Bombing shifts Mass. Senate race before primaries

Even before the explosions, polling suggested that Massachusetts voters weren’t excited about the looming special election to replace former U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

But in the days after bombs ripped through the Boston Marathon‘s crowded streets, politics were all but forgotten as authorities launched an unprecedented manhunt and a region grappled with terror. It didn’t matter that competitive primary contests on both sides were 15 days away; everything was put on hold.

“There are things that are more important than campaigning and that horrific event was clearly one of them,” said U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, who is competing against U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch for the Democratic nomination to replace Kerry, now the secretary of state.

After suspending political activities for roughly a week, the candidates have been forced to walk a delicate balance as they engage voters ahead of Tuesday’s Republican and Democratic primaries. They have largely avoided the site of the attack out of sensitivity for victims, but some have tweaked campaign advertising to address the bombing, highlighted their national security credentials and tried to use the sudden focus on terrorism to shift the direction of the race.

“It completely changed the landscape,” Lynch aide Scott Ferson said of the bombing.

Indeed, a campaign once dominated by debates about the environment, health care and women’s rights has become more focused on enemy combatants, Miranda rights and counterterrorism agencies. Some candidates welcomed the shift.

On the Democratic side, Lynch has seized on national security in recent days to attack Markey, thought to be the frontrunner. One of the most memorable moments in last week’s Democratic debate, just a week after the bombing, focused on support for federal security efforts

“Unlike my colleague Mr. Markey, I’ve actually voted for the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bills,” Lynch charged.

Markey responded: “He’s taking a page right out of the Karl Rove swift boat playbook, and it’s very sad, especially just one week after what just happened in Boston, Cambridge and Watertown.”

Through Tuesday’s primary election, Markey outspent Lynch on television advertising $1.7 million to $1.2 million, according to advertising figures obtained by The Associated Press. But only Lynch focused on the bombings in a television ad that blanketed the state last week, while Markey focused on traditional Democratic priorities such as women’s reproductive rights.

Marijuana Super PAC Started By Brothers To Push Weed Legalization

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Super PACs, independent-expenditure committees that can raise unlimited campaign contributions, conjure up images of political heavyweights like Karl Rove and the Koch brothers.

But two marijuana-growing brothers from Eugene, Ore., have decided to use the fundraising platform to fight to legalize weed. They’re accepting donations now at the Legalize Marijuana Super PAC.com.

Mark and Dennis Rogers submitted a super-PAC application to the Federal Election Commission on March 11 and were approved on March 25, Mark Rogers told The Huffington Post.

Harry Reid Is Done For

By Floyd Brown

Hennessey Venom GT

Republicans are excited about the prospect of controlling the Senate majority after the 2014 elections. In order to seize control, Republicans need to pick up six seats. This would have a huge impact on Obama’s ability to set the agenda and influence your life.

Democrats have the edge, but they must defend 20 seats, including seven seats in states that President Obama lost in 2012. Already, five Democratic incumbents have thrown in the towel, announcing plans to retire.

History is with the Republicans. During midterm elections, a president’s party often loses Senate seats. Here is a state-by-state roundup of Senate seats in play. We will update these races periodically.

Alaska

Democrats control this seat with freshman Senator Mark Begich, even though Obama lost Alaska in both 2008 and 2012. Begich only won this race by 1% of the vote because longtime Senator Ted Stevens was under the cloud of a Justice Department investigation.

Begich has worked hard, but anti-Obama sentiment is likely to be his undoing. Several strong candidates, including 2008 GOP Senate nominee Joe Miller, are considering the race.

Early prognosis: The Republicans pick up a seat (+1)

Arkansas

Barack Obama only received 36.88% of the vote in Arkansas in 2012. The President is very unpopular there, and he could bring down Democratic Senator Mark Pryor. Obamacare is also unpopular in Arkansas, and it will be used against Pryor (who voted for it.)

Republicans need to find a strong candidate to challenge Pryor. Last time Pryor ran, Republicans failed to field a candidate against him.

Rep. Tom Cotton, a rising conservative star, would be a formidable challenger to Pryor. Cotton is an Iraq War veteran and a favorite of Club for Growth and other conservative groups.

