The Story Of The Greatest Game Ever Played In America That You Have Probably Never Heard Of

By Bobby McMahon, Contributor

The first MLS Cup Final in 1996 was a dramatic affair that saw D.C. United recover from a late two-goal deficit against the Los Angeles Galaxy to win through Eddie Pope’s golden goal in overtime. Yet the drama at Foxborough Stadium that day could not come close to emulating the ‘Greatest Soccer Final Played on American Soil’ — the first continental professional final held between franchises from those two cities to crown the 1967 United Soccer Association champion. Nearly 18,000 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum witnessed 11 goals, two hat-tricks, three penalty kicks, last-minute equalizers in normal and extra-time, one sending off, countless punch-ups and a heartbreaking golden own goal in sudden-death overtime.  Ian Thomson is a former Wall Street reporter and freelance soccer journalist based in Morgantown, West Virginia. In his first book “Summer Of ’67” Ian tells the story of that final and the 12 teams that arrived in North America from around the globe to compete in the first United Soccer Association. The twelve teams were adopted by cities across North America and went through name changes. Cagliari of Italy became the Chicago Mustangs, Wolves and Sunderland from England played as the Los Angeles Wolves and the Vancouver Royal Canadians. Stoke City became the Cleveland Stokers, Bangu from Brazil the Houston Stars and Dundee United offered a Texas rivalry as the Dallas Tornado. Toronto City was Hibernian from Scotland, C.A. Cerro of Uruguay the New York Skyliners  and the Netherlands side ADO Den Haag took temporary possession of the mouthful that was the San Francisco Golden Gate Gales. Rounding out the 12 teams was Glentoran of Northern Ireland as the Detroit Cougars, Shamrock Rovers from the Republic not surprisingly lined up as the  Boston Rovers and Aberdeen became the Washington Whips. Ian was kind enough to take time to answer some of my questions. Q What drew you to this specific subject? A I’d heard many years ago that my team, Aberdeen from Scotland, had played as the Washington Whips in some far-flung American tournament before I was born. I never thought too much about it until I attended my first D.C. United game at RFK Stadium last year. Shortly afterward, I interviewed Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark for a college soccer story. Bobby was Aberdeen’s goalkeeper during the 1967 tour. It struck me that the United Soccer Association was a key milestone in the timeline of U.S. soccer history that remains largely obscure. Q As you did your research what level of awareness did you find 0f the 1967 United Soccer Association on both sides of the Atlantic? Or was it case that Pele signing for the Cosmos years later was the starting point for most?  A It’s funny, I was talking to Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie after his team’s 1-0 win at RFK Stadium in June. Rennie is an Aberdeen fan, yet he had no idea that The Dons had played in that venue. Sunderland’s club historian had written a …read more

Another Fine 24 Hours of LeMons Idea: Road-Racing ’79 Bonneville Donk!

By Murilee Martin

Another Fine 24 Hours of LeMons Idea: Road-Racing '79 Bonneville Donk!

With all the recent attention paid to LeMons Legend Speedycop‘s recent creations—say, the road-racing ’56 Cessna 310 or the road-racing Viking pop-up trailer—it’s important to remember that Speedycop and the Gang of Outlaws have been building amazing race cars for more than four years, and some newcomers to the series may not know about one of our all-time favorites: a 1979 Pontiac Bonneville with the full Donk treatment.

A proper Oakland-style donk should be a full-size GM product with large-diameter wheels, low-profile tires, and serious suspension lift. Speedycop had been wanting to build a donked LeMons racer for a couple of years, and he finally surprised everyone by showing up with this bright yellow Pontiac at the 2011 Capitol Offense race in West Virginia.

Everyone who saw this car backed away in awe, and those who would soon be sharing a road-course track with it wondered what it would be like on the track.

Your LeMons correspondent (unwisely) volunteered to take the SpeedyDonk out for a few laps on the Summit Point track, and the car proved to be a jouncy, bouncy, tippy, tire-lifting handful.

With a Malaise Era 301-cubic-inch Pontiac V-8 under the hood and an apartment-building-esque center of gravity, the Donk wasn’t blisteringly quick, but it had enough power to pass other cars here and there.

