Ethnic Radio Programming Targets New Chinese Immigrants

By David Yin, Forbes Staff

The U.S. Census Bureau recently announced that Asians were the country’s fastest-growing ethnic group in 2012. Their population jumped 2.9%, or 530,000 to 18.9 million, with 60% of this increase coming from international migration. As many migrants have limited English proficiency, their growth in numbers has led to opportunities for media companies which serve ethnic minorities. In April Magic Broadcasting agreed to sell KDAY, a Los Angeles-based hip hop radio station that had helped bring the West Coast rap scene into prominence, to a group of Chinese investors for $19.5 million. If the deal is approved by the Federal Communications Commission (), KDAY is likely to switch from playing Jay-Z and Kanye West to a Chinese language format. I spoke to Arthur Liu, founder and chief executive of Multicultural Radio Broadcasting, to discuss his broadcasting niche and his views on the future of the industry. (Liu is not involved in the KDAY deal.) The son of a journalist, Liu was born in Shandong, China and later moved to Taiwan and the U.S.. He started the company in 1982 and launched his first radio station (WNWK, 105.9) in New York in 1992. Six years later, a change in FCC regulations allowed him to sell the station, along with another smaller station, to Heftel Broadcasting, then the nation’s largest Spanish language radio group, for $135 million. Given that Liu only paid $5 million for the station, he used most of the proceeds to buy ten more radio stations on the West Coast. Today, Liu splits his time between New York and California, managing a nationwide network of 40 radio stations and serving ethnic minorities in ten major markets. Liu says his business builds on the diversity of race, culture and language in the country. His radios stations mirror the ethnic makeup of the population, broadcasting daily in Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian and several other languages. He specifically targets the Asian-American market because the audience in its different subcultures cannot be reached so broadly, unlike the Spanish language market. Before entering a radio market, Liu looks carefully at its geographic location and the size of its audience. He adds that the company has no Vietnamese language programing in New York but several Vietnamese language stations in southern California. To cater to the large Spanish-speaking population, Liu also leases airtime in 12 stations to Spanish language producers, who design their own content and seek their own advertising streams. While Liu says his radio business is “doing very well,” he admits that it has been greatly affected by the rise of new forms of media. He says that the company is adopting new broadcasting trends such as mobile applications and internet streaming. He cites the company’s Radio Chinese Plus, a radio application for smartphones that currently has 680,000 active users. Liu is also expanding his cable business, which complements his radio business and broadens his reach. His radio and cable branches are housed in the same buildings – in New York and Los Angeles – and …read more

China Threat? Former French Diplomat Says No

By Heng Shao, Forbes Staff

Is China a threat? Not by nature, but perhaps by reaction, said former French diplomat Lionel Vairon at the launch of the English version of his book, “China Threat?” last Thursday at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He believes that the fear of a rising China results from the inability of Western countries to recognize China’s legitimate national interests. China will become problematic only if dominant powers attempt to contain it and deny its place in the international society. …read more

Bannockburn anniversary ban for skean dhu blades

By hnn

SKEAN dhus, a blade traditionally worn with Highland dress, have been banned by organisers of the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

The celebration takes place next year and will be overseen by the National Trust for Scotland, who have told attendees that they will not be permitted to bring the blades to the event.

Skean dhus are exempt from laws surrounding the carrying of weapons in Scotland, but organisers claim carrying the traditional dagger in a public place constitutes an offence.

The festival, taking place in June next year, is expected to attract around 45,000 visitors. It will mark Robert the Bruce’s victory over the English in 1314….

Poll: Most Latino Voters Oppose Immigration Reform Without A Path To Citizenship

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Latino voters disapprove of potential House GOP plans to address immigration issues without creating a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, according to a Latino Decisions poll released Wednesday.

The survey, from Latino Decisions and the advocacy group America’s Voice, found stronger support for the immigration reform principles put forward by the bipartisan “gang of eight” in the Senate and Democrats in the House: a path to citizenship along with enhanced border security, employment verification and requirements that undocumented immigrants study English, pass a background check and pay a fine before becoming legal residents. Seventy-seven percent of Latino voters supported such a plan.

About two-thirds of Latino voters also said they approve of the Democratic Party’s insistence that reform include a path to citizenship.