A poll released in mid-March showed Cotton leading Pryor, 43 percent to 35 percent. Cotton hasn’t decided what to do, but Republicans would be smart to urge him to run.

Early prognosis: Democrats hold Arkansas unless the GOP can produce a strong challenger (+0)

Iowa

Senator Tom Harkin, a fixture in Iowa politics for decades, is finally retiring. This gives Republicans a shot to win.

Even though Obama carried the state in 2012, Iowa remains very competitive for Republicans. Rep. Steve King has already thrown his hat in the ring, and he would be a strong contender. But don’t count on Republicans to pull together. King is one of the candidates D.C. GOP operative Karl Rove has targeted. Rove may spend big money against King, damaging his chances in the fall.

Early prognosis: Republican infighting keeps this seat Democrat (+0)

Louisiana

The Pelican State has been trending Republican, but Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu was re-elected with 52% of the vote in 2008. And as a long-term officeholder, she has to be considered the likely winner.

All of the Republican Party Congressmen from Louisiana will be competing for the GOP nomination to challenge Landrieu. Unfortunately for the Republicans, all of the challengers trail her in fundraising.

It will not be easy getting the better of Landrieu, but it is not impossible either. Unfortunately, the popular GOP Governor Bobby Jindal took a pass on this race.

Early prognosis: The Democrats will hold …read more

Hillary Clinton To Give First Paid Speech In April: Report

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will give her first paid speech next month, CNN reported Sunday.

According to the CNN report, Clinton will address the National Multi Housing Council in Dallas, Texas on April 24. While Clinton’s fee for the speech was not disclosed, early reports indicated that the former secretary of state will earn upwards of six figures per speaking engagement. According to Politico, she intends to give some of her earnings to charitable causes.

Clinton joined the Harry Walker Agency last month, adding her name to a roster of high-profile political figures including Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Howard Dean and Karl Rove. Her husband, former president Bill Clinton, is also represented by the agency. In 2011, he earned $13.4 million from speaking engagements.

Gay Marriage Support Poses Dilemma For Republican Party

On no other public policy issue have attitudes have changed as rapidly as on gay marriage, and Karl Rove, the man George W. Bush dubbed “the architect” of his reelection, epitomizes the shift in the Republican Party. Asked on ABC’s This Week if he could “imagine” a Republican presidential candidate unequivocally backing gay marriage, Rove replied, “I could.”

Karl Rove Mocks Sarah Palin Tenure As Governor

By The Huffington Post News Editors

WASHINGTON — GOP uberconsultant Karl Rove lashed out at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) on Sunday, mocking her decision to leave office early. Rove’s criticism was a response to comments Palin made at the Conservative Political Action Conference in which she suggested the poor performance of Rove-backed candidates in the 2012 elections indicates that Rove should get out of the political consulting business.

“If these experts who keep losing elections and keep getting rehired and getting millions — if they feel that strong about who gets to run in this party, then they should buck-up or stay in the truck,” Palin told CPAC Saturday, referring to Rove. “Buck up or run. The Architect can head on back to the great Lone Star State and put their name on some ballot –- though for their sakes, I hope they give themselves a discount on their consulting services.”

Rove pushed back in an interview with Fox on Sunday.

Caddell Unloads On ‘Racketeering’ GOP Consultants

By Breaking News

Caddell CPAC Caddell Unloads On Racketeering GOP Consultants

Pat Caddell, the Fox News Contributor and Democrat pollster who engineered Jimmy Carter’s 1976 Presidential victory, blew the lid off CPAC on Thursday with a blistering attack on “racketeering” Republican consultants who play wealthy donors like “marks.”

“I blame the donors who allow themselves to be played for marks. I blame the people in the grassroots for allowing themselves to be played for suckers….It’s time to stop being marks. It’s time to stop being suckers. It’s time for you people to get real,” he told the audience that included two top Republican consultants.

Caddell stole the show as a panelist in the breakout session titled “Should We Shoot All the Consultants Now?” He spoke with a fire and passion that electrified the room. When the session began the large room was half filled, but as word spread of the fireworks going on inside, the audience streamed in. By the end, it was standing room only.

