Battlefield 4 Won’t Include Motion Control

Battlefield 4 will not include motion controls. In a new interview, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach explained that he doesn’t see motion control as a necessary addition since it wouldn’t enrich the experience.

“We are not interested in things that don’t make the game better,” Bach told Edge. “There are a lot of gimmicks – people throwing money at us – ‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing?’ No, it doesn’t make the game better.”

Bach added that the studio is “extremely open to innovation, but if it’s a gimmick, there’s no point unless it adds value to the player. Touch screens used to be a gimmick, because no one could get it to work until iPhone came out and used it right. It adds to the experience, and now everyone is doing it. To us it’s the same with motion control and perceptual gaming in general; if it adds, great. If it’s a gimmick, ignore it.”

Who Should Develop Games For LucasArts?

With LucasArts closed, and internal development ceased, the studio has become a licensing house for others to borrow brands and create new games. With that in mind, the IGN editors convened to fantasize about what the future might hold — obviously the completion of Star Wars: 1313 would make sense if, say, Crystal Dynamics picked up development. Of course DICE would do a great Battlefront reboot. But we wanted to explore less obvious options.

Let us know what you’d like to see come from the limitless potential that is the new era of LucasArts.

Journey Sequel Unlikely

Despite overwhelming success at tonight’s BAFTA Game Awards, one of the creators of Journey has stated that a sequel to the game is unlikely.

The game’s executive producer Robin Hunicke told IGN that, due to thatgamecompany splintering following the completion of the high-acclaimed title, no one was particularly keen to see a follow-up.

“I think we all put a lot of heart and soul into Journey, so we’d like to leave it where it is,” she explained. “It’s pretty much perfect the way it is, we don’t want to mess with that so I would imagine there would be no Journey 2.”

This isn’t too surprising considering the current state of thatgamecompany; the company’s co-founder Jenova Chen recently reflected on the fact that the studio was no longer exclusively tied to Sony and how many of it’s employees had now moved on to unannounced projects. To get the full story, check out our interview with Jenova Chen from DICE.

AMD plans to sell an APU based on modified PlayStation 4 hardware

Chip maker AMD will sell a cut-down version of the custom chip it developed for the upcoming Sony PlayStation 4 gaming console. The accelerated processing unit (APU) from AMD won’t be quite as potent as the one destined for Sony’s console, but it will be very similar to the custom APU powering the PS4.

AMD’s head of marketing John Taylor told The Inquirer that the PC-focused APU equivalent going on sale later this year will not feature Sony proprietary technology, which will remain exclusive to the PS4. He went on to call the PlayStation 4’s processor “by far the most powerful APU we have built to date.”

The finer details of AMD‘s next-generation “Jaguar” architecture are still somewhat shrouded in mystery, but we do know some details about Sony’s processor. The chip will have eight x86-64 CPU cores, while the GPU will be based on the next-gen Radeon graphics engine, capable of 1.84 teraflops of performance power. As with all AMD APUs, the CPU and GPU will be on the same physical die, with 8GB of GDDR5 memory to share between them.

Johan Andersson, technical director at game developer DICE, is a fan of the PlayStation 4’s stellar memory bandwidth.

The PS4-inspired APU heading to PCs will have fewer cores and less computing capability than the chips made for Sony, Taylor said. We’d expect the PC version to cut the eight CPU cores in half, as AMD has previously stated that Jaguar-powered PC processors will have up to four cores. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 4’s home run specification—the 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM—will no doubt suffer from extensive alterations in order to play nice with standard motherboards, which will likely send the memory bandwidth plummeting from the PlayStation 4’s sky-high 176GBps rate.

Zombie Studios on Daylight, Reviving Horror Games

It’s rare to see true horror in games anymore. Industry staples like Silent Hill and Resident Evil have long since moved past their horror roots, and even more recent entries like Dead Space have begun to incorporate more action. With the announcement of its first Unreal Engine 4 game, Daylight, Zombie Studios is looking to reverse that trend.