A Nice, New Buick Aims For Middle Of The Road

Any time someone describes some portion of a car or a driving experience as being “nice,” I want to either A) throttle them or B) run as fast and as far as I can from that vehicle. “Nice” is among the most insidious words in the English language – at best it’s vague, and at worst, it conveys the exact opposite of its literal meaning. Yet it seems to be used with damnable frequency when it comes to verbally illustrating vehicles. “It looks really nice,” or “These seats feel nice,” or, heaven forefend, “It’s got a nice ride,” are all windy signifiers of absolutely nothing resembling a concrete opinion. “Nice” is the adjectival equivalent of meekly smiling and nodding your head.

Of course, I’m as guilty as the next person of having thrown English’s least powerful descriptor around. There’s even a chance that, rant aside, you’ll catch me making nice in reviews to come. That’s fine, but you should know that when you stumble upon such usage, past or future, that you’ve found a sentence in which I’m simply applying a bare minimum of effort to the task.

Right, let’s talk about the newly updated 2014 Buick LaCrosse.

Purple Taxis – Symbol Of Change

By Hilary Kramer, Contributor

Visitors to London and the people who live and work there are very familiar with the traditional and distinctively English black cabs. In London, these zippy taxis –combining old world charm with comfort, spaciousness and unique charm are a fixture, as much as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. These black cabs and their polite and knowledge drivers are famous for getting the job done. Hailing one is easy, they are everywhere. These days, we are seeing images of these black cabs in  the media as  London is once again at the center of the global media’s attention given the birth of the future British monarch. …read more

Earthbound's Ten Most Memorable Moments

On April 17 2013, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced via a Nintendo Direct video conference that Earthbound is coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. But when he said “later this year,” we didn’t think he’d mean just three months later. Not only are we excited for other players to get a chance to check out this rare gem, we’re jumping back into a classic that some of us have invested dozens upon dozens of hours into.

But why is the English-language Virtual Console release of Earthbound such a big screaming deal? Is the game really the borderline spiritual journey that its fans claim it to be, or will thousands of  new players do away with their Earthbound chastity only to find the experience doesn’t meet the hype?

Black Culture Too Often Controlled By Black Children

By Derrick Hollenbeck

rachel Black culture too often controlled by Black children

When she was testifying during the George Zimmerman trial, Rachel Jeantel said many things; but what is perhaps most profound in its meaning was her statement that “You old school.”

This grammatical train wreck goes a long way toward explaining why blacks cannot make any progress in our society, despite being handed everything they ask for (and lots of things even they wouldn’t have the nerve to ask for.) It shines a light on the fact that black children dictate what black culture is. They determine how to speak, dress, and sing (which of course stays in vogue for about four years or so, then fades away only to be reconstructed by the next bunch of black children who are today little more than 12 years old.)

This never-ending stream of change gives liberals an opportunity to pat blacks on the back and on the head. They lie to black kids and praise twisted street language as “Ebonics” or “Black English,” proclaiming both to be interchangeable with actual English.  That understandable communication is the essential element of making a person employable is glossed over because turning such language into a semblance of English – the kind that employers have this “strange” attachment to – is just too hard and opens those attempting such reform to charges of racism.

How long can those who piously beat their breast and proclaim their ardent concern for the welfare of black Americans keep lying to them? When does the child-like black culture give way to an adult goal-oriented black culture?  When will the cruel “soft” racism of paternalism finally end and blacks be held to the adult standards common sense tells us are necessary for black adults to take control of themselves and make a genuine contribution to America?

When do we stop overlooking the overwhelming tendency of black males to walk away from the children they make to prove they are men? When do we stop going along with 33% dropout rates among black high school kids? When do we stop making excuses for the incredibly high black crime rate – even black on black crime rate?

As long as we paternally assign value to the “New school” black culture, accepting Black Children’s Culture as Black Culture, we will never solve any of these problems.

Report: Lotus to move immediately forward with new variants rather than new models

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

It took 1.5 years, but a DRB-Hicom managing director told Malaysia’s Business Times that the company has “cleaned up” the situation at Lotus from its finances to its marketing and image. The clean-up job we’re most interested in, the product portfolio, will be demonstrated by financial investment in a three-year program of “variants based on existing products – variants with improved technology, improved performance.”

