Halo Goes Ongoing at Dark Horse

One of the bigger announcements to come out of C2E2 this past spring was the news that Dark Horse Comics has acquired the rights to the Halo franchise. The new arrangement kicks off next month with the release of Halo: Initiation #1. Initiation is a prequel mini-series to Halo 4, focusing on Sarah Palmer as she works her way up the ranks of the new Spartan-IV program.

But the Halo universe is too big for one mini-series. Accordingly, Dark Horse revealed the next stage of their Halo plans at SDCC yesterday. Halo: Escalation is a new series that picks up where Halo 4 left off. Escalation also has the distinction of being the first ongoing Halo comic book. The series will again star Spartan Palmer, as well as Thomas Lasky, the Arbiter, and various other Halo mainstays. The book will be written by Halo 4 lead writer Chris Schlerf. Omar Francia (Mass Effect) will provide interior art for the first three-issue story arc, while Anthony Palumbo (Dragon Age) is handling the cover art.

Watch This Sweet Star Wars Comic Book Trailer

Last year, Dark Horse Comics published one of the best Star Wars comics of the last decade — Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison by Haden Blackman and Agustin Alessio. Early in the years of the Empire, the Rebellion is slowly gaining steam and an assassination attempt on Emperor Palpatine leaves Vader with only an upstart Imperial cadet as an ally to quell the uprising.

The series garnered much acclaim, even getting a nod in IGN’s Best of 2012 Awards for Best Comic Book Mini-Series. This April, Dark Horse will be publishing a new hardcover collection for the series and to celebrate, the publisher has put together a badass new trailer, using 3D images rendered straight from Alessio’s original interior artwork.

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia Review

I could start out this review by professing my love for the Legend of Zelda franchise and reflecting on how long it’s been a part of my gaming history, but who couldn’t say the same? Anyone whose gaming ambition extends beyond a few rounds of Wii Sports Tennis has likely sampled at least one of the games in the franchise. The games cater to an innate love of exploration and adventure that all humans share. Everybody loves the Legend of Zelda. It’s an empirical fact.

But for all the massive and enduring popularity the games enjoy, Nintendo has rarely made an effort to peel back the curtain and allow gamers a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes process and development that produces them. They tend to prefer to play everything pretty close to the vest. That’s what makes the Hyrule Historia such a treat. This handsome hardcover tome is devoted entirely towards exploring and celebrating the long history of the franchise, with hundreds of images of concept designs, character art, screen captures, and other artwork from every major game in the series. The book was originally released in Japan to coincide with the release of Skyward Sword, and Dark Horse Comics and a team of English translators have finally brought it to our shores.

American McGee’s latest PC offering, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters — which is currently raising funds on Kickstarter — is getting its very own comic book mini-series courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, also known for their other successful comic book/video game tie-ins like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Written by Justin Aclin with art by Vasilis Lolos, Akaneiro #1 is the first of three issues to explore American McGee’s re-imagining of the Red Riding Hood legend within Japanese folklore.

Dark Horse was kind enough to provide us with the first look at the first cover for the series and some character design sketches:
