Report: New details on death of man at Md. theater

Police tried to forcibly remove a man with Down syndrome from a Maryland theater with tragic results, despite warnings from his caretaker that her client would “freak out” if they touched or spoke to him, according to her statement contained in an investigative file released Monday.

Robert Ethan Saylor, 26, died of asphyxia minutes later, after three Frederick County Sheriff’s deputies handcuffed the flailing, 294-pound man as he screamed, cursed and cried for his mother, witnesses say. Saylor’s offense, according to the file documents: He had not purchased a ticket for a repeat viewing of the movie “Zero Dark Thirty.”

The 98-page incident report and handwritten statements from 22 witnesses add new details to a case that remains in the spotlight six months after Saylor’s death on Jan. 12. Critics continue to call for an independent investigation of the deputies’ actions after a grand jury’s decision in March not to indict them for what the state medical examiner’s office has ruled a homicide.

The 18-year-old caretaker, whose name is redacted from the documents, wrote that she had been Saylor’s caretaker for three months before he died.

She said Saylor, known to his family as Ethan, had a history of angry outbursts, including one earlier that night. They had already seen the movie once and were outside the Frederick theater when she asked Saylor if he was ready to go home. Saylor began cursing and punched a storefront window, she told police.

Somewhat frightened, the caretaker called Saylor’s mother, Patti Saylor, of New Market.

“Patti told her to just wait him out and his attitude will change,” an investigator wrote in a follow-up interview report.

The caretaker then spoke by phone with another of Saylor’s caretakers. He advised her to leave Saylor in front of the theater while she got the car, giving him a few minutes alone to calm himself. But by the time she returned, Saylor had gone back into the theater and seated himself. As she walked in, a manager was telling Saylor he had to leave the auditorium.

“I explained, ‘Yes, we are having a little issue, I’ll handle it. We just have to be patient,” the caretaker wrote.

The manager then summoned one of the three deputies, Sgt. Rich Rochford. All of the deputies were moonlighting as mall security …read more

AP NewsBreak: police were told Saylor would resist

A caretaker says in a statement she warned officers not to touch a man with Down syndrome or he would “freak out,” shortly before he died during a bid to forcibly remove him from a Maryland movie theater.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office released a report Monday on the January asphyxiation death of 26-year-old Robert Ethan Saylor.

Saylor’s 18-year-old caretaker said in the statement she told three sheriff’s deputies moonlighting as security officers not to touch or speak to Saylor because he would resist. She said a deputy insisted Saylor leave because he hadn’t paid for a second viewing of “Zero Dark Thirty.”

Saylor died after being handcuffed and taken down. A grand jury declined to indict the deputies for what the state medical examiner’s office ruled a homicide.

Still Time To Stop Al Jazeera America!

By Cliff Kincaid

Al Jazeera is under scrutiny for subversion in Egypt, and facing a mutiny from its own reporters over supporting the Muslim Brotherhood there. But The Washington Post assures us in a story that the channel’s official launch in the United States is on August 20, and its coverage will be different.

Philip Seib, author of The Al Jazeera Effect, is quoted as saying, “I don’t think you’ll see al-Jazeera America touting the Muslim Brotherhood. It will be more like CNN.”

But the foreign owners in Qatar will remain the same, and that is part of the problem. Former Attorney General Michael Mukasey has said that Al Jazeera’s purchase of Al Gore’s Current TV should be the subject of a congressional inquiry because of the channel’s foreign sponsorship.

As Accuracy in Media has been reporting for over six years, the anti-American channel works hand-in-glove with the Muslim Brotherhood and its associated terrorist groups, including al Qaeda and Hamas. Nothing has changed. In fact, Al Jazeera has become more open about its work as a foreign policy instrument of Qatar, including the promotion of al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups in Syria.

It is apparent that the Egyptian military and its supporters in the pro-democracy movement didn’t want Egypt to become another Syria.

The Muslim Brotherhood website still carries a story referring to Al Jazeera as “the greatest Arab media organization.” The channel originally made a name for itself by airing al-Qaeda videos, and one of its correspondents was convicted of being an agent of the terrorist group that carried out the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The hit movie “Zero Dark Thirty,” based on the killing of bin Laden, notes that the al-Qaeda leader was tracked down in part by locating a nearby Al Jazeera office that received and aired terrorist videos.

