Inside Boehner’s Strategy To Slow Walk Immigration To The Finish Line

John Boehner SC Inside Boehners Strategy to Slow Walk Immigration to the Finish Line

House Republicans head home for the August break having done little to pass immigration reform, falling well short of Speaker John Boehner’s goal of voting on legislation before next week’s monthlong recess begins. But far from a failure of leadership, top House Republicans are casting the inaction as a tactical play designed to boost reform’s chances.

Keeping immigration on the back-burner helps avoid a recess filled with angry town-hall meetings reminiscent of the heated August 2009 protests where the backlash against health care reform coalesced. Doing nothing also starves Democrats of a target, Republicans argue.

“August was a central part of our discussions. People don’t want to go home and get screamed at,” a House GOP leadership aide said.

Instead, they’ll go home and talk about the need to stop government overreach, trying to draw voters’ attention back to the now largely dormant IRS controversy and the dismantling of Obamacare, a message that plays well with the Republican base.

But more than that, Republicans say, the delay in dealing with immigration helps them internally.

VW Launches Its Own Car-Net Mobile App on Certain 2014 Models

By Clifford Atiyeh

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo convertible

Car-Net, VW’s mobile app, will be available on certain 2014 models, including the Beetle.

After a short fling with OnStar that broke up in 2005, Volkswagen buyers have missed the magic satellite’s capability to unlock their cars or dial 911 immediately after a crash. Now that Hyundai offers its own telematics system (known as Blue Link), VW’s eye in the sky is back under a completely new name.

VW Car-Net delivers all the usual features we’ve come to expect from such systems, with several buttons on the overhead console that put you in contact with a call center any hour of the day—whether you’re looking for the closest place to get a cheeseburger or to report an actual emergency. A dedicated web site and iPhone app are also available for other features.

Among the main services:

  • Automatic Crash Notification: When the system detects an accident (airbag deployment or a rollover), a call automatically connects vehicle occupants to a VW Car-Net customer specialist. Information about the vehicle and its location are transmitted to the VW Car-Net Response Center. Appropriate emergency services can then be dispatched to the vehicle’s location.
  • Roadside Assistance: The car’s location and vehicle identification number (VIN) are sent to the call center, either by pressing a button or loading the app (Android phones will be supported later).
  • Agent Destination Assist: General Motors allows owners to download directions from OnStar even on vehicles without a navigation system, but VW requires your vehicle to be equipped with the optional navigation system for this feature to work.
  • Stolen Vehicle Assistance: In the same way that the Mercedes mbrace2 system tracked the Boston Marathon bombers in a stolen Benz, VW’s system will perform the same function when police contact the Car-Net system. However, Car-Net can’t slow the car or disable the engine as with OnStar and Hyundai Blue Link.
  • Last Parked Location: Sometimes parking garages can feel like entrapment; we’d have liked to use this app the last time we parked at Boston’s Logan Airport.
  • Remote Vehicle Status: The odometer, fuel gauge, and estimated range all can be displayed on the app. The app also can tell you if the doors, hood, trunk, sunroof or convertible top are open or closed, though only the doors can be unlocked remotely (and not locked as in other systems). Car-Net also offers text alerts when the car exceeds a preset speed limit or if it travels outside a certain area.

After a six-month free trial, Car-Net costs $17.99 per month or $199 for one year. Two-year ($378) and three-year ($540) contracts save some money in the long run and are competitive with other automakers. Only one subscription bundle is offered.

The service is standard on all 2014 Beetle, Eos, and CC models. On the 2014 Passat, Jetta, and Tiguan, Car-Net comes on every model except the base trims. It’s unavailable …read more

The Conspiracy Theory Of All Conspiracy Theories?

By Breaking News

Bible The Conspiracy Theory of all Conspiracy Theories?

