Sony stays in profit, revenue grows from strong smartphone sales

Sony reported a modest profit in its first fiscal quarter ended June 30, continuing a turnaround that started in the last fiscal year.

The company has also raised its revenue forecast for its current fiscal year on account of the depreciating Yen.

If the return to profitability in the last fiscal year mainly came from the sale of assets including its U.S. headquarters, a large Tokyo office complex and share holdings, the turnaround in the quarter came from improved sales of smartphones and the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates.

The company reported that its net profit was ¥3.5 billion (US$35 million) in the quarter, compared to losses of ¥24.6 billion in the same quarter last year. Revenue was up 13 percent to ¥1.7 trillion.

Taro Aso, Japan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Says Tokyo Could Learn From Nazis’ Tactics

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Japan’s gaffe-prone deputy prime minister has said Tokyo could learn from Nazi Germany when it comes to constitutional reform, prompting a rebuke from a Jewish human rights group.

In a statement on its website late Tuesday, the US-based Simon Wiesenthal Center called on Taro Aso to clarify his comments that Tokyo, which is mulling a change to its pacifist constitution, should look to the way the Nazis quietly adopted reforms.

“First, mass media started to make noises (about Japan’s proposed reforms), and then China and South Korea followed suit,” Aso was quoted by Japanese media as saying in a speech Monday to a conservative think tank.

“The German Weimar constitution changed, without being noticed, to the Nazi German constitution. Why don’t we learn from their tactics?”

In response, the Jewish rights group said: “The only lessons on governance that the world should draw from the Nazi Third Reich is how those in positions of power should not behave”.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, the Japanese government’s top spokesman, on Wednesday declined to answer media questions about the comments, saying “deputy prime minister Aso should answer that question”.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has said it wants to revise the US-imposed pacifist constitution to define Japan’s defence forces as a full-fledged military force, amid territorial tensions with neighbours China and South Korea.

That has stirred strong emotions in Beijing and Seoul which have long maintained that Japan has never come to terms with its militaristic past.

Aso, who is also Japan’s finance minister, is known for his sometimes uncomfortable remarks, including saying earlier this year that elderly people should “hurry up and die” to avoid taxing the country’s medical system.

Citadel malware active on 20,000 PCs in Japan, says Trend Micro

Citadel malware is installed on over 20,000 PCs in Japan and actively sending financial information it harvests to servers abroad, according to security software vendor Trend Micro.

Tokyo-based Trend Micro said it monitored remote servers in the U.S. and Europe that collect data gathered by Japanese versions of the malware for six days last week. On some days there were nearly 230,000 connections made from 20,000 infected computers.

The malware has been designed specifically to target domestic users, collecting financial details corresponding to six Japanese financial institutions as well as popular services such as e-mail from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

“Damage from this tool for online banking fraud is still continuing today,” Trend Micro said in a Japanese security blog.

Lexus Reportedly will Debut RC350 at Tokyo Auto Show, RC F in Detroit

By Andrew Wendler

When we caught a few spy shots of the pending Lexus RC hiding under that swirly black and white camouflage earlier this month, we already had a pretty good bead on the car’s architecture and potential powertrain options, but could only speculate regarding its timeline for rollout. Now, Automotive News is reporting that the RC350 will debut at November’s Tokyo auto show, followed by debut of the RC F performance variant in January at the Detroit auto show.

Being conscientious types, we got on the horn to Lexus pronto, hoping for an official comment. True to form, the brand had none, other than mentioning that any official teasers or pre-previews probably would take take place “three months or so” before any legitimate unveiling. Based on such a timeline, expect to see Lexus’s first teasers for the new RC in August.

Automotive News goes on to say that the RC350 will begin trickling into showrooms in late 2014. Predictably, the RC350 will be powered by Lexus’s ubiquitous 3.5-liter V-6, while AN reports that Lexus sources say the RC F will be powered by a 460-hp V-8. Video of the RC F being tested would suggest that’s the case, but our sources hinted that a 3.5-liter V-6 with forced induction was a real possibility. Regardless of engine choices, it’ll be interesting to see how much of the LF-CC concept’s styling makes the transition to these production vehicles.

