'2 Guns' Shows The Expanding Possibilities Of Comic Book Movies

By Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes Staff

Normally, when you think of comic book movies, you think of superheroes, not Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg shooting up a gang of drug lords in the Mexican desert. But the new movie, 2 Guns, is a different kind of comic movie — one with no superheroes in sight. …read more

2 Guns Review

By Scott Collura

Have I seen this movie before? I think I’ve seen this movie before.

Universal’s new action-thriller/buddy-comedy 2 Guns is the kind of picture that’s full of been-there, done-that characters, twists, and action beats that are as familiar as houseguests who have overstayed their welcome, know it, and don’t care.

Denzel Washington should know better than this. Mark Wahlberg, well… maybe not. But come on, Denzel. We expect more from you.

The pair play undercover law enforcement agents hot on the trail of a Mexican drug lord (Edward James Olmos). The trick is neither Washington’s DEA agent Robert “Bobby” Trench or Wahlberg’s Navy intelligence officer Michael “Stig” Stigman knows the other guy is secretly on the side of the law. Bobby thinks the undercover Stig is a crook and vice versa, so much confusion and comedic interplay is meant to result from this arrangement — amid the gun battles, fistfights, and car chases, of course. (That includes a memorable car chase/fistfight combo scene that is perhaps the highpoint of the film.)

Ted Now the Biggest R-rated Comedy Overseas

Seth MacFarlane’s Ted has passed The Hangover Part II as the highest-grossing R-rated comedy overseas.

The Wrap reports that Universal’s pic starring Mark Wahlberg and MacFarlane’s trash-talking teddy bear has now hit the $327 million mark at the international box office, matching Warner Bros.’ 2011 hit The Hangover Part II. The film was first released abroad back in July.

The quirky duo comedy made an additional $1 million in Japan this weekend, putting it at $42 million there. That’s only second to the UK, which has pulled in $48 million for the Uni film.

How Ted Appeared at The Oscars

Tippett Studio has revealed how they made Seth MacFarlane’s Ted present alongside Mark Wahlberg at yesterday’s Academy Awards, where they presented Oscars for Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.

The segment was brought to life by Tippett Studio‘s Blair Clark, MacFarlane (the 2012 film’s director and host of the 85th Academy Awards ceremony), as well as the telecast’s director Don Mischer and his broadcast team. Here’s what Tippett Studio had to say about the making of the segment:

For the filming of the segment, a duplicate of the Academy Awards stage was constructed at CBS Studios, with lighting and cameras situated to match the Dolby Theatre set up. The feat involved planning exact camera positions so that the animation, rendered using Dell Precision workstations, would integrate seamlessly on Oscar Night with Wahlberg and the show audience. With five nominees in each category, Tippett artists created 10 different outcomes in just a four-week production schedule. As the winners were unknown before the envelope was opened, Mischer and his team sat at the ready to push the button for the correct winner during the live broadcast.

Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux Oscars 2013: Engaged Stars Look Ravishing On The Red Carpet (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Megastar Jennifer Aniston arrived at the Oscars tonight (Feb. 24) and looked absolutely glowing in a strapless red gown. Fiance Justin Theroux walked hand in hand with his leading lady, who is also a presenter at tonight’s awards ceremony.

Aniston’s “Wanderlust” co-star Paul Rudd is also a presenter, as are Salma Hayek, Melissa McCarthy, Liam Neeson, John Travolta, Ben Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Wahlberg and Ted, and most of the cast of “The Avengers.”

Though neither Jen nor Justin is nominated for an award tonight, they have their hands full with their own big day. The couple has been prepping quite vigorously for their wedding and have recently enrolled in “marriage bootcamp,” an intense three-day therapy session where they talk about potential problems and share massages.

Melissa McCarthy Oscars 2013: ‘Identity Thief’ Star Arrives On Red Carpet With Husband (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Melissa McCarthy is looking very prom-like on the red carpet tonight (Feb. 24)!

Last year, McCarthy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her raunchy, hilarious role as Megan in “Bridesmaids” but lost to Octavia Spencer (“The Help.”) This year she’s a presenter, as are Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Ben Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Wahlberg and Ted, and most of the cast of “The Avengers.”

The breakout funny-woman was the center of a storm recently when New York Observer critic Rex Reed wrote a nasty review of her new movie, “Identity Thief.” In it, he criticized her weight by calling her a “female hippo,” “tractor-sized” and “obese and obnoxious.” Jenny McCarthy, Melissa’s cousin, defended her publicly and said “she’s very, very, very talented and people know that. So, [Reed] can go to hell.”

Mila Kunis on 50 Shades of Grey Rumors

Earlier this week Mila Kunis told Extra’s Mario Lopez that she was “not disinterested” in playing Anastasia Steele, the female lead in the upcoming adaptation of the “erotic novel” 50 Shades of Grey. She did note that she had not explicitly expressed interest in the film, though.

A rumor circulated earlier this month that the Oz the Great and Powerful star had told U.K.’s The Sun that she’d love to portray Christian Grey‘s partner in…”play.” The outlet quoted Kunis as saying, “There are times when you just want to do something fun and different, because you’re going to have a good time doing it.”

In truth, the interview never took place. Of course, now that the rumor has started something may develop. The internet often gives studios and filmmakers ideas – note Kunis’ Ted co-star Mark Wahlberg’s role in Transformers 4.

Michael Bay Talks Transformers Redesign

Speaking to Forbes, Bay said “We’re going to start off smaller. There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast.”

Bay’s next film is Pain & Gain, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, with the latter also appearing in Transformers 4.

Entourage Movie Gets the Green-Light

Seems like it’s full-steam ahead on the Entourage movie, with Warner Bros. finally giving the film the green-light.

The hugely popular series – which revolved around movie star Vincent Chase and his Hollywood exploits with brother Johnny Drama and friends Turtle and E – ran on HBO from 2004 to 2011.

Ever since then a movie has been rumoured, with everyone involved intimating they’d be keen to return.

And according to Deadline, rumour became reality last night when the studio finally said yes to Doug Ellin’s screenplay. Ellin – who executive produced the show with Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson – will also direct, although there’s no word yet on a plot.
