Nothing new came to the Wii U eShop this week, but luckily a brand new title from the Pokémon developer and the best Resident Evil game in years have finally found their way to the 3DS. But what else is headed our way this week? As always, each Thursday I’ll be bringing you a list of what’s available (retail and original software, DLC, demos and more), complete with prices and descriptions (care of Nintendo’s official site). For more information, jump over to your 3DS or Wii U!

HarmoKnight Review

HarmoKnight is a game all about rhythm and harmony, in more ways than one. On the surface, it’s a rhythm-based platformer in the same vein as the Bit.Trip Runner games. Past that, this is the rare measure where Pokémon developer Game Freak can lay down an original solo. HarmoKnight is well worth the diversion, and another stellar addition to Nintendo’s budding eShop portfolio.

You play primarily as Tempo, a likable young errand boy who has the potential to become a famed HarmoKnight and save the world of Melodia from the vile Noizoids. The story and colorful world are presented through a mix of beautiful 2D cutscenes and 3D introductions. As you’ll learn in some overly long tutorials, Tempo controls rather simply: Y or A jumps, and B or A hits. The simplicity works very well, especially once the enemies and obstacles start popping up at a solid clip and give off clues to warn you when they are coming. For example, one enemy’s appearance is predicated by a signature whizzing sound, which helps you time your hit. The music behind it all is catchy, and features enough stylistic variation to stay fresh throughout each world, from a volcanic, rock music-themed world to a more mellow, calypso-themed beach.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity Review

From the beginning, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series has shouldered the genetic burden of its unique lineage. It combines two long-running RPG franchises, which would seem to make it a shoo-in for easy success. In this case, however, the two series in question (Pokémon and Mystery Dungeon, just like it says on the box) operate under radically different premises that don’t seem to play well together.

The more popular of the two parents, Pokémon, tasks players with capturing a vast array of cute creatures and carefully building perfectly balanced teams around their traits. Game Freak‘s megahit encourages a depth of planning and forethought rivaled only by similar stat-crunching ventures like fantasy football and the artillery corps. For those who let themselves become sucked into the world of hardcore number management, the rabbit hole has no bottom; truly dedicated Pokémon battlers maintain insanely intricate spreadsheets to track generations of breeding for their teams, much of which is based on invisible stats that can’t even be determined within the game itself.

The Nintendo Direct 3DS eShop Roundup

Fans of portable digital downloads were hit with a tidal wave of new announcements during this morning’s new Nintendo Direct video presentation – so many that you may have even missed a few. But no worries! We’ve collected each and every piece of breaking news right here. Let’s dive in.

The sensational-looking rhythm-based platformer developed by Game Freak finally has a specific launch date – it’ll be coming to the 3DS eShop on March 28. You’ll be able to start running and jumping to the beat two weeks earlier than that, though, as the game is also getting a free demo – and that will be available on March 14. Exactly one month away! Happy Valentine‘s, rhythm fans.

Three all-new game announcements followed immediately after the HarmoKnight news, and first among the trio was Kersploosh!. This is a game that looks a bit like Ketzal’s Corridors, in that you’re once again challenged to direct the movements of an object hurtling fast through a corridor – but instead of controlling Tetris-like blocks you’re simply maneuvering a rock. A falling rock. A falling rock that’s been tossed into a well. Perhaps this is some kind of magic rock, and a wish is granted if it hits the water below? We won’t have to wait too long to find out more, as Kersploosh! is launching in the 3DS eShop on March 7.