Report: Nissan design to show more Chinese influence

By Brandon Turkus

Filed under:

Nissan is going to be leveraging the weight of the Chinese market by selling cars influenced by the People’s Republic in other markets around the globe. The influence of Chinese design is further proof of the country’s importance on a global scale. Nissan isn’t the only manufacturer that’s looking to leverage China’s burgeoning design talent, as BMW, Volkswagen, and General Motors have all set up facilities.

In fact, VW and GM have both used Chinese talent to design cars, in the Passat and Buick LaCrosse, respectively. Nissan has already tested the waters with its Beijing studios, penning the Friend-Me Concept from this year’s Shanghai Auto Show. Where GM and VW used their Shanghai-based studios as more consultancies than anything else, though, Nissan is aiming to have the Beijing studio design a global car.

According to Nissan’s global design head, Shiro Nakamura, that’s already happening. Nakamura told Reuters that Nissan is two years from launching a Chinese-designed global model that will see sales in both North America and Europe, in addition to its home market. While Nakamura wouldn’t elaborate on what the new model’s styling would entail, there’s a focus on what the Chinese call daqi.

A difficult to describe and translate word, daqi is what Chinese customers look for in their cars. Whether daqi translates to global markets remains to be seen, though. We’re cautiously optimistic, based on what we’ve seen over the years. The looks are more advanced, more dramatic and are rapidly leaving behind the photocopier designs which typified much of the country’s early design efforts.

If you’re still nervous about a Chinese-designed car, just know this – the design Nissan chose beat out competitors from London, San Diego, and Nissan’s home studio outside of Tokyo. That has us looking forward to what comes out of the People’s Republic.

Despite Summer Lull 3 Central Banks Have Work to Do

By Dean Popplewell, Contributor

Despite the onset of the summer doldrums, a busy weekend in Moscow, Tokyo, and Beijing will possibly inject some life into the financial markets. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe got what he wanted over the weekend: control of the upper house of parliament. The Liberal Democratic Party-New Komeito coalition Abe leads now holds 135 seats after the election, regaining a majority and surpassing the “stable majority” threshold of 129 seats that enabled the coalition to control the house. Abe’s coalition already owns 325 seats and enjoys the so-called “super majority” in the lower house. Armed with a new, strong mandate, the country’s political stability is on solid footing for the first time in six years as Abe presses ahead with his economic reforms. …read more

Asia's Week: Decisive Political Moment in Japan?

By Tim Ferguson, Forbes Staff

This weekend, eyes will be trained on Tokyo for results of the upper-house election that is forecast to cement Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s governing majority. Only a tremor in the Nikkei stock market on Friday has suggested any doubt that Abe, with or without a minority-party coalition, will have his way for three years after the vote removes the opposition Democrats from blocking power. …read more

Honda Releases First Photo of 2014 Fit, Specs on Japanese-Market Fit Hybrid

By Alexander Stoklosa

2014 Honda Fit hybrid

The next-generation Fit subcompact is just around the corner, set to arrive here as a 2014 model early next year, and now we’ve gotten our first official look at it, courtesy of Honda. It appears as though the alleged scans of the new Fit from a Japanese publication we recently published were, in fact, the real deal. Besides revealing what the new Fit will look like, Honda also released some details about the car’s hybrid variant—at least the Japanese-market version.

Of course, we’re not yet sure whether or not Honda will send us the next-gen Fit hybrid. The outgoing model never made it to our shores—although the electric Fit EV did. Based on Honda’s own testing, the 2014 Fit hybrid will be one efficient machine, at least when put through the rather optimistic Japanese JC08 fuel-economy testing cycle. The manufacturer states the Fit hybrid will be good for 36.4 km per liter, which equates roughly to 86 mpg. Even on our less-optimistic EPA cycle, were the Fit hybrid to make it here for such testing, we expect the littlest Honda would return some heady figures. For a more relevant reference point, Honda claims the new hybrid is 35 percent more efficient than the outgoing model.

