This Time, Iron Man Will Crush Spidey

By Tim Beyers, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

For all his success, Robert Downey Jr., as Iron Man, has never proven to be as popular as either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, both of whom have played Spider-Man on the big screen. All that could change when Iron Man 3 debuts on May 3.

The film could follow in the footsteps of Marvel’s The Avengers, and bring Walt Disney another billion-dollar box office, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova in the following video.

Sony‘s best performance from a Spidey film came in 2007, when Sam Raimi’s  Spider-Man 3 earned $90.9 million worldwide, according to data supplied by Box Office Mojo.

Do you agree that Iron Man 3 will top that total? Please watch, and then leave a comment to let us know what you think of Disney’s plans to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Oz: The Great and Powerful" Tops $150 Million Worldwide in Debut Weekend

By Dan Carroll, The Motley Fool

Disney‘s Oz: The Great and Powerful scored the top spot in weekend box office sales by a mile, easily outpacing its nearest competitors with domestic revenue of more than $80 million, according to data compiled by Rentrak. Oz pulled in around $150 million worldwide in its debut weekend in theaters, according to data released by media measurement company Rentrak.

Disney’s take on the Wizard of Oz scored a box office hit after a strong promotional campaign and a budget that Box Office Mojo puts at more than $200 million. The film, a prequel to the original classic that tells the story of the titular wizard in the land of Oz, delivered a punch for the movie industry after a lackluster start to the year. Box office sales have fallen 12.5% year-over-year so far in 2013, a Hollywood.com analyst told CBS News.

Jack the Giant Slayer, the folk story retelling from Time Warner subsidiary Warner Brothers, managed to squeeze out $10 million in domestic sales to take the distant runner-up spot in its second weekend in theaters. (The previous weekend, when Jack ranked No. 1, it tallied $27 million at the box office.) Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, another folk story reimagining from Viacom subsidiary Paramount Pictures, ranked third internationally with weekend revenue of $11.4 million in the most recent weekend.

Fantasy adventure film Jack the Giant Slayer — distributed by Time Warner subsidiary Warner Brothers — took the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office this past weekend, according to data released by media management firm Rentrak. The film, making its debut in theaters, recorded just more than $28 million in domestic revenue.

Jack also ranked first overall in total worldwide sales, pulling in another $13.7 million overseas to bring its weekend cumulative total to $41.7 million.

A Good Day to Die Hard, the fifth installment of the Die Hard action series, topped the international box office with $18.3 million this past weekend. The Hobbit Passes Two LOTR Movies

Say what you will about Peter Jackson‘s first installment of The Hobbit, but there’s no denying that the Lord of the Rings director’s latest trip to Middle-earth has been a box office knockout. That was made even clearer this week when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey surpassed two of its predecessors: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Since its debut on December 14, The Hobbit has earned $939,859,000 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, with foreign figures (69%) putting it over the top. Domestically, however, the prequel film is up to $293.2 million, which is still short of all three The Lord of the Rings movies.