Breitbart News spoke with Caddell prior to his talk, and he promised he would deliver a “brutal critique” of the Republican establishment and its political consulting class. He did not disappoint, pulling no punches with an unyielding evisceration of a small group of Republican consultants, the Romney campaign, the Republican National Committee, and Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS Super PAC.

“When you have the Chief of Staff of the Republican National Committee and the political director of the Romney campaign, and their two companies get $150 million at the end of the campaign for the ‘fantastic’ get-out-the-vote program…some of this borders on RICO [the 1970 Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act] violations,” Caddell told the crowd. “It’s all self dealing going on. I think it works on the RICO thing. They’re in the business of lining their pockets.”

Organizing For Action: Pro-Obama Group Positioned As Progressive Answer To Karl Rove

By The Huffington Post News Editors

(Repeats without changes to headline or text)
* Jon Carson is entrusted with Obama‘s grassroots machine
* Low-profile aide leads outside effort to pass Obama agenda
* Organizing for Action holds major D.C. meeting Wednesday
By Samuel P. Jacobs
NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters) – On Wednesday, some of President Barack Obama‘s most dedicated donors will fly to Washington and pony up $50,000 to attend a fundraiser for Organizing for Action, a progressive new kid on the block trying to counter the likes of Karl Rove and the Koch brothers.
Obama will give a speech to the group, an independent non-profit that is trying to use the data, know-how, and connections of the president’s campaign to improve the chances of passing new gun laws and immigration reform.
Their host will be Jon Carson, a soft-spoken political operative who trained as a civil engineer. As the group’s executive director, he has been given the task of reviving one of the most successful campaign machines in history, and providing a counterweight to the multimillion-dollar empires managed by Republican strategist Rove and conservative billionaire activists David and Charles Koch.
On the face of it, Carson, a former Peace Corps volunteer, seems an odd fit for the snarling world of deep-pocketed, partisan organizations that came into their own in the 2012 campaign, unbridled by a Supreme Court decision allowing unrestricted amounts of money to flood into U.S. politics.
A survey of colleagues and even political rivals tends to bring back one word for Carson: “nice,” not necessarily the most desirable trait in politics today.
Compared to other top campaign advisers, Carson, 37, has maintained a low profile throughout the last four years working at the White House as an environmental adviser and then as director of the Office for Public Engagement.
Through a spokeswoman, Carson declined a request for an interview. …read more

Getting Wise To Government Lies

By Michael Reagan

Obama Lies SC Getting Wise to Government Lies

Take President Obama and his Cabinet of Liars, please.

We all know what dirty tricks they played to try and stop the sequester’s automatic budget cuts from happening.

They spent weeks trying to frighten the America people into believing the country would collapse into chaos and suffering if the federal government’s sequester-forced spending cuts went into effect.

The campaigner-in-chief and his chorus of toadies did everything they could to make sure the puny spending cuts — which would have merely taken the federal budget back to its 2012 level — would cause the most pain to the most people.

Supposedly, the cuts were going to decimate the ranks of our local police forces and firefighters, throw hundreds of teachers into the streets, create long lines at airports, and maybe even leave the United States vulnerable to a military invasion by Greece.

Of course, most of Big Media played right along with Obama’s dirty political game. Like the dupes they are, they publicized every sequester scare-story like it was going to mean the end of America as we know it.

(Too bad the MSM don’t devote the same level of hysteria to covering some of our real problems, like Obama’s runaway federal spending and our unpayable future debt load.)

In case you haven’t noticed by now, Armageddon didn’t happen. The sequester came, and the sun is still coming up. Planes aren’t falling from the heavens. And I haven’t had to use my guns to defend my home against a single robber or terrorist.

Even the invertebrate Republicans in Congress haven’t caved to pressure from the special interests who oppose the sequester cuts, though perhaps they just need more time.

So far, Obama’s cross-country campaign of whoppers hasn’t worked on the American people, who don’t need Karl Rove to tell them that the “Big Bad Wolf” the president was yapping about every day wasn’t really at their doors.