2014 Honda Fit hybrid

The Fit hybrid owes its fuel-sipping ability to a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine (of unspecified output); although it’s not specifically outlined, we suspect the engine features direct injection. After all, Honda is finally working to switch its fours and sixes over to this more efficient fuel-delivery setup. The engine bolts up to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a built-in electric motor, which draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack. Full-electric operation is possible thanks to the engine’s ability to disconnect from the transmission, and, of course, there is regenerative braking functionality to recoup energy for the battery pack. Unlike Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid setup, which powers today’s Fit hybrid and Civic hybrid, the new, more complex setup is dubbed “Sport Hybrid i-DCD.”

Honda is putting the new Fit hybrid on sale in Japan beginning this September, and we expect the automaker will debut the entire Fit lineup—gas-powered model included—at an auto show this fall, either in L.A. or Tokyo. Further down the road, the next Fit (which will be built in Mexicoalso will spin off a sedan and small crossover, both of which will be sold here in the U.S.

Japan Airlines 787 with possible pump issue returns to Boston

A Japan Airlines flight to Tokyo’s Narita Airport returned to Boston’s Logan Airport on Thursday because of a possible fuel pump issue on the Boeing 787 aircraft.

It’s the latest trouble for the new Dreamliner aircraft after a lithium ion battery problem grounded the fleet in January and a fire erupted on an empty Ethiopian Airlines plane parked at Britain’s Heathrow Airport last week.

Flight 007 returned to Boston “as a standard precautionary measure” to check out a maintenance message indicator showing the possible fuel pump problem and landed safely, Japan Airlines spokeswoman Carol Anderson said.

The pilot didn’t declare an emergency, and the aircraft burned off fuel before landing, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac said.

The plane left for Tokyo just before 1 p.m. Thursday for a flight of nearly 14 hours. It returned just before 6:30 p.m.

The flight was canceled, and passengers were being put on other flights.

One of two battery fires that grounded the 787s for three months broke out on a Japan Airlines plane at Logan in January after passengers had exited. The next day, another Japan Airlines 787 leaked 40 gallons of fuel at Logan. The airline said an open valve caused a tank to overflow through a vent.

The 787 is the newest and highest-profile plane from Chicago-based Boeing Co., which has said it stands behind its safety and overall integrity. The 787 is assembled at Boeing plants in Everett, Wash., and North Charleston, S.C.

Japanese PM may push nationalism after election

With the economy perking up under his “Abenomics” policies, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his ruling bloc are seen rolling to a convincing victory in Sunday’s upper house election and regaining control of both houses of parliament for the first time in six years.

A win would be sweet redemption for Abe, who lost the upper house in 2007 during an earlier stint as prime minister, and make it easier for him to govern. He says his top priorities are regaining political stability and reviving the long-stagnant economy, the chief concern for voters. But a decisive victory could also embolden him on another front: the nationalistic agenda he had to abandon his first time in office.

“He may hear that internal voice saying, `This is the time for you to pursue your own goals,’ ” said Koichi Nakano, a political science professor at Sophia University in Tokyo.

Abe owes his rise to prime minister in part to right-wing supporters in his party who expect him to pursue their agenda. That may include laying the groundwork for revising Japan’s pacifist constitution, promoting traditional family values and making changes to the education system to instill more patriotism in students. Abe has called the current history curriculum “self-abusive” and too apologetic to Asian neighbors over Japan’s wartime actions.

He needs to tread carefully, however, because any step-up in nationalism would likely exacerbate already tense ties with nearby China and South Korea. He has already upset both since taking office in December by saying he wants to revise Japan’s landmark 1995 apology for its wartime aggression and questioning the extent to which Korean, Chinese and other Asian women were coerced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers.