By the time the 2011 Boston Tow Party and Overhead Cam-Bake rolled around, the Gang of Outlaws had learned to work with the Donk’s many handling quirks.

Imagine seeing this in your rear-view mirror!

The Donk proved to be quite reliable, and the Outlaws managed to keep the shiny side up.

Would you believe 16th place (out of 52 entries) for the Donk? It’s true! This resulted in the first of many Speedycop and the Gang of Outlaws Index of Effluency trophies.

Florida Mom Gets 20 Years For Firing Warning Shot

By Breaking News

Florida SC Florida Mom Gets 20 Years For Firing Warning Shot

In 2012, a Florida mother of three received a 20-years prison sentence for firing a warning shot into the ceiling to deter her ex-husband from attacking her.

The case is receiving renewed media attention after the Zimmerman verdict, because Marissa Alexander pled self-defense under Florida’s stand your ground law. She claims that her ex-husband attacked her and made her fear for her life. She had already taken out a protective order against him after he had assaulted her, including one incident that put her in hospital. She had never been in trouble with the law before her arrest.

According to sworn depositions, Alexander was living at her mother’s house after separating from her husband Rico Gray. He came to the house and “flew into a jealous rage after discovering, while poking through her cellphone, that she had sent pictures of their newborn daughter to her first husband,” according to Reason. Alexander was in the bathroom at the time.

Gray tried to force the door and then blocked her exit when she tried to leave. “I was like forcing her back with my body,” he admitted in his sworn deposition. He is 7 inches taller and outweighs her by 100 pounds, according to Reason. He admitted that he told her “if she ever cheated on me I would kill her.”

She pushed past him and ran to get her gun from her car, then returned to the house and told Gray to leave. She says she then fired a warning shot into the ceiling, and Gray initially admitted that was true. “The gun was never pointed at me,” he said in his sworn depostion. “She just didn’t want me to put my hands on her anymore, so she did what she feel like she have to do to make sure she wouldn’t get hurt.”

Boy Scouts' Jamboree should include those barred due to BMI restrictions, experts say

By Joshua Rhett Miller

The Boy Scouts of America’s new fitness standards for participating in the organization’s annual Jamboree are so rigorous they would not just exclude chubby tenderfoots — they would even bar many NFL players.

All Scouts were required to have a physical exam in advance of the Jamboree and those with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater were barred from participating at this year’s gathering, which features strenuous activities such as hiking, rock climbing, rappelling and biking. Scouts with BMIs between 32 and 39.9 had to provide additional health information to take on the 1,000-plus acre Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia. But critics told FoxNews.com excluding obese Boy Scouts goes against the spirit of the organization.

Patricia Bannon, a registered dietician and author of “Eat Right When Time Is Tight,” told FoxNews.com she found no issue with the guidelines, but said those who were excluded from the fitness competition should still be allowed to participate in some modified way.

“I’m sure they put a lot of thought into this and consulted with medical experts,” Bannon said. “But a BMI of 39.9 or higher is really high. The obesity rating for BMI is actually 30 or greater and in comparing them to NFL players, those NFL players are very likely to have very high muscle mass. And since BMI is a calculation of weight to height, it’s not a very good indicator for people who are athletes. These children with 39.9 or higher BMIs are probably not coming from a high muscle density.”

But severely overweight and obese Scouts should still be able to participate in some “altered” kind of competition if they are deemed unfit for the Jamboree, Bannon said.

“Unfortunately it still does exclude children due to their weight, but I’m sure they’re looking at their health and potential negative health consequences,” she said. “But maybe they could walk [the course] or do what they can and not be excluded. Anything that the Boy Scouts could do to compensate for the stigma of being excluded would be great.”

The Council on Size & Weight Discrimination said it “deplores” the Boys Scouts decision, calling it “an unfair and discriminatory policy.”

“There are boy scouts who are heavier than average but extremely fit and capable of strenuous physical activity. At the same time, it is patently absurd to assume that just because a boy is thin, that means he is capable of a three-mile hike up a mountain,” the group said in a statement.