Another hopeful sign that most Americans are not as naive or stupid as the Obama Gang thinks they are came this week when the citizens of Los Angeles went to the polls.

The mayoral primary was the top draw, but also on the ballot on Tuesday was one of California’s infamous ballot measures.

The official title was “Proposition A — Neighborhood Public Safety And Vital City Services Funding And Accountability Measure.” That’s government-speak for a half-cent sales tax hike.

If you’re not familiar with the fiscal condition of my home city of Los Angeles, it’s a depressing microcosm of the federal government and the state of California. Taxing too much and spending even more, the city already has a sales tax of 9 cents and a projected annual budget deficit of $216 million.

To get voters to OK the higher sales tax and add $200 million in annual revenue to City Hall’s $7.2 billion budget, LA’s politicians imitated the president’s tactics.

Just as Obama tried to scare the public into believing that the sequester would hurt our national security, the local pols here tried to scare voters into thinking public safety would be endangered without Proposition A.

Proposition A was …read more

Karl Rove To California Republicans: ‘Get Off Your Ass’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

In their latest effort to rebuild and rebrand, California Republicans turned this weekend to a famed “architect” of GOP victories: Karl Rove.

The top Republican strategist squeezed planning sessions, fundraising and a pep talk to delegates attending a luncheon into a several-hourslong stopover in Sacramento, where California Republicans are convening for their first formal gathering since suffering a shellacking at the ballot last year. He even offered some tough love.

“My message is this,” Rove told luncheon attendees. “Get off your ass.”

Karl Rove: California Republicans Need To ‘Get Up Off Of The Mat’

Referring to the state party’s deep losses in recent years, Rove said it needs to focus on larger themes of restoring jobs and reducing government spending.

Karl Rove Explains Conservative Victory Project: ‘My Posterior Was Shredded’ By Donors After Losses

By The Huffington Post News Editors

GOP strategist Karl Rove continued to defend his new elections project this week, explaining that the controversial plan to thwart Republican candidates who might be too extreme to win general elections was a response to intense donor pressure.

Speaking to the National Center for Policy Analysis, Rove said he’d decided to launch the Conservative Victory Project, an offshoot of his American Crossroads super PAC, after being confronted by disgruntled contributors unsatisfied with the group’s awful record in the 2012 elections.

“My posterior was shredded a little bit by donors wondering why we are writing checks for people who then turn around and run such lousy campaigns,” Rove said, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Why Republicans Lose

By David Lane

Republican Elephant 2 SC Why Republicans Lose

Newt Gingrich fired a cigar-shaped, self-propelled underwater projectile yesterday into the side of the USS Rove and his destroyer escorts.

Os Guinness’ insight is most helpful in the examination — and battle — for the soul of the Republican Party:

Put another way, if there are no universals or absolutes, then ‘normality’ is also relative and must be dictated by an arbitrary absolute created either by the stat or by the consensus of the population. This is true whether ‘normality’ refers to morality or sanity, badness or madness. One man’s ‘normality’ can become an implied or explicit judgment of another man’s ‘abnormality,’ whether mental or moral. Or, the assertion of one man’s ‘abnormality’ may be an assertion of freedom from the other man’s ‘normality.’ A man’s refusal to admit any degree of ‘abnormality’ in himself leads to the process of rationalization required to maintain his ‘normality’ at the expense of the other man’s ‘normality.’ This process tends to rationalize violence; for men justify their mistreatment of others by considering them as “abnormal” simply because others differ from them.

Last cycle, the GOP chieftains’ and lieutenants’ political killing of Todd Akin — yet funding $1M to liberal, homosexual activist candidate Richard Tisei — brings clarity to the philosophy of the Permanent Republican Majority, Karl Rove’s brainchild.

The amoral Permanent Republican Majority’s attempt to become the “normality” of the Republican Party — the concept of transmission being political triangulation which takes the place of principled conservative beliefs based upon conviction and moral absolutes — is troubling.

Christians participating in picking up a Republican House or Senate seat — ignoring one’s behavior, ethics, or integrity — is idolatry and worship of a false god and ultimately will collapse due to faulty construction to the foundation.

