Final Fantasy XIV's Jedi Mind Trick

Final? Square Enix doesn’t know the meaning of the word. That’s apparent enough from the avalanche of Final Fantasy games we’ve seen since 1987, but it’s especially true of its approach to its last MMORPG. By all accounts–including Square Enix’s–2010’s Final Fantasy XIV was an abomination, a shameful excuse for an MMORPG that couldn’t even pull off the simplest kill-and-fetch quest without tripping over itself. And so I tiptoed into this “reborn” incarnation of Eorzea with caution, fully expecting the world to crumble around me pixel by pixel. That didn’t happen. Against all odds, it was good, and I found myself reluctant to leave when the closed beta breathed its last. But was it enough to justify such a Herculean effort? I’m cautiously optimistic.

Former Eidos Montreal Boss Resigns

The former head and founder of Eidos Montreal has resigned his position and lashed out at Square Enix’s leadership in the process.

In a statement provided to Develop, Stephane D’Astous lamented the “lack of courage and lack of communication” from higher-ups, and explained he left due to irreconcilable differences.

“Since last year’s financial short-coming performance of Square Enix Europe, we (HQ London and GM Eidos-Montreal) have had growing and divergent opinions on what needed to be done to correct the situation,” he said.

“The lack of leadership, lack of courage and the lack of communication were so evident, that I wasn’t able to conduct my job correctly. I realised that our differences were irreconcilable, and that the best decision was unfortunately to part ways.”

Why Persona 4 is the JRPG I’ve Always Wanted, But Never Knew Existed

In recent years I feel like I’ve developed this weird love/hate relationship with the JRPG genre. I take huge delight in exploring the gorgeous, expansive worlds they provide, I revel in the charming melodrama, and I love the strategy found in their (usually) complex battle-systems. However, like many others, I’ve long since hit that point where it seems that too many high profile Japanese developers are sticking too readily to tried and tested conventions and not taking enough risks in furthering their art.

It appears to be a growing concern, which has seen Japanese development and its practices come under fire from several quarters in recent years. Indie developer Phil Fish famously upset pretty much everyone last year when he generalised that modern-day Japanese games ‘sucked’ and were ‘f***ing terrible’, but it’s not just Western industry figures that have been making these noises. Similar sentiments have been expressed by Japanese developers themselves; Keiji Inafune, as a quick example, has never been afraid to let rip at his home country’s games development. Meanwhile, major Japanese publishers such as Square Enix have found themselves going against what they know, acquiring Western talent and publishing studios in a bid to supplement their currently less-than-prolific JRPG-centred output.

How Tomb Raider, Hitman Failed to Hit Targets

Square-Enix has revealed exactly how many copies of Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman it expected to sell, after announcing that they all failed to hit targets last month.

Astonishingly, the publisher hoped to sell between 5 and 6 million copies of Tomb Raider in its first month, which would have placed it amongst some of the fastest-selling games ever. It managed 3.6 million, which by most standards is an extremely impressive launch.

Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs also underperformed. “We were looking at selling roughly 2-2.5 million in the EU/NA market based on its game content, genre and Metacritic scores,” reads the transcript of Square-Enix’s latest financial briefing. “In the same way, game quality and Metacritic scores led us to believe that Hitman had potential to sell 4.5-5 million units, and 5-6 million units for Tomb Raider in EUR, NA and Japan markets combined.”

New Square Enix President Will Review Whole Company

New Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda will conduct a thorough review of the company as part of his new role. As explained in a recent briefing session (translated by Siliconera), Masuda plans on “reviewing all Square Enix duties, business and assets on a zero-based budgeting standpoint.”

Matsuda said that “due to the radical change of environment, I’d like to fundamentally review what works and what doesn’t work for our company, then cast all of our resources towards extending what makes us successful and thoroughly squeezing out what doesn’t.”

Unity Engine Headed to PlayStation Platforms

Unity Technologies today announced a partnership with Sony that will see Unity tools developed for PlayStation platforms.

Announced on the PlayStation blog, the news means that games built in the Unity engine will be portable to the PS3, PS Vita, PS Mobile, and the future PS4.

Unity’s one of the most popular game creation programs in the business due to the ease with which developers, whether big-name or indie, can learn its tools. Companies such as EA, Ubisoft, and Square Enix use Unity in some of their projects, but this news is a real boon to independent developers and fans of indie games. Unity allows developers to easily port their games across numerous platforms, and with PlayStation now added to the list, the number of titles available to gamers is likely to increase significantly.

Japanese Gaming Roundup: Week of 3/20

Remember Japan? That country that used to make all the games you love? Good news! They’re still making lots of interesting stuff! You may not hear about those games as often these days as you do big-budget, high-profile Western titles, but that doesn’t mean nothing worth reporting is happening over there. That’s why every week I’ll be rounding up the most interesting events, news, and releases to come out of Japan.

The big news for the week — “big” in the sense that it involves games you will definitely someday play in English — concerns Final Fantasy X HD, which not only still exists but it getting pretty heftily fancied-up. Not content with simply up-rezzing the original PS2 game as they’re doing with Kingdom Hears 1.5 HD, Square Enix is reworking the graphics, too. And they’re including both FFX and its sequel Final Fantasy X-2 on the same PS3 disc. And they’re including the International Edition content for both titles, which adds new bosses and job classes.

Relaunching Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV is in an exception in an often brutal MMO market. It originally launched in 2010 for PC in a poorly optimized state with very little interesting content. Square Enix continued to patch the game, but it was clear major changes needed to be made. Other MMOs in situations like this would likely have dwindled and eventually been shut down forever. Square Enix decided to rewrite the graphics engine, overhaul the combat system, the interface and more, and is now in the process of bringing the revamped version, called A Realm Reborn, into closed beta testing. The PC beta test starts up on February 25 and the PS3 version will go into testing during the beta’s third phase. The plan is to launch both versions simultaneously, though a final release date has yet to be determined.

Why Sony Needs To Be More Aggressive With Exclusive PlayStation 4 Games

By John Gaudiosi, Contributor

Sony is all but assured of announcing its new PlayStation 4 console tonight at a big press event in New York City. Video game analyst PJ McNealy, founder of Digital World Research, will be in attendance at the big unveiling. With rumors of new exclusive games from Quantic Dream (Singularity), Konami (Metal Gear Solid 5), Square Enix and other powerhouses in gaming, exclusives will play a big role in getting consumers to fork over money for a new console – especially if PS4 goes head-to-head against the new Xbox this Christmas as many expect. …read more

NCSoft Licenses Unreal Engine 4

Guild Wars 2 publisher NCSoft has licensed Unreal Engine 4 from Epic. The publisher signed a “long-term deal” to use the technology for multiple upcoming projects and is the first Korean studio to license the engine.

Unreal Engine 4 is an extremely fascinating game engine in terms of its unprecedented efficiency and performance,” said NCsoft chief product officer James Bae. “We plan to release our best game ever using our Unreal Engine expertise and the new state-of-the-art Unreal Engine 4 tools.”

Details on specific projects haven’t been announced. NCSoft marks the third third-party developer to license the engine, following Square Enix signing a deal in October and Zombie Studios announcing Daylight last week.
