IGN Visits NASA for G.I. Joe: Retaliation

IGN visited the top secret set of G.I. Joe: Retaliation way back in October 2011. With the sequel’s release now just weeks away, we can finally reveal more about what we saw being filmed — and where.

We’d been sworn to to keep the nature of the facility used for filming a secret. But now we can finally reveal that the Joe sequel was partially shot inside a NASA facility outside New Orleans. A number of scenes for the sequel were shot on these converted soundstages, including the duel between Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) in the mountain lair of the Blind Master (RZA), the ninja who mentored them in their youth.

G.I. Joe 2's Adrianne Palicki Talks Lady Jaye

Adrianna Palicki will soon burst onto the silver screen as Lady Jaye in the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation, teaming alongside Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis in the film.

In a recent interview with EW, Palicki explained her physical preparation for the role, which included a SEAL-approved workout regimen. “Harry Humphries is a retired SEAL, so… he brought his whole SEAL team to train us, and they’re actually in the movie with us, guiding us, which was the most nerve-racking part because if you mess up, you know they’re going to be pulling you aside and scaring you.

“Thankfully I love the character and she’s very well-written,” Palicki continued. “She’s a tough girl. She’s got a little bit of a chip on her shoulder. She’s like the only chick around all these guys so she kind of has to hold her own. She’s the intelligence in the group; she’s the weapon specialist. So there’s a lot to carry with that.”

Ninja Showdown, G.I. Joe Style

Funny thing — I coulda sworn Hasbro was promoting G.I. Joe: Retaliation toys at last year’s Toy Fair…

I jest. Of course the toy company had product on display for the new movie at the 2012 convention, because back then the Paramount sequel was still slated for release that year. Of course, the film was eventually pushed to this spring, which was surely something of a nightmare for Hasbro. Still, if you’re a Joe fan, there are plenty of ways to spend your money here. Check out some images below of the Hasbro line-up, which goes beyond movie toys to more traditional G.I. Joe fare as well, while also expanding into the KRE-O line of building blocks…

Check out the full gallery of Hasbro’s G.I. Joe images here.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation – Ninjas in 3D

We got to chat this week with G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura about the forthcoming sequel, which was abruptly shifted from its original summer 2012 release to March 29, 2013 in order to convert the film to 3D. Such a radical move naturally got the tongues of the media and fanboys alike wagging that there must be something wrong with the movie given such a last-minute change.

On the Set of G.I. Joe: Retaliation

IGN was one of the media outlets lucky enough to visit the set of G.I. Joe: Retaliation way back in October 2011. With the sequel’s release now two months away, we can finally share with you a bit of what we saw. Our full set visit will run closer to the film’s March 29 opening.

The nature of the facility used for filming outside New Orleans must remain a secret (like Uncle Sam-level secret). A number of scenes for the sequel were shot on these converted soundstages, including a scene that will soon be seen by filmgoers as part of Paramount’s pre-release promotional push for G.I. Joe: Retaliation. There will be a four-minute preview of the film attached to worldwide IMAX, RealD and digital 3D showings of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters on January 24. The preview will run throughout the entirety of Hansel & Gretel’s theatrical engagement.

New G.I. Joe 2 Cut Won't Feature More Duke

During his TCA panel for Zero Hour, executive producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura offered an update on the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which last year was pushed at the last minute to a 2013 release in order to allow for a 3D conversion and reshoots.

The first cut of the action sequel was originally slated for a June 2012 release. However, di Bonaventura insists that the film is more or less the same a year later. “It’s not much different,” he told Crave. “Literally, we shot for three extra days. We just added sort of explanation in what we did afterwards.”
