ETC: Four seniors to drive around world in pair of Suzuki Jimny SUVs for charity

The Ultimate Challenge Suzuki Jimny

Filed under:

Plenty of us here at Autoblog have designs for epic drives. Whether it’s bouncing around the country in an old International or heading from Alaska to Chile on a bike, we like to think we have big aspirations. Or at least we did until we heard about these four gentlemen. You see, Leslie George Carvall, Alan Butler, Glyn Maher and Charles Scott are all in their 70’s, and they plan to pile into a pair of Suzuki Jimny SUVs and drive around the world. Sort of makes a hike across country seem like a trip down the block to the local corner store. They’re calling it “The Ultimate Challenge,” and they plan to undertake the journey for two reasons.

First, they want to prove that age shouldn’t stand in the way of people doing what they want to do. Second, the group hopes to raise funds for the ‘Heaven Can Wait I’m Busy’ group, which aims to direct money toward worthy charities both in the UK and around the world. Save the Children and Oakhaven Hospice are the two currently designated charities.

The trip gets started in just three days, and you can head over to the effort’s site to track their progress. The route should cover some 16,500 road miles and 10,375 sea miles. You can also catch up with the project on Facebook.

Bachelet announces Chile presidential bid

Former President Michelle Bachelet says she will run again for Chile‘s top office in November elections as the candidate of the country’s center-left and communist party.

Bachelet returned to Chile on Wednesday after ending a two-year stint heading the U.N. women’s agency in New York.

The former president told cheering supporters in a poor Santiago neighbhorhood that “I have taken the decision to be a candidate.”

Bachelet is widely seen as the center-left opposition’s only hope of winning the Nov. 17 presidential election.

Bachelet, 62, said that inequality is the main problem facing Chile.

Candidates must to be ready to tackle mounting social demands and frequent protests that troubled Bachelet during her 2006-2010 presidency and that have harried center-right President Sebastian Pinera even more.

Baby, mom hurt in crash that killed grandparents

Dennis and Judith Schulte had just arrived in Seattle from the Midwest, a move they made to be near their newborn grandson.

They were killed Monday when a suspected drunken driver slammed into them as they crossed a street during a walk with their grandson and his mother. The crash left the other two family members in critical condition Tuesday.

“They were so elated. This is their only grandchild,” said Judith Schulte‘s sister, Susan Morton.

Morton said the retired Indiana couple was walking with their daughter-in-law, Karina Schulte, and her 10-day-old son when they were stuck.

Mark Mullan, 50, was ordered held Tuesday on $2.5 million bail. He is being held on investigation of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. Prosecutors have until Thursday to formally charge him.

Karina Schulte “had the baby in a sling on the front. He just hit all four of them,” said Morton, of Cottonwood, Minn., in a telephone interview.

A police officer said in court documents that he smelled alcohol on Mullan’s breath and that Mullan showed impairment on sobriety tests. A preliminary test showed a breath alcohol level of 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08, the officer said.

His license was suspended at the time of the crash at an intersection in a residential neighborhood, according to the documents. “He does not have a valid license,” said Brad Benfield, a spokesman with the Department of Licensing.

Mullan told police he was unable to see the pedestrians because the sun was in his eyes, according to court documents.

It was unclear Tuesday whether Mullan had legal representation. A message left with an attorney who represented him in a drunken driving case in December was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Mullan didn’t answer reporters’ questions as police led him away from the crash scene in handcuffs Monday. Police said he stopped after the crash and was cooperative. A phone number listed for Mullan was disconnected.

Morton said Karina Schulte, a 33-year-old from Chile, works as a pediatric nurse specialist and is dedicated to her work.

Worker trapped deep in Chilean mine after collapse

Authorities in Chile say rescue workers are trying to free a man trapped 300 meters (984 feet) underground following a collapse in a mine in the same Atacama region where 33 miners were buried for 69 days in 2010.

Regional mining secretary Mario Lopez Cid says the 42-year-old miner survived the collapse in the Victoria mine, 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the city of Vallenar, by taking refuge in a secondary tunnel.

Lopez said Monday on his twitter account that the trapped miner, Mario Torres Lopez, was responding to sound signals made by rescuers.

Firefighters and special police units were trying to clear the rubble in the collapsed man by hand.

In August 2010, between Vallenar and Copiapo, a mine collapse trapped 33 workers and their rescue became news worldwide.

Chile investigate massive prawn death

Chile is investigating the death of thousands of prawns that have washed ashore, covering a beach in red.

The dead shrimp appeared Wednesday in Coronel, some 330 miles (530 kilometers) south of the capital, Santiago.

Local fishermen accuse thermoelectric plants of heating the ocean waters.

