Studios Are Going With Even More Untested Directors For Their Biggest Blockbusters

By Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes Staff

One of the questions I heard over and over at press conferences at this year’s Comic-Con was, “How does working on a movie with a huge budget differ from the other work you’ve done?”  That’s because so many of the directors helming movies with budgets north of $100 million are coming from TV and the indie world. …read more

Ryse Looks for Redemption

While there’s a lot to like about the visuals and the subject matter, Microsoft’s Roman-era third-person action game for Xbox One did not, by many accounts, demo well at E3 last month. For an epic focused on visually stunning cinematic melee combat, the seemingly scripted combat sequences left me and many other gamers feeling less than enthusiastic. The developers of Ryse immediately assured me that the combat is varied and dynamic, but after seeing and playing the demo at Comic Con, I’m not sure the message is coming through.

The demo shows the same Cliffs of Dover level, which is very clearly a sort of Classical Era D-Day, complete with galleys surging through the surf, legionaries storming up the beach, and, believe it or not, a close call with an artillery shell that layers a familiar gauzed, muffled filter over the subsequent action. It’s not so much Spartacus as it is Saving Private Marius. The team admits to a bit of historical reinterpretation and abstraction for the sake of improving the game’s story, but won’t say more on that subject for fear of spoiling some future surprises.

Superhero Style: See What All the Celebs Wore to Comic-Con

By Justin Fenner

Some of Hollywood’s brightest and most stylish stars invaded San Diego over the weekend for Comic-Con. And while the convention regularly plays host to comic book and movie fans who dress up like their favorite fantasy characters, it’s also home to some serious fashion plates. All eyes were on Hailee Steinfeld when she wore a Fall 2013 Kenzo dress, a red creation covered in an ocular motif, at an event for fans of her movie Ender’s Game. True Blood‘s Anna Paquin wore a not-so-basic black ensemble to sign autographs, and Zoe Saldana attended a press event for Marvel Studios wearing a stunning blue jumpsuit.

A look at those outfits and more style stars at the convention, here in the gallery.

John Lewis Comic-Con Appearance Draws Long Line Of Visitors (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

After a month that saw Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) at an emotional peak in Washington over the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act decision, the Congressman entered a completely different venue to promote a unique book educating Americans on his civil rights struggle.

Fox 5 San Diego reports that Lewis was at Comic-Con this weekend to promote “March” — a graphic novel he co-wrote with aide Andrew Aydin, describing his life fighting through segregated times in the South.

Roll Call adds that reaction to Lewis’ arrival included lots of praise, as more than 100 folks camped out in anticipation of his appearance.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ At Comic-Con: Joe And Anthony Russo On Directing The Next ‘Cap Adventure

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The first “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” footage had its Hall H Comic-Con premiere on Saturday night and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. What’s already apparent is that this ‘Cap will be heavy on S.H.I.E.L.D. and, as co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo explain, will bridge the two Avengers movies, creating a “very strong hand off.”

I met with the Russo brothers here in San Diego shortly before their Hall H panel to talk about their highly anticipated sequel and just how two directors who are best known for their work on “Community,” “Arrested Development” and the Owen Wilson movie “You, Me and Dupree” found themselves in the directors’ chairs for a big budget Captain America movie.

I have to admit, after watching “You, Me, and Dupree,” I didn’t think a future step would be a Captain America movie.

First Guardians of the Galaxy Footage Shown

We got our first look at Guardians of the Galaxy today at the Marvel Comic-Con panel, and this despite the fact that the film has only been shooting for a couple of weeks. But hey, this is Comic-Con — you gotta show something!

And what producer Kevin Feige, director James Gunn, and the cast did have to show the crowd was pretty great. Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord is not earthbound when we first see him in this sizzle reel, even though he is very clearly of Earth. He has an iPod, listens to “Hooked on a Feeling” (which becomes the main music of the piece eventually), and can give the finger with the best of them. He gets caught stealing some kind of alien orb and is arrested by Djimon Hounsou’s Korath (revealed as a member of the cast just tonight).

Winter Soldier Footage Reaction

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con this evening, we got to see Captain America put his Super Soldier skills to work, big time. But watch out — some spoilers for Winter Soldier follow.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, introduced the cast of the film — Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, and Emily VanCamp, plus directors Anthony and Joe Russo — before showing a sizzle reel that knocked the crowd’s socks off. It also knocked a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on their asses, as a matter of fact.

The first portion of the reel features Cap getting into an elevator at what appears to be S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. He’s in his full S.H.I.E.L.D. style uniform, and as other agents board the elevator at different floors, Cap notices one guy sweating, another’s hand sort of hanging near his holster, and so on. Something is wrong, and after the lift is full of agents (including Frank Grillo’s Crossbones), he says, “Before we do this, does anyone want to get out?” Then a full-on fight breaks out, with Cap greatly outnumbered and seemingly beaten from the moment it starts — headlocked, pinned, and getting hit with electrically charged stun sticks. One of his hands is pinned to the wall by a magnetic handcuff, but Cap still fights off his attackers with his remaining available hand. It’s all quickly cut and edgy type stuff, less superhero-ish than Bourne.

Matt Smith On His ‘Doctor Who’ Departure And His Possible Return To The Show At Comic-Con (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

This will likely be Matt Smith‘s last Comic-Con as the titular character in BBC’s long-running hit “Doctor Who” and the actor is struggling to say goodbye. At Entertainment Weekly’s Brave New Warriors panel (above), which also included Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”) Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”), David Guintoli (“Grimm”) and Steven Yeun (“The Walking Dead”), the actor opened up about leaving the show after the 2013 Christmas special at the end of the year.

“It’s been four years and the best four years. It’s been wonderful. It’s been a privilege to work with [executive producer] Steven Moffat, but I think, ‘When you got to go, you go to go,'” Smith explained to the crowd, eliciting many exclamatory sounds from the audience. “It’s sad and I’m going to miss it. I’m going to miss Comic-Con — I love Comic-Con. The world should be more like Comic-Con. It wasn’t an easy decision to come to, but … you can’t play it forever. And look, they’ll get someone amazing [to play the Doctor]. They’ll get someone brilliant to do it. They really will. And that’s the great thing about the show is that it continues, and the strength of it survives, and it’ll get better, and it’ll get bigger, and it’ll keep up, and you’ll forget about me.” Cue even more “no’s” and “aw’s” from the crowd.

Smith went on to say that he’s having trouble hearing about how “Doctor Who” will go on once he’s left. “Steven Moffat was actually pitching all the episode ideas for next season to me last night — that was really hard,” he admitted.
