Stephen Colbert Grills Eliot Spitzer, Declares ‘This Ain’t Charlie Rose, Motherf**ker’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

It’s been a rough day on TV for former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

The candidate for New York City comptroller was first grilled by Jake Tapper for his “incredibly reckless and … very illegal” prostitution scandal. Then, he was asked by Stephen Colbert if forgiving voters signal the “slow decay of our moral values.”

As Spitzer laughed the question off, Colbert declared, “This ain’t Charlie Rose, motherf**ker!”

CAPScall of the Week: WPX Energy

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

For years, satirical late-night TV host Stephen Colbert has been running a series on his show called “Better Know a District,” which highlights one of the 435 U.S. congressional districts and its representative. While I am no Stephen Colbert, I am brutally inquisitive when it comes to the 5,000-plus listed companies on the U.S. stock exchanges.

That’s why I’ve made it a weekly tradition to examine one seldom-followed company within the Motley Fool CAPS database, and make a CAPScall of outperform or underperform on that company.

For this week’s round of “Better Know a Stock,” I’m going to take a closer look at WPX Energy .

What WPX Energy does
WPX Energy is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, with wells in the Bakken and Marcellus shales, as well as the Piceance, Powder River, and San Juan basins. It also holds a majority interest in Apco Oil & Gas, which operates out of Argentina and Colombia. WPX‘s 2012 end reserves totaled 4.65 trillion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent including its overseas assets, and claimed a mixture of about 75% gas and 25% liquids (oil and natural gas liquids).

In the fourth quarter, WPX reported 40% growth in oil production, 3% growth in natural gas liquid production, and 2% natural gas production growth during the quarter. However, WPX still lost $1.12 for the year as the company experienced a 22% decline in realized natural gas prices, and it wrote down $225 million in non-cash impairments because of the falling price of natural gas.

Whom it competes against
WPX has a triple threat it has to contend with: its competitors, the spot price for natural gas, and the rising costs of E&P.

As you might imagine, a finite amount of land available for exploration makes finding valuable natural gas and liquid assets quite the premium. According to my Foolish colleague Tyler Crowe, 12% of WPX’s assets are oil-based, of which many lie in the oil-rich Bakken Shale. This formation is known for its high-yielding oil reserves and is led by Continental Resources and EOG Resources . One smart tactic nearly all Bakken producers are using is shipping their oil production by rail to Louisiana terminals instead of selling it at the wellhead or in Cushing, Okla., because Brent prices at shipping terminals in Louisiana are paying out significantly more. In December, the North Dakota Pipeline Authority estimated that 64% of daily production was being shipped this way, which makes for plenty of extra profits for all involved — especially WPX, which saw oil production growth of 98% in the Bakken in the fourth quarter.

Realized natural gas prices can also be a friend or a foe, depending upon how you look at things. Chesapeake Energy , for example, leaned very heavily toward natural gas production as recently as early last year. However, weak natural gas prices necessitated a shift away from nat-gas drilling and production and toward Chesapeake’s more liquid-rich assets. …read more

Mark Sanford, Elizabeth Colbert Busch Gear Up For Campaign

By The Huffington Post News Editors

By Harriet McLeod
CHARLESTON, S.C., April 4 (Reuters) – Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch kicked off her general election campaign for South Carolina’s open congressional seat on Thursday, her sights set on beating former Governor Mark Sanford after he clinched the Republican nomination this week.
Colbert Busch, the sister of television comedian and political satirist Stephen Colbert, handily won last month’s Democratic primary. But she kept a low profile as 16 Republicans battled for a spot in the special election on May 7.
Sanford, 52, prevailed despite a 2009 scandal that had seemingly doomed his political career. As governor, he tried to hide an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman by falsely telling aides he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.
In an interview with WTMA radio after his primary runoff win on Tuesday, Sanford said his Democratic opponent for the seat he held for three terms before becoming governor was undefined on the issues.
Right now in essence, we’re running against Stephen Colbert. It’s going to be tough running against a comedian who is well liked and has ties to the Lowcountry, but ultimately issues define a race,” said Sanford, referring to the coastal region in South Carolina where the race is taking place.
Sanford’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Colbert Busch, 58, hit back with a statement detailing her work history, which included serving as director of sales and marketing for the Orient Overseas Container Line shipping company.
She is now on leave as business development director for the Clemson University Restoration Institute in North Charleston to make her first run for office.
“I was disappointed to hear about Mark’s comment,” she said. “He has known me and my work for years…If those successes can’t convince Mark that a woman is capable of leading, I don’t know what will.”
Stephen Colbert weighed in on the race Wednesday night on his Comedy Central show “The Colbert Report.” …read more

CAPScall of the Week: Splunk

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

While I am no Stephen Colbert, I am brutally inquisitive when it comes to the 5,000-plus listed companies on the U.S. stock exchanges.

