand Caravan

By Steven J. Ewing

2013 Dodge Avenger

Filed under:

Are you hesitant to pull the trigger on a brand new Dodge Avenger in hopes that a new one will be coming? Well, don’t hold your breath. According to The Detroit News, Chrysler will be extending production of the current Avenger sedan through the end of 2015.

Originally, we heard that the company would kill the Avenger to better focus its midsize sedan efforts on the Chrysler 200 replacement. But then new reports stated there would indeed be an Avenger successor, and that we could see it as early as next January. This Detroit News report cites supplier sources confirming the extension of Avenger production, though Chrysler has not released an official statement on the matter.

These same suppliers say that the current Jeep Wrangler will live on through mid-2018 – that’s right, another five years. The Detroit News reports that a replacement for the iconic, go-anywhere Jeep was due in mid-2016.

Lastly, the report mentions that the Dodge Grand Caravan minivan will remain in production through late 2017, though its Chrysler Town & Country counterpart will be replaced by an all-new vehicle for the 2016 model year. This only further backs reports that the Grand Caravan will be killed from the Chrysler Group portfolio, with the T&C remaining the only minivan in production at the company’s Windsor facility.

Official: 2014 Mazda3 officially rated at 30/41 mpg, priced from $16,945*

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Mazda3 hatchback - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

It’s hard not to be smitten with the 2014 Mazda3; after all, just look at it. But beyond its slick lines, we found the new compact hatch to be a pretty remarkable steer, offering up good levels of comfort and refinement, not to mention functionality and engagement. Now, there’s more reason to like the 2014 Mazda3, as we’ve just learned that the car will officially be rated at 30 miles per gallon city and 41 mpg highway.

That 30/41 rating is for the Mazda3 sedan fitted with the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G inline four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. Opting for the manual transmission retains the 41-mpg highway number, but drops the city digits to 29. Hatchback models with the 2.0-liter engine achieve 29/40 mpg with the manual ‘box and 30/40 with the automatic.

Mazda also offers a larger 2.5-liter inline-four in the 3, and while a six-speed automatic will be the only transmission available with this engine at launch, the automaker has confirmed that a manual is coming shortly. With the 6AT and 2.5, the Mazda3 sedan is rated at 28/39 mpg, or 29/40 with the company’s i-Eloop regenerative braking system. Hatchback models shrink those numbers to 28/37 and 29/39 mpg, with and without i-Eloop, respectively.

Along with official fuel economy numbers, Mazda has announced pricing for its new compact, and the base i SV model with a six-speed manual transmission will start at $16,945 (*not including $795 for destination).

First Drive: 2014 BMW 4 Series

2014 BMW 4 Series

Because Four Is Greater Than Three

Say what you will about the name 4 Series, there is a method to BMW’s madness. On one hand, it’s easy enough to just buy into the logic that odd numbers are reserved for sedans and wagons, and that even numbers are reserved for coupes and convertibles. On the other hand, consider the idea that the higher numbers are used to separate the more dynamic, more engaging vehicles that use the same platform. It’s that sort of separation that differentiates the 6 Series so nicely from its 5 Series roots, after all. And if we’re being cynical, it also allows BMW to charge a bit more money for its lower-volume offerings.

So with the new two-door version of the 3 Series, BMW has gone the route of strengthening the dynamic virtues of its F30 chassis to create a car that’s more removed from its sedan kin than one might think. And after spending some time with the new 4 Series on the roads around Lisbon, Portugal, as well as the famous Circuito do Estoril racetrack, it’s increasingly clear that calling this car a 3 Series Coupe simply wouldn’t be fair.

BMW shows off 435i Coupe with M Performance parts

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 BMW 435i Coupe with M Performance parts

Filed under:

Greetings from the famous Circuito do Estoril racetrack in Portugal. We’re here to put the 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe through its paces, and we’ll have the chance to sample the updated 2014 BMW M5 with its new Competition Pack, as well. But before going out for some hot laps, we took a few minutes to check out this 435i Coupe that’s been fitted with a full suite of goodies from the BMW M Performance parts catalog.

Starting with the exterior, carbon fiber bits are the most noticeable additions, with the lightweight material added in the form of a massive front splitter, mirror caps and a rear spoiler. Other visual changes include lightweight 20-inch wheels, a blacked-out grille, and unique M Performance side stripes. No, that’s not a shadow you see under the 435i’s strong side character line – that’s a stripe. Yes, we’re serious.

Inside (we couldn’t get photos of the interior, sorry!), BMW has added its sport steering wheel with race display, unique M floormats, steel pedals, and a whole mess of carbon fiber and Alcantara trim.

But the M catalog isn’t just about added flair. Legitimate performance parts can be had, and for starters, this 435i is fitted with a power kit that increases engine output from 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque to 334 and 332, respectively. Building upon that, there’s a limited-slip differential, performance suspension, upgraded brakes with red calipers and a rear apron diffuser finished in carbon.