The Permanent Republican Majority’s “normality” (i.e. picking up Republican seats regardless of Biblical virtue, righteousness, or standard of decency) is the opposite of the ideology espoused by the wisest man — politically — who ever lived: “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”

The glory of a nation lies in its righteousness, not in its wealth or military might. If the key to maintaining sustainable freedom is righteousness — opposite of the credo and philosophy of the Permanent Republican Majority — Republicans and America are in a world of hurt.

Worse, Christian values — generally housed within the Republican Party — are being painted as “abnormal” in the attempt by the honchos of the Republican establishment to legitimize homosexual marriage within the Grand Old Party.

The USS Rove and its destroyer escorts’ postulation that their empty political philosophy is the gold standard for “being electable” — when in truth it’s a lust for power and money — challenges the notion that Biblical values, virtue, and Christian “normality” permit a democratic people to remain free.

Freedom always faces a fundamental moral challenge; virtue is a key component of freedom. Taking the Permanent Republican Majority’s route in the end will destroy the Republican Party initially, then America’s freedom.

Someone’s values are going …read more

David Axelrod And The Media’s Dying Credibility

By Breaking News

David Axelrod SC David Axelrod and the media’s dying credibility

Reading NBC News’s announcement Tuesday that it was hiring David Axelrod, a top adviser to Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, as a “senior political analyst,” I had a sinking feeling in my stomach: No wonder the American public increasingly mistrusts the news media. We are obliterating the line between the political players and the people who are supposed to act as commentators and referees.

NBC boasted in its news release about how “for nearly three decades Axelrod guided successful campaigns at every level on the ballot.” Once upon a time, that would have been a disqualification for a news organization. But now, NBC brags that Axelrod “will contribute frequently across all broadcasts and platforms.” And he won’t just be a “senior political analyst” for MSNBC, the broadcaster’s more ideological affiliate, but also for the NBC mothership.

Just a week ago, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow introduced Robert Gibbs, the former Obama White House spokesman and campaign operative, as a new contributor. Politico reported that Gibbs would also appear on NBC News.

This trend is hardly new. It’s commonplace these days for television news operations to hire former political advisers or campaign operatives as analysts. Fox has a stable of them, including former George W. Bush aides Karl Rove and Dana Perino, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and, until recently, that modern-day Edward R. Murrow, Sarah Palin. ABC News’s budding superstar is George Stephanopoulos, who has adapted so well to journalism that people forget he was once a top White House aide to President Bill Clinton.

The “Electability” Myth

By Steve Deace

Karl Rove SC The “Electability” Myth

Much has been said and written regarding Karl Rove and the Republican Party establishment’s latest plan to go harder after conservatives than they ever would Democrats. And I’ve had much to say about it myself.

But I’ve yet to see anyone question the premise of the phony argument Rove is hiding behind to justify his crusade to purge the GOP of anybody who won’t grovel at the feet of the ruling class (which is what Rove’s pro-establishment Jihad is really all about). See, in Rove’s world, if you actually have principles and want to defeat Democrats and not just negotiate the terms of liberty’s surrender, you’re a “nutcase.”

Rove claims he’s out to find “electable” candidates. Well, who isn’t? Of course, all of us want to win elections. The candidate you’re supporting doesn’t get to act on any of the principles he’s running on if he doesn’t win. Nothing in politics is more crushing than losing on election night when you’ve spent your time, talent, and treasure on behalf of a candidate who’s a champion of your principles. So for Rove and the establishment to claim they’re the only ones concerned about “electability” is patronizing at best and disingenuous at worst.

Besides, how do we define “electability?” Furthermore, how come we allow the very people who oppose our ideas and principles to define who is and who isn’t “electable?” Should the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox consult with the New York Yankees front office on personnel decisions? Maybe Auburn’s new football coach should call Alabama’s Nick Saban and get his take on whom to recruit?