You’ll notice mention of the word “variants” three times but no mention of the phrase “new models.” We knew that with the death of the five-new-model turnaround plan dreamed up by ex-Lotus CEO Dany Bahar DRB-Hicom said there’d only be three distinct lines – which is the current number – but during Lotus’ trouble-plagued 2012 it sold just 80 cars all year, and for a tense spell it really wasn’t clear if DRB-Hicom would commit to even keeping Lotus alive, much less investing in it.

It’s not clear how much is being put into in the three-year program of offshoot models like the 345-horsepower Exige S Roadster (pictured), but it might be fair to say this is where Lotus’ revival really begins, and does so with baby steps. Autocar reports that DRB-Hicom has already put 100 million pounds into the English carmaker, and as its issues were worked through Lotus has sold almost as many cars in the first five months of this year as it did all of last. That has not only convinced the Malaysian minders to throw more money its way, but the UK’s business secretary has also approved a 10-million-pound investment into Lotus through the Regional Growth Facility program.

However, with the Evora and Elise the only other models to earn the “Definites” tag this could put us another three years away from the return of the Esprit. Last we heard it was ready save for a management sign-off, but it goes into reverse – again – to an underground garage called “nebulosity.”

Lotus to move immediately forward with new variants rather than new models originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Jul 2013 16:33:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

OCR makes short work of digitizing your docs

The file cabinet looms large in the office, yet it guards its secrets jealously…even from you. It’s time to convert those papers to space-saving, easy-to-find digital documents. For that, you need a scanner to turn them into digital images and an Optical Character Recognition program to convert those images into editable and searchable documents. I took four of the latest OCR programs and a free online OCR service for a test spin. All of them work to varying degrees.

To test the programs, I ran 22 varied and not particularly clean scans of documents—including one hand-written note—through four OCR programs and one free service. I looked for accuracy in text recognition, image extraction, and the ability to recreate them in a Word document. In addition, I processed 264 separate scans from a yearbook for output as a searchable PDF.

Free-OCR

You don’t actually need to install OCR software if you need to convert only a couple of small documents. You can use a free service such as Free-OCR (also known as Free-OCR.com) and upload a scan of your document. File size is limited to 2MB and 5000 pixels in any direction, which is about 150 dpi for a standard page. The OCR engine handles 29 languages, including English.

Free-OCR makes you jump through a CAPTCHA hoop, but does it apologetically.

Although you don’t have to register or even fork over your email address, the Free-OCR site does make you fill in one of those annoying CAPTCHAs. (Thanks, Web bad guys, for making everyone’s life more difficult.) However, those CAPTCHAs serve to remind one just how difficult OCR can be. If humans, with our incredible heuristic abilities, occasionally have problems with these, just think how poor straight-line software perusing a stream of bits must feel.

Sunken WWI U-Boats a bonanza for historians

By hnn

British archaeologists recently discovered more than 40 German U-boats sunk during World War I off the coast of England. Now they are in a race against time to learn the secrets hidden in their watery graves.

On the old game show “What’s My Line?” Briton Mark Dunkley might have been described with the following words: “He does what many adventurers around the world can only dream of doing.”

Dunkley is an underwater archeologist who dives for lost treasures. His most recent discoveries were anything if not eerie.

On the seafloor along the southern and eastern coasts of the UK, Dunkley and three other divers have found one of the largest graveyards in the world’s oceans, with 41 German and three English submarines from World War I. Most of the submarines sank with their crews still on board, causing many sailors to die in horrific ways, either by drowning or suffocating in the cramped and airtight submarines….

Scotland coining in it out on the treasure trail

By hnn

A MEDIEVAL heraldic badge worn by a diplomat negotiating between Scottish and English forces during the reign of King Edward I was among the treasure trove artefacts unearthed in Scotland in the past year.

A hoard of coins used to bribe hostile clans after the Romans retreated from Scotland were also handed to the Crown.

There were 316 cases of historical items being handed over to the Treasure Trove Unit in 2012-13, up from 152 the previous year. The unit aims to ensure significant or important finds are kept for the nation and go on show in museums….
