Abuse Jar Jar in Angry Birds Star Wars 2

These days, if you’ve got a popular mainstream kids property, you’re finding ways to tie the sale of physical toys and games together. Skylanders did it, Disney soon followed, and now it looks like we’re adding Rovio’s Angry Birds to the list. I got to see it all for myself in a hands-on demo of Angry Birds Star Wars II here at San Diego Comic-Con.

The physical play sets, where you slingshot a Luke Skywalker bird at a Death Star-shaped pile of bricks, isn’t new. Neither is the digital experience on the iPad. For Angry Birds Star Wars II, Rovio is bringing the two experiences together, letting players use their physical toys in the tablet version of the game.

The new playsets, which retail for $14.99, will include a single iconic structure, such as a Star Destroyer, as well as a slingshot and two characters. Smaller packs of two characters will also be available for $4.99. You can use these to smash up the regular structures, but to make the most of the new toys, you’ll want to break out the new iPad app (due out September 19).

Dark Horse Chronicles "The Star Wars"

Dark Horse has launched a number of new Star Wars comics in 2013, including Brian Wood‘s post-Episode IV-era Star Wars and Gabriel Hardman’s Star Wars Legacy sequel. But the publisher has announced a new Star Wars project that easily ranks as one of their most unexpected and unique to date. We’d almost expect this was an April Fool’s Day joke if it weren’t first revealed at WonderCon yesterday.

Dark Horse‘s newest comic is called “The Star Wars.” This eight-issue mini-series is adapted from George Lucas‘ original screenplay draft of what would eventually become the original Star Wars film we all know and love. The Star Wars features Annikin Starkiller and his family as the main characters, along with a number of other familiar elements that would be reworked in later drafts. For example, Luke Skywalker is a respected Jedi general, Han Solo is a reptilian alien, and the Sith Knights and their Death Star are the great menace to the galaxy.

Turns Out Darth Vader Blew Up the Death Star

Inspired by Loose Change, a 9/11 conspiracy theory video series, Luke’s Change is all about the real force behind the destruction of the Death Star. It’s, of course, a parody of the very idea of conspiracy theorists — but it’s also kind of great. Take a look:

Star Wars' Original Cast a Death Star for Disney?

By Steve Symington, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Earlier this week, the entertainment world was abuzz with excitement following comments from Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher — also known as Princess Leia.

The rumor mill
But first, here’s some background for those of you who haven’t been keeping track.

Star Wars rumors have been swirling since last November, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion and wasted no time announcing plans for a Star Wars: Episode VII movie, slated for release in 2015.

Shortly afterward, a “highly placed source” told Entertainment Weekly that Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill were all “upbeat” about the prospects of reprising their respective roles as Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker.

Commence nerdy meltdowns:

Now fast-forward to this week.

When asked during an interview if she could confirm whether she would return to as Leia in the new sequelFisher simply replied, “Yes.” Then she jokingly suggested Leia will be elderly, “in an intergalactic old folks’ home, [and] just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.”

Of course, Fisher’s rep later quickly tried to douse the rumors, insisting she was only kidding about the role.

Meet your maker
Then George Lucas himself stepped out and matter-of-factly told Bloomberg Businessweek that Hamill, Fisher, and Ford are ready to suit up. Apparently, according to Lucas, all three were on board even before Disney’s acquisition of his company:

We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison — or we were pretty much in the final stages of negotiation. Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them. I won’t say whether negotiations were successful or not.

It’s OK, George. We forgive you.

But this is an investing site, right?
So who wins in this scenario? Arguably everyone.

Aside from the fact Fisher, Hamill, and Ford were almost certainly lured in part by massive paydays, it’s safe to say Disney probably knows better than any other company the long-term value of stirring excitement for an iconic brand.

