New Star Wars Movies Every Summer as of 2015

At the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas today, Disney and Lucasfilm revealed that beginning in 2015 with Star Wars: Episode VII, a new film set in the galaxy created by George Lucas will be released each summer

J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII will come first in the summer of 2015 and will be followed every summer after with another new Star Wars movie, alternating between the standalone films we’ve heard about and the new trilogy that begins with Episode VII.

Wow.

As for what those standalone films will be — among the rumored projects have been a Yoda flick, young Han Solo adventures, and my favorite, a Seven Samurai-type Jedi film — we still don’t know. But, of course, more on this when we have it…

Defiance: Series Premiere Review

Advance Review: Few ideas are original, but the first episode of the new Syfy show Defiance relies heavily upon tropes and archetypes to introduce its new world. You have a reluctant hero who feels like Han Solo, a pair of star-crossed lovers that feel like they were written by Shakespeare — hell, you even have a species that’s the equivalent of Wookiees. Unoriginality alone doesn’t mean a bad story, but Defiance stumbles when it becomes utterly predictable, with some cliche and downright cheesy dialogue that crosses the line between charmingly campy and cringe-inducing.

Defiance is set on a not-too-distant Earth where humans and a number of alien species collectively known as the Votan have reached an armistice after many years of war. Earth has been partially terraformed, and in the aftermath of the war the various species of the world try to scratch out a living in a world that’s more akin the American frontier than the future. More specifically, they’re trying to make things work in the titular city of Defiance, named after a key battle in Earth’s past where the aliens and humans both decided to stop fighting and end the violence. It’s a setup that’s right up my alley, and immediately familiar as a fan of Firefly. The initial exposition doesn’t waste any time, either, instead just launching you into the future after only the briefest of introductions. It works in this case because bits and pieces of the world’s backstory are presented throughout the rest of the episode, but it leaves just enough unanswered questions to make me want to learn more.

Billy Dee Williams Wants to Be in Episode VII

No duh, right?

Everyone’s so concerned about Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher‘s return to Star Wars with Episode VII that some of the other very important characters of the galaxy far, far away have gotten pushed to the side a bit. I mean, where’s the Bring Back Lak Sivrak campaign anyway?

But somewhere between that long lost galactic Wolfman and Han Solo there lays the Landos and Threepios of the world. And in fact, both Lando — that is, Billy Dee Williams — and old Goldenrod himself — Anthony Daniels — have spoken out recently about their status vis-a-vis Episode VII.

Here’s what Williams said in a new Facebook post.

Harrison Ford Talks Han Solo And New ‘Star Wars’ Films On ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Harrison Ford talked Han Solo on “Late Show with David Letterman.” With news of “Star Wars” sequels making the rounds, there has been a lot of speculation that Ford might reprise his iconic role in new films. When Letterman asked him about the rumors though, Ford didn’t exactly sound like he was on board.

““I was only in three,” he said. “You follow what I’m saying?”

“You don’t want to be in another one?” Letterman asked him.

2 Highflying Dow Stocks to Buy Today

By Anders Bylund, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Past performance is never a guarantee of future success. But some stocks rise for good reason. Here are two Dow Jones stocks that are chasing all-time highs as we speak — without getting expensive in the process. These are momentum stocks of exceptionally high quality, and they may never be this cheap again.

If you need another indication that the market is firing on all cylinders, consider this: 15 of the 30 Dow components trade within 10% of their all-time highs right now.

Health insurance giant UnitedHealth set its all-time record in December of 2005. Then the company was hit with an options-backdating scandal that ultimately displaced its CEO, an industrywide bout of investor skepticism, and, of course, the pitch-black recession shared by the rest of the known universe.

Now UnitedHealth is back in record-level neighborhood and looking stronger than before. You can — and probably should — buy this stock right now.

UNH data by YCharts.

Since its fall from the original summit, UnitedHealth has reshaped its business plan, increased dividend payments nearly eightfold, and finally joined the elite Dow index. It’s a longtime and extremely successful recommendation of two Foolish newsletters and has a perfect five-star CAPS rating to boot. The reasons to buy this stock pile up to the rafters of Wall Street and Main Street alike.

Walt Disney is a more obvious success story. This stock hit its lifelong peak as recently as last month and has crushed the Dow by more than tripling in price over the last decade. Is the Mouse bound to run out of steam, or can you still buy the stock at current prices?

DIS data by YCharts.

I think it’s pretty obvious that the best is yet to come. Disney thrives on game-changing acquisitions like its Pixar and Marvel buyouts. Pixar still churns out surefire hits like clockwork, the benefits of the Marvel buy are still unfolding, and now Han Solo has joined the party in the recent Lucasfilm buyout. It’s like pouring nitroglycerin on the fire.

