Zombie Baby On Season 4 Premiere Of ‘The Walking Dead’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Season 4 of “The Walking Dead,” premiering in October, promises to introduce new kinds of walkers we haven’t seen before on the grisly AMC thriller, including a zombie baby.

“There’s a little hint of that in the premiere,” says Danai Gurira (Michonne). Executive producer Gregory Nicotero says the series almost went there last season when Daryl and Maggie searched for baby formula at a day-care center.

Official: Hyundai shows Walking Dead Veloster Zombie Survival Machine at Comic-Con

By Brandon Turkus

Hyundai Veloster Turbo made up for The Walking Dead tv show - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

The Walking Dead, the hit zombie apocalypse show on AMC, has enjoyed a marketing tie-in with Hyundai for two seasons now. If you’ve watched the show, you’d no doubt seen Rick Grimes, his sociopath-in-training son Carl and emerging hero Glenn Rhee avoiding the dead behind the wheel of a light-green Hyundai Tucson. That relationship expanded beyond the show when Hyundai brought an Elantra Coupe-based Zombie Survival Machine to last year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

For this year’s Comic-Con, the new Zombie Survival Machine is just a touch faster, funkier and deadlier. Based on a Hyundai Veloster Turbo and built by Galpin Auto Sports to decapitate as many Walkers as possible, this four-door hatch has been heavily modified. The headlights, taillights and windows are all protected with a combination of wrought iron and chainlink fencing. There’s also plenty of armor on the body panels.

Passive zombie killing features abound, like the “horde plow” on the front bumper and sawblade grille. But by and large, the majority of the Veloster Turbo Zombie Survival Machine’s offensive power comes from a combination of firearms and chainsaws. A .50-caliber machine gun is mounted on the roof, along with a pair of assault rifles on the hood. Each door features blades along the base and a machine gun. Melee weapons can be found in the back, including a spiked baseball bat or katana.

We see a few issues with the Veloster Turbo ZSM. Clearly, the creators have never read Max Brooks’ excellent book, World War Z, otherwise they’d know that flame throwers (of which we counted three) are ineffective against the dead, as are rapid-fire weapons. Our nerdy minds aside, this is a pretty cool one-off concept from one of the very best shows on television. But if you think you can do better, Hyundai has set up an app for fans to design their own Zombie Survival Machines. The winning entry will get their car built and put on display at New York Comic-Con in October. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to see if we can retrofit our long-term Veloster Turbo into a Zombie Survival Machine.

‘Breaking Bad’ Photos For The Final Episodes Look Dangerous

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The premiere of the final eight episodes of “Breaking Bad” is less than a month away, and AMC has released a new batch of more than 50 photos from the Emmy-winning meth drama.

The new images are a mix of gallery shots taken in a desert photo shoot and episodic photos from “Blood Money,” the first episode of the drama’s last half-season.

In addition to solo cast portraits, there are plenty of photos of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) and Hank Shrader (Dean Norris) staring each other down, and lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) trying to talk Jesse down. In another creepy portrait, Walter and Skyler White (Anna Gunn) are burying something (or someone).

Shanghai: BMW X4 hatches its fastback shape in Shanghai

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

BMW X4 Concept reveal live at 2013 Shanghai Motor Show

Filed under:

The day has finally come for BMW to pull the covers off its X4 Concept at the Shanghai Motor Show. The machine brings few surprises – we’ve already seen an official image gallery from the German automaker, so its exterior shape was well known – but at least now we get to see it with our own eyes, and with the lenses of our very own cameras.

You can clearly see the fastback roofline in our high-res image gallery above, along with the jacked-up stance that allows BMW to call this machine a Sports Activity Vehicle, which basically means “Crossover” to our friends in Munich. We’ve seen similar vehicle shapes before, most notably in the form of the BMW X6, but also as far back as the 1980s from the likes of AMC.

We fully expect the transition from concept to production to be pretty seamless, so what we see here is, for the most part, what we’ll see on the showroom floor in 2014. Feel free to peruse the press release below, but first, be sure to browse through our live images from Shanghai and let us know what you think.

Bryan Cranston Time 100: When Jon Hamm Met The ‘Breaking Bad’ Star

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Bryan Cranston earned a coveted spot on the Time 100 list and the magazine asked his fellow AMC star Jon Hamm to do the write-up.

In the piece, “Mad Men” star Hamm discussed his bizarre initial encounter with the “Breaking Bad’s” leading man.

“The first time I met Bryan Cranston, he was standing in his underwear. We were doing a photo shoot for a little-known network called AMC, and he was in a rubber chemistry apron, tighty whities and desert boots, while I was in an impeccably tailored 1960s suit, with slicked-back hair and a cigarette dangling from my mouth,” Hamm wrote. “Our shows hadn’t premiered yet. We were simply two actors, in costume and out of context. He was friendly, funny, gregarious, humble and lovely.”

‘Breaking Bad’ Returns On August 11, 2013 For Premiere Of Final 8 Episodes

By The Huffington Post News Editors

“Breaking Bad” returns with its final eight episodes on Sunday, August 11 at 9 p.m. ET.