For this week’s round of “Better Know a Stock,” I’m going to take a closer look at Splunk .

What Splunk does
Despite the odd name, Splunk is in the serious business of providing real-time software solutions that collect and index data from the virtual and IT cloud. Consider it the analytics hub of the cloud universe that helps companies better manage their networks.

In the fourth quarter, Splunk reported a 51% jump in revenue to $65.2 million as license revenue — which accounts for more than 70% of total revenue — rose 43%. A profit of $0.03 per share squeaked by Wall Street estimates that had only called for $0.02 in EPS. In addition to introducing a handful of new products, Splunk landed chemicals maker DuPont and security solutions provider Palo Alto Networks as its latest customers during the quarter. The deal with Palo Alto is particularly intriguing because Splunk’s analytics will show businesses where their biggest network risks are, further enhancing the customization that’s possible with Palo Alto‘s next-generation firewalls and allowing those businesses to maximize the protection of their networks.

The companies it competes against
The secret is out that businesses are willing to spend on big data center growth, so, as you might expect, competition within data analytics is fierce.

There are certain companies where I’d say Splunk presents a clear and concise advantage. BMC Software , for example, has fallen behind many of the mid-sized data analytics companies with regard to cloud-based analytics. BMC is aware of its need to make long-term transformative investments in its business to improve its analytics offerings, but rumors have been swirling for more than a week that it may instead be taken private

Splunk has also stolen a bit of the spotlight away from Oracle , which disappointed analysts with a revenue shortfall during its third-quarter announcement last month. Make no mistake about it: Oracle’s hardware issues continue to be a drag on its bottom line. But it also delivered a 2% decrease in revenue from software licenses and cloud subscriptions which would encompass data analytics. Oracle’s report does present some concern that enterprises are tapering their spending as the rollout of Obamacare and higher taxes take hold.

However, one bigger fish Splunk has yet to fry is IBM , which has used its hardware and a buyout of Netezza in 2010 to roll out one of the fastest-growing data analytics platforms in the world. …read more

Elizabeth Colbert Busch, Mark Sanford In Tight Race: Poll

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch is running just ahead of Republican former governor Mark Sanford in the race to represent South Carolina’s 1st District in Congress, according to an internal poll taken for the Colbert Busch campaign.

The poll, conducted by Lake Research Partners, finds Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, leading Sanford within the margin of error, 47 percent to 44 percent.

She had a larger, 9-point lead against Curtis Bostic, another possible Republican rival.

Mark Sanford, Curtis Bostic Square Off In South Carolina 1st District GOP Debate

By The Huffington Post News Editors

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The man running against former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford in a GOP runoff for an open congressional seat says Sanford is a compromised candidate who would offer Democrats a chance to win the May 7 special election.

Former Charleston County Council member Curtis Bostic said during a televised debate Thursday night that “a compromised candidate is not what we need” in the race against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Bush, the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert.

CAPScall of the Week: HCA Holdings

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

For years, satirical late-night TV host Stephen Colbert has been running a series on his show called “Better Know a District,” which highlights one of the 435 U.S. congressional districts and its representative. While I am no Stephen Colbert, I am brutally inquisitive when it comes to the 5,000-plus listed companies on the U.S. stock exchanges.

That’s why I’ve made it a weekly tradition to examine one seldom-followed company within the Motley Fool CAPS database, and make a CAPScall of outperform or underperform on that company.

For this week’s round of “Better Know a Stock,” I’m going to take a closer look at HCA Holdings .

What HCA Holdings does
HCA Holdings is a health-care services provider that runs hospital, surgery centers, diagnostic and imaging centers, radiation and oncology centers, and rehabilitation centers throughout the United States. HCA is the largest hospital operator in the world, with 162 hospitals in its portfolio as of Dec. 31, 2012.

For the fourth quarter, HCA reported an 8.5% increase in total revenue to $8.4 billion as same facility equivalent admissions jumped 5% and same facility emergency room visits bolted higher by 12.7%. Simply put, without the aid of additional facilities, patients are utilizing the hospital more, with a slight uptick of 0.5% in terms of same facility revenue per equivalent admission.