The average NFL player would qualify for the 10-day competition, but by no means would the entire league. The average BMI for an NFL player for the 2012 season was 31.35, according to SportingCharts.com, well above the normal range of 18.5-24.9 as set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At 45.64, Michael Jasper of the New York Giants had the highest BMI last season, the website reported. The league’s average nose tackle – with a BMI of 40.50 – would also be ineligible for the Boy Scout’s …read more

Scouting leaders focused on Jamboree, not gay vote

Two months after a vote that accepted openly gay boys as Scouts, officials for the Boy Scouts of America say they’ve put the issue aside and are focused on their 10-day national Jamboree.

Thousands of Scouts and their leaders began arriving Monday in southern West Virginia.

Months of divisive debate led to May’s vote by the BSA’s National Council. The policy change is effective next January.

Boy Scouts chief executive Wayne Brock says that despite the vote, he sees no changes in the way the Jamboree will be conducted.

Rich Ferraro of GLAAD says the media watchdog group is continuing to work toward ending the Scouts’ ban on gay adults. Ferraro says the group formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has no planned events surrounding the Jamboree.

Scout leaders also say they’re unaware of any scheduled protests.

New health requirements keeping obese Boy Scouts out of national Jamboree

This year’s Boy Scouts of America’s national Jamboree is being billed as the most physically demanding in its history: There’s rock climbing, rappelling, whitewater rafting and biking. And Scouts will go about the sprawling, hilly landscape the old-fashioned way — on foot.

Thousands of Scouts gather for 10 days starting Monday at a new location in West Virginia. Officials designed the 1,000-plus acre Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve to take advantage of the Mountain State’s natural assets, and they also put into place new physical fitness requirements that eliminated morbidly obese Scouts from participating.

“Part of the design in building this site was to address the need for physical fitness in our youth, which of course is a longstanding component of Scouting,” said Dan McCarthy, director of the BSA’s Summit Group. “We saw this as an opportunity to integrate some new challenges … so we deliberately spread the site to enable us to encourage Scouts and basically require Scouts to move about the site by foot.”

This year, 30,000 Scouts ages 12 to 20 and their leaders were required to meet a threshold for body mass index and other health factors before being allowed to participate. Jamboree applicants with a BMI — a measure of body fat determined through height and weight — of 40 or higher were deemed ineligible. Those who fell between 32 and 39.9 faced providing additional health information to Jamboree medical staff.

Nationally, about 17 percent of children ages 2 to 19 are considered obese — triple the rate from a generation earlier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We required a level of fitness in order to come to the Jamboree that we haven’t required before,” McCarthy said. “And that has motivated an enormous return in terms of both kids and adults getting serious about improving their health.”

Soon, the Scouts will know why. Besides offering a whole lot of fun, dozens of venues will test their physical skills and fitness. At some point during the Jamboree, every participating Scout will be asked to take a 3-mile trek up a mountain.

Their reward: A barbecue waiting at the top.

“We certainly want to get the Scouts outdoors, challenge them and have a healthy lifestyle,” said Gary Hartley, the Summit’s director of community and governmental relations. “We talk about the three C’s as kind of the pillars, and that is cardio, character and citizenship. We have all of those embodied here.”

From 1981 to 2010, the Jamboree was held every four years in Fort A.P. Hill, Va. That gathering on a flatter, borrowed Army base limited the size and scope of the Jamboree’s operations.

In 2009, southern West Virginia was chosen out of 80 proposals from 28 states as the Jamboree’s new home. Along with being the permanent home of the national Jamboree, whose theme is “Go Big, Get Wild,” the Summit will serve as one of four high-adventure camps for the Scouts and will host the 2019 World Jamboree.

While Scouts will be roughing it outdoors, Hartley said walking won’t be that …read more

Boy Scout Jamboree takes health-conscious turn

The new home of the Boy Scouts of America’s national Jamboree in West Virginia offers miles of bike trails, zip lines, rock climbing and Olympic-size pools. And to get there from base camp, Scouts must walk.

Exercise is part of the organization’s focus on combating obesity, and that includes the 10-day Jamboree that starts Monday.

This year, 30,000 participants ages 12 to 20 and their leaders were required to meet a threshold for body mass index and other health factors before being allowed to participate.

It’s the first time the Jamboree is being held in West Virginia after nearly three decades at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia.

Boy Scouts’ Summit Group director Dan McCarthy says the site was designed for Scouts to walk to various venues.

