SAN FRANCISCO — UPS and FedEx might be worried about international shipments to slowing economies such as China, but perhaps they should be more concerned about what’s going on in their own backyards.
Major U.S. retailers are experimenting with new e-commerce strategies that could dent demand for package delivery services, particularly demand for shipments over long distances, according to analysts and industry executives.
Amazon.com (AMZN) is building its distribution warehouses closer to customers to save millions of dollars in shipping costs. The world’s largest online retailer is also increasingly using its own delivery trucks, cutting United Parcel Service and FedEx out of some parts of its fulfillment network.
Meanwhile, major brick-and-mortar retailers such as Walmart Stores (WMT), Best Buy (BBY) and Gap (GPS) are shipping more online orders from stores close to shoppers, rather than from warehouses hundreds of miles away.
“UPS and FedEx are not only watching this, they are likely concerned about it,” said Lou Tapper, an executive at third-party logistics company Longistics, who worked at FedEx for 18 years. “Big companies like Amazon and Walmart will dictate which direction this goes. Those are the companies that FedEx and UPS need to fill their planes and trucks.”
United Parcel Service (UPS), the world’s largest package delivery company, on Friday cut its earnings forecasts, blaming overcapacity in the global air freight market, customers trading down to slower but cheaper shipping services, and a slowing U.S. industrial economy.
The move came after FedEx (FDX) said in June that it was raising shipping rates and cutting jobs and costs, as excess capacity in the air freight market had more than offset increased shipments.
Both package delivery companies set their fees according to zones that correspond to the distance a package has to travel.
For instance, FedEx’s Zone 2 is zero-to-150 miles from origin to destination, while Zone 4 is 301-to-600 miles. Shipping a 10-pound package in two days through Zone 4 costs $25.80, while the same package in Zone 2 costs 32 percent less at $17.50, according to FedEx’s latest rate card for consumers.
UPS uses similar zones for its domestic ground delivery service, which takes four to five days. Zone 4 costs $9.20, while Zone 2 costs $7.94 for a 10-pound package.
Retail companies get discounts for shipping big volumes of goods, but the percentage differences between the zones are similar, according to Joel Anderson, president of walmart.com.
Reducing Shipping Distances
Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has been shipping online orders from its stores for several years. This year, it is expanding the program to 50 locations from 25.

IXYS Introduces the Smallest Footprint Surface Mount Package for 1.2KV to 1.8KV Power Semiconductors
BIEL, Switzerland–(BUSINESS WIRE)– IXYS Corporation (NAS: IXYS) , a leader in power semiconductors and IC technologies for energy efficient products used in power conversion and motor control applications, announced today the D2-Pak (TO-263) and D3-Pak (TO-268) packages with higher ‘creepage’ spacing which enables higher voltage power semiconductors to be used in these Surface Mount Devices (SMD).
“The market demands smaller footprint solutions for 1.2KV to 1.8KV power semiconductors. The main reason for this is the higher power demands which are realized by higher voltages instead of higher current. By using a higher voltage the conduction losses in copper wires are less for power control circuits; therefore, thinner copper conductors or traces on PCB circuits can be used. These SMDs improve energy efficiency, reduce cost, reduce size and reduce weight when used in power electronics,” commented Mr. Jeroen van Zeeland, head of marketing at IXYS Germany.
SMDs are preferred for lower cost alternatives to modules and to other bulkier discrete components in integrated power designs. Until now there was no such solution for applications higher than 1.2KV. The new IXYS D2-Pak and D3-Pak designs now offer the standard footprint, but with compliance to the high voltage ‘creepage’ specifications.
For D3-Pak the creepage distance between the terminal to the copper of the backside is greater than or equal to 5.80 mm. The same value for the D2-Pak is greater than or equal to 4.70 mm. This enables the use of 1.2KV D3-Pak in pollution degree 2 industrial designs. In addition to industrial power control applications, these devices target other 1.2KV to 1.8KV power supply, UPS, renewable energy, motor drives and medical applications.

Fifty years ago, an employee’s last working day looked something like this: a company party filled with cake, balloons, and a ceremony with some kind words from the boss for “a job well done for 40 years of dedicated service,” accompanied by a gold watch, a pat on the back, and a room full of smiles.
But the biggest smile of all was on the face of the retiree. Not only did he know that he’d never have to set his alarm clock again, but he also knew he’d receive a check in the mail, which he could set that gold watch to, for every single month until the day he died. But those days are nearly over.
Not your grandfather’s pension
Pensions have become a much smaller piece of Americans’ retirement savings mix over the past several decades. Specifically, during the past 15 years, employers have shifted their retirement offerings for new employees away from the traditional pension plan your grandpa probably received. In 1985, 89 Fortune 100 companies offered a traditional defined benefit, or pension, plan to newly hired salaried workers. Today only 11 companies on the Fortune 100 list offer such as traditional pension plan. Meanwhile, defined contribution plans — think 401(k)s — have become the norm.
We can chalk up the main reason for the trend to simple dollars and cents. Increased life expectancy, persistently low interest rates, and amplified stock market volatility are all working against traditional pension plans. In addition, many corporate plans must now dig themselves out of massive pension deficits because of not enough money pumped into the plan, coupled with poor planning and flawed assumptions. Put simply, companies don’t want the exposure on their balance sheets and the drag on their bottom lines.
In fact, during the most recent earnings season, both Ford and Goodyear Tire and Rubber disclosed gaping pension shortfalls. In fact, last year alone, Ford’s pension deficit widened by a cavernous 21%. Goodyear contributed nearly $650 million to its plan in 2012, up from a $233 million contribution in 2011. Yet its plan’s funded status is in the hole an extra $400 million versus one year ago. Meanwhile, UPS reported a fourth-quarter 2012 loss, resulting in part from a $3 billion non-cash pension-related accounting charge. The company faces a $225 million rise in pension costs for 2013.
Pensions getting pink slips
But some companies are putting the ax to their pension plans. In an effort to ease its burden, Ford recently offered pension buyouts to roughly 100,000 qualifying former workers and retirees who held white-collar positions with the Detroit automaker. And last year, General Motors offloaded a large chunk of its liabilities to insurer Prudential Financial , trimming its pension liabilities by more than $25 billion. By no means did this move completely shuck all of GM‘s obligations off the books, but it significantly eliminated a big drag on the automaker’s bottom line.

UPS won’t be charged with any crimes. Its biggest rival, FedEx Corp., has also been a target of the federal investigation.
The investigation of the two companies stems from a global campaign to shutter illicit online pharmacies launched in 2005. Since then, dozens of arrests have been made and thousands of websites closed worldwide as investigators continue to broaden the probe beyond the operators.

The investigation of the two companies stems from a global campaign to shutter illicit online pharmacies launched in 2005. Since then, dozens of arrests have been made and thousands of websites closed worldwide as investigators continue to broaden the probe beyond the operators.
Earlier this week, Chris Napoli, the operator of Safescripts Online, was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to forfeit $24 million in revenue the illicit pharmacy took in between 2004 and 2006. Two other men were sentenced to prison along with Napoli.
Receipts from UPS and FedEx were used as evidence in the trio’s trial last year.
Seven others have been convicted of operating illegal pharmacies in San Francisco federal court last year.
In 2011, Google Inc. (GOOG) agreed to pay $500 million to settle allegations by the Justice Department that it profited from ads for illegal online pharmacies.
UPS and FedEx each disclosed they were the target of a federal investigation in regulatory filings last year. UPS signaled at the time it was working on a resolution with the DOJ. FedEx, on the other hand, asserted no wrongdoing and said it wouldn’t accept a plea bargain.
