Gina Carano is Taking Avengelyne to the Big Screen

MMA fighter turned actress Gina Carano is set to play the eponymous character in the big screen adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s comic book series Avengelyne.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carano and Liefeld are “re-conceiving” and “rebuilding” the title as a vehicle for the actress, and the proposed film(s) will carry a tone akin to Kate Beckinsale’s pulpy Underworld franchise. For those unfamiliar with the Image comic book series, it centers around a fallen angel who now fights demons on Earth using her considerable super strength.

Carano and Liefeld were at Comic-Con last week to promote a relaunch of the series, and according to THR the search is now on for a writer or writer-director for the movie adaptation.

‘The Butler’ Dispute Moves Forward As MPAA Approves Weinstein Company’s Use Of ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The Weinstein Company and Warner Bros.’ dispute over “The Butler” added another wrinkle late on Friday as the MPAA approved the former’s use of the title “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” for the upcoming film.

The Wrap appeared to break the news, followed closely by THR and Deadline.com. All industry publications had been following the story — which sent Harvey Weinstein himself to the airwaves to put pressure on Warner Bros. and the MPAA — for the duration of the conflict. The dispute centered on Warner Bros.’ claim that a 1916 short film of the same name should be enough to prohibit TWC from using the words “The Butler” in the title for a new movie (more information on the original complaints and rulings below.)

Friday’s news was touted as a victory by The Weinstein Company, which had previously been banned from using the words “The Butler” in any way in the film’s title. The MPAA reversal (of sorts) comes with some restrictions: “All letters of all words in the title must be in the same size and prominence as the size and prominence of the word ‘butler,’ except if the name ‘Lee Daniels’ is used int he title, then ‘Lee Daniels’ must be of a size at least 75 percent and of equal prominence to the word ‘butler.'”

“This is the network that has shows about teen pregnancy. They’ll stick by a show that allows you to abandon a child, but a kid dies by accident doing what he does for a living [mudding] and they cancel the show?” he told to THR in the wake of MTV‘s decision to cancel “Buckwild.” “There’s something that smells of s— here on every level.”

‘Buckwild’ Canceled By MTV During Season 2 Following Shain Gandee’s Death (REPORT)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

MTV has canceled new reality series “Buckwild,” TMZ reports. The news comes eight days after cast member Shain Gandee died, halting production on Season 2.

A source close to the show reportedly confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter, which noted, “After several days spent weighing the implications of moving forward with the reality show, MTV brass ultimately decided it would be imprudent to do so. The move — a bid to avoid any potential controversy as well as a recognition that Gandee was the show’s breakout star — comes after a heavily hyped and ultimately successful first season.”

According to THR‘s source, “internal conversations were had on the day of Gandee’s death about potentially ‘softening’ the show, which has focused on such behavior as off-roading, tire roll-downs and hard partying. But doing so likely would prove incongruous with the show’s brand — and potentially turn off viewers in the process.”

Justin Lin Won't Direct Fast & Furious 7

It was announced today that Justin Lin is finally stepping down from the Fast & Furious franchise and will no longer be directing Fast 7.

According to THR, the filmmaker informed Universal late Wednesday that he wouldn’t be returning for the latest installment of the popular action series. Lin has been the studio’s go-to director for the films ever since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Lin’s departure reportedly has nothing to do with creative differences, but rather time issues. With Universal putting The Fast and the Furious 7 on the fast track to release next year and shoot this summer, Lin would have to prep for filming while simultaneously continuing post-production on Fast & Furious 6, which is slated for a May 24 release.

Is Jack the Giant Slayer This Year's John Carter?

Director Bryan Singer’s fairy tale film Jack the Giant Slayer reportedly stands to lose anywhere between $120-140 million for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.

“That would put the film midway between Universal’s 2012 flop Battleship and Disney’s John Carter in terms of financial damage,” reports THR. “Jack likely will top out at $65 million domestically and about $140 million internationally, resulting in a global total of not much more than $200 million. That’s not enough to cover the film’s price tag, which includes a production budget near $200 million and a worldwide marketing spend north of $100 million.”

Justin Timberlake, Buzz Bissinger And The Helpful Deadline

By Leor Galil, Contributor

Forbes staff writer Dorothy Pomerantz recently took a look at the alleged wheeling and dealing behind the new chart-topping Justin Timberlake album, The 20/20 Experience. As Pomerantz wrote The Hollywood Reporter broke down the pop star’s 2009 deal with Live Nation, a touring contract reportedly worth about $20 million. In the well-researched story THR said Live Nation bears a lot of responsibility for the recent release of The 20/20 Experience as the entertainment juggernaut may have feared it could have taken years for Timberlake to have any interest in releasing a new album and touring to support it: Says one high-ranking source, “There is a due date by which you have to start touring — at some point, [Live Nation] has to call in the loan.” …read more

Sutherland Joins Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii

The 3D disaster movie Pompeii from Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson will see 24’s Kiefer Sutherland play its villainous Roman senator.

Set just before one of history’s most notable volcanic eruptions in 79 A. D., the story will use the disaster as the film’s backdrop and, no doubt, for numerous CGI effects in the same vein as 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow.

The James Franco-led “Oz” brought in $24.1 million, a total which THR reports puts the film on pace for a weekend gross in the range of $69 to $74 million, with some sources expecting totals to reach $80 million. “Oz,” which received a CinemaScore of B+ from moviegoers, had a production budget of $215 million.