New “conservative” Lobbying Push For Gay Marriage

By Breaking News

Gay Marriage SC New conservative lobbying push for gay marriage

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A national group of prominent GOP donors that supports gay marriage is pouring new money into lobbying efforts to get Republican lawmakers to vote to make it legal.

American Unity PAC was formed last year to lend financial support to Republicans who bucked the party’s longstanding opposition to gay marriage. Its founders are launching a new lobbying organization, American Unity Fund, and already have spent more than $250,000 in Minnesota, where the Legislature could vote on the issue as early as next week.

The group has spent $500,000 on lobbying since last month, including efforts in Rhode Island, Delaware, Indiana, West Virginia and Utah.

Billionaire hedge fund manager and Republican donor Paul Singer launched American Unity PAC. The lobbying effort is the next phase as the push for gay marriage spreads to more states, spokesman Jeff Cook-McCormac told The Associated Press.

“What you have is this network of influential Republicans who really want to see the party embrace the freedom to marry, and believe it’s not only the right thing for the country but also good politics,” Cook-McCormac said.

Online support grows for North Dakota newscaster suspended for salty start

A North Dakota newscaster who uttered a profanity to begin is debut as anchor has been suspended, but online support for the young newsman is growing as the clip goes viral.

A.J. Clemente made his debut as co-anchor for Bismarck NBC affiliate KFYR on Sunday, but the University of West Virginia graduate was seemingly unaware his microphone was on as colleague Van Tieu began the newscast.

“F—— s—,” Clemente said seconds after Tieu kicked off the broadcast and mumbled incoherently. He later stammered through introducing himself at the station.

“Ummm, thanks Van, I’m very excited,” he said. “I graduated from West Virginia University and I’m used to, um, you know, from being, from in the East Coast.”

Clemente then reports on a fatal ATV crash in Williams County. He later summarized his performance on Twitter.

“That couldn’t have gone any worse!” he wrote.

Clemente did not join Tieu for the following newscast and has been suspended, according to a post on the station’s Facebook page.

“He did not realize his microphone was on, but still, that’s no excuse,” said KFYR-TV news director Monica Hannan. “We train our reporters to always assume that any microphone is live at any time. Unfortunately, that was not enough in this case. We can’t take back what was said. The person involved has been suspended until we resolve the situation. All we can do at this point is ask for your forgiveness, and I can offer my personal assurance that I will do my best to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again under my watch.”

Clemente, who briefly erased his Twitter account late Sunday, later thanked viewers for supporting him through the “tough” debut.

“I’ll try my hardest to come back better and learn from this,” he wrote.

Many fans on the station’s Facebook page, meanwhile, have asked management not to fire the young newscaster.

“While this is definitely spreading across the country, please consider not firing him,” one posting read. “The kid screwed up big time, but he shouldn’t have to have his early career ruined because of it, especially after moving all the way to North Dakota from West Virginia.”

Another user wrote: “I really don’t think suspension is going to help anything. The kid is super green, and he needs practice more than anything. If you yank him off the air immediately, that’s going to create a huge obstacle for him to climb. You hired him. He needs to know he has the support of his station when he makes a mistake. Not to have the carpet pulled out beneath him. Get him back on the air, so he can learn from this and get better.”

Student reportedly arrested, suspended after argument with teacher over NRA shirt

An eighth-grade student in West Virginia was reportedly arrested and suspended last week after getting into an argument with his teacher about a National Rifle Association T-shirt he wore to school.

WOWK-TV reports that Jared Marcum faces charges of obstruction and disturbing the education process for refusing to change the shirt, which shows a rifle and the slogan, “protect your right.”

Jared told the station the he was punished by officials at Logan Middle School after arguing about the shirt with his teacher, who reportedly objected to the image of the gun on the shirt.

“What they’re doing is trying to take away my rights, my freedom of speech and my Second Amendment,” Jared told the station.

Jared’s father, Allen Lardieri, told WOWK-TV he is upset his son was briefly jailed for something he believes was blown out of proportion.

“I don’t see how anybody would have an issue with a hunting rifle and NRA put on a T-shirt, especially when policy doesn’t forbid it,” Lardieri told the station.

A Logan County School District official refused a request for comment from WOWK-TV, but police in Logan confirmed Jared’s arrest last Thursday.

