Netflix Raised Another Show From the Dead

By Anders Bylund, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Netflix is getting pretty good at raising the dead. Just ask AMC Networks .

No, I’m not talking about AMC‘s hit zombie series, The Walking Dead. That title is nowhere near death, rising to break cable ratings records and lifting AMC shares a market-beating 30% over the last year. Critics and skeptics of newfangled distribution models would say that this is despite a distribution deal with Netflix for prior seasons. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, of course, says that his streaming service actually helps AMC find new fans for existing hit shows like The Walking Dead. I’d say that the numbers are on Hastings’ side. You be the judge.

The latest revival here is AMC‘s murder mystery show, The Killling, which was canceled last summer after an Emmy-nominated two-season run. It’s coming back again, and Netflix suddenly seems sure to have played a life-saving role in its revival.

News Corp. division Fox Television Studios, which produces the show while AMC manages distribution duties, wanted the darn thing to live. The producers talked to Netflix and DIRECTV about defibrillating the flatlined property.

DIRECTV has some experience with extending canceled shows, like when it added two more seasons to legal thriller Damages and three seasons to sports drama Friday Night Lights. So does Netflix, which will launch a fourth season of Fox sitcom Arrested Development this May — after a seven-year blackout. DIRECTV was reportedly very interested but didn’t bite in the end. Neither did Netflix, at least not directly. Instead, AMC reupped The Killing on its own. But Netflix must have had a finger in that life-saving pie.

Netflix just announced that it has landed exclusive rights to stream The Killing season 3 globally. The agreement with Fox shuts premium cable networks and other online subscription services such as Hulu or Redbox Instant out of the new season, and also brings the first two go-rounds to Netflix customers everywhere.

And the new season would probably not have happened without Netflix’s help.

“Our agreement with Netflix played an extremely significant part in the studio’s strategy that enabled us to bring The Killing back for a third season,” said Fox Television president David Madden. It’s safe to say that Netflix’s license payments pushed this show out of the casket.

The show was originally canceled due to lower viewership even as the material snagged a second round of major awards nominations. This deal will serve as a litmus test for the idea of Netflix distribution breathing new life into forgotten shows. AMC certainly has reason to believe in Netflix helping out, given the continued success of The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men after letting Netflix in on the fun.

And if both The Killing and the upcoming reboot of cult comedy Arrested Development both turn out to be hits, Netflix might just become the go-to destination for prematurely killed high-quality TV shows.

Netflix to Act as Exclusive Host for "The Killing"

By Tim Beyers, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Netflix fired another round in the content wars this morning, announcing an exclusive deal to bring season three of crime drama The Killing to members in the U.S. and Canada three months after the finale airs on AMC Networks .

Seasons one and two are already available for streaming in the U.S., Netflix said. The other 40 countries where the service exists will get access to new episodes “over the next few months,” and before the season three premiere airs, the company said.

AMC has brokered similar deals with Netflix for airing episodes of the zombie thriller The Walking Dead, and another crime drama, Breaking Bad. This time, News Corp. unit Fox Television, which co-produces The Killing, took the lead.

“Our agreement with Netflix played an extremely significant part in the studio’s strategy that enabled us to bring The Killing back for a third season,” Fox TV president David Madden said in a press release.

AMC Entertainment Inc. Reports a 10.8% Increase in Total Revenues and a 6.8% Increase in Attendance During CY2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– AMC Entertainment Inc. (AMC), one of the world’s leading theatrical exhibition companies, today reported unaudited results for the period ended December 31, 2012.

AMC‘s total revenues increased 10.8%, or $259 million, to $2.65 billion during the period December 30, 2011 through December 31, 2012 (“CY 2012″), compared to the fifty-two weeks ended December 29, 2011 (“CY 2011″). Admissions revenues increased 8.8%, or $144.7 million, to $1.8 billion in CY 2012 compared to CY 2011, primarily due to a 6.8% increase in attendance and a 1.9% increase in average ticket prices. Concessions revenues increased 12.3%, or $81.5 million, to $743 million in CY 2012, compared to CY 2011, due to the increase in attendance and a 5.3% increase in average concessions per patron.

“The entire industry celebrated its best year on record, and AMC celebrated the best year in its history in terms of total revenues,” said Gerry Lopez, AMC‘s CEO and president. “We put smiles on almost 200 million guests’ faces in 2012, a level of attendance we haven’t seen since fiscal 2007. In 2013 we intend to build on this success with additional investments in the modernization of our fleet and enhancement of our food and beverage offerings, to ensure our guests have reasons to return to AMC again and again.”

Net earnings for CY 2012 increased to $58.0 million from a net loss of ($242.5) million in CY 2011. The $300.5 million improvement in net earnings was primarily due to: operating improvements in admissions and concessions revenues due to the success of our food and beverage strategic initiatives, the timing of rewards accumulated and redeemed related to our guest frequency program AMC Stubs and the additional four days included in CY 2012 compared to CY 2011; non-operating improvements due to gains recorded in discontinued operations on the disposition of Canada and UK theatres; lower interest expense and investment losses; lower charges for financing costs; improvement in equity earnings from non-consolidated entities; lower impairment charges; and lower theatre closure expenses.

Adjusted EBITDA for CY 2012 increased to $438.2 million from $302.4 million for the year ended December 29, 2011. Detailed information regarding our revenues, costs and expenses attributable to our operations during CY 2012 and CY 2011 is provided in the tables accompanying this news release.

