Saints Row IV: Capitalising on Classification Confusion

On Monday afternoon it was announced that Saints Row IV had been slapped with a fresh Refused Classification rating by the Australian Classification Review Board. The Classification Review Board is a separate panel which reevaluates classification decisions made by the Australian Classification Board. Its decisions then take the place of the original ones.

It’s easy to be cynical about what looks like just another layer of classification bureaucracy but publishers have successfully had RC ratings overturned in the past. In December 2009 the Classification Review Board quashed a Refused Classification decision for Aliens vs. Predator, opting for an MA15+ rating instead. The Classification Review Board agreed with SEGA’s Australian branch that the violence in the game, while extreme, was acceptable within the context of the Alien franchise.

Is SEGA Teasing a Castle of Illusion Remake?

SEGA has released a new teaser trailer for a game set to release in Summer 2013, adding further evidence to the notion that a re-release of Castle of Illusion may be on the cards.

The old-fashioned trailer, which you can check out below, features legions of toy soldiers as well as a shadowy figure that looks suspiciously like Sleeping Beauty villain, Maleficent.

Last month, an adventure platformer called Castle of Illusion was spotted on the Brazilian Ratings website for Xbox 360, PS3, Vita and Wii U, leading to speculation that a re-release of the 1990 SEGA Genesis game was imminent.

What do you reckon? Should we be expecting an official announcement any day now, or is it possible SEGA is teasing some other Disney-themed game we haven’t heard of? Let us know what you reckon in the comments below.

Company of Heroes 2 Officially Delayed

Previously, the only release date known for Company of Heroes 2 was March 12, 2013 (the same day as Blizzard’s StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm). After the sale of developer Relic from the now defunct publisher THQ to SEGA, we’d heard next to nothing about when we’d finally get a chance to play the long-anticipated WW2-themed RTS.

Today that has changed.

SEGA and Relic have officially changed Company of Heroes 2’s release date to June 25th. The press release doesn’t get too specific about the reasons, other than stating, “Relic Entertainment is using the additional time to help Company of Heroes 2 meet the high standard set by its predecessor, the highest rated strategy game of all time.” Executive Producer Jonathan Dowdeswell also added, “We hate to disappoint our fans with a later than expected date as we know they are eager to play but we feel the additional time will help the team deliver the high quality sequel they deserve.”

Why Microsoft's Acquisition of SEGA Fell Through

Microsoft’s long-rumoured plan to acquire SEGA never came to pass because Bill Gates was sceptical the company had “enough muscle” to stop Sony, according to the company’s former VP of Windows Sales.

Joachim Kempin, who worked at Microsoft between 1983 and 2003, made the claim in an interview with IGN due to go live later today. He explained that the acquisition of SEGA was originally floated as an easy way for Microsoft to enter the console space and stop Sony, especially given the huge financial losses associated with in-house hardware manufacturing.

“There were three companies at that point in time, I think this was

Fire Emblem Crosses Over With Shin Megami Tensei

It looks like the characters of SEGA, Capcom and Namco won’t be the only ones crossing over for a Nintendo system in the near future. In today’s Nintendo Direct, it was officially announced that Atlus and Intelligent Systems are working on a crossover project for Wii U featuring the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises.

The thematic trailer shown doesn’t give away much, but it does feature Fire Emblem characters such as Marth from the original game, as well as very SMT visuals. As for Nintendo’s partnership with Atlus on this one, company president Satoru Iwata commented that as development of games grows larger and larger, “Nintendo cannot use the same approaches we have in the past.” Iwata also hinted that the company has “many more partners,” ones that will apparently be revealed sometime soon (perhaps in future Nintendo Direct broadcasts).