Conspiracy theory: this term has become more widely used and understood recently as “information” about what really happened during certain events or at certain times in history that have come to light.
The funny thing seems to be that more often than not the “official story” or “talking points” that are put out by the news media, government spokesperson, and so on seem increasingly to be the real “conspiracy theories!” What are billed to us by these same talking heads as “conspiracy theorists”, ” tinfoil hats” and so on are often the ones who are dispensing the REAL FACTS. We know this is not the case 100% of the time but I think we can agree that, especially in recent history, this seems more frequently to be the case.
Let’s first take a look at two cases of this phenomenon straight out of today’s headlines to prove the point and then we will look at quite possibly “The greatest conspiracy theory ever”.
Case number 1.
THE BOSTON BOMBING

“Official Story”

Two lone “Muslim terrorists” placed a simple bomb made of a pressure cooker into a backpack and planted it at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Afterward they apparently robbed a 7-11 convenience store, got in a gun battle with police, the younger brother ran over the older brother in an attempt to escape, the younger brother then gets in a second gun battle with police where he was trapped inside of a boat and then in an apparent suicide attempt shoots himself in the throat!
WOW, that sounds like something straight out of Hollywood! As it turns out, it might be just that.

NY woman accused of posing as Marathon victim

Massachusetts authorities say a New York woman fraudulently collected nearly half a million dollars from the fund for Boston Marathon bombing victims.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley says 26-year-old Audrea Gause of Troy, N.Y., was arrested there Friday on a Massachusetts fugitive warrant charging her with larceny.

Coakley says Gause submitted a claim to the fund, including false medical records indicating she was treated at hospitals in Boston and in New York for a traumatic brain injury suffered in the bombings. She received a $480,000 check from the fund.

Coakley says authorities got a tip last week that Gause may not have been in Boston on the day of the marathon, and the hospitals later said they didn’t treat her.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Gause has an attorney.

Mass. college takes offense at Rolling Stone story

Add the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and its host community to those upset at Rolling Stone magazine’s cover story on the Boston Marathon bombing suspect.

Staff and students are upset at the magazine’s portrayal of the university as a “middling school” with “an utter lack of character.”

Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) was a student at UMass-Dartmouth.

Chancellor Divina Grossman tells The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/13SFKG3 ) in a statement that the magazine sensationalized the bad and disparaged the good. She says it’s obvious the writer did not spend much time in the area.

The article also says the town of Dartmouth is “a working-class community with virtually nothing to boast of except for a rather sad mall and a striking number of fast-food joints.”

Selectman John George Jr. called the description “ridiculous.”

Retailers vow not to sell Rolling Stone issue as critics blast decision to put accused Boston bomber on cover

At least five retailers with deep New England ties will not sell the Rolling Stone magazine featuring an unsmiling, scruffy Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover.

The picture, which accompanies a story titled “Jahar’s World,” shows the 19-year-old accused murderer with his long, curly hair tousled, reminiscent of the magazine’s iconic shots of rock ‘n’ roll royalty like The Doors’ Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan.

The issue, which hits newsstands Friday, depicts Tsarnaev above a boldface headline, “The Bomber.” The story, which features interviews from childhood friends, teachers and law enforcement agents, promises to reveal how a “popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster.”

Multiple retailers, including CVS and Walgreens, have decided not to carry the issue in their stores.

“CVS/pharmacy has decided not to sell the current issue of Rolling Stone featuring a cover photo of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect,” the Rhode Island-based pharmacy chain said in a statement. “As a company with deep roots in New England and a strong presence in Boston, we believe this is the right decision out of respect for the victims of the attack and their loved ones.”

Other retailers who have said they will not carry the issue include Walgreens, Rite Aid, Stop & Shop, the grocery chain the Roche Bros and Tedeschi Food Shops, a Massachusetts-based convenience store chain.

Other critics of the cover, including Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, struck fast, accusing the magazine of offering Tsarnaev “celebrity treatment” and calling the cover “ill-conceived, at best in a letter written by Menino to Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner.

“The survivors of the Boston attacks deserve Rolling Stone cover stories, though I no longer feel that Rolling Stone deserves them,” the letter concluded.

Rolling Stone, for its part, issued a statement Wednesday saying the story was part of its “long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful” coverage of the most important current political and cultural issues.