Mickey Mouse is shrinking in the Disney universe as he becomes surrounded by equally powerful consumer-attention magnets. The character stable is becoming as diversified as the business operations, which include movies, TV content, cruise ships, theme parks, lunch boxes, and more. It’ll take a meltdown of epic proportions to stop this gravy train.

So if you’re looking for stocks to buy right now, you really can’t go wrong with these two winners. They’re rising for a reason and won’t be going back down.

It’s easy to forget that Walt Disney is more than just the House of Mouse. Much of Disney’s allure for investors lies in its diversity, and The Motley Fool’s premium research report lays out the case for investing in Disney today. This report includes the key items investors must watch, as well as the opportunities and threats the company faces going …read more

Dark Horse Chronicles "The Star Wars"

Dark Horse has launched a number of new Star Wars comics in 2013, including Brian Wood‘s post-Episode IV-era Star Wars and Gabriel Hardman’s Star Wars Legacy sequel. But the publisher has announced a new Star Wars project that easily ranks as one of their most unexpected and unique to date. We’d almost expect this was an April Fool’s Day joke if it weren’t first revealed at WonderCon yesterday.

Dark Horse‘s newest comic is called “The Star Wars.” This eight-issue mini-series is adapted from George Lucas‘ original screenplay draft of what would eventually become the original Star Wars film we all know and love. The Star Wars features Annikin Starkiller and his family as the main characters, along with a number of other familiar elements that would be reworked in later drafts. For example, Luke Skywalker is a respected Jedi general, Han Solo is a reptilian alien, and the Sith Knights and their Death Star are the great menace to the galaxy.

Harrison Ford Talks Star Wars: Episode VII

Poor Harrison Ford! After decades of suffering through them, he now has to put up with even more Han Solo questions than ever before. And we’re to blame too. You, me, the whole Internet — we’re the problem!

Anyway, Ford was in Chicago this week when a local TV reporter hit him with the big Star Wars question. The reporter asks if the “old gang” is getting back together for the new movie, to which Ford very carefully replies, “I think it’s almost true. I think… I’m looking forward to it. It’s not in the bag yet, but I think it’s happening.”

Dow Spotlight Stock of the Week: Walt Disney

By Matt Thalman, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Last week I highlighted Home Depot and how its recently announced $17 billion share buyback program would possibly affect the company moving forward. Today, I’d like to stick with how a company’s capital allocation may affect long-term shareholder value. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how Walt Disney‘s purchase of Lucasfilm has the potential to provide great returns to investors and one rising threat to Mickey’s dominance.

But first, Disney has performed well thus far in 2013, and at this time investors would have been better suited buying shares of Disney as opposed to a typical index fund. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average is currently up an impressive 9.87%, shares of Disney have risen 15.26% year to date. That kind of performance has also made Mickey the third best performing Dow component of 2013.

The company has a strong diversified revenue stream, which has proved itself capable of overcoming economic downturns. In its most recent quarterly filing, Disney reported that its parks and resorts unit brought in $3.3 billion, or 30% of the total quarterly revenue; media networks attracted the most revenue, with $5.1 billion, or 45% total quarterly revenue; and studio entertainment had revenue of $1.5 billion, or 13% of the total.

Disney’s studio entertainment revenue is the only area that experienced revenue decline on a quarterly year-over-year basis. The inconsistent nature of the movie industry may be one reason Disney has purchased a number of known entertainment franchises over the past few years. Back in 2010 the company bought Marvel Entertainment, best known for the Marvel Comic books and characters the company has developed over the years. Marvel was a well-established brand, from which Disney could easily take known characters and stories and turn them into movies, merchandise, and, most importantly, cash with very little effort and risk.

But anytime something new is attempted, hiccups are to be expected. Disney’s Marvel misstep was the John Carter debacle, but things quickly turned around, and the idea of taking known characters has played out very well for Disney in The Avengers.

Lucasfilm
With the purchase of Lucasfilm, Disney now has another franchise that is not only well established and known throughout the world but also has a ravenous fan following. When Disney made the purchase for slightly more than $4 billion, it announced that Star Wars: Episode VII will be released sometime in 2015. It has been estimated that the previous six episodes have brought in more than $30 billion in revenue.

If Episode VII performs similarly to the others, this one movie — if the cost of producing the film doesn’t run over $1 billion — could essentially pay for the entire Star Wars franchise. From the get-go, the film already seems to be building steam and could perform as well as, if not better than, the previous six episodes. This week it was announced that the original actors who played Han Solo, …read more

Star Wars' Original Cast a Death Star for Disney?

By Steve Symington, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Earlier this week, the entertainment world was abuzz with excitement following comments from Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher — also known as Princess Leia.

The rumor mill
But first, here’s some background for those of you who haven’t been keeping track.

Star Wars rumors have been swirling since last November, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion and wasted no time announcing plans for a Star Wars: Episode VII movie, slated for release in 2015.