Whom it competes against
HCA has a myriad of enemies as a hospital operator, but none is more of a nuisance to its bottom line than doubtful accounts.

As a hospital operator, HCA can’t turn down treatment to anyone, however, with so many people still uninsured, HCA is forced to provision quite a bit of its annual revenue toward doubtful accounts that will go uncollected. According to its 2012 annual report, it provisioned $3.77 billion of its $36.8 billion in annual revenue, or 10.25%, for doubtful accounts. This fear of growing unpaid balances comes on top of increased hospital competition within the sector from the likes of Tenet Healthcare .

However, this is about to get turned upside down with the full implementation of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) in 2014. Passed in 2010, the ACA will mandate individuals to carry health insurance which should remove the majority of the burden of doubtful provisions from HCA‘s and Tenet’s balance sheets. As I’ve stated previously, no sector benefits more from the implementation of the HCA than hospital operators.

But, the ACA isn’t a welcome sight for others in the sector, including some insurers like WellPoint and home health-care providers like Amedisys and Gentiva Health Services . Shareholders in WellPoint are apprehensive of the bill because it caps the company’s premium profits and denies it the right to turn away patients with pre-existing conditions (similar, of course, to what a hospital operator like HCA deals with on a daily basis). For home health-care providers Amedisys and Gentiva, a combination of lower Medicare reimbursements coupled with more stringent ACA laws will make boosting …read more

CAPScall of the Week: Sanchez Energy

For this week’s round of “Better Know a Stock,” I’m going to take a closer look at Sanchez Energy .

What Sanchez Energy does
Sanchez Energy is an oil and gas exploration and production company. Its primary assets are liquid fuels (e.g., oil and liquid natural gas) in the Eagle Ford Shale region, where it holds approximately 95,000 acres. Sanchez also has undeveloped acreage interests in the Bakken Shale and Haynesville Shale. Sanchez currently has 34 wells in operation with an additional 17 in various stages of drilling or completion.

For 2012, Sanchez Energy reported 468.8 million barrels of oil equivalent production, or MBOE, which was a 170% improvement over its production in 2011. Although production volume surged, average production per well dipped as demand dropped and the company spent heavily in bringing 19 new wells online. Revenue for the year grew 197% to $43.2 million despite a dramatic drop in natural gas prices, although the company produced a loss of $0.56 for the year.

Whom it competes against
As you might imagine, competition is at a premium for acreage in the Eagle Ford Shale. Although natural gas drilling has abated with prices down in the doldrums, NGL and oil drilling remains as profitable as ever. EOG Resources is the king of the Eagle Ford region, having produced in excess of 29.5 million barrels of oil through the first 11 months of 2012. By comparison, Burlington Resources was a distant second at 16.1 million barrels of oil produced. Sanchez is a relative newcomer, so obtaining additional acreage has been difficult.

Unlike its Eagle Ford Shale acreage, which it nearly owns outright, many of its undeveloped acreage is shared interest. Sanchez has 1,500 net acres in the Haynesville Shale region of Louisiana, which it listed in its S-1 prospectus as operated by Chesapeake Energy and EnCana . Neither of these two natural gas behemoths have been looking to splurge recently with natural gas prices down, so this 1,500 acres, while small, could be a troublesome asset to sell if Sanchez has no plans to utilize it.

In the Palmetto region, which is located in the Eagle Ford Shale, it does share a 50/50 working interest with Marathon Oil . With the Palmetto area more rich in volatile oils, it’s not devastating for a company like Sanchez to share its working interests here. The key is that its Maverick region is ripe with black oil, and it …read more

CAPScall of the Week: Clovis Oncology

By Sean Williams, The Motley Fool

For years, satirical late-night TV host Stephen Colbert has been running a series on his show called “Better Know a District,” which highlights one of the 435 U.S. congressional districts and its representative. While I am no Stephen Colbert, I am brutally inquisitive when it comes to the 5,000-plus listed companies on the U.S. stock exchanges.

That’s why I’ve made it a weekly tradition to examine one seldom-followed company within the Motley Fool CAPS database, and make a CAPScall of outperform or underperform on that company.

For this week’s round of “Better Know a Stock,” I’m going to take a closer look at Clovis Oncology .

