Fashion Icon Minnie Mouse Lands Love Magazine's Latest Cover

By Justin Fenner

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Minnie Mouse should feel very flattered by the covers of Love Magazine‘s fifth anniversary issue.

“As work began on this issue, that famous Herb Ritts shot of Madonna popped up on my Instagram feed, the one where she’s in bed wearing the Minnie Mouse ears,” said Love editor Katie Grand. “So we set about getting my favorite models in Minnie Mouse ears. . . . But that wasn’t enough. We had to get Minnie Mouse herself in on the act too.”

The end result is six covers that feature Minnie Mouse and models Cara Delevingne, Georgia May Jagger, Edie Campbell, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Chiharu Okunugi. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott photographed them wearing mouse-ear headbands created by the likes of Gucci, Miu Miu, Loewe, and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

A look at some of the covers and the headbands here in the gallery.

Edie Campbell Gets Caged For Alexander McQueen's Fall 2013 Campaign

By Justin Fenner

If Edie Campbell is getting a big head from all the Fall 2013 campaigns she’s landed (Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, and Jil Sander, to name a few), you can’t tell in her ads for Alexander McQueen. Among the many things she wears in the shots, which were taken by photographer David Sims, she dons the metal, pearl-studded head cage McQueen models sported on the runway. And even though she said she felt “not human” walking around in it, she thinks it’s beautiful.

“I don’t think it’s at all about the idea of caging or entrapment – it’s much more to do with glorifying and bejeweling somebody,” she said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK. There’s nothing misogynistic about it. It’s the highest form of pageantry – they’re practically works of art.”

The clothes in the collection, however, are another story.

“I have to admit they’re not hugely comfortable to wear!” Campbell said. “With layers of corsets and undergarments and waist-cinchers and hip implants, it’s not like whacking on a shirt. You very much have to be dressed in it by somebody who knows how all the layers fit together.”

That Faux Fur Was Real Fur: 3 Retailers Busted Over Mislabeling

By Matt Brownell

Neiman Marcus faux fur is real

Federal Trade CommissionA Revolve Clothing ad on the Web for a Marc Jacobs coat, which falsely said its hood was made of faux fur.

Businesses get in trouble all the time for trying to pass off counterfeit items as the real thing. But in a strange reversal, a few retailers have been busted for selling real fur, but claiming that it was fake.

The Federal Trade Commission announced Tuesday that three companies — Neiman Marcus, DrJays.com and Revolve Clothing — had agreed to settle charges that they misrepresented real fur products as faux fur. Several products were involved in the fur scandal, including Burberry jackets, Eryn Brinie vests, and some boots and shoes.

By misrepresenting real fur as faux fur, the companies were in violation of the Fur Act. And while it might seem unusual to bust a company for passing off an authentic product as a phoney one, it’s not hard to understand why some people might be upset by the deception: Many shoppers deliberately steer clear of real fur out of concern for animal rights, and we imagine a few customers might be horrified to learn that they’d purchased a genuine rabbit pelt.

“By not disclosing the products contained real fur, that means the companies also didn’t honor their obligation under the law to truthfully tell people the kind of fur and its country of origin,” wrote FTC attorney Lesley Fair in a blog post about the settlement.

In a few cases, the companies involved in the settlement simply failed to indicate the animal name or country of origin for the product. Neiman Marcus, for instance, said that a rabbit fur boot was actually made with mink fur, which is bad news for any rabbit lovers who bought the boots thinking they were only abetting the slaughter of minks.

The retailers won’t be fined for their misrepresentations. But stiffer penalties could be in the offing if any of the three knowingly violate the Fur Act again in the next 20 years.

Interestingly, this is the second time this year that a company got in trouble for selling a fake-ish product that turned out to be a bit too authentic. Back in January, a New Jersey-based dietary supplement company that sold “all-natural herbal extract” pills promising “enhanced erections” and other sexual benefits was forced to issue a recall after it was discovered that they contained actual erectile-dysfunction drugs.

Marc Jacobs Reschedules Both Fashion Week Shows

By Christina Perez

Apparently even big designers have trouble getting their stuff through customs. Thanks to delivery delays, told WWD.

