3rd victim in SF crash: 15-year-old Chinese girl

The third person to die from injuries suffered when an Asiana Airlines jetliner crash landed in San Francisco was identified as a 15-year-old Chinese girl who attended school with the other two victims.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault on Saturday confirmed the identity of the third victim as Liu Yipeng.

He said that she was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital with head injuries after the July 6 crash and died there Friday morning.

Chinese state media said she attended school with the two 16-year-old girls who also died in the crash.

Liu Yipeng’s identification comes a day after her death was announced amid the official confirmation that one of the other girls who died in the disaster had been covered on the runway in flame-retardant foam and hit by a fire truck speeding to the crash site, a disclosure that raised the tragic possibility she could have survived the crash only to die in its chaotic aftermath.

Police and fire officials confirmed Friday that Ye Meng Yuan was hit by a fire truck racing to extinguish the blazing Boeing 777.

“The fire truck did go over the victim at least one time. Now the other question is, ‘What was the cause of death?'” San Francisco police spokesman Albie Esparza said. “That’s what we are trying to determine right now.”

All three girls killed were from China.

Ye Meng Yuan’s close friend Wang Linjia was among a group of injured passengers who did not get immediate medical help. Rescuers did not spot her until 14 minutes after the crash. Wang Linjia’s body was found along with three flight attendants who were flung onto the tarmac.

Moments after the crash, while rescuers tried to help passengers near the burning fuselage, Wang Linjia and some flight attendants lay in the rubble almost 2,000 feet away. A group of survivors called 911 and tried to help them.

Survivors said that after escaping the plane, they sat with at least four victims who appeared to be seriously hurt. They believe one of them was one of the girls who died.

Protesters of Zimmerman acquittal march in LA, SF

Demonstrators protested in three California cities against the acquittal of George Zimmerman and officials say they broke windows and vandalized cars in Oakland.

The Oakland police dispatch office said about 100 people protested there and police were dealing with acts of vandalism. The office had no word of any arrests.

Local media reports said some marchers vandalized a police squad car and police formed a line to block the protesters’ path.

The Oakland demonstration followed a raucous but largely peaceful one in San Francisco, which police say ended by 10 p.m.

City News Service reported that the verdict also sparked protests in Los Angeles, where hundreds of people gathered in a park for what police termed a peaceful vigil.

At one point, a group stopped a passenger train and police worked to persuade them to return to the nearby park.

Police yet to disclose motive in SF jewelry store killing

A bloodied gunman suspected of killing two women and seriously wounding a man inside a jewelry store at a popular San Francisco shopping center is in custody, but police have yet to release a motive.

Officers encountered the suspect Friday outside the San Francisco Giftcenter & Jewelrymart in the trendy South of Market area. Initially, the officers were not sure if the man, who had blood on his clothes, was a shooting victim or a suspect, police Chief Greg Suhr said.

The man, whose name was not released, then opened fire at officers while retreating into a restaurant, Suhr said.

“The suspect fired additional multiple rounds at the officers and then, we believe, ran out of ammunition, threw the gun on the ground and surrendered,” Suhr said.

Officers did not return fire because the sidewalks were crowded with shoppers and residents, police said.

Inside the shopping center, officers found two women dead and a man injured with gunshot and stab wounds at the Victoga jewelry shop. One woman was shot and the other suffered “wounds from an edged weapon,” police said.

A gun and a knife were recovered from the scene.

Witnesses say the women were employees and the man is the shop’s owner. Their names have not been released.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

SWAT teams and K-9 units swept the building for any additional suspects.

“We believe from video in an adjacent store that there was one suspect. We believe that it is the suspect we have in custody,” Suhr said.

Police were unsure of the relationship between the suspect and the victims, Suhr said, even though he had previously been seen in the building, according to witnesses. Investigators were also trying to determine if Friday’s shooting was connected to a botched robbery.

The shopping center is just blocks from the Hall of Justice, which is the home of San Francisco Superior Court, a jail and police headquarters. Several tech companies, including online game maker Zynga, are also in the neighborhood.

Witnesses and bystanders ran for cover when the shooting began.

“I had just parked when I heard the bullets go `Pop! Pop! Pop!”‘ said Connie Angland of Los Angeles, who was walking toward a nearby REI to buy a present for father’s 70th birthday. “It was scary.”

Third Chinese girl dies from injuries in SF crash

A girl who had been in intensive care since the crash-landing of an Asiana Airlines flight has died, hours after authorities confirmed one of the two Chinese teenagers killed in the disaster was hit by a fire truck speeding to the crash site.

The disclosure about the Chinese teenager raised the tragic possibility that she could have survived the crash only to die in its chaotic aftermath.

No one knows yet whether the two teens lived through the initial impact at the San Francisco airport. But police and fire officials confirmed Friday that Ye Meng Yuan, 16, was hit by a fire truck racing to extinguish the blazing Boeing 777.

“The fire truck did go over the victim at least one time. Now the other question is what was the cause of death?” police spokesman Albie Esparza said. “That’s what we are trying to determine right now.”

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said the results of his initial inquiry into the deaths would likely be released sometime next week. He would not comment on the police investigation.

Her close friend Wang Linjia, also 16, was among a group of injured passengers who did not get immediate medical help. Rescuers did not spot her until 14 minutes after the crash. Wang Linjia’s body was found along with three flight attendants who were flung onto the tarmac.