In response to the jailing of Al Jazeera journalists in Cairo after the overthrow of Mohamed Morsi, the channel proclaimed, “Regardless of political views, the Egyptian people expect media freedoms to be respected and upheld.”

Broadcaster Jerry Kenney, a leading critic of the Qatar-funded propaganda network, said, “This is hilarious. Media freedoms? Why don’t they allow it in Qatar?” Qatar, which sponsors and funds Al Jazeera, is a dictatorship that jails independent journalists and even poets critical of the regime.

But that doesn’t seem to bother Soledad O’Brien or the other Americans who are going to work for Al Jazeera America. “If you look at what they’re doing at Al Jazeera English: High quality journalism,” she says, oblivious to the fact that while its slant has been watered down somewhat, the channel still has a bias in favor of global jihad.

To cite one example, note our report on Al Jazeera English airing sympathetic coverage about, and running “exclusive” interviews with, terrorist leaders from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), whose symbol is an AK-47 rifle and a black flag rising from the globe.

One Al Jazeera story, headlined “Mali: The ‘gentle’ face of al-Qaeda,” was picked up by The Huffington Post, one of the most-read online news sites in the …read more

Zero Dark Thirty Blu-ray Review

By Matt Fowler

Even though, since it’s release and subsequent Best Picture loss at the Oscars to Argo, many have retro-criticzed Zero Dark Thirty for skimping on characters and being less-than-accurate in its quasi-realistic approach to telling the story of the global hunt for Osama Bin Laden, it can’t be denied that the movie isn’t a genuinely thrilling, and sometimes uncomfortably unflinching, experience. The question is however: Is this movie you’d want to revisit over and over?

From a craftsmanship standpoint, Zero Dark Thirty is as good as they come. Bigelow’s become famous over the years for her tense, immersive action sequences and the film does a magnificent job of taking us through a brutal 10-year investigation. Aside from Jessica Chastain‘s wonderfully subdued performance as Maya, the film has come to be known for its final 10-minutes – which features the SEAL Team 6 nighttime raid on the compound in Abbottabad and the killing of Bin Laden. These aspects still hold up and the raid, especially, benefits from Blu-ray, despite parts of it which only feature darkness and moving shapes.

Chastain May Swing Into Tarzan Reboot

Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain may swing into Harry Potter director David Yates‘ big screen revival of Tarzan.

The New York Post claims the Zero Dark Thirty and Lawless actress is “said to be the first choice to play Jane” in the Warner Bros. project.

True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard will play Tarzan, who in this version will reportedly already be a fully assimilated member of British society when he’s asked by Queen Victoria to investigate trouble in the Congo.

Samuel L. Jackson will play an American mercenary who helps Tarzan in his quest to rid the Congo of a brutal warlord.

Video: Coup D’état Within The White House

By Kris Zane

In Ron Suskind’s book Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington, and the Education of a President, the White House is described as a playpen with children running amuck, with little if any adult supervision. Larry Summers, part of Obama’s former economic “dream team,” is reported to have said “We’re home alone. There’s no adult in charge.”

In preparation for the propaganda film Zero Dark Thirty, the intelligence community hemorrhaged classified information about the Osama Bin Laden raid to mega-director Kathryn Bigelow, expecting a hagiographic ode to Obama.  But Obama and Hollywood blacklisted the movie for portraying torture as the key to getting Osama Bin Laden. Additionally, Obama was merely given a “cameo,” in which after almost thirty minutes of non-stop torture, including waterboarding, Obama appears on a TV screen in one of his idiotic softball interviews, castigating the use of torture in the previous administration and vociferously stating that he had stamped out the practice in his own administration. Obama is made to look like a fool, and his administration is portrayed as a bunch of paper pushers who could care less about avenging the deaths of thousands of Americans for the events on 9/11.

But both Larry Summers and Kathyrn Bigelow got it wrong. There is an adult in charge. There is someone in the Obama administration who is not merely a paper pusher.

Oddly, that person did not get to where she is by being elected by the American people. And oddly, she didn’t want to take out Bin Laden.

We are speaking here of Valerie Jarrett, former Chicago slum lord, born in Iran, and (as expected) was coddling Muslim extremists.  She and she alone is the reason it took the Obama administration months to take out Bin Laden after his location was made known.