They say the Bocamina 1 and 2 plants owned by Chilean power company Colbun and the Santa Maria plant controlled by regional power generator Endesa endanger their livelihood.

Hundreds of dead crabs also washed up in the same area on shore over the weekend.

Environmental police are collecting evidence in the area and will be interviewing local fishermen and residents.

Fuel Tech Reports 2012 Fourth Quarter and Annual Financial Results

WARRENVILLE, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Fuel Tech, Inc. (NAS: FTEK) , a world leader in advanced engineering solutions for the optimization of combustion systems and emissions control in utility and industrial applications, today reported unaudited results for the three- and 12-month periods ended December 31, 2012.

Douglas G. Bailey, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “2012 was one of the more successful years in Fuel Tech‘s history, highlighted by record revenues, record bookings and year-end backlog, and expansion into new territories. We ended the year with cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities of $24.5 million, or $1.07 per diluted share, no short-term or long-term debt, and cash flow from operations of $8.7 million. Our strong financial position allowed us to return $7.9 million to our investors through our 2012 share repurchase plan and we invested $2.9 million in new product development.”

He continued, “Our Air Pollution Control (APC) segment was particularly strong in 2012, recording contract wins of $72.8 million, with much of this growth driven by our international markets. Our China-Pacific Rim business delivered solid year-over-year gains and, combined with APC‘s historic $36.6 million combustion project in Chile, helped produce 2012 fourth quarter and full-year foreign revenue growth of 121% and 55%, respectively, over the comparable prior year periods. We believe that our success in gaining a foothold in new markets favors further APC growth. We are committed to further expanding our international presence as a means of both mitigating the impact of a dynamic domestic regulatory environment and addressing the expanding global need for emissions control solutions.

“Our FUEL CHEM® business segment continues to face the challenges of low natural gas prices and reduced electricity demand. Despite lower revenues, FUEL CHEM substantially maintained its margins, which we view as a testament to the quality of our product solutions. Although we believe the macro issues facing this segment will resolve, we cannot predict when this will occur. We are continuing to pursue our pipeline of new customer, end market, and product opportunities.”

Fourth Quarter 2012

Revenues for the fourth quarter 2012 totaled $26.6 million, a 5% decrease from $28.0 million in last year’s fourth quarter. Higher APC revenues were offset by revenue declines at the FUEL CHEM segment.

Bachelet: Chile left's hope in presidential vote

Michelle Bachelet has a deep resume: daughter of a general tortured to death for opposing a coup, leftist exile during the ensuing bloody dictatorship, pediatrician, Cabinet member, mother, president, head of the U.N. women’s agency.

Now she’s coming back home after her stint at the United Nations, and if Chile‘s left has its way, she will add another item to that list: savior.

Bachelet, 62, who announced her return Friday night, is widely seen as the center-left opposition’s only hope of winning the Nov. 17 presidential election and taking power back from the conservative establishment ushered in when Sebastian Pinera won the presidency ins 2010 after she left office.

The popularity of this Andean country’s only woman president is high. A recent poll by CEP Estudios Publicos consultancy said 54 percent of voters favor her.

In announcing the end of her work at the U.N., Bachelet said only that she was going back to Chile and gave no specifics on timing.

She also did not mention the presidential race despite intense pressure in Chile for her to make her plans known — although there is a widespread expectation that she will run.

Her silence has frustrated not only her opponents but especially her sympathizers.

“We don’t have a plan B. I’m serious. In the opposition we’re just not prepared for a negative response from Bachelet,” said Jaime Quintana, president of the Liberal Party for Democracy, one of the parties in the center-left coalition.

Whoever runs will have to be ready to tackle mounting social demands and frequent protests that already troubled Bachelet during her presidency and have harried Pinera even more. Pinera is the most unpopular president since Chile returned to democracy in 1990 after the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Chile is respected for its fast-growing economy and transparent institutions. The country has continued to grow under Pinera and enjoys a record-low jobless rate, but it also has the worst inequality rate among the 34 countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Millions of Chileans have participated in protests demanding a wider distribution of Chile‘s copper riches, free education and the return of ancestral lands to Mapuche Indians in a southern region where members of Chile‘s …read more

Michelle Bachelet says she's going back to Chile

Chile‘s former president Michelle Bachelet, who has led the U.N. agency promoting women’s equality since July 2010, has announced that she plans to return home amid widespread speculation that she plans to run for president again.

Bachelet ended a speech at the closing session of a two-week meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women Friday night on a personal note saying: “This will be my last CSW. I’m going back to my country.”

She did not say when or what her future plans were.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon chose Bachelet to be the first head of UN Women, which put four U.N. bodies dealing with the advancement of women under a single umbrella.