BMW hasn’t announced official pricing for the 4 Series goodies as of this writing, but we should have a clearer idea of how much coin each option will warrant closer to the kit’s debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. Until then, have a glance through our gallery of live photos to take it all in for yourself.

Long Term: 2013 Nissan Pathfinder: June 2013

Long-Term 2013 Nissan Pathfinder - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

When we say that our long-term 2013 Nissan Pathfinder has been busy, we mean it. Want proof? In the past month, the big, brown Nissan was only idle enough for us to take it in for its 11,500-mile routine service and to shoot a couple of new photos of the long-termer in Detroit.

Most recently, the Pathfinder spent a few weeks in the hands of AOL Autos‘ executive editor Sharon Carty, who used the three-row CUV to haul her entire family from Detroit to New Jersey and back… twice. That’s a pretty serious amount of miles, but it gave Sharon a really solid look into how the vehicle holds up for the needs of a family with kids of different ages.

Report: Mini Clubvan axed after just 50 sales

By Steven J. Ewing

Mini Cooper Clubvan

Filed under:

Well, that didn’t last long. According to Green Car Reports, Mini has discontinued the Clubvan from its model range in the United States.

Nathalie Bauters, Mini’s US communications manager, cited “relatively low demand and the effect of an excessive 25-percent tax on vehicles for commercial use (known as ‘the Chicken Tax‘)” as the key reasons for axing the Clubman from our market, GCR reports. The 2013 Clubvan launched in the US earlier this year, and to date roughly 50 examples have been sold.

The Clubvan, based on the Clubman model, features a flat load floor behind the two front seats, with blacked-out (well, body-colored) side windows. This nifty little cargo wagon could carry up to 33 cubic feet of goods, which while useful, pales in comparison to more capacious offerings like the Ford Transit Connect van.

Bauters told Green Car Reports that “sales of the Mini Clubvan have been strong in other markets worldwide, many of which benefit from tax advantages,” meaning the model will likely carry on elsewhere in the world.

Official: Limited-edition VW Beetle GSR priced from $29,995*

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR on show stand - front three-quarter view, yellow

Filed under:

Volkswagen has announced that pricing of its limited-edition 2014 Beetle GSR will start from $29,995, *not including $820 for destination. This throwback to the original 1970s “Yellow Black Racer” first debuted at the Chicago Auto Show and will be limited to just 3,500 units worldwide.

The prominent black-and-yellow paint scheme sets the GSR apart from lesser turbocharged Beetle models, and the car rides on 19-inch Tornado alloy wheels wrapped in 235/40-series tires. That same color combination makes its way inside the Bug, with yellow contrast stitching on the black leather surfaces. Additionally, there are sport seats, a sport steering wheel (with a serialized number plaque), plus a unique R-Line dash pad and GSR shift lever.

The Beetle GSR builds off the R-Line model, powered by Volkswagen’s tried-and-true 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that puts out 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque in this application. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, though Volkswagen will offer the GSR with its six-speed DSG dual-clutch ‘box for an additional $1,100. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes just 6.6 seconds in the GSR, and top speed is limited to 130 mph.

Scroll down for Volkswagen’s official pricing release on this limited-edition B.

Spy Shots: 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet spotted testing in the nude

By Steven J. Ewing

Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet spy shots

Filed under:

The Porsche 911 wouldn’t be the Porsche 911 unless there were twenty-something different models to choose from (note: we are not complaining), and the latest one was just spied by our trusty photographers out on Germany’s N├╝rburgring. Feast your eyes on the 911 Turbo Cabriolet – the droptop version of the new Turbo wonder that debuted in May – looking all sorts of stealth in its black-on-black-on-black prototype scheme.

Mechanically, the 911 Turbo Cab should be identical to the fixed-roof version, meaning a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six engine will live in the car’s rump, putting out something like 520 horsepower. Of course, there’s also the hotter Turbo S version of the coupe, and we expect that to get the droptop treatment, as well, with 560 horsepower on tap. The added weight of the folding top and additional structural supports will likely make for slightly slower 0-60 times for both cars, though considering the base Turbo will hit 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds, “slower” is a very relative term indeed. All that force will run to the ground via all-wheel drive, managed by Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

The wide stance of the 911 Turbo Coupe carries over to the Cabriolet, no doubt fitted with the same (standard) 20-inch wheels. Inside, the usual luxury amenities will be on hand, along with nearly endless customization options.

Given that the Frankfurt Motor Show isn’t too far off in the future, we expect to see the Turbo Cabriolet officially bow before then. For now, check it out in the high-res spy shot gallery above.

