Statham vs. Hardy in Escape from New York

A new report suggests that Jason Statham and Tom Hardy will duke it out for the starring role of Snake Plissken in the upcoming Escape from New York remake.

According to New York Daily News, Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner were originally thought to be in the running for the part made famous by Kurt Russell in the 1981 original, but it sounds like plans have changed since Studio Canal took over the project from New Line back in 2011.

The Croods Tops Box Office

DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods enjoyed a healthy debut this weekend, topping the box office with $44.7 million, just slightly ahead of what DWA’s How to Train Your Dragon opened with (but with far less glowing reviews than that 2010 release).

The “Die Hard in the White House” action thriller Olympus Has Fallen was good news for its struggling star Gerard Butler, debuting in second place with a rugged $30.5 million.

The Tina Fey-Paul Rudd dramedy Admission had a soft bow in fifth place, while Spring Breakers expanded in limited release up to sixth place.

Review: 'Olympus' is tense yet generic

In a week when North Korea posted a homemade video showing the U.S. Capitol building being destroyed by a missile, what more logical response could Hollywood offer than a macho thriller about a Secret Service agent who takes on North Korean terrorists who attack the White House? The first of two similarly themed action dramas set for this year (“White House Down” arrives in June), “Olympus Has Fallen” will put to the test the question of whether American audiences are ready, 12 years after 9-11, to watch, strictly as disposable popcorn entertainment, a film in which the United States and some of its most prominent landmarks are devastated by foreign terrorists.

The answer almost undoubtedly will be yes, as the tough-guy former agent played by Gerard Butler gets to kick a whole lot of badass butt while trying to rescue the president. Although this is the sort of film in which the fate of the world hinges, when all is said and done, on the outcome of a one-on-one martial arts contest, director Antoine Fuqua‘s notably bloody child of Die Hard still generates a fair amount of tension and produces the kind of nationalistic outrage that rock-ribbed Americans will feel in their guts. Foreign revenue should be hefty as well, especially in countries where many viewers will get a thrill watching Washington get the sort of treatment usually reserved for places like Baghdad and Kabul.

Either due to incredible clairvoyance on the parts of first-time screenwriters Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt or just through one of those twists of fate, the film arrives just as North Korea has made anti-U.S. saber-rattling an almost daily exercise. So it seems uncannily timely that the brilliant bad guy here is a (supposedly) rogue North Korean who leads a bunch of skilled commandos on a raid of the White House that nets them the president and several key members of his staff as hostages. No doubt bootleg copies of the film will make their way to Kim Jong Un, who might be simultaneously offended and delighted at the opportunity to further rouse his subjects by showing them how much the enemy hates them.

At its core, however, “Olympus” is like an ’80s or ’90s genre item in which Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson outwitted and outmuscled shrewd, more formidably armed opponents. Like Eastwood in “In the Line of Fire,” Butler (who also produced) plays a disgraced presidential agent sidelined and haunted by a fluky failure (detailed in a 10-minute prologue) who suddenly and inadvertently finds himself back in the thick of a crisis.

If seemingly far-fetched, the attack by the North Korean paramilitary team is nonetheless ingenious and pulled off …read more

Olympus Has Fallen Review

By Jim Vejvoda

The action-thriller Olympus Has Fallen is a far better Die Hard movie than the one released last month. That’s not to say this film isn’t without its ludicrous moments and formulaic faults, but Olympus Has Fallen is still a solid, old school action-thriller featuring a fine cast and a sincere execution by director Antoine Fuqua that lifts it above other fare of this sort.

Gerard Butler stars as Secret Service agent Mike Banning, a tough but reliable bloke who serves on the personal protection detail of President Ben Asher (Aaron Eckhart). He’s not just the President’s bodyguard, but also a close friend to both him and his young son Connor (Finley Jacobsen).

Joel Silver on Escape from New York Remake

They’re talking about remaking Escape from New York again.

This has come up before, most recently in 2010, but also back in 2007 when (gulp) Len Wiseman and Gerard Butler were attached. But now Deadline says that Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures is joining with Studio Canal to create a rebooted franchise based on the John Carpenter classic. Silver wants a new take on the story and is planning a trilogy, which will start with an origin story, presumably of Snake Plissken. The search for a writer is already happening.

Call me crazy, but wasn’t one of the appeals of the original film and Kurt Russell’s Snake the fact that he was kind of mysterious? We knew a bit about his past, but there were enough gaps there that allowed us to fill it all in with our imaginations while he searched for Donald Pleasence‘s missing president in the mean streets of 1997 Manhattan. An origin story could defuse all that.

Olympus Has Fallen: Die Hard in D.C.

IGN got to attend an edit bay visit last week for the upcoming action thriller Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler as a Secret Service agent out to save President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) from the terrorists who have laid waste to the White House. The Film District release, which opens March 22, was directed by Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua who was on hand to present some footage from his film for the invited press.

Despite the fantastical premise, Fuqua and his team strove for reality in their depiction of the Secret Service and the White House, and were granted access to observe and recreate certain protocols and locations used in the safekeeping of the President, most notably the PEOC (Presidental Emergency Operations Center), which is essentially the White House panic room-meets-secret command and control center.