In the weeks and months leading up to the killing of Osama Bin Laden, military and administration officials continually told the Obama administration that the window of opportunity was disappearing with each passing day. There were two reasons for this: Obama’s “no one in charge” manner of governing—that is, his indecisiveness–and the real power in the White House (Valerie Jarrett, chief advisor to Obama, continually subjugating and overruling kill plans made by military and administration officials.

According to a May 2011 email of intelligence giant Stratfor hacked by WikiLeaks, an internal White House source states there was a literal coup d’état within the White House—albeit temporary—overruling both Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett’s resistance to take out Bin Laden.

In the email, Obama is described as an “absentee President” in the decision-making process to kill Bin Laden.  Every time officials would present a kill plan to Obama, Valerie Jarrett would stoke Obama’s doubts and the operation would be cancelled. In one case, officials presented a plan to drop a bomb on the compound, only to have Jarrett throw a monkey wrench into the plan.

According to the hacked email:

Initially, as he had done before, the president …read more

9-11 families upset with Zero Dark Thirty

By hnn

Zero Dark Thirty” took just one minor award at the Oscars last night. There was a lot of debate about the way the film depicted torture during the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

Turns out that wasn’t the only controversy.

The film starts with actual voices of victims of September 11, recorded as they made their last phone calls. For Mary and Frank Fetchet, it brings back painful memories. One of those voices was their son Brad, who worked on the 89th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower.

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Bradley Cooper and more stars celebrated Hollywood’s biggest night on Feb. 24 at the Oscars. (An Academy Awards winners list for 2013 can be found below.)

Hosted by Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”), the 85th annual Academy Awards included a wide array of box office hits. For the first time ever, the Best Picture category included six films with grosses over $100 million, including “Argo,” “Django Unchained,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” “Zero Dark Thirty,” another Best Picture nominee, was in striking distance of nine figures as well. (The other Best Picture nominees, “Amour” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” were limited releases.)

The history making didn’t end there. The Oscars 2013 ceremony also included opportunities for Day-Lewis and Affleck to enter the record books. Day-Lewis, nominated for “Lincoln,” won his third Best Actor Oscar, an Academy Awards record. Affleck, meanwhile, became only the fourth director in the 85-year history of the Academy Awards to see his film win Best Picture without a subsequent nomination for Best Director. (The last time this happened was at the 1990 ceremony when “Driving Miss Daisy” won.)

After months of competition, debate and conjecture, it’s finally time for Hollywood’s biggest night: the Oscars. (Live updates from the 85th annual Academy Awards can be found below.)

The 2013 Oscars ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by “Ted” director Seth MacFarlane, ends an awards season that started all the way back in January of 2012 when “Beasts of the Southern Wild” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. “Beasts” and eight other films were nominated for Best Picture“Amour,” Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” “Django Unchained,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Zero Dark Thirty” — but the race had focused down to “Lincoln” and “Argo” as the Oscars approached. Why Did Kathryn Bigelow Not Get An Oscar Nomination For Best Director For Zero Dark Thirty?

By Quora, Contributor

Over the last few weeks there have been a lot of strong opinions among the media and around the blogosphere about why Kathryn Bigelow did not get an Oscar nomination for Best Director for her work on Zero Dark Thirty. Most of these conspiracy theories focus solely on the controversy regarding the film having a possible pro-torture stance. The controversy likely played a part in her snub, but I believe there are also other reasons. …read more

‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Ban? Oscar-Nominated Film Reportedly Blocked ‘Unofficially’ In Pakistan

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Zero Dark Thirty” might be a top Oscar contender in the United States, but in Pakistan the movie has been all but erased from existence.

“Zero Dark Thirty” has been “unofficially” banned in Pakistan, according to NBC News. The film hasn’t been officially released, the Pakistani government has not commented on it and, “technically, no one in Pakistan is supposed to have ever seen the movie,” NBC reporter Waj S. Khan writes.

Pakistan is the backdrop for the film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring Jessica Chastain, about the hunt for and death of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad. It details an intricate timeline from 2003 through May 2, 2011, the day the terrorist leader was found hiding in Pakistan and killed by Navy SEAL Team 6.