“Electability” is a ruling class fallacy, both on the right and the left. It’s essentially the political equivalent to Jim Crow laws, aimed at stifling the potential for upward mobility of those in the grassroots who would challenge the ruling class’ status quo. Despite all their public hand-wringing and pandering, they don’t really reach out to minorities for all the same reasons they don’t really reach out to their own base. They are adherents to the “Golden Rule,” which is he who has the gold gets to make all the rules. They may speak of a “big tent”; but really, they crave the small tent where they remain in charge of their own little fiefdom, crumbling infrastructure and all. Ironically, it’s been we in the base they hate that has diversified the GOP. Where did Ted Cruz, Allen West, and Tim Scott (just to name a few) come from?

Rove and his cronies are like modern day “old money” blue-bloods, condescendingly peering down their noses at the emerging “new money” entrepreneurs who weren’t born into the aristocracy as they were. That’s why they go after us harder than they go after them. We are a threat to their power base in a way they aren’t because we actually want to topple a spoils system both sides of the ruling class are profiteering from. The only argument Rove and his Boss Tweed-wannabes have with the Left is …read more

Signs Of Life From America’s True Conservatives

By Breaking News

Boy Scouts of America SC Signs of Life from Americas True Conservatives

Two events this week should encourage and inform Americans who are determined to restore and preserve the constitutional liberty of their country. The national leadership of the Boy Scouts of America postponed the decision to admit practicing homosexuals into the ranks and leadership of the Scouting movement. They reacted to precursory tremors that signaled intense opposition from the organization’s grass-roots constituency and seriously foreshadowed its dissolution. Meanwhile, on the more explicitly political front, adverse reaction to Karl Rove’s move to wage open political warfare against the GOP’s grass-roots conservative base led him hastily to withdraw behind deceitful professions out of respect for their conservative views.

Along with the intense grass-roots opposition roused by Obama’s assault on the Second Amendment, these signs of courageous life from America’s rank-and-file conservatives convey critically important information about the depth and strength of support for America’s moral and political institutions. They put the lie to the elitist faction media’s determined effort to conceal the fact that those seeking to dissolve the fabric of America’s moral and political life are an elitist minority. They are out of touch with the large segment of Americans who believe in God’s moral authority and the provisions for individual rights and constitutional self-government that arise from it.

However, the BSA and Rove episodes also confirm the insidious, intractable nature of the forces that are now threatening to impose their regressive elitist views on people they now regard as recalcitrant subjects, rather than free citizens. The BSA’s policy prohibiting homosexuality in the Scouting movement enjoyed strong support from many of the people who participate in the movement, as well as many others who admired the organization’s integrity. It was more than holding its own against the gay lobby’s specious efforts to coerce people into accepting, as a good model for their children, behavior that good conscience requires them to condemn.

The sudden move to collapse the BSA’s thus far successful moral stand apparently came about because of pressure from large corporate donors. Having infiltrated the organization’s decision-making structure with their largesse, they threatened to withdraw their money unless the BSA caved to the pressure of the homosexual lobby. In effect, they weaponized their largess, turning it into an instrument of organizational destruction. They then used this weapon to terrorize the BSA’s decision makers. Either the BSA would abandon the moral identity that gave substance to the reputation it had built upon over more than a century of service to the nation’s moral strength, or the corporate money barons would withhold the financial fix that supports the organization’s materially high standard of living.

As usual, I’m struck by the way experience confirms the wisdom of Jesus Christ. He bluntly warned people of faith that “you cannot serve God and mammon.” First folks let themselves get hooked on a diet of food offered to the idols of material security, comfort and pleasure. Then they find that they have fallen prey to a Hobson’s choice that takes God’s …read more

Karl Rove SC Conservative Fury at Rove Erupts

Yow.

Talk about a political disaster.

The other day I closed a piece on Karl Rove by saying that in launching what he called the “Conservative Victory Project” Mr. Rove had made a big mistake.

A really big mistake.

The group, described here in the New York Times as “intended to counter other organizations that have helped defeat establishment Republican candidates over the last two election cycles,” has had a horrific reception among conservatives

Now?

Yesterday the big mistake became bigger. Much bigger. A thunderstorm became Katrina.

Yesterday, American Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio went on Washington, D.C. radio station WMAL’s Mornings on the Mall show hosted by Brian Wilson and Larry O’Connor.

And among other things casually dismissed Brent Bozell, the president of the Media Research Center as a “hater” — and worse.