“The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens,” the statement said.

Rolling Stone did not address whether the photo was edited or filtered in any way in a brief statement offering condolences to bombing survivors and the loved ones of the dead.

In a blog posting late Tuesday, Rolling Stone detailed “five revelations” in the story by contributing editor Janet Reitman, including Tsarnaev’s increasing devotion to Islam while still in high school, as well as his older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s possible mental illness, which the boys’ mother decided would be better treated by Islam than by a psychiatrist.

“Around 2008, Jahar’s older brother Tamerlan confided to his mother that he felt like ‘two people’ were inside him,” the blog posting reads. “She confided this to a close friend who felt he might need a psychiatrist, but Zubeidat believed that religion would be the …read more

Weapons stockpile, pressure cooker found in Massachusetts man's home, police say

Police said they found a weapons stockpile, including a large pressure cooker and bomb-making materials inside a Massachusetts man’s home, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

According to the report, the FBI is looking into whether Daniel Morley, 27, of Topsfield, has any connection to the Boston Marathon bombers.

Police found the pressure cooker in a gym bag, along with ball bearings, wires and dismantled cellphone parts, MyFoxBoston.com reported. Police also discovered a shoe box with a dismembered bird inside.

Court documents said an assault rifle with hundreds of rounds of ammunition also was found.

The discovery was made after Morley was arrested for allegedly assaulting his mother and her boyfriend.

According to MyFoxBoston.com, the mother told police her son had the materials before the marathon bombings, but claims he bragged that his best friend used to box with one of the bombers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Morley reportedly has anti-government and anti-Semitic beliefs.

He was charged with two counts of assault and battery and making bomb threats. He is currently being held on $20,000 bail and is due back in court on Thursday.

Rolling Stone blasted for giving 'rock star' treatment to accused Boston bomber

Rolling Stone magazine is drawing fire for putting Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover, in a glam shot that critics say continues to blur the line between fame and infamy.

The picture, which accompanies a story titled “Jahar’s World,” shows the accused murderer with his long, curly hair tousled and the hint of a goatee, reminiscent of the magazine’s iconic shots of rock and roll royalty like The Doors’ Jim Morrison. The cover could send a dangerous message to Tsarnaev’s warped supporters, said one critic.

“If they want to become famous, kill somebody,” Northeastern University criminologist Jack Levin told MyFoxBoston.com.

The issue, which hits newsstands Friday, depicts an unsmiling Tsarnaev, 19, above a boldface headline, “The Bomber.” The story, which features interviews from childhood friends, teachers and law enforcement agents, promises to reveal how a “popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster.”

“She confided this to a close friend who felt he might need a psychiatrist, but Zubeidat believed that religion would be the cure for her son’s inner demons and growing mental instability, and pushed him deeper into Islam.”

Rolling Stone has not commented publicly on the decision to put Tsarnaev on the cover, which recently featured actor Johnny Depp and singers Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

Supporters of Tsarnaev, who believe in the face of overwhelming evidence that he’s innocent of the charges against him, appeared last week during his federal court appearance in Boston. Some wore T-shirts with phrases like “Free the Lion,” while others held “Free Jahar” signs outside Boston’s John Joseph Moakley federal courthouse on Wednesday.

“Give Dzhokhar back his life,” one protester reportedly said.

“If you really cared about the victims you would be more interested in the truth,” said another Tsarnaev supporter.

The Rolling Stone cover quickly drew a negative reaction on social media, as “Boycott Rolling Stone” quickly became a trending Twitter topic in Boston.

“Very rarely does something make me so mad I have a negative tweet, but #BoycottRollingStone,” one user posted early Wednesday. “Absolutely unacceptable.”

Many other Twitter users indicated they would never purchase another Rolling Stone magazine.

“Way to glorify a madman,” another posting read.

Federal authorities allege that the Tsarnaev brothers planted two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15. The explosions killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Four days later, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who survived a shootout with police during which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed, was captured following a daylong manhunt in the Boston suburb of Watertown.

Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty last week to 30 …read more

Column: Playing politics with crisis is inevitable

Hours after the Boston Marathon bombings, President Barack Obama gave the standard presidential line following a tragedy: “On days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats — we are Americans, united in concern for our fellow citizens.”

And, as usual, Republicans and Democrats alike quickly ignored his don’t-politicize-this plea.

This was inevitable.

Our leaders always play politics after catastrophe, whether made by man or Mother Nature. The Newtown shootings and Superstorm Sandy. The financial crisis and Hurricane Katrina. Our history is filled with moments when something big happens and elected officials maneuver quickly to take advantage of the changing public mindset — or at least the more intense media spotlight — on a specific issue.

Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress leveraged public angst over the Depression and a worldwide war in the 1930s to enact the New Deal, overhauling financial systems, funding public works projects and creating Social Security. Some three decades later, Lyndon B. Johnson and his Democrats seized on social unrest to pass the Great Society, anti-poverty and civil rights measures, education and transportation initiatives, Medicare and Medicaid.

During the 1980s, Ronald Reagan and his GOP used the moment of sky-high inflation and a growing Soviet threat to win support for boosting the military, trimming government and cutting taxes. And, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Republican George W. Bush rallied a fearful America behind expanding the government‘s terrorist-tracking powers, streamlining intelligence gathering and toppling Saddam Hussein.

Most recently, when he took office amid the worst economic conditions in a generation, Obama saw an opportunity to advance an audacious agenda that included ending the costly war in Iraq, improving crumbling transportation arteries and overhauling the health care system. As his first chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, was fond of saying back then: “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”

A gray area exists in all cases.

To some people, politicians who press for new legislation after a tragedy are seizing the perfect time to make needed changes, using typically fleeting we-are-one moments to reach consensus on an issue that long had been languishing behind more pressing priorities or struggling to get the necessary votes. To other people, these politicians are exploiting a tragedy in a blatant attempt to enact their pet, partisan policies.

Mother of bomb suspects insists sons are innocent

The angry and grieving mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects insists that her sons are innocent and that she’s no terrorist.

But Zubeidat Tsarnaeva is drawing increased attention after federal officials say Russian authorities intercepted her phone calls, including one in which she vaguely discussed jihad with her elder son. In another, she was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, U.S. officials said.

In photos of her as a younger woman, Tsarnaeva wears a low-cut blouse and has her hair teased like a 1980s rock star. After she arrived in the U.S. from Russia in 2002, she went to beauty school and did facials at a suburban day spa.

But in recent years, people noticed a change. She began wearing a hijab and cited conspiracy theories about 9/11 being a plot against Muslims.

Tsarnaeva insists there is no mystery and that she’s just someone who found a deeper spirituality. She fiercely defends her sons — Tamerlan, who was killed in a gunfight with police, and Dzhokhar, who was wounded and captured.

“It’s all lies and hypocrisy,” she told The Associated Press in Dagestan. “I’m sick and tired of all this nonsense that they make up about me and my children. People know me as a regular person, and I’ve never been mixed up in any criminal intentions, especially any linked to terrorism.”

At a news conference in Dagestan with her ex-husband Anzor Tsarnaev last week, Tsarnaeva appeared overwhelmed with grief one moment, defiant the next. “They already are talking about that we are terrorists, I am terrorist,” she said. “They already want me, him and all of us to look (like) terrorists.”

Amid the scrutiny, Tsarnaeva and Anzor say they have put off the idea of any trip to the U.S. to reclaim their elder son’s body or try to visit Dzhokhar in jail. Tsarnaev told the AP on Sunday he was too ill to travel to the U.S. Tsarnaeva faces a 2012 shoplifting charge in a Boston suburb, though it was unclear whether that was a deterrent.

Tsarnaeva arrived in the U.S. in 2002, settling in a working-class section of Cambridge, Mass. With four children, Anzor and Zubeidat qualified for food stamps and were on and off public assistance benefits for years. The large family squeezed itself into a third-floor apartment.

