Homeworld, Homeworld 2 HD Remakes Announced

During a panel at PAX Australia today, Gearbox announced upcoming HD remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2. In addition, the studio will make original, unaltered versions of both games available digitally.

No specific pricing or release date for either the HD versions or the unaltered versions has been announced, but Gearbox head Randy Pitchford noted that a “small team” is currently hard at work on the projects at Gearbox.

Gearbox acquired the rights to Homeworld back in April from THQ. At the time, Gearbox chief creative officer Brian Martel said the studio plans “to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games.”

What's After Saint's Row 4 For Volition?

Volition’s Jim Boone and Kate Nelson have spoken about their hopes for the future of Volition as well as the Saint’s Row franchise.

In an interview with IGN, the duo explained why Saint’s Row IV was never considered for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, and also talked about what Volition may work on next following THQ’s bankruptcy and the studio’s acquisition by Deep Silver.

The decision to focus on current gen consoles stems from the fact that the team were keen ensure the game could be properly polished. Boone explained that one of the studio’s earlier titles, Summoner, which was a PS2 launch title, taught them a valuable lesson about being overambitious.

WWE 2K14: A Taste of Immortality

The impossible has become possible.

The “Immortal” Ultimate Warrior, one of the most iconic and legendary wrestlers of all time, has returned to the storied saga of WWE – at least in video game form. Despite that, Warrior remains vague on what else his future holds. Will he return to WWE TV programming? Would he accept entry into WWE’s Hall of Fame? Many answers will only be provided in time. Perhaps it’s fitting that the same could be said about WWE 2K14. After playing basic matches for a couple hours, I have a better sense of how this iteration of the Yukes (and former THQ) franchise will fundamentally play, but no details on new modes, match types or other sweeping changes the developer might be plotting.

The impossible has become possible.

Bidding Closed on Sale of Remaining THQ Assets

Bidding has closed on the auction for the remaining intellectual property assets of THQ. As THQ confirmed in February, bids were received until April 15th for remaining assets including Darksiders, Red Faction, Homeworld and more, and sales are expected to be finalized by mid-May.

According to Polygon, court documents reveal that 17 final bids were received and are expected to bring in between $6-7 million. While the specific breakdown of bids and prices per property haven’t been disclosed, the documents do note that six different lots were up for auction (though we don’t know whether all six lots received bids):

PAX East Impressions: Metro: Last Light

By Jen Bosier, Contributor

If there’s one thing video games tend to latch onto, it’s a movie tie-in. There are hundreds of video games based on movie properties ranging from the Aliens franchise to the cinematic masterpiece that is The Godfather. It’s a rarer gem to find a game based off a novel — in fact, The Witcher series and Metro 2033 are two of the most “mainstream,” recent examples I can think of. The latter was an underrated game which managed to blend survival horror with post-apocalyptic action. It’s a phrase that seems impossible and yet, it mostly worked. Metro 2033 the game may have been rough around the edges, but the core concepts were interesting enough that when THQ‘s troubles came to a head earlier this winter, many feared for the future of Metro: Last Light. …read more

Saints Row IV Release Date and Debut Trailer

The speculation was true: Saints Row 4 will be coming to PC and current-gen consoles (that doesn’t include Wii U) on August 20th in the US and August 23rd in other territories.

To get a sense of the game’s new somber, gritty approach brace yourself for the debut trailer below:

Yeah, that’s a lot to process: robots, guitar case guns, super powers, and Tron-style light cycles. The trailer also refers to the game as “the climactic chapter of the Saga that changed all the rules”.

This time around the game is being published by Deep Silver, which acquired the rights for the popular franchise and its developer Volition after former owner THQ dissolved earlier in the year.

Company of Heroes 2 Officially Delayed

Previously, the only release date known for Company of Heroes 2 was March 12, 2013 (the same day as Blizzard’s StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm). After the sale of developer Relic from the now defunct publisher THQ to SEGA, we’d heard next to nothing about when we’d finally get a chance to play the long-anticipated WW2-themed RTS.

Today that has changed.

