Rocketeer/Spirit Crossover Announced

IDW launched their mega panel with the introductions of Dirk Wood, Chris Ryall, Greg Goldstein, John Barber, Mike Johnson, Scott Dunbier, and Mark Waid.

The panel kicked off in a huge way, as IDW announced an upcoming crossover between Rocketeer and The Spirit, written by Mark Waid and drawn by Paul Smith, set for July 2013. It will run four issues and be subtitled “Pulp Friction.”

Waid said Commissioner Dolan, Denny, and Ellen will be making a trip out to California to investigate a crime, where they will meet Cliff, Betty, and the rest of the Rocketeer gang. Waid said it’ll be fun to watch what happens when Cliff meets Ellen, Dolan meets Betty, etc. He also noted that at this point in the Spirit’s career, it’s still very early, which actually makes Cliff the more experienced crime fighter.

IDW Gives G.I. Joe the Deluxe Treatment

IDW took the reins of the G.I. Joe comic book franchise several years ago. In addition to creating an entirely new Joe universe through books like G.I. Joe and G.I. Joe: Cobra, the publisher has focused plenty of attention to collecting classic G.I. Joe stories from the Marvel Comics era. Most of those collected editions are aimed at budget-conscious collectors. But with the movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation bringing new attention to the franchise, IDW has decided the time is ripe for more high-end G.I. Joe collections.

Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness #1 Review

By Jesse Schedeen

Is there such a thing as a tie-in project being too integral to a movie? If so, Star Trek: Countdown certainly qualifies. IDW‘s prequel comic to the 2009 Star Trek reboot did a great job of shedding light on Nero’s back-story and the origins of his feud with Spock and the Vulcan Empire. The problem was that too little of that background material made it into the actual film. Nero was a poorly defined enigma unless viewers had the experience of the comic to draw upon.

For better or worse, it doesn’t appear that IDW‘s similarly conceived Star Trek Into Darkness prequel will have the same integral relationship to its source material. Countdown to Darkness reunites some of the gang from Countdown. Roberto Orci and Mike Johnson plotted the series, Johnson scripted it, and David Messina once again illustrates it. In its first issue, Countdown Into Darkness plays out pretty much like any random episode of the old TV series. The Enterprise crew arrive at their latest intergalactic destination, a routine mission develops a complication, and a handful of crew members suddenly find themselves in a pickle. It’s all there, even down to a botched mission where our heroes are joined by one random Red Shirt.
