4G wireless now a necessity for businesses

Sprint and AT&T both unveiled new 4G coverage zones today. The realm of 4G wireless networking continues to grow with each passing week, and for business users it has matured from a luxury to a necessity.

Sprint finally introduced 4G/LTE coverage in New York (or at least part of NY)—obviously a major wireless market. Meanwhile, AT&T added 4G coverage in eight new regions, bringing AT&T 4G service to a total of 336 markets across the United States.

Wireless providers continue to expand 4G/LTE coverage across the nation.

It wasn’t that long ago that wireless providers first started rolling out the next-generation 4G networks. In just a couple of years, though, 4G/LTE networks have become the standard—at least in larger metropolitan areas—and for business users trying to get things done from mobile devices, 4G makes all the difference.

PCWorld conducted an extensive nationwide survey of wireless service last year. Verizon and Sprint yielded sad results on their CDMA-based 3G networks, with average download speeds of about 1Mbps for Verizon, and about half that for Sprint. AT&T and T-Mobile did much better thanks to their HSPA+ 3G networks service, which T-Mobile actually marketed as 4G even though it’s not.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8.0 Tablet is Also a Phone

Determined to extend its Note line to all mobile form factors, Samsung has introduced the new 8-inch Galaxy Note 8.0, which falls alongside its 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II smartphone and 10-inch Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet.

Introduced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this weekend, the Galaxy Note 8.0 is an Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean-based tablet with an 8-inch 1280 x 800 display, delivering a pixel density of 189ppi — slightly higher than the iPad mini’s 7.9-inch 163ppi display. Under the hood, it’s powered by Samsung’s 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos 4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and comes with 32GB or 64GB of storage. While LTE variants are in the works, the Galaxy Note 8.0 will initially offer cellular connectivity via HSPA+ — supplemented, of course, by Wi-Fi.

T-Mobile exec: 4G LTE-launch timing is 'perfect'

T-Mobile USA’s senior vice president of B2B services Frank Sickinger shared some LTE-related numbers and had some interesting things to say in a recent interview about the carrier’s upcoming LTE rollout in the United States.

It’s well known among mobile watchers that T-Mobile will be the last major U.S. carrier to rollout an LTE network. The popular opinion is that T-Mobile has fallen behind other carriers when it comes to LTE. Sickinger, not surprisingly, begs to differ.

For T-Mobile, “it’s not just about having [an] LTE [network], it’s about building a massive LTE footprint,” Sickinger says. “We already have sites that are lit up with LTE. But for us it’s about having the entire network modernized [before launch]. That’s not always the case with the competition.”

T-Mobile’s wireless evolution from EDGE technology to HSPA and eventually HSPA+ has been a long and laborious process, but the carrier is just about ready to rollout LTE across America. Following a breakup of the proposed T-Mobile/AT&T merger in late 2011, T-Mobile was able to secure significant new spectrum from AT&T, according to Sickinger, which helped it expand the overall network and boost the HSPA+ coverage.
