Do you remember your first time? The first game to make you take a worried glance at the shadows playing on the wall? To send a chill down your spine? I’m not talking about a fright, here, but a full-blown attack of the wiggins. Doom, maybe? Resident Evil? More recently, Dead Space or Slender? And as the goose bumps spread, did you duck behind the couch? Throw the cat at your console? Or did you play on, tight-chested, eyes stinging because you were too nervous to blink?
You only have to take into account Stephen King’s bank balance, or the fact that Freddy, Jason, and Chucky are household names to know that people like to play with fear. When the chance of coming out intact is high enough, we’ll leap from planes, swim with sharks, jump motorbikes between casino rooves, and sit transfixed in a theatre, eating popcorn on autopilot. In fact, the capacity of cinema to induce chills was experimented with as early as the late Nineteenth Century. The vampire classic Nosferatu predates Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Most sane people won’t permit themselves to be captured by terrorists or play Russian Roulette, but when it’s highly likely that frightening events can’t harm us, we’ll get in line. But why? Fear isn’t pleasant. So how can it be enjoyed?

Former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara is in talks to write the prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which of course was based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.
Called The Overlook Hotel, the film is being developed at Warner Bros. and is not to be confused with King’s in-the-works sequel Doctor Sleep. Deadline has the report on Mazzara, who parted ways with AMC and The Walking Dead back in December for… some reason.

Stephen King and his wife have agreed to pay $3 million to overhaul their century-old hometown library in Maine, as long as $6 million is raised from other sources.
Tabitha King, the author’s wife, serves on the building committee of the Bangor Public Library, which is planning a $9 million modernization. She’s also a former longtime board member.
One of the library’s most pressing needs is a new roof to protect its collection, described as the biggest in northern New England. The library’s copper roof was installed in 1912, when the library was built, and library officials say it’s beyond repair.
The Bangor Daily News, which first reported the Kings’ matching grant, says residents will vote in June whether to borrow $3 million for the roof repair.
Horror writer Stephen King is seeking to provoke a discussion on gun control and gun rights following the school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn.
The Maine native is a gun owner. He calls for three “reasonable measures” to curb gun violence in an essay titled “Guns,” released Friday as a Kindle single through Amazon.
King says he wants background checks on all gun sales and bans on high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons like the rifle used in the Newtown shooting, which killed 20 children and six school officials.
King describes a pattern of mass shootings in which anger and frustration give way to political rhetoric before discussions of gun control “disappear into the legislative swamp.” He says on his website: “If this helps provoke constructive debate, I’ve done my job.”