The other girl, also from China, died Friday morning. San Francisco General Hospital said she had been in critical condition since arriving Saturday after the accident. Officials did not identify the girl at the request of her parents. Her age was also withheld.

Moments after the July 6 crash, while rescuers tried to help passengers near the burning fuselage, Wang Linjia and the flight attendants lay in the rubble almost 2,000 feet away. A group of survivors called 911 and tried to help them.

Members of the group — martial arts athletes and their families returning from a competition in South Korea — said that after escaping the plane, they sat with at least four victims who appeared to be seriously hurt. They believe one of them was one of the girls who died.

Suspected gunman arrested in 2 SF shooting deaths

A bloodied gunman suspected of killing two women and seriously wounding a man at a shopping center in a crowded San Francisco neighborhood was arrested after opening fire on police officers, authorities said.

Officers encountered the suspect Friday outside the San Francisco Giftcenter & Jewelrymart in the trendy South of Market area. At first they were not sure if the man, who had blood on his clothes, was a shooting victim or a suspect, police Chief Greg Suhr said.

The man, whose name was not released, opened fire at officers while retreating into a restaurant, Suhr said. The man kept shooting until he apparently ran out of ammunition and surrendered, Suhr said.

Officers did not return fire because the sidewalks were crowded with shoppers and residents.

The suspect was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A gun and a knife were recovered from the scene.

SWAT officers swept the building, but police said there were no outstanding suspects.

“We believe from video in an adjacent store that there was one suspect. We believe that it is the suspect we have in custody,” Suhr said.

The man arrested had been in that area before, according to witnesses.

Inside the shopping center, police found the two women dead in the lobby. One woman was shot and the other suffered “wounds from an edged weapon,” police said. Their names were not immediately available. A witness said at least one of the women worked at a jewelry store inside the building.

Another man with life-threatening gunshot and stab wounds was taken to a hospital, police said.

2 killed, suspect arrested at SF shopping center

Two women were killed and a man was wounded on Friday before a suspect covered in blood was arrested at a shopping center in a crowded San Francisco neighborhood that is home to police headquarters and several tech companies, authorities said.

Investigators were trying to determine if the shooting was connected to a botched robbery.

Responding officers encountered the suspect outside the San Francisco Giftcenter & Jewelrymart in the trendy South of Market area.

The man, whose name was not released, opened fire at officers while retreating into a restaurant, police Chief Greg Suhr said. The man kept shooting until he apparently ran out of ammunition and surrendered, Suhr said.

Officers were interviewing witnesses who ducked for cover when the shooting began.

“Somebody was crying or yelling for help. Then I saw the SWAT. There was a dozen of them. They told us to lock ourselves in,” Veronica Sirois, who was shopping at the gift center, told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I saw blood on the way out and a pair of bodies.”

Cleaning crawlspace concrete dust and debris.

By dougmc

The house was built in 1953. The crawlspace, (1425 SF) floor is rough, worn concrete. I want to clean it out and encapsulate it. I put on a respirator and started sweeping. It is very dry and there is tons of dust and broken concrete debris. I want to think this through and do this the easiest way. I called around for HEPA dry/wet vac rentals but could not find any. I googled this problem but did not find anything. if I have to buy equipment I will. I have never done this before so I don’t know. Any help is appreciated.

Pool motor 1/2 hp AOSmith runs fine, 1/2 hp Marathon overheats

By Hal_S

Have a bit of a puzzle. Do Marathon brand motors tend to run hotter than AOSmith?

Swimming pool setup worked for decades with a 40 year old pool pump and a reused 1/2 hp 115v AOSmith motor that met the pump specs.
Pump finally rusted beyond being patchable. Impeller was worn down.
Swapped in a 20 year old pool pump with new impeller, with a reused 1/2 hp Marathon motor.
AOS is model S48H2N103, Marathon is an O213 model 56C34D2099
Motors are basically identical in all specs hp, hz, rpm, SF etc.

Minor difference is the Marathon is set to run at 240v (tag says 5.2amps / 3.6amps.)
Pool is about 40′ from the garage sub-panel, wiring is 14 gauge.

AOS basically ran 24/7 from mid May to mid September. Now, the AOSmith motor always ran warm, (amps on tag are 6.7/8.4) but the Marathon motor runs hot to the touch, trips the overheat protection after about 4 hours during a 90 degree day.

Used compressed air to blow out the dust and spiders; guess the next step is to disassemble the Marathon, clean off, reassemble and hope it runs cooler.

So, any suggestions on how why a motor runs hot and what to check?

Zombies of the Tech World: The VC Brain Drain

By Alexander Taub, Contributor

On April 5th, Danielle Morrill wrote a post titled Zombie VCs on her personal blog. Morrill, a popular fixture in the SF tech scene, former Employee #1 at Twilio and current founder and CEO of Referly, posted a list of VCs she considered zombies. To say that the post caused a bit of an uproar in the venture space, would be an understatement. Zombie VCs, according to Morrill, are “venture firms in which the partners are 3-5 years into investing their fund, don’t have very strong results so far, and are struggling to raise new funds.”  Instead of using their remaining capital to invest in new companies, they decide instead to double-down in follow-on rounds with their existing portfolio. And yet, they still take meetings with new companies giving them the glimmer of hope for an investment. Morrill ultimately infers that these VCs take the meetings to make themselves seem relevant, rather than to actually invest in the ideas. The zombies almost always decline to invest due to the risk associated with startups.