Long Term: 2014 Mazda6: June 2013

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

The 2014 Mazda6 is our most recent addition to the Autoblog long-term fleet, and we spent the month of June getting to know our Soul Red tester, generally enjoying the honeymoon phase of this twelve-month relationship. During June, the Mazda6 spent the majority of its time with director of photography Drew Phillips, who in addition to putting together this pretty gallery of our rakish long-term car, had a lot to say about it as a daily driver.

You see, not too long before Mazda delivered our long-term 6, Drew bought a 2014 CX-5 crossover to support his growing family. The CX-5 was the first vehicle to use Mazda’s full suite of Skyactiv technologies, and we’ve generally enjoyed the good-to-drive CUV. A lot of that CX-5 goodness lies beneath the more shapely lines of this sleek Mazda6 sedan, so it’s only fitting that Drew had a lot of comparisons between Mazda’s two housemates during his month behind the wheel.

Report: Mercedes under investigation by feds over faulty, possibly flaming taillights

By Steven J. Ewing

2008 Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport

Filed under:

According to The Detroit News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans over the possibility of faulty taillamps that, in some situations, may even catch fire. Some 218,000 C-Class vehicles are being investigated, all of which are from the 2008 and 2009 model years.

NHTSA has reportedly received 21 statements from owners citing the brake lights or turn signals dimming or failing to light. In some cases, drivers reported a burning smell, a few noting that some of the vehicle’s electrical parts had melted. What’s even more alarming is that some drivers reported smelling smoke or seeing burn marks in the trunk. One driver even reportedly saw small flames coming from the rear lamp connector when the trunk was open.

Scary stuff, to be sure, though NHTSA says that this problem hasn’t caused any injuries. Still, the government agency will investigate the problem further to see if this actually warrants a recall.

First Drive: 2014 Mazda3

The Cure For The Common Corolla

I hate the Toyota Corolla. I’m not talking about the new 2014 model; I can’t yet judge a car I haven’t driven. I’m referring to the current, old-as-dirt sedan. As an appliance, I get why people buy it, but it represents everything that I, as a car enthusiast, dislike. I don’t like looking at it, I don’t like sitting in it, and I really don’t like driving it. There is absolutely no amount of emotion dialed into any part of the Corolla experience and every other vehicle in the segment is a far better choice. But still, somehow, Toyota sells ’em like hotcakes.

Thankfully, there are a lot of people who agree with me. And for folks like us, companies like Mazda exist. This small Japanese automaker places emotion and driver involvement as its top priorities when creating new products, and mostly – especially in recent years – the end results have been great. The new CX-5 crossover is a doll, to say nothing of the rakish and lovely new Mazda6 that launched earlier this year. And let’s not forget the Miata

It’s a shame, then, that Mazda’s sales numbers have never correlated with how we enthusiasts feel about the products, though a lot of that simply has to do with the company’s weaker advertising efforts, not to mention a less robust dealer network. Mazda continues to build cars that are great to drive above all, and the automaker is slowly but surely getting its refinement issues and infotainment technologies in order. This new 2014 Mazda3 aims to offer the best of the brand’s new Skyactiv powertrain DNA, housed in a package with features and technologies that stand up to every other car in the highly competitive C segment.

It is everything the Corolla is not. And it’s fantastic.

Shanghai: Honda concept dials M for minivan [w/video]

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Yes, it looks a bit, uh, toothy, but what you see here is a concept that previews a brand new small MPV specifically designed for the Chinese market. Called the Concept M, the swoopy Honda was designed in Japan and the automaker is currently aiming to launch a production version in China sometime in 2014.

Honda hasn’t released many details about its small van concept, simply saying that it “offers the attributes of a passenger car while adding new value through the realization of a comfortable and spacious cabin space made possible by Honda’s packaging technologies, and the fun of driving.” Doesn’t sound too bad to us.

Have a glance at the Concept M in the gallery above (full disclosure: we don’t have live shots of this one), and take a look below for the official press blast direct from the MPV‘s Shanghai debut, as well as a promotional video showing the new concept from all angles. Oh, and be sure to turn your volume down before pushing the play button.

Shanghai: Mitsubishi Concept G4 leaves us feeling blue

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

To say we were unimpressed by the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage that debuted in New York earlier this year would be one heck of an understatement. So pardon us for not oohing and aahing over the Concept G4 that we’re seeing for the first time here in Shanghai. It is, basically, a Mirage sedan. Try to contain your excitement.

Mitsubishi states that it intends to roll out the production version of the G4 Concept globally, powered by a 1.2-liter MIVEC engine mated to a continuously variable transmission that should at least be good for some substantial fuel economy gains. The Mirage, after all, is rated at 37/44 miles per gallon city/highway. We’re also told that the car will be very lightweight, and that this should aid in making this thing not drive like a total dud.

We’ll wait and see how the relatively sharp lines of the concept transfer to production form, but given that we already know what the Mirage looks like, we have a pretty good feeling that we’ll be just as underwhelmed the second time around. Have a look below for the press blast.

