Can Brooklyn Nets Wrestle New York From Knicks With Record $180 Million Team?

The Brooklyn Nets shocked the NBA last month when the team swung a trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry. The trio arrives in New York with championship rings, 25 combined All-Star game appearances, MVP and Sixth Man of the Year awards, as well as countless other accolades. The group was introduced Thursday at a press conference at the Barclays Center. Nets’ owner Mikhail Prokhorov made a surprise appearance after jetting in from Moscow and he made it clear what his expectations are. “I will [only] be proud when we win the championship,” Prokhorov said. “For me there is only one place: First place.” …read more

Thompson took advantage of a Celtics front line missing Paul Pierce (ankle) and Kevin Garnett (ankle), to post career highs in both points (29) and rebounds (17). THE FACTS: J.R. Smith had a game-high 32 points off the bench, helping the New York Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics 100-85 in a battle of two undermanned squads. Carmelo Anthony added 29 points and eight rebounds for the Knicks, who have now won five straight games, all coming without All-Star center Tyson Chandler (neck). Jeff Green had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the hosts in the setback, as Boston played without Kevin Garnett (ankle) and Courtney Lee (ankle) for the second straight game. THE FACTS: Despite playing without injured starting center Marc Gasol, the Memphis Grizzlies won their 10th straight home game, a 110-106 victory over the Boston Celtics Saturday night at FedExForum. Reserve guard Jerryd Bayless led the Grizzlies with 30 points, one shy of his career high, to offset a 26-point effort by Paul Pierce of the Celtics, who were playing without injured starters Kevin Garnett and Courtney Lee. The Grizzlies led by 21 with 7:16 to go, but had to withstand a Celtics’ rally that cut the margin to two points on three occasions in the game’s final 20 seconds, the last at 108-106 with 8.3 seconds left. …read more

THE FACTS: LeBron James had 37 points and 12 assists, as the Miami Heat overcame 43 points from Jeff Green to defeat the Boston Celtics 105-103 for their 23rd consecutive win. The visitors trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half against a shorthanded Celtics squad that was playing without Kevin Garnett (flu). The Heat fought back however, spoiling Green’s career night with a game-winning jumper from James with ten seconds remaining. THE FACTS: Left for dead two months ago, the Boston Celtics have come fully to life. Jeff Green‘s lay-in on a high-low feed from Kevin Garnett with five-tenths of a second remaining completed an 11-0 run in the final 4:15 that rallied the Celtics to an 83-81 victory over the stunned Indiana Pacers Wednesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana led 81-72 with 4:36 remaining but shot 0-for-7 with four turnovers the rest of the way. Garnett scored 18 to lead the Celtics (33-27), who won their fourth in a row and improved to 13-4 since Rajon Rondo was lost for the season with a knee injury.