On the first day of Jared’s suspension, some of his friends reportedly wore shirts displaying images of firearms and at least one was told by an educator to change their attire, according to the report.

Benjamin White, an attorney handling Jared’s case, told the station he is working on getting the charges dropped and plans to file a federal or civil lawsuit.

Grand jury to be seated in Ohio football rape case

A grand jury about to be seated in eastern Ohio will investigate whether other laws were broken in the case of a 16-year-old girl raped by two high school football players last year.

Nothing is off the table for the Jefferson County panel expected to be selected Monday in Steubenville, said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

“The grand jury is a very good investigative tool as well as a very deliberative body,” DeWine said. It will investigate everything that happened before and after the rape, he said.

Some of the outstanding questions in the case include whether anyone knew about the rape early on but didn’t report it and how dozens of teens attending a party that preceded the attack got ahold of beer and other alcohol.

DeWine has also previously confirmed that the grand jury will look at allegations of another rape the previous April.

A judge last month convicted the two football players of penetrating the West Virginia girl with their fingers after an alcohol-fueled party, once in a moving car and later in the basement of a house.

Ma’Lik Richmond, 16, was sentenced to at least a year in the state juvenile detention system, minus about two months he spent in jail before the trial.

Trent Mays, 17, was sentenced to at least two years in juvenile detention because he was also convicted of photographing the underage girl naked.

One of the reasons DeWine wanted a grand jury is because, even though the teens were arrested within days of the August attack, charges of a cover-up have dogged the case.

Part of that related to inaccurate reports early on that the local prosecutor’s son, who plays on the football team, was involved in the attack. The prosecutor took herself off the case and DeWine’s office stepped in.

The influence of the Big Red football team on community judgment was also questioned, with the coach and district criticized for allowing boys who witnessed the attack to continue playing that fall.

Testimony during the March trial indicated head football coach Reno Saccoccia may have been aware of the rape allegation early on. The coach knew what

America’s Fattest Cities: 24/7 Wall St.

By The Huffington Post News Editors

24/7 Wall St.:

Obesity may be the most closely followed health care issue in the United States. The rate of obesity has increased dramatically in the past two decades, growing from 13% in 1960 to 34% nationally. As a result, costs associated with treating obesity have exploded. Obesity was estimated to cost $190 billion annually in additional medical expenses, or more than 20% of health care spending, and double earlier figures, according to a study published last year in the Journal of Health Economics.

In general, obesity rates remain high in several areas of the country, including much of southern Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and West Virginia, and the shrinking cities of the industrial Rust Belt. Based on data published in the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 11 metropolitan areas with the highest obesity rates. For the second year in a row, McAllen, Texas, had the highest obesity rate and Boulder, Colo. had the lowest.

Suspicious package containing explosive material sent to Arizona Sheriff Arpaio

Authorities are investigating an explosive device addressed to Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed “toughest sheriff in America” known for his tough treatment of jail inmates and cracking down on illegal immigrants.

The device intercepted in Flagstaff late Thursday was in a package addressed to Arpaio at his downtown Phoenix office, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

It appeared suspicious, so it was X-rayed and the device was detected. A bomb squad team neutralized the explosive, the statement said.

Arpaio’s chief deputy, Jerry Sheridan, told The Arizona Republic that investigators believe the package was picked up on Thursday at a rural Post Office box. Flagstaff is about 140 miles north of Phoenix.

Following the killing of a West Virginia sheriff last week, Arpaio said elected law enforcement officials across the nation seem to be targeted.

A national hero to conservatives on immigration issues, Arpaio himself has been the target of numerous threats. That prompted the need for a security detail for the lawman also known for dressing jail inmates in pink underwear and making them sleep in tents in the heat of the Arizona desert.

A campaign to recall Arpaio began just weeks after he started his sixth term in January.

Critics contend Arpaio should be ousted because his office failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crimes cases, allegedly racially profiled Latinos in its trademark immigration patrols and has cost the county $25 million in legal settlements over treatment in county jails.

Arpaio has denied that his deputies racially profiled Latinos in traffic patrols targeting illegal immigration. His office has moved to clear up the sex-crime cases and moved to prevent the problem from happening again, he said.