Massachusetts Senate Race Shifted By Boston Marathon Bombing

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Bombing shifts Mass. Senate race before primaries

Even before the explosions, polling suggested that Massachusetts voters weren’t excited about the looming special election to replace former U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

But in the days after bombs ripped through the Boston Marathon‘s crowded streets, politics were all but forgotten as authorities launched an unprecedented manhunt and a region grappled with terror. It didn’t matter that competitive primary contests on both sides were 15 days away; everything was put on hold.

“There are things that are more important than campaigning and that horrific event was clearly one of them,” said U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, who is competing against U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch for the Democratic nomination to replace Kerry, now the secretary of state.

After suspending political activities for roughly a week, the candidates have been forced to walk a delicate balance as they engage voters ahead of Tuesday’s Republican and Democratic primaries. They have largely avoided the site of the attack out of sensitivity for victims, but some have tweaked campaign advertising to address the bombing, highlighted their national security credentials and tried to use the sudden focus on terrorism to shift the direction of the race.

“It completely changed the landscape,” Lynch aide Scott Ferson said of the bombing.

Indeed, a campaign once dominated by debates about the environment, health care and women’s rights has become more focused on enemy combatants, Miranda rights and counterterrorism agencies. Some candidates welcomed the shift.

On the Democratic side, Lynch has seized on national security in recent days to attack Markey, thought to be the frontrunner. One of the most memorable moments in last week’s Democratic debate, just a week after the bombing, focused on support for federal security efforts

“Unlike my colleague Mr. Markey, I’ve actually voted for the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bills,” Lynch charged.

Markey responded: “He’s taking a page right out of the Karl Rove swift boat playbook, and it’s very sad, especially just one week after what just happened in Boston, Cambridge and Watertown.”

Through Tuesday’s primary election, Markey outspent Lynch on television advertising $1.7 million to $1.2 million, according to advertising figures obtained by The Associated Press. But only Lynch focused on the bombings in a television ad that blanketed the state last week, while Markey focused on traditional Democratic priorities such as women’s reproductive rights.

Michael McCaul: Boston Bombings Device ‘Leads Me To Believe’ There Was A Trainer Involved

By The Huffington Post News Editors

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said Sunday that the FBI is investigating in the United States and overseas to determine whether the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing received training that helped them carry out the attack.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is charged with joining with his older brother, Tamerlan, who’s now dead, in setting off the shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs. The bombs were triggered by a remote detonator of the kind used in remote-control toys, U.S. officials have said.

Former attorney general says Boston bombers must have had help in attack

A former U.S. attorney general says the two men police say are behind the deadly Boston Marathon bombings likely had help in the attack.

“I don’t believe they couldn’t have done what they did without technical assistance building the bomb and without…spiritual encouragement,” Michael Mukasey, the former U.S. attorney general under George W. Bush, told Fox News.

Mukasey added that he thinks the belief that the bombers only followed a rulebook from the Internet “doesn’t do it” for him.

Mukasey joins a growing number of officials who say Boston Marathon bombing suspects Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, and his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed in a shootout with police, likely had assistance in the bombing that killed three people and injured more than 200.

He also said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could possibly still be questioned for national intelligence purposes for information that could be kept separate from the criminal case.

Mukasey said if those interviews occurred, Tsarnaev wouldn’t have any right to have a lawyer present during the questioning. If Tsarneav filed a habeas corpus petition against such interviews, the challenge could reach the Supreme Court, Mukasey explained, but he thinks the ability to question Tsarnaev separately for intelligence purposes would be upheld.

“The only thing the Fifth Amendment protects you against is being a witness against yourself. That means in a criminal trial,” Mukasey said. “It doesn’t protect you against disclosing national intelligence information.”

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev stopped speaking to FBI interrogators after he was read his Miranda rights and got an attorney.

But Mukasey told Fox News authorities still have “ample evidence” of the attack without Tsarnaev’s statements, citing photographs of the bombing scene and Tsarnaev’s confession to a carjacking after the bombings.
