'Glee' TV star Monteith found dead

‘Glee’ TV series star Cory Monteith was found dead in his hotel room in the western Canadian city of Vancouver on Saturday, local police reported.

No cause of death was given for the 31-year-old actor — known for his role as sensitive jock Finn Hudson in the hit series — but Acting Police Chief Doug LePard said that there appeared to be no foul play.

Shortly after noon Saturday (1900 GMT) police received a call from the local ambulance service “regarding a sudden death in a room” at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in downtown Vancouver, city police said in a statement.

“Police attended within minutes of the call and paramedics advised the man in the room was clearly deceased. “

“The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old actor Cory Monteith, who achieved great fame on the popular TV series Glee,” said LePard.

“As was the case in countless homes, I watched Glee regularly with my daughters, and I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death.”

The star of the Fox TV musical comedy-drama, who was dating co-star Lea Michele, checked into a rehabilitation center in April for substance abuse, his publicist said in a statement.

In a June 2011 interview with Parade magazine, the actor spoke openly about past struggles with drugs, including getting drunk and smoking pot by age 13.

By age 16 “I had a serious problem,” he told Parade, and checked into a rehab center at age 19. However ” I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing,” he said.

“I’m lucky on so many counts-I’m lucky to be alive,” he told Parade.

Monteith was born in Calgary, in Alberta province, but grew up in Victoria, on Canada’s west coast close to the US border and Vancouver, according to his IMDB profile.

Monteith checked into the hotel in July 6th and was due to check out on Saturday.

“There were others with Mr. Monteith in his room earlier last night, but video and … key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died,” the statement read.

“When he missed his check-out time, staff went to the room at noon and found his body.”

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, “but all indications are that there was no foul play.”

Monteith has also had minor roles in series such as “Smallville” and “Kyle XY”.

Microsoft's New Toy Is a Preemptive Attack on Apple

By Rick Munarriz, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

A lot has been said about Microsoft‘s Xbox One since it was introduced on Tuesday. However, here’s something that you probably haven’t heard: Xbox One is a preemptive strike on Apple .

Think about it. Apple is working on a smart television. Shortly before his death, Steve Jobs told his biographer that he had cracked the problem with smart TVs. CEO Tim Cook told NBC’s Brian Williams — on primetime television — that it’s an area of “intense interest” at Apple.

Let’s dream out loud. What would an Apple smart TV do?

Well, thanks to the popularity of Siri, it’s a safe bet that there would be some degree of voice recognition. Xbox One has that. “Watch TV” switches to live TV. “Watch AMC” switches the channel. “What’s on HBO?” pulls up the channel’s listings guide.

Apple’s device would also probably incorporate FaceTime video chat. Yes, Microsoft’s all over that. The Xbox One allows for Skype video chats — with multiple users at the same time.

Naturally, there would be some App Store integration with live content, but Xbox One is there already. You can pull up personalized fantasy stats during NBA and NFL games. You can be playing a Blu-ray disc and switch to a split screen to pull up Internet Explorer to figure out where you know that actress from through IMDB or pull up movie ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

App Store integration naturally means playing games on your TV, and Xbox One naturally will have Apple beat on that front.

The clincher here is that Microsoft already has tens of millions of active Xbox Live users. They all won’t hop on the Xbox One platform right away, but they will over time as prices get cheaper.

However, as expensive as the Xbox One will be, a full blown Apple HDTV will probably cost more than a Microsoft console with an existing flat screen. Now that we know that Microsoft will have its new toy out in time for this year’s holiday shopping season, it’s not as if Apple can get a head start here.

The more you think about it, the more you may start to realize that Apple may already be too late.

The only way Apple could realistically have a game-changer in an Xbox One world would be to revolutionize pay TV. Rolling out a piecemeal service in which consumers pay only for the channels that they watch — or the content that they watch — would more than justify Apple’s inevitably high price.

The problem, unfortunately, is that cable networks have every reason to be uncooperative here. They stand to lose big money if Apple disrupts cable and satellite television providers. If Apple hasn’t been able to get iRadio off the ground as negotiations with the music labels have been reportedly rough, how is Apple going to talk studios and content creators to disrupt a model that will save consumers money at their expense?

A Frightening Way to Push Netflix Stock to New Highs

By Tim Beyers, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Television audiences can’t seem to get enough of bloody murder, and Netflix is more than happy to oblige. The streaming sensation releases all 13 episodes of new horror series Hemlock Grove on April 19, just three days before releasing first-quarter earnings.

Unlike political thriller House of Cards, which earns a remarkable nine out of 10 stars over more than 26,000 ratings at IMDB, Hemlock Grove is a genuine chiller in which a Rust Belt town is paralyzed by an unknown werewolf lurking among them:

Sources: Netflix, YouTube.

Can actor and horror director Eli Roth deliver as Kevin Spacey and David Fincher have? Netflix stock jumped nearly 10% in the week following the Feb. 1 debut of House of Cards, a high bar. In terms of ratings, the show also purportedly rivaled the HBO hit Girls during this debut week.

Roth, meanwhile, is known for playing the “Bear Jew” in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and for directing profitable torture flicks Hostel and Hostel II for Lions Gate Entertainment . Hemlock Grove doesn’t appear to be as harsh, but it’s a sure bet Roth’s werewolf will have a sharper and bloodier bite than the shirtless lycanthropes featured in the Twilight films.

Netflix is also airing Hemlock Grove at an interesting time. AMC Networks is coming off yet another record-setting season for apocalyptic drama The Walking Dead, which drew 12.4 million viewers during its Easter Sunday finale. Shares of AMC are up more than 27% year to date.

So get ready to get scared. Especially if you’re among the brave souls shorting Netflix stock right now.

‘Worst’ Best Pictures, According To IMDB Rating (INFOGRAPHIC)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

best picture

In 1999, “Shakespeare in Love” picked up seven Oscars, beating out Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic “Saving Private Ryan” for Best Picture. It also earned a place in history as one of the worst Best Pictures of all time — according to user ratings on IMDB, where it holds a 7.2 out of 10.

There’s nothing wrong with a 7.2 rating, but most Best Picture nominees and winners have scored higher, especially since the 1990s when average winners’ ratings have consistently stayed over 8.

A Very Different Jimmy Olsen in Man of Steel?

Fans have been wondering if Daily Planet photographer and cub reporter Jimmy Olsen, a staple in the Superman universe, was going to be in Man of Steel. Now it appears she may be — yes, she.

“Rumor has it Jimmy Olsen is now Jenny Olsen. A quick search over at IMDB confirms that actress Rebecca Buller will be playing a character called Jenny Olsen,” according to io9 via (ComicBookMovie.com). “And there’s no mention of Jimmy. Sure, IMDB isn’t always the most reliable of websites, but it’s worth noting.”
