How to wire 2 motors for both polarity reversing and series/parallel

By i6pwr

I’m looking to upgrade my sons ride-on toy to handle stronger motors. The ride-on toy has a wiring harness rated for 30A. What I want to accomplish is the same thing but for handling 60A of 12V current. There is a HI/LO shifter/switch that simply changes the motors from series to parallel and also a polarity reversing switch for reverse.

I have switched the stock 550 size motors to a higher torque set and they draw about 50A when climbing small hills, the stockers pull just under 30A. He can run around by himself but if he takes a passenger then he starts tripping breakers.

What I had in mind is using the factory on/off accel pedal, shifter w/ reverse to handle the 12V signal leads for some 60A relays. The accel pedal is easy and I have that drawn up, but using separate relays for the series/parallel switching is challenging at least for me, since I need to incorporate a reverse.

There is also a small ground wire that is connected back to motor POS + to allow for braking.

Here’s a sketch of what I’m working on…the factory wiring is on the left and what I have been working on is on the right. The Polarity reversing relay is a borrowed pic and could serve as a reverse either solo or using two relays. Not something I have but is something I have found that handles high current.

The factory shifter has a dual-layer buss bar in the housing which routes the circuits as needed which makes this project slightly difficult to replicate.

I have ample room to run extra wires and what I would like to retain is the factory shifter for the switching if all possible.

I have toyed with hall-effect scooter throttles and ESC’s but all require a minimum of 20V. Could this idea of using relays work or should I try for some high-current motor controllers?

All help and criticism appreciated.

McAfee Report Details Risks to Retailers Through Point of Sale Systems

Calls for Merchants to Increase Protections to Address Security and Privacy Concerns

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– McAfee today released Retail Reputations: A Risky Business, a report on the growing risks the industry is facing with both legacy and newer point of sale systems (POS). The report discusses how the retailing industry’s reliance on third parties for service and support is creating security vulnerability and privacy issues. Today’s advanced security threats mean that a retailer needs to be more than just PCI DSS compliant in order to protect customer information beyond credit cardholder data.

“The industry is very fragmented with a large base of smaller merchants utilizing secondary market or used point of sale systems,” said Kim Singletary, director of retail solutions marketing at McAfee. “Merchants who do not have a broader security and privacy focus are leaving themselves vulnerable to susceptible systems and processes. If security, compliance and privacy adherence were more transparent to consumers, then retailers could look at these things as business differentiators rather than obligations.”

System integrators in the retail industry are being asked to be certified by the PCI Council as a key component to the technology and service supply chain to resolve the inconsistent attention to security and vulnerable configuration issues that could lead to security compromise. Retailers need to be concerned with how they evolve customer engagement and ensure their security strategy and plans address the growing threat landscape. Securing POS systems from basic system functions to newer applications that utilize customer information is essential to protecting the retailer’s brand and reputation.

The McAfee report reveals that POS systems are updated too infrequently, creating vast windows of opportunities for criminals to find and exploit vulnerabilities. Once a new vulnerability is located, businesses using the same types of systems can be easily identified and targeted for attack. The vulnerabilities with POS systems that are not regularly updated increase the likelihood that consumers’ cardholder and personal data is at risk.

“Retailers have worked hard not to store cardholder data, however, they still maintain a great deal of specific proprietary customer data on their networks that are a potential treasure trove for criminals and identity thieves,” said Greg Buzek, founder and president of IHL Consulting Group. “When a security breach occurs, retailers are …read more

Researchers find new point-of-sale malware called BlackPOS

A new piece of malware that infects point-of-sale (POS) systems has already been used to compromise thousands of payment cards belonging to customers of U.S. banks, according to researchers from Group-IB, a security and computer forensics company based in Russia.

POS malware is not a new type of threat, but it’s increasingly used by cybercriminals, said Andrey Komarov, the head of international projects at Group-IB, Wednesday via email.

Komarov said that Group-IB’s researchers have identified five different POS malware threats in the past six months. However, the most recent one, which was found earlier this month, has been investigated extensively, leading to the discovery of a command-and-control server and the identification of the cybercriminal gang behind it, he said.

The malware is being advertised on Internet underground forums under the rather generic name of “Dump Memory Grabber by Ree,” but researchers from Group-IB’s computer emergency response team (CERT-GIB) have seen an administration panel associated with the malware that used the name “BlackPOS.”

