Xbox One Reputation System Has Cheats and Jerks in its Sights

Microsoft has outlined in greater detail its recently revealed reputation system for Xbox One, explaining the specifics of the new system in an Xbox Wire post penned by Microsoft’s Michael Dunn, program manager on Xbox Live.

“If you don’t want to play with cheats or jerks, you shouldn’t have to,” writes Dunn. “Our new reputation model helps expose people that aren’t fun to be around and creates real consequences for trouble-makers that harass our good players.”

Your reputation score will ultimately see you slotted into one of three, colour-coded groups: “Good Player” (green), “Needs Improvement” (yellow), or “Avoid me” (red). Where you sit on this spectrum will be reflected on your gamer card.

Smart Match: Microsoft Explains Xbox One's Matchmaking

Microsoft has detailed what makes its Smart Match system for Xbox One’s online matchmaking an interesting proposition for online players. In addition to grouping players of like skill and reputation, “games will be able to share player stats with Xbox Live and each other; to learn, evolve, and provide you with the best possible matchmaking available,” according to Microsoft’s Mike Lavin.

More importantly, Smart Match frees players from wasting time waiting in lobbies by searching for players and matches in the background. “This means that less popular multiplayer modes and maps that have traditionally taken a long time to find players suddenly become playable,” Lavin says. Additionally, you can watch TV or play a one game while a friend sets up a match for you and your party in another.

Indies Will Self-Publish Games on Xbox One

Microsoft has reversed its policy and will allow independent developers to release Xbox One games without requiring a publisher. Moreover, any Xbox One console will be able to operate as a debug unit, allowing Microsoft to approve specific systems to play games that are still in development.

Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten provided the following statement to IGN:

“Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox Live. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox Live. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.”

Xbox Live "Totally Unacceptable" for Free-To-Play Games

CEO of Wargaming Victor Kislyi has been quite honest in his appraisal of Microsoft’s online gaming service with regards to free-to-play titles.

Speaking with Polygon at PAX Australia, Kislyi said that the arduous certification process Microsoft enforces for Xbox Live updates doesn’t work well with the free-to-play model.

“The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates,” Kislyi said. “But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates.”

Microsoft Posts 8% Q4 Growth for Xbox, Phone Division

During its latest investor earnings report, Microsoft announced that its Entertainment and Devices Division produced modest year-over-year growth, resulting in an 8% boost in revenue to $1.92 billion despite selling 3% less consoles (1 million) during its fourth quarter.

Xbox Live picked up the sales slack for Microsoft. The service produced 20% more revenue (compared to Q4 2012) in what the software giant characterized as a “soft console market.”

During its earnings report, Microsoft also revealed that it lost $900 million on its struggling Surface RT tablet. Despite that, the company still posted $4.97 billion in earnings from $19.9 billion in revenue.

You got some Twitch in my Raptr

Twitch, a video streaming website used mostly for gaming, is turning every game session into a “Let’s Play” event that you can broadcast to everyone. It only makes sense that it would find its way into as much gaming related stuff as possible—thus it squeezes into Raptr, a desktop app that works as a bridge between web content and gaming while also acting as a gamer’s social network.

Raptr manages Steam, Xbox Live and PSN accounts to keep track of all the games you own, the stats that comes with them and the time you’ve spent in them. From all of this you are ranked and awarded with achievements and rewards.

Starting Thursday, July 18 Raptr will allow you to stream straight to your Twitch account and manage the channel from in game.

“A goal of Twitch is to be wherever gamers are, whether it’s on laptops and handheld devices or integrated into gaming consoles and software. By bringing live streaming functionality at the touch of a button to the Raptr Desktop App, it’s one more step in achieving this ubiquity for our brand while attracting a new batch of broadcasters from Raptr’s passionate community,” Twitch CEO Emmett Shear said.

Filed under:

It hasn’t even been three weeks since the first Grid 2 DLC hit the digital intertubes, and here we are getting the second one. This could be because the Codemaster folks want to remedy one of the most noticeable omissions in a game we found an “awfully fun” way to pass time while you wait for a next-gen console: a lack of cars.