As of December 31, 2012, AMC owned, operated or held interests in 344 movie theatres with a total of 4,988 screens.

‘Walking Dead’ Creator Robert Kirkman Explains Why There Aren’t Any Animal Zombies (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Robert Kirkman, the creator of “The Walking Dead” comic books that were adapted into AMC‘s hit drama, stopped by “Conan” Thursday night, and answered a big question that might bother faithful fans of the series: why aren’t there any zombie animals on the TV show?

“The artist that draws the comic book loves drawing people, loves drawing zombies, does not enjoy drawing animals so much,” Kirkman replied.

So, there you have it: the lack of “Walking Dead” animal zombies is all illustrator’s Charlie Adlard’s fault.

Fairchild Semiconductor's BLDC/PMSM Motor Controller with Parallel Processing Cores Provides Simple

Fairchild Semiconductor’s BLDC/PMSM Motor Controller with Parallel Processing Cores Provides Simple Conversion of AC Motor Control Designs

Development Tool and Configurable Motor Control Libraries Minimize Design Resources for Faster Time-to-Market

SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Motor control application designers are now moving away from the traditional universal or AC motor design to a more sophisticated brushless DC (BLDC) motor or permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) design. However, choosing either of these methods can be challenging if the designer has limited access to advanced, complex motor control algorithms. This can lead to significant spending of research and development resources and longer design times.

FCM8531 – Rapid, Easy Conversion to PMSM/BLDC Motor Control (Photo: Business Wire)

To help designers with these cost and software burdens, Fairchild Semiconductor (NYS: FCS) developed the FCM8531 analog and digital integrated motor controller. The FCM8531 is a tailored configurable solution complete with user guides, reference designs, and evaluation boards that help motor control designers shorten time-to-market and minimize software design efforts.

Parallel Processors in a One-Chip Design

The FCM8531 is a 3-phase, hybrid BLDC/PMSM controller with two parallel processors – an advanced motor controller (AMC) and an embedded microcontroller (MCU) – that provides a complete, one-chip solution for complex motor control applications. The two core processors work independently but collaboratively to exchange data through an internal communications interface that helps to avoid system hang-ups and improves hardware protection. The FCM8531 minimizes the software burden with its integrated hardware controller and MCU interface management and achieves a fast load-response motor system with increased efficiency.

Tailored Design for Simplified Functionality

Capable of adapting to various motor designs, the AMC performs powerful algorithms such as sine wave control, field oriented control (FOC) and direct and quadrature (DQ) control, using Fairchild’s libraries that can be configured and stored to provide high performance motor control. The MCU interface, paired with the AMC, enables users to easily change the register values for different motor operation flows and characteristics. The device is ideally suited to solve start-up jerks in sensor-less fan applications, as well as acoustic noise and low efficiency issues in various fan and …read more

Petty Cash: The Greatest Road-Racing Jeep Cherokee in LeMons History

By Murilee Martin

We’ve discussed the AMC products that have raced in LeMons, but we haven’t discussed much about how Jeep—which was owned by AMC from 1970 through 1987—has performed in our race series. You’d think that the XJ Jeep Cherokee, with its solid front axle, high center of gravity, and 1964-era AMC pushrod six engine would be even slower than even the fattest of comfy luxury cars. In the case of Petty Cash Racing and their 1987 Cherokee, you’d be wrong—this Jeep is quick!

Team captain Matt Adair, a Seattle-based rock-crawling enthusiast, had to convince 24 Hours of LeMons Chief Perp Jay Lamm that he could build a RWD Cherokee that wouldn’t wind up on its roof the very first time it tried to turn at a race track. That task accomplished, the Cherokee showed up to the 2009 Arse Freeze-a-Palooza at Thunderhill Raceway in California. The team painted their car Petty Blue, but found that King Richard’s number 43 had already been taken by another team (43 and 69 are the car numbers most sought-after by LeMons racers) and had to go with number 430 for the Jeep.

The team’s drivers came from off-roading backgrounds and weren’t quite ready for the wild elevation changes and challenging turns at Thunderhill Raceway, but the truck handled and braked better than anyone expected, the 4.0 six suffered only a harmonic-balancer failure (a LeMons team that has only one major mechanical failure its first time out is doing very well), and finished a respectable 63rd out of 156 entries.

The team returned to California for the 2010 season and began to get noticed. First, a P45 (out of 147 entries) finish at the first-ever LeMons race at Sears Point, then a Class C win at the 2010 Arse Freeze at Buttonwillow.

Apparently emboldened by the success of Petty Cash, and surrounded by junkyards full of Jeep parts, Martooni Racing of Colorado decided they’d race a Cherokee as well. Sadly, they suffered apocalypse-grade mechanical problems and managed a mere 13 laps at the 2010 B.F.E. GP at High Plains Raceway in  their home state. Clearly, Petty Cash’s experience with thrashing rock-crawler Cherokees gave the team an edge.

The crucible of LeMons racing has done a good job of blasting holes in conventional wisdom surrounding allegedly bulletproof cars and engines, and it turns out that the AMC six isn’t quite as unkillable as self-proclaimed experts would have you believe. At the Sears Pointless 2011 race, the 4.0 a.k.a. 242-cubic-inch six in the Petty Cash Cherokee decided that it …read more