NCR Silver Makes Everyday Easier for Small Businesses with Social Media Integration

NCR Silver Makes Everyday Easier for Small Businesses with Social Media Integration

DULUTH, Ga.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– NCR Corporation announced today that the NCR Silvermobile point of sale (POS) solution has been enhanced to empower small business owners to provide marketing messages to customers via the NCR Silver email marketing engine and update businesses’ Facebook pages with the same messages at the same time.

The NCR Silver social media update makes marketing to customers easier, with more impact, than ever before. With one click, small business owners can now engage in email marketing campaigns and at the same time update their businesses’ Facebook page with the same messages about their business or products. The integrated social media marketing saves small business owners time, streamlines their marketing efforts and empowers them to build a community of customers, which in turn drives loyalty and sales.

According to industry research, 73 percent of small business owners use social media as part of their marketing mix, and the majority of them don’t employ anyone to help with this work. Forty-one percent of small business owners report that making their marketing dollars go further is one of their biggest challenges. So maximizing the effective use of free social media sites, while also maximizing business owners limited time, is crucial to building and maintaining a successful business.

For more custom messages, like “we miss you” campaigns or special discounts for the most loyal customers, the social sharing feature can be easily turned off so that a business‘s broader social audience doesn’t see these more targeted messages.

“For the small business owner who is doing everything, time saved by integrating Facebook posts with their email campaigns is time they can spend helping customers, growing their businesses or being with their families,” said Christian Nahas, vice president and general manager of the NCR small business team. “NCR Silver’s mission is to help small businesses achieve their goals. We consistently hear that time and resources are two things small business owners can always use more of. With the social media marketing update, NCR Silver is giving these operators back valuable time while adding value to their business.”

NCR Silver’s cloud-based architecture enables this social media integration update to deploy automatically to existing NCR Silver customers and is included in all new installations for new customers. Earlier in the month NCR Silver was updated to provide business owners with the ability to launch and manage gift card programs.

McAfee warns of malware targeting point-of-sale systems

A new piece of custom malware sold on the underground Internet market is being used to siphon payment card data from point-of-sale (POS) systems, according to security researchers from antivirus vendor McAfee.

Dubbed vSkimmer, the Trojan-like malware is designed to infect Windows-based computers that have payment card readers attached to them, McAfee security researcher Chintan Shah said last week in a blog post.

The malware was first detected by McAfee’s sensor network on February 13 and is currently being advertised on cybercriminal forums as being better than Dexter, a different POS malware program that was discovered back in December.

Once installed on a computer, vSkimmer gathers information about the OS, including its version, unique GUID identifier, default language, hostname, and active username. This information is sent back to the control and command server in encoded format as part of all HTTP requests and is used by the attackers to keep track of individually infected machines. The malware waits for the server to respond with a “dlx” (download and execute) or “upd” (update) command.

Will Europeans Embrace Underground Currencies When Draconian Cash Ban Takes Effect?

By Breaking News

europe 2 SC Will Europeans Embrace Underground Currencies When Draconian Cash Ban Takes Effect?

Yesterday we reported that the European Union was set to ban cash transactions over 500 Euros, bringing the entire continent one step closer to a monopolized, and now totally monitored currency.

As the EU based news source that I quoted yesterday mentioned:

“Any transaction in excess of 500 euros will soon only be allowed via credit or debit card or by check, according to a plan by the Finance Ministry aimed at combating tax evasion. The ceiling for cash transactions is to be lowered from 1,500 euros today to 500 euros and could be reduced further over in the course of 2013. Ministry sources say that in the first quarter of the new year all companies and certain self-employed individuals will have to obtain the POS (point-of-sale) terminals that provide for card transactions.”

As I explained, this is a very alarming situation, but it is likely that this will backfire, pushing Europeans to find other ways of trading, ways that are off the grid and free from surveillance, inflation and taxation.

These decentralized community based currencies have already been thriving in many areas of Europe, and the following months and years will probably see a sharp incline in underground currencies if these sorts of measures continue.

This underground currency development in Europe and other parts of the world is something that I have been watching over the past several years.

In areas that have been most effected so far in the worldwide economic crisis there has been an increasing use of online open source currencies. These currencies help communities barter with one another easily and effectively without using the Euro which is becoming increasingly useless by the day. Last year there was a lot of news about bitcoin being more stable than the Euro, with more and more investors transferring their funds into these types of currencies.
