5 Financial Decisions That Sound Smart but Are Really Dumb

By U.S. News

Norma Yaeger, 83, of Encino, Calif., thought she was making a smart financial decision last fall, when, after pulling into a Ralph’s supermarket, she impulsively hired two men to fix her car.

“Two nice gentlemen came over to me and look at my fender, which was badly scratched. They said that they had a compound that will remove the scratches and restore the paint,” Yaeger says.
They would fix it, for just $50.

Yaeger isn’t a rube — she was, in fact, the first female stockbroker to work at the New York Stock Exchange (and recently wrote an autobiography, “Breaking Down the Walls”). She also served as president of two stock brokerage firms. The men who approached her seemed honest, and Yaeger was self-conscious about her fender. She paid the $50, a snap decision that seemed perfectly reasonable.

Instead — and you knew this was coming — when she returned from grocery shopping, her car fender hadn’t improved. In fact, it looked far worse. Yaeger drove to a mechanic and was told that it would take several days and $1,000 to fix her car.”The worst part was that I had to tell my husband about this embarrassing story,” Yaeger says.

[See: 12 Money Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes.]

Most people have made a financial mistake that seemed sensible at the time, but in hindsight turned out to be pretty stupid. With that in mind, here are some thoughts from a slew of personal finance experts on five financial decisions that sound smart but are likely a waste of money.

The Mistake: Buying something because it is interest-free for awhile.

Why It Can Seem Smart. It’s tempting to buy something with a zero-interest window, such as a “90-day, same-as-cash” offer, in which you’re charged no interest if you pay for the product within 90 days.

Why It May Be Stupid. Many people don’t end up saving the money or putting it aside when they get it, “and they end up paying accumulated interest at a high rate plus compounding interest on the balance going forward,” says Kelley Long, a Chicago-based certified public accountant.

She says consumers make such mistakes when they open a store credit card to get a 15 percent discount, for example, but then carry a 22 percent balance. Paying for things with a rewards credit card to earn frequent flier miles can also be a mistake if you’re not paying off the card in full each month. “The interest expenses end up far outweighing the price of an airline ticket,” Long says.

The Mistake: Buying long-term care insurance when you’re broke.

Why It Can Seem Smart. Who wouldn’t want long-term care insurance? It helps pay for basic activities that people need to do on a daily basis, …read more

Lucio & Susan Co's Puregold Taps Into Middle Class Shopping Spree

By Naazneen Karmali, Forbes Staff

Lucio and Susan Co, a husband-and-wife team, have struck gold with their Puregold Price Club, a chain of over 150 hypermarkets, supermarkets and discount stores. Starting with one store in 1998, the Cos have expanded at a rapid pace, lately through acquisitions, to build Puregold into the country’s second-largest retailer, after Henry Sy’s SM group. Contrary to what its name suggests, a typical Puregold outlet stocks not fancy goods but a range of cheap merchandise aimed at a rising population of middle-class shoppers and owners of neighborhood convenience stores, known as sari-sari stores. (It claims to have over 230,000 of them as its customers.) Since 2010 the retailer’s revenues have doubled to $1.3 billion with net profits increasing fivefold to $65 million. Lucio’s retailing background is linked to running duty-free airport shops, including at Clark International Airport, a former American air force base northwest of Manila. With Puregold the Cos have earned both respectability and fabulous riches. Since 2011, when they took the company public, its shares have soared threefold. “Puregold is the country’s only pure play retail company, and it’s on an aggressive growth trajectory. Investors like that,” says Lauro Baja, country head of Philippines, which was a lead manager in its IPO. Puregold’s meteoric rise is linked to a domestic consumption boom that has been the mainstay of the Philippines’ growth story. If consumer confidence remains upbeat, the retail market is expected to grow to $75 billion by 2017. Other tycoons are lining up to cash in on the middle-class shopping spree. Recently, Land, Jaime Zobel de Ayala’s (No. 6) property unit, announced it was partnering with Puregold in a new joint venture to operate “midmarket” supermarkets. The Ayala firm last year teamed up with Bienvenido Tantoco Sr. (No. 40) to bring Japanese convenience store chain FamilyMart to the Philippines. John Gokongwei Jr. (No. 5) is preparing to list his Robinsons Retail Holdings, a franchisee of Toys “R” Us, among much else. The IPO is expected to be the country’s largest ever. –N.K. …read more

Is It Time For Christians To Abandon The Military?