Shortly afterward, a “highly placed source” told Entertainment Weekly that Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill were all “upbeat” about the prospects of reprising their respective roles as Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker.

Commence nerdy meltdowns:

Source: Fanboys movie

Now fast-forward to this week.

When asked during an interview if she could confirm whether she would return to as Leia in the new sequelFisher simply replied, “Yes.” Then she jokingly suggested Leia will be elderly, “in an intergalactic old folks’ home, [and] just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.”

Of course, Fisher’s rep later quickly tried to douse the rumors, insisting she was only kidding about the role.

Meet your maker
Then George Lucas himself stepped out and matter-of-factly told Bloomberg Businessweek that Hamill, Fisher, and Ford are ready to suit up. Apparently, according to Lucas, all three were on board even before Disney’s acquisition of his company:

We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison — or we were pretty much in the final stages of negotiation. Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them. I won’t say whether negotiations were successful or not.

It’s OK, George. We forgive you.

But this is an investing site, right?
So who wins in this scenario? Arguably everyone.

Aside from the fact Fisher, Hamill, and Ford were almost certainly lured in part by massive paydays, it’s safe to say Disney probably knows better than any other company the long-term value of stirring excitement for an iconic brand.

In fact, that’s one big reason I recently offered Disney as a viable option for investors looking for stocks to hold for the next 50 years

Fortunately for Disney investors, its most recent big buy is looking like an even better deal by the day; just last week, Disney also announced that it’s working on two additional Star Wars character-specific spin-off movies to be released after Episode VII. With more than 17,000 Star Wars characters in the Star Wars Universe from several thousand planets covering a span of 20,000 years, Disney has plenty of new material on which to chew — and a loyal fan base that’ll eat up every bit of it.

If that weren’t enough, thanks to Disney’s $4 billion acquisition in 2009 of comics powerhouse Marvel — which boasts its own library of more than 9,000 characters — the House of Mouse has a whole …read more

Princess Leia, Golden Arches Help the Dow Set its 4th Record

By Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The string of record-high closes for the Dow Jones Industrials reached four today, as the Dow climbed 68 points on the heels of a strong employment report. Some economists downplayed the report, arguing that it doesn’t yet fully incorporate the impact of higher tax rates for 2013 as well as other looming threats, like government spending cuts under the sequester. Yet, investors weren’t inclined to worry too much about those future fears, instead taking the S&P 500 to within 1% of its record-high close back in 2007.

Within the Dow, Disney was the top gainer. The stock rocketed higher by almost 2% after the company announced that the next installment of the Star Wars saga would feature original Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher, along with Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill, who played Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, respectively. With billions of moviegoers waiting impatiently for the seventh film in the series, Disney has some serious star power to send the movie into hyperdrive.

McDonald’s climbed 1.7% after announcing its sales results for the month of February. Even though same-store sales disturbingly fell again, one thing to note is that last February had 29 days due to the 2012 leap year. Once you take out that impact, same-store sales worldwide were actually up 1.7%. Still, the domestic introduction of Fish McBites, and other attempts to boost revenue, didn’t produce the results that the company had hoped for. The company needs to reawaken growth in order to sustain its share-price gains.

Trucking giant Navistar jumped another 11%, adding to its 28% gain yesterday. As often happens, an analyst upgrade provided a second leg up for the stock after the company’s strong earnings results prompted yesterday’s rise. With activist investor Carl Icahn involved in the stock and endorsing the company’s new CEO, Navistar appears to have made big strides in turning itself around.

Finally, Hecla Mining rebounded 4% after a big drop earlier in the week after the company made a bid for Aurizon Mines. Investors were initially worried that Hecla may have overpaid for the company in its attempt to outbid Alamos Gold, but an analyst upgrade suggested that the acquisition may actually add value for Hecla going forward.

Mark Hamill on Star Wars: Episode VII

Recent reports have surfaced that Harrison Ford is indeed set to return for Star Wars: Episode VII and that the film will focus on the Skywalker and Solo children. Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, spoke to Entertainment Tonight recently to clarify his involvement and talk a bit about the possible return of Luke, Leia and Han Solo.

“They’re talking to us,” he said. “George

wanted to know whether we’d be interested. He did say that if we didn’t want to do it, they wouldn’t cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven’t signed any contracts. We’re in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed — on their end, not mine. They’re more busy than I am.”

Momoa Reportedly Cast in Marvel's Guardians

The casting on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues, with Jason Momoa reportedly winning the role of the green-skinned Drax the Destroyer.

Latino Review, who are having quite a day between this and their Han Solo scoop, says that the Conan and Game of Thrones actor was in London to screen-test for the part on Wednesday. Isaiah Mustafa, Dave Bautista and Brian Patrick reportedly also tested for the role, but according to LR‘s sources, “Momoa’s screen test went so good that Marvel offered him the part and his reps have now countered, so the negotiations are ongoing.”