At the DICE summit in Vegas last week, IGN had a chance to sit down with Zombie creative studio head Jared Gerritzen and Daylight writer Jessica Chobot to talk about creating true horror experiences in an industry distancing itself from the genre, plus how Unreal Engine 4 changes the development landscape.

Journey Dev Looking at Tablets, PC for Next Game

It’s not easy to follow a game like Journey. After winning various Game of the Year awards (including IGN’s), thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen is feeling the pressure of debuting a successful follow-up. In an interview with IGN from the DICE summit in Vegas last week, Chen discussed his next game, the decision to bring it to multiple platforms, and where he thinks the industry is headed.

“It has to be better. I can’t just let people down,” Chen told IGN about his next game. “Even just before coming to DICE, I was like ‘this is not going to top Journey.’ But I can’t see a game that’s more epic than the journey of a lifetime, right? From living to dying. How can you do something to top that? That’s tremendous pressure. I’m trying to stay away, trying not to directly compete with Journey in my next game. That’s what I’m working on right now.”

Schell: Demos Can Cut Game Sales in Half

Releasing a game demo may not actually be a very good way to boost game sales; in fact, it could reduce the number of copies you shift by up to half.

That’s the claim made by industry analyst and Puzzle Clubhouse CEO Jesse Schell during a presentation at DICE 2013 (via PCGamesN), and he even had a graph to back him up.

Using Xbox 360 sales as an example, Schell proceeded to show his audience that the best-selling games were those that built expectations in players, but then gave them no way to try it out short of buying a copy. Summarising the collective feeling of the room, he said “You mean we spent all this money making a demo and getting it out there, and it cut our sales in half? Yes, that’s exactly what happened to you.”

Blacklight Dev Reveals Unreal Engine 4 Horror Game

Zombie Studios has announced Daylight, a new horror game built on Unreal Engine 4. The announcement came from the DICE summit in Vegas tonight, as Zombie finally provided details on the project it first teased in December.

Daylight is a horror game featuring a procedurally-generated environment. With only the light of a cell phone to guide them, players will navigate the halls of a dark building as a woman who’s just woken up. Every experience will be different as rooms are randomly generated, and players will only learn about the game’s story via clues they discover as they explore.

DICE: Journey Was Originally Named Utopia, Had 4 Players

Journey began as a four-player game in 2006 called Utopia. It had a physical push system and a totally separate resource mechanic, and once it reached full cycle in development and testers played it, everyone said it sucked.

thatgamecompay co-founder and Journey creator Jenova Chen asked Sony for an extra year of development time to get it right. Sony said yes, and the rest is history, Chen explained during his keynote address at DICE 2013 today.

Here’s what Utopia looked like during its earliest concept stages.

Gabe Newell on Reinventing Gaming

In a keynote presentation at the DICE summit in Vegas today, Valve’s Gabe Newell laid out his vision for the future of the gaming industry, including Valve’s place in hardware manufacturing and the role of users in producing content. In a talk entitled “A View on Next Steps,” Newell explained the place of PCs in the living room and how Valve plans to help them evolve.

“A sort of ‘good-better-best’ segmentation will occur in the living room,” Newell said, reiterating the tiered system he described at CES. He explained that the segmentation applies to both price and functionality. “We’ve done a good job of showing both customers and software developers you can keep that huge investment you’ve made in PC and with a little extra work you can also capitalize on that in the living room.”

Rayman Legends Delayed, No Longer Wii U Exclusive

Ubisoft has announced that Rayman Legends has been delayed and will no longer be a Wii U exclusive. Legends will now hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U in early September, more than six months later than its original release date of February 26th.

At the DICE summit in Vegas, IGN spoke with Xavier Poix, managing director of Ubisoft’s French studios (including Ubisoft Paris, Annecy and Rayman developer Montpellier) about the reasons behind both the delay and the move to multiple consoles.

“When we saw all the comments when we announced the game would be focused on Wii U, all of the people that have both the PlayStation 3 and 360 were really disappointed,” Poix told IGN. “So we thought it was making more sense to also bring the game to where it was originally from. That means Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. So we decided to go for a multiplatform launch simultaneously.”
