First Guardians of the Galaxy Footage Shown

We got our first look at Guardians of the Galaxy today at the Marvel Comic-Con panel, and this despite the fact that the film has only been shooting for a couple of weeks. But hey, this is Comic-Con — you gotta show something!

And what producer Kevin Feige, director James Gunn, and the cast did have to show the crowd was pretty great. Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord is not earthbound when we first see him in this sizzle reel, even though he is very clearly of Earth. He has an iPod, listens to “Hooked on a Feeling” (which becomes the main music of the piece eventually), and can give the finger with the best of them. He gets caught stealing some kind of alien orb and is arrested by Djimon Hounsou’s Korath (revealed as a member of the cast just tonight).

Here're Some Guardians of the Galaxy Details

Very little has been revealed about Marvel and James Gunn‘s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but now a casting call has offered some spoilerific insight into some of the film’s characters.

Read at your own peril, as per Universal Extras:

  • The Core: For the new Marvel super hero film we are looking for males and females who are seasoned professional SAs to be a core group of people who will be used for a variety of different roles throughout the whole of filming.
  • Being on an Alien planet: For new Marvel Super hero film about a team of super heroes who protect the Galaxy in the future of a different dimension, we are looking for males and females who are amputees.

    Gunn: Rocket Raccoon "The Heart" of Guardians

    Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has been discussing his forthcoming superhero flick, revealing that he has been hanging out with actual racoons in preparation for shooting a movie that revolves around one such animal.

    Calling Rocket Raccoon “the heart of the movie,” Gunn told website HeyUGuys “I’ve done a lot of studying with real raccoons, and we had real raccoons come in. We’ve done photography with them, I’ve played with racoons, and fed raccoons, and dealt with a lot of real raccoons to get the behaviour down, because it’s really, really important to me that Rocket Raccoon – who is the heart of the movie – is not a cartoon character, it’s not Bugs Bunny in the middle of The Avengers, it’s a real, little, somewhat mangled beast that’s alone. There’s no one else in the universe quite like him. He’s been created by these guys to be a mean-ass fighting machine.”

    Walking Dead's Merle Goes Marvel

    Michael Rooker, hot off his turn as Merle in The Walking Dead, has joined the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Rooker will play Yondu, one of the original Guardians from the comics.

    Deadline has the report on Rooker’s casting, which is no surprise at all considering the actor’s friendship with director James Gunn. The pair have worked together previously on Slither and Super.

    Thanos Gets a Henchman

    Every supervillain needs a toady, and it looks like Thanos may have his for James Gunn and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

    First Look at Marvel’s Phase Two Movies!

    Latino Review‘s latest Marvel scoop indicates that Basil Sandhurst, a.k.a. The Controller, will be in the studio’s big foray into cosmic storytelling, acting as Thanos’ main henchman and ambassador. Whether or not this means Thanos is actually in the film — which has been rumored — remains to be seen.

    Guardians of the Galaxy Casts Its Lead

    Marvel Studios has cast Chris Pratt (Moneyball, Zero Dark Thirty, television’s Parks and Recreation) as the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadline reports.

    The studio has been on the search for the right actor to play Starlord in Marvel’s wild card in its cinematic universe.  James Gunn will direct Pratt as the leader of the Guardians who is the child of an alien father and human mother.

    The outlet reports that Marvel made “test deals with Zero Dark Thirty‘s Joel Edgerton, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, Cloud Atlas‘ Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace (who has roles in both Lincoln and The Hobbit), and Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables. More recently, Zachary Levi was identified as a candidate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was pursued, but he has other plans.”

    Guardians of the Galaxy to Film This Summer

    Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will start filming this summer.

    ScreenDaily reports that the James Gunn-directed comic book adaptation will shoot at Pinewood-Shepperton Studios this summer. The forthcoming Thor: The Dark World was the last Marvel film to shoot there.

    No casting has been finalized yet for Guardians, which is slated for release August 1, 2014.