By Breaking News

Pentagon SC Is It Time for Christians to Abandon the Military?

War is hell. Audie Murphy (1925–1971), one of the most famous and decorated American combat soldiers of World War II, said as much in his book To Hell and Back. While considered a war “hero” and recipient of the Medal of Honor, Murphy was deeply affected by his time in the military:

“His first wife, Wanda Hendrix, stated that he once held her at gunpoint. She witnessed her husband being moved to tears by newsreel footage of German war orphans, guilt-ridden that his war actions might have been the cause of their having no parents.”

We just “celebrated” Abraham Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln is considered to be our nation’s greatest president by liberals and conservatives alike even though he presided over America’s most destructive war.

Historians believe the combined Union and Confederate death toll was around 750,000. The number could be higher if we had Confederate war records, most of which “vanished with their defeat.” Thomas Fleming writes in his new book on the Civil War, A Disease of the Public Mind:

“This much is certain: more soldiers died in the four year struggle than the nation lost in all her previous and future wars combined.”

Weiner’s A Problem But Huma Abedin Is A Bigger Problem

By Breaking News

Huma Abedin SC Weiner’s a Problem but Huma Abedin is a Bigger Problem

On Thursday, Huma Abedin had been flogged across the airwaves by the MSM as being “intelligent,” “delicate,” “brave” and was lauded for “standing by her man.” The degenerate Anthony Weiner had “made a mistake.” Several, actually. Why the deafening cacophony of praise? Because Abedin and the State Department are under Senate investigation and MSM is trying to deflect damaging public scrutiny of Abedin/Hillary/State Department wrongdoing.

If the investigation sinks Abedin, it might also derail a potential presidential run by Hillary Clinton in 2016. Abedin and Hillary are indiscrete in more ways than one.

According to FOX News “Abedin is facing her own troubles — less salacious than her husband’s, but potentially more severe.”

Abedin was Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff at the State Department. The title changed, according to Politico, when Abedin took maternity leave during the summer of 2012. Clinton awarded her bosom buddy of 15 years the title of “special government employee.”

Abedin’s part-time labors on behalf of the State Department netted her an annual salary of $135,000 — $155,000 with benefits. The status change was kept secret. It was unearthed by The Politico in May, 2013. Being a “special government employee” gave Abedin plenty of time with her new family but it also permitted Abedin to pursue other, more lucrative jobs while on the government payroll.

Blake Lively Doesn't Dress For You – and 6 Other Lucky Revelations

By Randy Miller

When Lucky sat down with Blake Lively in Germany (where her husband, Ryan Reynolds, just so happened to be wrapping a film), she arrived wearing scarlet lips and a panama hat. The past few days, however, had been spent in ripped jeans and a baseball cap – a far stretch from the floral Givenchy skirt and grommeted Anthony Vaccarello gown she models within the magazine’s September issue pages.

But Serena van der Woodsen, she is not! “I never think about how other people will respond to the way I dress,” she told Lucky. “Dressing up is all about reflecting how I feel.”

For an explanation of why Blake is just as likely to turn up at the grocery store in L.L.Bean moccasins or crystal heels and more surprising quotes, just keep reading. …read more

Huma Abedin: The Latest “Good Wife”

By Judy B. Lloyd

Huma Abedin Huma Abedin: The Latest “Good Wife”

We’ve seen it all before in real political life. Hilary Clinton stands by her man after he has engaged in oral sex with Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. Huma Mahmood Abedin, now the latest victim, stands by her sexting-addicted husband Anthony Weiner.

It’s like a season of CBS’s epic drama, The Good WifeThe show examines the twists and turns of a political wife who stood by her husband after torrid affairs and a corruption scandal landed him in jail. The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick, is left to pick up the pieces for her family. She re-enters the workforce as a junior associate with a prominent Chicago law firm. Four seasons later, she’s granted partnership in the firm.

