Can Brooklyn Nets Wrestle New York From Knicks With Record $180 Million Team?

The Brooklyn Nets shocked the NBA last month when the team swung a trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry. The trio arrives in New York with championship rings, 25 combined All-Star game appearances, MVP and Sixth Man of the Year awards, as well as countless other accolades. The group was introduced Thursday at a press conference at the Barclays Center. Nets’ owner Mikhail Prokhorov made a surprise appearance after jetting in from Moscow and he made it clear what his expectations are. “I will [only] be proud when we win the championship,” Prokhorov said. “For me there is only one place: First place.” …read more

THE FACTS: Deron Williams had a game-high 29 points and 12 assists, as the Brooklyn Nets earned a road season sweep of the Boston Celtics with a 101-93 victory. Brook Lopez added 21 points, while Joe Johnson chipped in with 20 in the balanced offensive effort for the visitors, which helped Brooklyn build and maintain a double-digit lead for nearly the entire second half. Paul Pierce had 23 points in the loss, hurting Boston’s chances at moving up in the Eastern Conference standings before the postseason. With the win, Brooklyn takes the season series 3-1 over Boston.

Reserve guard Jerryd Bayless led the Grizzlies with 30 points, one shy of his career high, to offset a 26-point effort by Paul Pierce of the Celtics, who were playing without injured starters Kevin Garnett and Courtney Lee. The Grizzlies led by 21 with 7:16 to go, but had to withstand a Celtics’ rally that cut the margin to two points on three occasions in the game’s final 20 seconds, the last at 108-106 with 8.3 seconds left. …read more

BOSTON — Kevin Garnett scored 12 points, passing Jerry West for 15th on the NBA‘s career scoring list, and Paul Pierce joined him among the top 20 scorers in league history with 15 points as the Boston Celtics beat the Toronto Raptors 112-88 on Wednesday night.

Garnett needed four points to pass West (25,192 points) and Pierce entered the game nine points shy of tying Charles Barkley (23,757) for 20th.

Jeff Green‘s lay-in on a high-low feed from Kevin Garnett with five-tenths of a second remaining completed an 11-0 run in the final 4:15 that rallied the Celtics to an 83-81 victory over the stunned Indiana Pacers Wednesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana led 81-72 with 4:36 remaining but shot 0-for-7 with four turnovers the rest of the way. Garnett scored 18 to lead the Celtics (33-27), who won their fourth in a row and improved to 13-4 since Rajon Rondo was lost for the season with a knee injury. THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics nearly blew a 15-point fourth quarter lead, but managed to get some clutch shooting from Paul Pierce and Jason Terry in the final minute to escape with a 106-104 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. It was the fourth straight win for the Celtics since Rajon Rondo suffered a torn ACL, with all of the wins coming at the TD Garden. Pierce scored 15 of his team-high 22 points for the hosts in the second half, as the Celtics held off a furious comeback from the shorthanded Clippers, who were without Chris Paul (knee) for the seventh straight games. Eric Bledsoe had a game-high 23 points and 10 assists in the setback. It was the Clippers’ second straight loss overall.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics shot 63 percent in the first half, which allowed them to pull away early and cruise to a 99-81 win over the Sacramento Kings. It was the second straight win for the Celtics (22-23) without All-Star Rajon Rondo, who is sidelined for the season with a torn ACL. Without their floor general, Boston relied on ball movement and a balanced offensive effort. Six players finished in double figures, led by Paul Pierce (16 points, 10 rebounds). Tyreke Evans had 19 points for the Kings (17-30), who have now dropped five of their last six games.
