The Smurfs 2 Review

By Matt Fowler

First things first. This review comes with a caveat. I never saw the first Smurfs movie. So if you have a problem with me reviewing the second installment of this franchise, this is your chance to back out. Continue no further. Because there’s a chance that I’ll miss some character complexities and cinematic nuances if they were, in fact, established in the first installment.

But I asked my son what happened and then read the Wiki page, so I’m good, right?

How I even managed to miss* (*dodge) the first Smurfs, having three kids, is beyond me. Fortune lands when least expected. But, likewise, atrocity strikes when we’re least prepared. And Smurfs 2, with all of its needless three dimensions, struck me right between the eyes. As animated fare goes this summer, we’ve gone from the unnecessary-but-charming Monsters University to the derivative, mediocre Turbo to…this. This steaming pile of misery.

Fillion, Krasinski Enroll at Monsters U.

Monsters University already features a top-notch pool of voice talent, including Monsters, Inc. veterans John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi.

But while visiting Pixar last week, director Dan Scanlon revealed to IGN that Nathan Fillion, John Krasinski and Bonnie Hunt are also lending their voices to the animated film. Can 20th Century Fox and Dreamworks combined challenge the Disney animation empire?

    By Scott Mendelson, Contributor

During the summer of 2013, there will be six animated (or live-action/animated hybrid) entries.  At a glance, it would seem like healthy competition as each of the major current players are offering an official entry into the summer box office sweepstakes.  You’ve got 20th Century Fox taking a shot at proving they can do more than Ice Age sequels, delivering the somewhat on-the-nose-titled Epic over Memorial Day weekend.  Pixar unleashes their official summer entry, the Monsters Inc. prequel Monsters University on June 21st.  Universal delivers its trump card with Despicable Me 2 over July 4th weekend while Dreamworks releases its snail-racing comedy Turbo on July 17th, a frankly unusual release date for them, but no matter.  Sony delivers The Smurfs 2 on July 31st while Disney offers up the previously straight-to-DVD entry Planes on August 9th. …read more

    Disney Infinity Delayed

Disney Infinity has been delayed by a month, meaning the game will now be available in North America from August 18 and in Europe from August 20.

The news comes courtesy of The New York Times, which reports that Disney made the decision due to the later date being “more favorable”.

Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants explained, “We could deliver in June if we wanted to. Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops.”

The game was originally planned to release in June to tie into Monsters University hitting screens. The fact that it’s been pushed back means it may now go head to head with the release of the next iteration of Skylanders, Swap Force, which is due out in the tail end of the year.