A further deterioration in relations with China and South Korea would be worrisome for the United States as it seeks to engage more deeply in the Asia-Pacific region. To the extent that nationalism translates into a stronger military, though, some would welcome that as a counter to rising Chinese power.

“Being a nationalist means devoting your political effort to making your country stronger,” former U.S. National Security Council staffer Mike Green said recently at the Japan National Press Club. “That’s exactly what Japan needs, and that’s exactly what the U.S. needs from Japan.”

Under the campaign slogan “Recover Japan,” Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party vows to make Japan a muscular, gentle and proud country. It promises a strong economy, strategic diplomacy and unshakable national security under the Japan-U.S. alliance.

The message has found a measure of public receptivity amid growing tensions over Japan’s long-running maritime territorial disputes with China and South Korea and widespread distrust of an increasingly assertive China.

But the top concern for voters is the economy, which is showing signs of life thanks to aggressive monetary easing and public works spending, the first two “arrows” of Abe’s economic platform dubbed “Abenomics.”

Surveys show that after the economy and jobs, voters are most interested in social security, the sales tax hike and reconstruction after the March 2011 tsunami. The constitution, energy and trade attract the least …read more

Japan Airlines flight for Tokyo returns to Boston

A Japan Airlines Boeing 787 that left Boston for Tokyo on Thursday returned to Boston “due to aircraft maintenance”, the company said on its website without elaborating.

Japan Airlines has one of the largest fleets of the Boeing 787 and has had several problems with the new-generation Dreamliner plane since it was allowed to resume flying after being grounded between January and April for serious battery problems.

The plane left from Boston at 12:57pm (1657 GMT) but returned to its airport of departure at around 6:00 pm.

“As a standard precautionary measure due to a maintenance message (fuel pump) indicator, JL007 bound for Tokyo-Narita decided to return to Boston Logan for check and landed safely,” Carol Anderson, a US-based JAL spokeswoman, told AFP in an email.

Boston Logan said on its Twitter site the 787 made “a precautionary return”.

“Flight has landed and is taxiing to gate,” it said.

JAL officials in Tokyo were not immediately available for comment.

Last week, another 787 used by Ethiopian Airlines caught fire at London’s Heathrow airport.

Japanese airlines Japan Airlines and ANA, which has the biggest fleet of the craft, have experienced around a dozen minor complaints with the 787 since it was allowed to resume flying after four months of being grounded.

After months of investigations, US authorities in April formally approved Boeing’s battery fix and Japanese regulators followed suit.

The battery supplier, Japan’s GS Yuasa, has voiced confidence that the system will never cause similar problems again.

Asiana Grounds Plane With Engine Oil Leak, Passengers Wait 17 Hours

By The Huffington Post News Editors

SEOUL, July 17 (Reuters) – Asiana Airlines Inc on Wednesday said it grounded one of its Boeing 777 jets in Los Angeles when an engine started leaking oil, less than two weeks after one of the South Korean carrier’s 777s crash landed in San Francisco.
The leak was found on Monday as the plane prepared for takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport bound for South Korea’s Incheon airport, the airline said. The passenger jet underwent maintenance and passengers had to wait about 17 hours before they could fly on another plane.
The incident came nine days after a Boeing 777 operated by Asiana crash-landed on July 6 at San Francisco International Airport, resulting in the deaths of three teenage girls and injuring over 180 other passengers and crew.
U.S. and South Korean authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Initial information from the investigation has indicated the plane was flying too slowly as it came in to land.
Another Asiana-operated Boeing 777 was delayed in San Francisco on June 2 due to an oil leak in one of its engines.
On July 8 a San Francisco-bound Boeing Co 777 operated by Japan Airlines Co turned back to Tokyo after its crew detected a leak in the hydraulic system that controls its flaps.
