Unreal Engine 4, Frostbite 3 Will Not Support Wii U

When someone asks if Unreal Engine 4 will work on Wii U, Epic co-founder Mark Rein bursts out laughing. “No,” he says.

Following an Unreal Engine presentation at 2013’s Game Developer Conference, Rein clarifies his response to IGN, still laughing, “I just laugh at the question…Unreal Engine 4, we’re not PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U. It’s next-gen technology. That’s what we’re aiming for.”

So while UE4 proper won’t make its way onto Wii U, Rein explains that developers are capable of porting software powered by the engine. “The truth is, if a developer wanted to take an Unreal Engine game and put it on Wii U, they could,” Rein continues. “Unreal Engine 3 is kicking ass on Wii U. The best games on Wii U are made on our technology. What more do you want from us?”

Spec Ops: The Line Dev Working on Next-Gen Game

Yager, the European studio behind 2012’s cult favorite Spec Ops: The Line, is officially working on a new game. Epic Games has revealed that the company has licensed its new, next-generation engine – Unreal Engine 4 – to Yager for use in an “unannounced next-generation AAA game.”

Unfortunately, little else is known about Yager’s project apart from the engine it will be running on. While Spec Ops: The Line was a great game, it’s unlikely it sold well enough to warrant a sequel. However, when we hear more about what the 100+ man team at Yager is working on with more specificity, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Developers React to PlayStation 4

IGN and its wonderful readers have been reacting to the PlayStation 4 since its reveal on February 20 — even Xbox fans were floored. But what about the people who actually make games? After all, this is supposedly a platform “for developers by developers.”

We reached out to some of the industry’s brightest creative minds for feedback — what excites designers, directors, and leaders about the platform, what might be missing, and what’s Sony doing right?

This is what came back.

Zombie Studios on Daylight, Reviving Horror Games

It’s rare to see true horror in games anymore. Industry staples like Silent Hill and Resident Evil have long since moved past their horror roots, and even more recent entries like Dead Space have begun to incorporate more action. With the announcement of its first Unreal Engine 4 game, Daylight, Zombie Studios is looking to reverse that trend.

At the DICE summit in Vegas last week, IGN had a chance to sit down with Zombie creative studio head Jared Gerritzen and Daylight writer Jessica Chobot to talk about creating true horror experiences in an industry distancing itself from the genre, plus how Unreal Engine 4 changes the development landscape.

NCSoft Licenses Unreal Engine 4

Guild Wars 2 publisher NCSoft has licensed Unreal Engine 4 from Epic. The publisher signed a “long-term deal” to use the technology for multiple upcoming projects and is the first Korean studio to license the engine.

Unreal Engine 4 is an extremely fascinating game engine in terms of its unprecedented efficiency and performance,” said NCsoft chief product officer James Bae. “We plan to release our best game ever using our Unreal Engine expertise and the new state-of-the-art Unreal Engine 4 tools.”

Blacklight Dev Reveals Unreal Engine 4 Horror Game

Zombie Studios has announced Daylight, a new horror game built on Unreal Engine 4. The announcement came from the DICE summit in Vegas tonight, as Zombie finally provided details on the project it first teased in December.

Daylight is a horror game featuring a procedurally-generated environment. With only the light of a cell phone to guide them, players will navigate the halls of a dark building as a woman who’s just woken up. Every experience will be different as rooms are randomly generated, and players will only learn about the game’s story via clues they discover as they explore.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: A New Horror Adventure

The Astronauts, an independent studio comprised of ex-People Can Fly developers (Painkiller, Bulletstorm) has revealed The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, an upcoming horror adventure game. Built using Unreal Engine 3 the game is currently scheduled to launch sometime in 2013 only for PC.

You’ll play as a gifted detective who can apparently magically analyze crime scenes as you search for a missing boy in a mountainous area presided over by a mysterious force.

Game designer Adrian Chmielarz had this to say: “It’s a game about exploration and discovery. We’re not abandoning the gameplay – on the contrary: we’re trying to strip it down to the bone and make sure it’s always meaningful and truly makes the experience better.”

Too Human Disappears from Xbox Live

Early today, a Twitter user reported that everything associated with Too Human, Silicon Knights’ troubled Xbox 360 exclusive, had been pulled from the Xbox Marketplace. While just a product page remains, there was originally a demo, gamer pics, dashboard themes, and the full game available through Games on Demand.

No statement has been made about the disappearance yet, but all signs are pointing toward the court ruling back in November of 2012 that ordered Silicon Knights to cease production of any games made using Unreal Engine 3.