SEGA and Relic have officially changed Company of Heroes 2’s release date to June 25th. The press release doesn’t get too specific about the reasons, other than stating, “Relic Entertainment is using the additional time to help Company of Heroes 2 meet the high standard set by its predecessor, the highest rated strategy game of all time.” Executive Producer Jonathan Dowdeswell also added, “We hate to disappoint our fans with a later than expected date as we know they are eager to play but we feel the additional time will help the team deliver the high quality sequel they deserve.”

Metro: Last Light Release Date Announced

Metro: Last Light will be available from May 14 in America and May 17 in Europe, Deep Silver has announced.

The sequel to 2010’s Metro 2033 takes place in the year 2034, where nuclear war has turned the world into a post-apocalyptic wasteland meaning the former inhabitants of Moscow must take to the tunnels of the Metro to survive. Players will take control of Artyom, as he tries to fight off the various mutants that haunt the wasteland as well as stop impending civil war.

The future of the game seemed unclear following THQ going bankrupt, but the game was saved when Koch Media purchased both it and the Saint’s Row franchises at the company’s auction of assets.

Metro: Last Light is currently scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

WWE Rebranded as WWE 2K14 Under 2K Sports Label

2K has officially inked a five-year deal to publish WWE games. Under the 2K Sports label, the next WWE title will be re-branded as WWE 2K14 and Visual Concepts will be brought in to assist longtime WWE developer Yukes with the game. WWE 2K14 is still scheduled to arrive this fall.

“We looked at a lot of different leaders in the industry and talked to all of the big guys, and for us, we had been with THQ for so many years, it was nice to finally go out and date a few other companies and see what kind of thought process they had about the video game industry going forward,” WWE executive VP of consumer products Casey Collins told ESPN. “As we look at the next-gen systems coming out, whether that’s this holiday or next holiday, we want to make sure we align our property with who we thought would be a leader going forward on these next-gen systems.”

Take-Two Confirms WWE Publishing Deal

Take-Two has confirmed that it has made a deal to publish WWE games moving forward. In a statement provided to IGN, a 2K representative said the following:

“We can confirm that we have entered into an agreement to publish the WWE video game series that is developed by Yukes. Saints Row 4 Could Come as Soon as August

Saints Row 4 could be headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this August, rather than on the next-generation consoles expected to launch this fall. Publisher Deep Silver, who picked up the property following the dissolution of THQ, has yet to confirm any details.

However, Chris Stockman, design director on the original Saints Rowtweeted to IGN that “the word around the campfire is SR4 is shipping on current gen consoles in late August.” IGN inquired with Deep Silver, who stated they “are still working on

What's Next for THQs Games?

With the dust mostly settled on the THQ bankruptcy proceedings — that is, all of its active franchises and studios have found new homes — the big question that matters is: what’s next? When will these games launch? Will they launch at all? What will these development houses work on?

How the End of THQ Affects Employees

Today is the last day for employees of THQ’s corporate headquarters and Darksiders studio Vigil. In a memo sent to all affected employees and provided to IGN, THQ explains that most benefits will terminate today, and whether or not employees will receive a severance package or pay for vacation days has yet to be determined.

“Today the Court approved the sale of several of THQ’s assets,” the memo begins. “While some THQ employees are expected to be offered employment by the new owners, some positions will no longer be needed under the company’s new structure. We regret that your position is included in this latter category.”

The memo explains that employees have until the end of the day to remove personal items from their desk — after today “access to the building will be shut off” — and that the final round of payroll will occur today. Health benefits will continue until January 31st, with the possibility for up to one more month via an outsourced insurance service. Life insurance coverage will also terminate today, as will short-term or long-term disability coverage.

THQ Back Catalog to be Sold Separately

Following THQ’s sale of the majority of its assets yesterday, the one question that remained is what will happen to the franchises not included in this week’s auction. In a new interview with Game Informer, THQ president Jason Rubin has now confirmed that those titles will be sold off as well.

“There will be a separate process to sell off the back catalog and IP,” Rubin said. “That process will take place in the coming weeks.”
