This film, from South African director Seagram Pearce, has a similar but much more law-abiding plot.
An unnamed racer arrives a track, gets his safety gear on, and zips around at the wheel of a KTM X-Bow. All the while, a beautiful woman watches on, with the driver finishing the film alongside his leading lady.

Microsoft is expanding the push for so-called “white spaces” broadband to South Africa, where it will help to deploy the technology in a pilot project serving five primary and secondary schools.
The pilot project is aimed at getting schools in rural parts of the country’s northeastern Limpopo province connected to the Internet. If successful, it could give South Africa a tool that would help the country reach its goal of affordable broadband for 80 percent of the population by 2020.
White spaces are unused frequencies in TV bands, which Microsoft, Google and others advocate making available on an unlicensed basis for wireless broadband. Advocates won approval for that use in 2008 in the U.S., which was the first country to authorize white spaces. To ensure the new networks use only the slivers of spectrum in between licensed uses, devices need to have a database of licensed users and sensors to detect other activity in the band.
Commercial white-spaces networks are just starting to get off the ground in the U.S., but Microsoft has talked with governments in at least 50 other countries about the possibility of making such frequencies available, said Paul Garnett, Microsoft’s director for technology policy.

After living in New Zealand for six years, a South African chef may be forced to leave the country because of his weight.
New Zealand authorities have told Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 286 pounds, that he may be deported because he did not have “an acceptable standard of health,” the BBC reports. Buitenhuis weighed roughly 65 pounds more when he first moved to the country, but this is the first time he has had any trouble renewing his annual work visa.
“It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand’s health services,” an Immigration New Zealand spokesperson told News24. She listed diabetes, hypertension and heart disease as some of the risks Buitenhuis faces because of his weight.

On paper it seems an almost impossible goal: raise $32 million in a month through a crowdfunding campaign in order to roll out a new high-end cellular phone. But that’s exactly what UK-based technology company, Canonical, is looking to do. The company created Ubuntu (pronounced Oo-Boon-Too), a Linux-based operating system that integrates PC, tablet, mobile and television formats. Its newest smartphone project – which is called The Ubuntu Edge – will be its first piece of phone hardware, if it’s funded. The phone will boast a 4.5-inch sapphire crystal screen, 720p screen with a multi-core processor, 4GB of RAM, dual LTE antennas and 128GB of storage. The Edge will run Ubuntu’s OS as well as Android, according to its campaign pitch. Price? You can buy one through the crowdfunding campaign for $830. (See Canonical’s pitch of The Ubuntu Edge below) But can the company reach its $32 million mark? As of July 23, the campaign had raised almost $3.5 million on Indiegogo. The best reason to believe that the company can is Canonical’s 39-year-old CEO and founder, Mark Shuttleworth. The successful, South African serial entrepreneur was not named one of FORBES’ “12 Most Disruptive Names In Business” this year for nothing. In a move akin to charging a heard of oncoming bulls, Shuttleworth has puts his company head to head with deeply entrenched competitors by crafting a third operating system that plays in multiple device categories. In the mobile space, Ubuntu is up against Apple’s OS and Google’s Android, among others. In the PC realm – where Shuttleworth estimates some 20 million use Ubuntu– Microsoft is king. The company also has ambitions in the TV space. “Shall we begin?” Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela asks in the first trailer for “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.” As it turns out, marketing for the Weinstein Company release already began last week, when an international teaser for the Oscar hopeful debuted online. That clip showed precious little in the way of Elba, though it did feature his uncanny vocal impersonation of the South African leader; the “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” trailer that debuted on Thursday provides interested parties a whole lot more in the way of Elba and the film’s story.
Based on an original screenplay by William Nicholson and directed by Justin Chadwick, “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” focuses on Mandela’s younger days. “Public Enemy No. 1,” “Hunted By Police,” “Feared By The Government” read title cards in the beginning of the clip, before words like “Liberator” and “Revolutionary” flash across the screen. (“The Social Network” trailer still has an influence on modern movie marketing, it seems.)
For his part, Elba looks strong. He’s been mentioned as a possible Best Actor contender, and this trailer does nothing to deter that excitement.

The world is celebrating Nelson Mandela Day with acts of community service and messages of goodwill to the former South African president who remains hospitalized on his 95th birthday. Here are some of the international events:
UNITED NATIONS: The U.N. hosted an informal General Assembly in honor of Mandela with former United States President Bill Clinton and co-prisoner and Mandela friend Andrew Mlangeni scheduled to speak. U.N. staff also helped to rebuild homes in Long Island destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
WASHINGTON: The Congressional Black Caucus celebrated the life and legacy of Mandela at the Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. House Speaker John Boehner and South Africa’s ambassador to the United States Ebrahim Rasool were among guests slated to speak at the ceremony.
NEW YORK: The Tribeca Film Institute partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to commemorate Mandela Day with a video display in Times Square and a meeting in Duffy Square. A picture of a Mandela portrait by South African artist Paul Blomkamp with the words “Happy 95th Birthday Madiba!” was featured on a Times Square monitor throughout the day.
TORONTO: A community celebration featuring live music and family activities was at the Nelson Mandela Park Public School.
PARIS: The South African embassy in Paris hosts its annual Nelson Mandela Day drive to collect clothes, toys and non-perishable food items for charity. The embassy accepts donations until Aug. 31. The Hotel de Ville hosts a free exhibition, “Nelson Mandela: from Prisoner to President,” where visitors can learn about Mandela’s journey through films, photographs and sculptures. The exhibition will run through July 6.
ROME: An exhibit about Mandela’s life at an anti-racism center was visited by South Africa’s ambassador to Italy, Nomatemba Tambo.
INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION: Three astronauts from the International Space Station honored Mandela in a video message that included words from Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama and Bill and Hillary Clinton, among others.
“Nelson Mandela is the symbol of what humankind must strive for: Peace, brotherhood and a common goal to better every life on this planet. Our work here on the International Space Station mirrors exactly what Mr. Mandela spent his life trying to accomplish,” astronaut Karen Nyberg said for the group.