In fact, that’s one big reason I recently offered Disney as a viable option for investors looking for stocks to hold for the next 50 years

Fortunately for Disney investors, its most recent big buy is looking like an even better deal by the day; just last week, Disney also announced that it’s working on two additional Star Wars character-specific spin-off movies to be released after Episode VII. With more than 17,000 Star Wars characters in the Star Wars Universe from several thousand planets covering a span of 20,000 years, Disney has plenty of new material on which to chew — and a loyal fan base that’ll eat up every bit of it.

If that weren’t enough, thanks to Disney’s $4 billion acquisition in 2009 of comics powerhouse Marvel — which boasts its own library of more than 9,000 characters — the House of Mouse has a whole …read more

The Clone Wars: Ahsoka and Tarkin at Odds

This past weekend, Star Wars: The Clone Wars began its big final story arc for Season 5, and, as viewers saw, there were many casualties — including Jedi, clones and civilians — when an explosion tore through the Jedi Temple hanger.

IGN has an exclusive clip from this coming Saturday’s episode, “The Jedi Who Knew Too Much”, as this story continues. Anakin and Ashoka have captured Letta, the woman seemingly responsible for the attack. But who should make the final call on her guilt and her potential punishment? As you can see in this clip, Ahsoka and Tarkin, a rather ambitious Republic military leader, have very different viewpoints on this. And where does Anakin stand, given he’s so close with Ahsoka, while his destiny is tied in with the future Grand Moff Tarkin, who will one day command the Death Star?

Death Star vs. X-Wing Kickstarters Strike Fear into the Galaxy

If the internet is to be believed, the Galactic Empire is using Kickstarter to crowd-fund the construction of a new Death Star. Now, in a show of heroism and force, the Rebel Alliance has struck back with a Kickstarter of its own, seeking to raise funds to build a squadron of X-Wing Fighters.

This of course comes after the White House declined to fund work on a new Death Star, which didn’t win Washington any friends among the Empire.

What is Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime?

Here’s a thing about indie development that’s pretty darned ace. The way these guys cobble their games together with stringy bits of cultural detritus, lost weekends at game-jams, vaguely appropriate skill-mishmashings and on-the-fly working relationships that just flourish without the aid of a HR minder or a mission-statement.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a cracking example of this binding together of illogical, ill-fitting parts into something completely coherent. It’s set on a Death Star-type craft, but the colors are more Powerpuff Girls than brooding space-opera. Its major influences range from Space Battleship Yamato and Sailor Moon to Canadian folk music and Jean-Luc Picard. Game-wise it’s part Asteroids, part Jumpman and part Katamari Damarcy.

The Best Crowdfunding Project Yet: The Kickstarter To Build The Death Star

Oh yes, I think this is glorious. There’s a Kickstarter project looking to build the Death Star. How 'Return of the Jedi' Should Have Ended

By Carol Pinchefsky, Contributor Star Wars: Return of the Jedi ended on many happy notes: The rebels won. The second Death Star was destroyed. YouTubers HISHEdotcom believe that they have the ending that makes the most sense to them.

Empire Slams Obama's Death Star Rejection

By Matt Cantor Did the White House just make a grave mistake? Petition-Weary White House Changes Rules

By Evann Gastaldo Sorry, but the White House won’t be responding to any more Death Star construction requests —at least, not unless they get 100,000 signatures. Yesterday, the White House raised the 25,000-signature threshold previously required to get an official administration response to a petition submitted on the “We the People”…

Empire Responds to White House on Death Star

Last week the Obama Administration, in a grand show of humor, responded to an online request to have the United States military build a Death Star. The online petition is a part of the administration’s citizen feedback initiative: We the People.

Essentially, constituents are invited to file petitions on WhiteHouse.gov, and when one reaches 25,000 signatures or more, the White House is required to respond. One such petition, “Secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016″ (not surprisingly) reached nearly 35,000 signatures. Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch of the White House Office of Management and Budget, responded with a Star Wars fancentric denial entitled: “This isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For.”