The Drift Pack DLC gets you Daijiro Yoshihara’s 650-horsepower Nissan 240sx, Tyler McQuarrie’s 750-hp Chevrolet Camaro, Chris Forsberg’s V8-powered NOS Energy Nissan 370Z and the 570-hp Team Orange Mitsubishi Evo X. You can get it on Xbox Live for 480 Microsoft Points ($6.00), on the PS3 for $5.99 and for Windows PCs for $5.99 from Steam.

The press release and video below can fill you in on more of the smoking details.

Microsoft's New Toy Is a Preemptive Attack on Apple

By Rick Munarriz, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

A lot has been said about Microsoft‘s Xbox One since it was introduced on Tuesday. However, here’s something that you probably haven’t heard: Xbox One is a preemptive strike on Apple .

Think about it. Apple is working on a smart television. Shortly before his death, Steve Jobs told his biographer that he had cracked the problem with smart TVs. CEO Tim Cook told NBC’s Brian Williams — on primetime television — that it’s an area of “intense interest” at Apple.

Let’s dream out loud. What would an Apple smart TV do?

Well, thanks to the popularity of Siri, it’s a safe bet that there would be some degree of voice recognition. Xbox One has that. “Watch TV” switches to live TV. “Watch AMC” switches the channel. “What’s on HBO?” pulls up the channel’s listings guide.

Apple’s device would also probably incorporate FaceTime video chat. Yes, Microsoft’s all over that. The Xbox One allows for Skype video chats — with multiple users at the same time.

Naturally, there would be some App Store integration with live content, but Xbox One is there already. You can pull up personalized fantasy stats during NBA and NFL games. You can be playing a Blu-ray disc and switch to a split screen to pull up Internet Explorer to figure out where you know that actress from through IMDB or pull up movie ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

App Store integration naturally means playing games on your TV, and Xbox One naturally will have Apple beat on that front.

The clincher here is that Microsoft already has tens of millions of active Xbox Live users. They all won’t hop on the Xbox One platform right away, but they will over time as prices get cheaper.

However, as expensive as the Xbox One will be, a full blown Apple HDTV will probably cost more than a Microsoft console with an existing flat screen. Now that we know that Microsoft will have its new toy out in time for this year’s holiday shopping season, it’s not as if Apple can get a head start here.

The more you think about it, the more you may start to realize that Apple may already be too late.

The only way Apple could realistically have a game-changer in an Xbox One world would be to revolutionize pay TV. Rolling out a piecemeal service in which consumers pay only for the channels that they watch — or the content that they watch — would more than justify Apple’s inevitably high price.

The problem, unfortunately, is that cable networks have every reason to be uncooperative here. They stand to lose big money if Apple disrupts cable and satellite television providers. If Apple hasn’t been able to get iRadio off the ground as negotiations with the music labels have been reportedly rough, how is Apple going to talk studios and content creators to disrupt a model that will save consumers money at their expense?

Microsoft CFO Stepping Down

As part of its Q3 earnings report this afternoon, Microsoft posted $6.06 billion in profit from $20.49 billion in quarterly revenue — down from $21.5 billion in the previous quarter, but up 18% from the same period last year. The company also announced that chief financial officer, Peter Klein, would be stepping down after nearly 11 years at the company and four years as CFO. While no reason was given for the senior executive’s departure, Microsoft said that Klein would be leaving at the end of its fiscal year in July. A new CFO will be named within “several weeks.”

As for the finer points of its financial progress for the quarter, Microsoft reported a 23% increase in its Windows division, despite reports of Windows 8 driving record declines in global PC shipments. The Entertainment and Devices division, which includes Xbox, generated $2.53 billion — an increase of 56% from the same quarter last year, but a 32% drop from Q2. Microsoft is reporting that Xbox Live now boasts 46 million members worldwide.

We loved Limbo here at IGN — we gave it a 9.0 — and are eager to learn more about developer PlayDead’s upcoming brand-new title, known only as Project 2. In the meantime, at least you have Limbo on Vita to look forward to.