And it’s not just the mainline show that’s been affected; the Marc by Marc Jacobs showtime has been changed as well. That show will now take place at the Lincoln Center tents on Monday at 8 p.m. – the Collection’s original spot on the schedule – because the set for the Marc Jacobs show is already being built at the Lexington Armory.

“Marc and I are extremely sorry for this inconvenience. We just want to have the best show possible and show all the product that our design team has been working on so hard for the last six months. We completely understand if people have to get on a plane to go to London,” Duffy explained. “We’re not expecting people to change those plans or other plans just for us. We are live streaming the show. Still, we recognize the significant inconvenience and are very sorry about the situation,”

Later the brand tweeted, “Sorry everyone, we just want to make it right,” before tweeting a formal apologie note.

Riccardo Tisci Renews Contract With LVMH, but What About Marc Jacobs?

By Justin Fenner

The industry rejoiced today over the news that Riccardo Tisci has extended his contract at Marc Jacobs has signed on for another stint at Louis Vuitton.

Tisci will continue in his role as Givenchy’s creative director for the next three years while the brand “shifts into an expansion mode” that hopes to capitalize on its current popularity. Tisci’s wildly salable clothing – like the rottweiler t-shirt from Fall 2011 that became a hit with customers and celebrities alike – are doubtless a part of his staying power at the brand.

In early January, Jacobs mentioned at both the WWD CEO Summit and a talk with Fern Mallis at 92nd Street Y that he and his business partner Marc Duffy were heading to Paris to talk about their contracts with LVMH, which were last renewed at the beginning of 2011. “I’m not really sure,” he said when WWD‘s executive editor Bridget Foley pressed him about specifics at the summit. “I know that we’re discussing renegotiations.”

There’s not much evidence to suggest that Jacobs hasn’t signed on the dotted line, although when he talked about his tenure at Louis Vuitton with Mallis, he said, “I’ve been there for 15 years – though I don’t know if I’ll be there for 15 more.” Jacobs is the only creative director Louis Vuitton has ever had, and it’s difficult to imagine what the brand would look like without his aesthetic and elaborate runway staging.

But creative directors – unlike Supreme Court justices or tenured university professors – don’t get lifetime appointments. Jacobs was, for a long time, the front-runner for the creative director’s chair at Dior, suggesting that he’s prepared to leave Vuitton for the right opportunity. But after the Dior talks ended, Jacobs said of his job, “There is so much more left to do and building Louis Vuitton into a fashion company is something nobody else can say they really started.”

Marc Jacobs On How His Psychiatrist Helped Him Make the Dior Decision

By Justin Fenner

In a wide-ranging conversation with Fern Mallis on stage at 92nd Street Y this week, Marc Jacobs said he discussed not taking over for John Galliano in sessions with his psychiatrist.

“It was actually my psychiatrist who said, ‘How is this going to improve the quality of your life?’ and I said, ‘It’s not.’ I mean, two more shows – and after Galliano, what he has done – when am I going to live my life?” Jacobs asked.

The designer also talked about growing up in New York City, studying at Parsons, and being treated for substance abuse. A few highlights from the conversation below.

On going to college: “Every day was like a fashion parade. There was a little troop of us. It was me, a girl named Susan Martin, Chris Iles, and Tracy Reese. The four of us were inseparable. We were the overachievers. We would do five times what was required just because we really enjoyed it.”

On the critics: “There are very few, and I don’t mean this in a bitchy way, journalists who I respect. I don’t think a lot of them know what they’re looking at. . . I’m fine with constructive criticism but I’m not so good with stupidity. It’s one thing to say ‘I like or I don’t like’ but to misread or mislabel something or to be out of sorts because it was raining, or a late show or you were hungry. That just all feels not valid.”

On his sobriety: “I wouldn’t say I’m 100 percent sober. What I’m saying is perfection is not my deal. Yeah, maybe I have had a glass of wine or a couple of whiskeys. Maybe I’ve smoked a joint or something like that. Or other things, but I’m mostly sober.”

On what he tells aspiring designers: “What’s worked for me is not quitting, being more passionate about what I do and not giving up. And when I don’t believe in myself turning to other people who believe in me.”