Shanghai: BAIC 500 and 900 Concepts look cool, offer little info

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Chinese company BAIC showed up to the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show with a pair of concepts, the 500 (above) and 900 (right). And while we don’t have much in the way of information about these vehicles from the People’s Republic, they’re still pretty neat and worthy of some attention.

According to CarNewsChina.com, the 500 concept looks to be purely a design study – a sort of homage to the Beijing BJ212 SUV, and it’s unclear if this thing will ever see production. Still, it looks rough and ready – there are lots of styling elements here that take cues from off-road stalwarts like the Land Rover Range Rover and Toyota FJ Cruiser, albeit in a much more, uh, Chinese package.

The 900, on the other hand, takes the shape of a svelte sedan, and Ward’s Auto reports that it’s even built on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class platform, using V6 power from the German automaker. Ward’s states that the 900 concept previews the next-generation design DNA for BAIC‘s premium models, and features large, carbon fiber gullwing doors that, obviously, will not make it to production.

Have a look at both concepts in our galleries above and below, and let us know what you think of the BAIC pair in the comments.

Shanghai: 2014 Maserati Ghibli snarls in Shanghai

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Big things are happening at Maserati, where the automaker is looking to increase its sales to 50,000 units annually. In addition to the revised Quattroporte that we saw at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Maserati has launched the all-new Ghibli here in Shanghai – a smaller, more driver-focused model that will take on the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

At launch, the Ghibli will be offered with three six-cylinder engines, two gas and one diesel. The base engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, good for a 0-62 time of 5.6 seconds. The more powerful Ghibli S, however, comes with a twin-turbocharged version of this engine, good for 410 hp and 406 lb-ft, reducing that 0-62 time to just five seconds flat. On the diesel end, the Ghibli will offer a 3.0-liter diesel V6 with 275 hp and 443 lb-ft of twist, able to do that same 62-mile-per-hour run in a still impressive 6.3 seconds. The more powerful Ghibli S will also be available with Maserati’s new Q4 all-wheel-drive system, though we’re told that this feature cannot be had on right-hand-drive versions.

As for what we can see here in Shanghai, the Ghibli looks pretty darn good, though that front fascia reminds us an awful lot of the BMW 3 Series. (Seriously, just picture the Bimmer with a more gaping grille opening.) Maserati will offer the Ghibli with standard 18-inch wheels, though 19s, 20s, and even 21s will be available as optional extras.

Have a look through our photo galleries above and below, and let us know what you think of the new Ghibli in the comments.

Shanghai: Suzuki Authentics Concept is genuine but drab

By Steven J. Ewing

Suzuki Authentics - front three-quarter view live at 2013 Shanghai Motor Show

Looks can certainly be deceiving. Have a glance at this new Suzuki Authentics concept, for example – we were told that this would, essentially, be a proper sedan version of the new SX4, but our folks on the ground in Shanghai tell us it’s actually much larger. Like, bigger than the Kizashi. (Hey, remember the Kizashi?)

Regardless, Suzuki says that the Authentics concept previews a C-segment vehicle for the Chinese market. A good move, too, since that segment has the highest volume in the Chinese market. (That’s why automakers like Ford, for example, have more than one offering in the class.) If we’re honest, the Authentics concept looks a bit “meh” for our tastes – there isn’t a whole lot of emotion going on here with the design. Consider it a competitor for that spiffy new Ford Escort that also took the stage here in Shanghai.

We don’t have any more details about the Authentics concept at the moment, but considering the fact that Suzuki has officially exited the US market, at least we don’t have to worry about this thing showing up on our shores anytime soon.

Shanghai: 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is one mean green machine

The entire Porsche Panamera lineup gets a refresh for the 2014 model year, and new additions to the range include two long-wheelbase models and this E-Hybrid fuel-sipper that makes its debut here at the Shanghai Motor Show. And, well, we say “fuel-sipper lightly.”

Porsche has packed its hybrid Panamera with 416 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of torque, and that certainly makes for one quick sedan-hatchback-thing. Hitting 60 miles per hour will reportedly take just 5.2 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 167 mph. And while Porsche hasn’t revealed specific powertrain details, the company says that the S E-Hybrid “improves upon the concept offered by the previous Panamera S Hybrid with a more powerful electric motor,” which leads us to believe that the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine at the heart of it all still remains intact.

Fuel economy numbers (or estimates) have not been released as of this writing, but we expect to have that information closer to the car’s on-sale date later this year. As for the new battery system, Porsche says that when plugged into a 240-volt charging station, it can be fully charged in just two and a half hours. When topped off, the Panamera S E-Hybrid should have an electric driving range of around 20 miles at speeds up to 84 mph, though, obviously, not at the same time.

Have a look at the press release below for more information.