AMC announced the remainder of Season 5 will be paired with a talk show a la “The Walking Dead’s” “Talking Dead,” this one titled “Talking Bad.”

“Six years ago at AMC, we set a goal to create premium television on basic cable and we began to develop and nurture shows that would set us apart,” Charlie Collier, president and general manager of AMC, said in a statement. “As we lay out the year ahead for advertisers at our 2013/14 Upfront, it is an honor to have such a breadth of development and programming to share and to be in business with such a high caliber of talent in front of and behind the camera.”

Kip Pardue On ‘Mad Men’: ‘Sunshine’ From ‘Remember The Titans’ Guest Stars

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 6, Episode 3 of AMC’s “Mad Men,” titled “The Collaborators.”

Mad Men” specializes in surprising, nostalgic guest-casting. After “Freaks & Geeks” alum Linda Cardellini stole the show in the AMC drama’s Season 6 premiere, another early 2000s favorite had a guest appearance in the show’s third episode: Kip Pardue, who is fondly remembered as Ronnie “Sunshine” Bass, the long-haired, left-handed California quarterback in Denzel Washington‘s high-school football film “Remember The Titans.”

Pardue’s “Mad Men” guest spot had him playing a hot shot Heinz ketchup executive, who stopped by Sterling Cooper in a blue suit for an unofficial visit. While Don (Jon Hamm) and Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton) were excited to vie for his business, Heinz beans executive Raymond Geiger (John Sloman) made it clear that the visit was just for show. Still, word got back to Peggy that Heinz was potentially up for his grabs, and her new boss Ted Chaough (Kevin Rahm) pushed her to compete for the business, so Pardue could very well turn up again later this season.

For a lot of people, Tax Day isn’t a happy day. Maybe you found out you owe a lot of money to the IRS; maybe you just spent way too long waiting in line at the post office. The good news is that several companies go out of their way to offer great deals and freebies on April 15 to ease the sting of dealing with the IRS. Here are a few:

Freebie Finding Mom flags a few junk-food freebies. Cinnabon is bringing back its popular “Tax Day Bites” promotion, where it offers two free Cinnabon Bites from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Meanwhile, Great American Cookies is offering free birthday cake cookies all day, dubbing them “Cookie Currency Tax Rebates.” And Arby’s is offering free value-size orders of curly fries or small potato cakes all day on April 15 — just print out this coupon.

You can print it out or present it on a smartphone.

BeFrugal.com passes along a freebies that’s truly relevant to Tax Day: Up to 5 pounds of free shredding at Office Depot with a coupon. The deal is good through April 16 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. (Just be careful not to shred any important documents, as you’ll need to have them handy in case you get audited.) Another helpful coupon from Office Depot lets you get a free black-and-white copy of your tax return, up to 25 pages; the coupon is good through May 1.

Walking Dead's Mazzara Up for Shining Prequel

Former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara is in talks to write the prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which of course was based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.

Called The Overlook Hotel, the film is being developed at Warner Bros. and is not to be confused with King’s in-the-works sequel Doctor Sleep. Deadline has the report on Mazzara, who parted ways with AMC and The Walking Dead back in December for… some reason.

A prequel to The Shining. Hmm. Let’s let Jack Torrance comment on this one…

‘Mad Men’: Don Draper’s Death Obsession, Betty’s New Hair Color

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen the Season 6 premiere of AMC’s “Mad Men,” titled “The Doorway.”

Don Draper is not having an easy go of things thus far in “Mad Men” Season 6. The troubled anti-hero of the hit AMC series (Jon Hamm) is still reeling from the death of Lane Pryce (Jared Harris) and dealing with his own philandering demons.

“Mortality is something that is weighing on Don,” Hamm said.

LeMons New York Inspections: Many 2002s, Greatest Forced-Induction AMC Battle In History

By Murilee Martin

Here we are at the 24 Hours of LeMons’s first visit to Monticello Motor Club, where 120 or so teams and their alleged race cars ran the gauntlet of our grueling inspection regimen. We saw a lot of old friends today, some of whom had upgraded to cars that fit the LeMons Way of Life™ so perfectly that we didn’t even notice the usual swarms of BMW E30 3-series cars that always infest races in the LeMons Eastern Region.

Legend of LeMons Dave Morrow broke the monotony of a string of E30s by bringing this brown AMC Gremlin. Now, what’s the only thing that could make a Gremlin even better?

Yes, a supercharged GM 3800 V6 and T-5 manual transmission! We can’t find a single weak point in this extremely rational plan for racing success.

Just when we were thinking there’d be no way to top the supercharged Gremlin, this car rolled up. You’re looking at a brown AMC Hornet, a type of car that has an illustrious LeMons history. We were expecting to see a boring 304-cubic-inch V8 under the hood, or maybe even a somewhat wilder 343.