The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick remains by her husband’s side. Last season, her law firm defended husband Peter Florrick and his campaign as they dealt with charges of voter fraud after he is elected Governor of Illinois. Alicia defends him along with the senior partners. Its’s ironic under the circumstances. It’s why we keep watching.

This early interview with Julianna Margulies, who plays Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife, paints the picture of the modern day political spouse –

A reporter asked why political women don’t tend to get caught in sex scandals. “Women do not have the time,” Margulies answered. “Dear Lord! Between the kids and the job and the cleaning and the cooking, we just don’t have the time!”

Margulies admits that she, too, tended to look askance at the political wives who stood by their wayward men — until she took the role. “[The part] gave tremendous respect for them — so quick to judge until I stood in Alicia’s shoes,” Margulies said. “It’s not like these are silly little women waiting for their husbands to come home. A lot of them have two degrees and are incredibly accomplished.” Read more here.

Enter Huma Abedin, wife of the Weiner (a.k.a. “Carlos Danger”). She shows a striking resemblance to The Good Wife.

In the real life saga, former Congressman Anthony Weiner, who resigned due to a “sexting” scandal in 2012, appears to be rebuilding trust in his marital relationship after the birth of the couple’s first child. After the bitterness, blame, denial, lying and cheating, Weiner decides to run for Mayor of New York; his fully supportive wife at his side. She is once again betrayed; her husband once again caught again “sexting” under the alias “Carlos Danger”.

More people are watching the Weiner-Abedin union now with greater scrutiny. What most people don’t know is this: The saga gets even juicier.

The man who asked America to define what the meaning of the word “is” is regarding sexual relationships presided over the Weiner-Abedin wedding as officiant. Weiner (a Jew) marries Abedin (a Muslim). And Bill Clinton officiates.

It doesn’t get much better than this.

If the true life episode with Weiner and Abedin wasn’t an episode of The Good Wife before, it is most likely going to play a role now.

Get Ready For The All-Hail-Hillary Movies

By Breaking News

Hillary Clinton speech 9 SC Get Ready for the All Hail Hillary Movies

I wasn’t surprised to learn that sometime before the 2016 election, NBC will be releasing a four-hour miniseries about Hillary Clinton starring Academy Award nominee Diane Lane. What did surprise me was that the series will cover none of her life before the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which took place five years into her husband’s second term as president and when Hillary was already 51 years old. It’s as if her first half-century will be airbrushed away, along with the many scandals that dogged her in those decades.

While the series will still have a lot of ground to cover — impeachment and the “vast right-wing conspiracy” she suspected, her successful 2000 Senate race, her loss to Barack Obama in the 2008 primaries, her time as secretary of state and her role in the Benghazi debacle — it’s striking that so much rich material will be excluded even before footage is discarded on the cutting-room floor.

Just consider what we’ll be missing.

Health-Care Gate: In 1997, federal judge Royce Lamberth levied $286,000 in sanctions against Bill Clinton’s administration for “running amok” in a “cover-up” of Hillary Clinton’s health-care task force. The scandal began when deputy White House counsel Vincent Foster made contradictory assertions about the first lady’s job status, in an attempt to keep the work of the task force secret. Foster later committed suicide, and a Secret Service agent saw Hillary Clinton’s chief of staff, Margaret Williams, carry boxes of papers out of Foster’s office before investigators showed up to seal it.

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton To Meet For Private Lunch On Monday, White House Announces

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will join President Barack Obama for lunch on Monday, the White House Press Office announced Sunday evening.

The noon appointment, which will be held in the President’s private dining room, is closed to the press. The White House did not disclose the purpose of the meeting. However, as with anything related to Clinton these days, discussion in the media will likely circle back to one topic: 2016.

Several prominent Democrats have already voiced their support for another Clinton presidential run. In May, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) called Clinton the “best qualified” person for the party’s nomination. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) commented last week that Clinton would “handle things probably even better” in the White House than her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