What Clovis Oncology does
As Clovis’ name would imply, there’s no smoke-and-mirror tricks here regarding what it does: It’s a biotechnology company engaged in researching anti-cancer compounds. It has three compounds currently in its pipeline: CO-1686 — which is an oral phase I/II epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, inhibitor for the treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer, or NSCLC — that it’s partnered with Roche in developing; Rucaparib — which is a poly ADP-ribose polymerase, or PARP, inhibitor in phase I/II trials for ovarian and breast cancer; and a preclinical cKIT inhibitor for gastrointestinal stromal tumors that it’s partnered with Array BioPharma on.

In Clovis’ most recently ended fourth quarter, it reported a loss of $21.1 million compared to a loss of just $14.9 million in the year-ago period as its total cash level rose modestly to $144.1 million from the $140.2 million it ended with in 2011.

Whom it competes against
This is one of those cases where I say there are a ton of competitors in NSCLC, but few that target the T790M mutation that CO-1686 is being developed to treat. In fact, there are no FDA-approved treatments to specifically target the mutation at the moment. However, that may change very shortly as Boehringer Ingelheim does have an experimental drug known as Afatinib under an accelerated FDA review for EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. With Clovis still early in its development, Afatinib could have a chance to clean up before CO-1686 even gets to late-stage enrollment.

Something similar can be said for Clovis’ competition in breast cancer with regard to PARP inhibitors. However, unlike with NSCLC, advancements in PARP inhibitors are still very slow, so a drug like Rucaparib that is still being studied in phase 1 trials has just as much chance of success as AbbVie‘s Veliparib, which is being tested as a combination PARP inhibiting therapy in phase 1/2 trials.

The call
After carefully reviewing Clovis Oncology‘s prospects, I’ve decided to place a CAPScall of underperform on the company for a number of reasons.

The primary reason for my distaste of this recent run relates to its complete failure with CO-101 for metastatic pancreatic cancer. The results from the phase 1/2 trial were noted by CEO Patrick Mahaffy to be “even more ambiguous than we could have imagined,” as CO-101 was …read more

NY Cardinal Dolan a 'happy warrior' for church

Challenging a White House mandate for birth control coverage in health insurance, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan sounded like a general rallying the troops.

“The only thing we’re certainly not prepared to do is give in,” Dolan said at a national bishops’ meeting last November. “We’re not violating our consciences.”

Weeks earlier, he had appeared in a far less formal setting, at New York’s Fordham University with comedian Stephen Colbert. From the 3,000 cheering audience members, one student considering the priesthood asked whether he should date. Dolan said it could help decide the right path, then quipped, “By the way, let me give you the phone numbers of my nieces.”

___

EDITOR’S NOTE: As the Roman Catholic Church prepares to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, The Associated Press is profiling key cardinals seen as “papabili” — contenders to the throne. In the secretive world of the Vatican, there is no way to know who is in the running, and history has yielded plenty of surprises. But these are the names that have come up time and again in speculation. Today: Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

___

Catholic News Service calls him a happy warrior for evangelization. Kean University historian Christopher Bellitto calls him the bear-hug bishop. Dolan, 63, is an upbeat, affable defender of Catholic orthodoxy, and a well-known religious figure in the United States.

He holds a job Pope John Paul II once called “archbishop of the capital of the world.” His colleagues broke with protocol in 2010 and made him president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, instead of elevating the sitting vice president as expected. And during the 2012 presidential election, Republicans and Democrats competed over which national political convention the cardinal would bless. He did both.

But scholars question whether his charisma and experience are enough for a real shot at succeeding Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. The thinking ahead of the conclave is Dolan’s chances are slim.

“It’s not a personal attack on his qualities as a cardinal or individual,” said Monsignor Michael Fahey, a scholar at Fairfield University in Conn. “Cardinal Dolan has a knack for getting people to feel relaxed and to laugh and to expect the unexpected, but that is not what the church needs right now.”

Colbert Out Of Character: Comedian Drops Act To Promote Sister For Congress (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Stephen Colbert has been hitting the campaign trail this week for his sister, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, who is running for South Carolina‘s 1st Congressional District. At a bowling alley stump speech this weekend, the comedian dropped character to give his heartfelt endorsement to Colbert Busch, whom he affectionately called “Lulu.” The glimpse into the real Stephen Colbert (as opposed to “Stephen Colbert“) was a rare treat for the audience, and made its way to the Internet thanks to a YouTube user who attended.

Colbert began the speech by telling the audience, “Some of you may know that I have a television show and not only am I Stephen Colbert, but I play one on TV.” Amid laughter, he became serious and said he had “never actually supported any candidate before.”

“Now obviously Lulu is my sister,” he said. “And if I did not support her, my mother would be very mad.”