Nope, Rally Baby Racing (you may remember them as the perpetrators of the first and still only Mercedes-Benz R107 in LeMons) went ahead and added a cheap Chinese turbocharger to the AMC 258 six under the Hornet’s hood. Note the blow-through setup using an ammo box to surround the stock 2-barrel Carter carburetor. This setup should be both powerful and reliable on the race track.

At that point we figured, OK, we’ll have to create a special trophy for the winner of the Blown Kenoshawagen matchup. Then we realized that we were seeing more BMW 2002s than usual. Way more 2002s.

We saw a dead-stock 2002tii with Kugelfischer fuel-injection. We saw a 2002 with super-cheaty suspension and M43 swap. We saw everything between those extremes; in all, we saw six 2002s. You can get rusty examples of these cars for cheap, so we believed the budget stories of some of the 2002 teams and scoffed at some others. Perhaps we need a trophy …read more

A Frightening Way to Push Netflix Stock to New Highs

By Tim Beyers, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Television audiences can’t seem to get enough of bloody murder, and Netflix is more than happy to oblige. The streaming sensation releases all 13 episodes of new horror series Hemlock Grove on April 19, just three days before releasing first-quarter earnings.

Unlike political thriller House of Cards, which earns a remarkable nine out of 10 stars over more than 26,000 ratings at IMDB, Hemlock Grove is a genuine chiller in which a Rust Belt town is paralyzed by an unknown werewolf lurking among them:

Sources: Netflix, YouTube.

Can actor and horror director Eli Roth deliver as Kevin Spacey and David Fincher have? Netflix stock jumped nearly 10% in the week following the Feb. 1 debut of House of Cards, a high bar. In terms of ratings, the show also purportedly rivaled the HBO hit Girls during this debut week.

Roth, meanwhile, is known for playing the “Bear Jew” in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and for directing profitable torture flicks Hostel and Hostel II for Lions Gate Entertainment . Hemlock Grove doesn’t appear to be as harsh, but it’s a sure bet Roth’s werewolf will have a sharper and bloodier bite than the shirtless lycanthropes featured in the Twilight films.

Netflix is also airing Hemlock Grove at an interesting time. AMC Networks is coming off yet another record-setting season for apocalyptic drama The Walking Dead, which drew 12.4 million viewers during its Easter Sunday finale. Shares of AMC are up more than 27% year to date.

So get ready to get scared. Especially if you’re among the brave souls shorting Netflix stock right now.

These Stocks Are a Nightmare… for Short-Sellers

By Tim Beyers, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Pity the traders that short zombies. They’re likely to get eaten alive, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova in the following interview with the Fool’s Erin Miller.

And there are a growing number. Short interest in Netflix still stands at around 15%, while AMC Networks is now up to 1.6% of its shares sold short. This is what happens when you trade for a premium valuation.

Yet short-sellers of both names are wading into dangerous territory. AMC is rallying on the performance of its signature horror series, The Walking Dead, which attracted 12.4 million viewers on Sunday night. The show also once again won the prized 18-49 demographic.

Tim says the performance is reflective of a large and growing appetite among consumers for differentiated content that’s far afield of network television, and he expects years of outsize growth for the companies that fund it — AMC and Netflix, notably.

Get Tim’s full take in the video, and then leave a comment to let us know whether you think the time is ripe to be shorting AMC, Netflix, and their premium entertainment peers.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 4: Rick Struggles With Carl, More Zombie Threats And The Governor

By The Huffington Post News Editors

“The Walking Dead” Season 4 will be very different, according to series executive producer Robert Kirkman.

In an interview with IGN, Kirkman, who also writes the Image comic book series that the AMC show is based on, revealed some hints as to where Season 4 will find the zombie apocalypse survivors of “The Walking Dead.”

The group is still at the prison — albeit with new roommates, refugees from Woodbury — the Governor is still a nefarious threat out in the world and Michonne will still be kicking zombie butt with her sword, but Kirkman said he “can’t stress how different things are going to be.”

How ‘Mad Men’ Could Cover Events Of The Late 1960s

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Watching how “Mad Men” incorporates the real-life historical and cultural events of 1960s into its storylines has become a favorite past-time for fans of the hit AMC advertising drama. And as the show’s Season 6 timeline approaches the tumultuous and revolutionary late ’60s, the potential for “Mad Men” to intersect with the cultural touchstones of that era could be a fascinating aspect of the new season.

Although the precise starting point of the upcoming sixth season is a closely-held secret, we know that Season 5 left off in the spring of 1967 and it’s not unusual for “Mad Men” seasons to skip ahead 6 months or so from where they last left off. We’ve seen photographs that show Pete Campbell sporting mutton chops and and Harry Crane rocking a Beatles-esque shaggy haircut. Doing the math, it seems like “Mad Men” has the opportunity to tackle the heartbreaking assassinations, sweeping social change and music and media of 1968 and 1969, which still resonate to this day

So let’s take a totally speculative look at what real-life, late ’60s events “Mad Men” might tackle in Season 6. In the slideshow below, check out a timeline of historical and cultural events that could touch the new “Mad Men” season in some way, and our light-hearted predictions for how the show could work them into its storylines.
