Report: Mercedes leads in US luxury car thefts

By Brandon Turkus

Mercedes-Benz makes some fine automobiles. The Silver Arrow’d cars are so good, apparently, that thieves can’t help but try to steal them. The German brand is at the top of the charts for luxury car thefts in the US, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with New York City leading the way. (And those New Yorkers complain about Detroit being bad!)

The C-Class was the most stolen model, with 485 ganked between 2009 and 2012 in NYC alone, while the E-Class and S-Class (which also boasted the worst recovery rate, at 59 percent) both finished in the top ten. Following the C-Class was the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G. Not surprisingly, each of these were the most common models in their respective lineups. Los Angeles and Miami are also prime hotspots for luxury car thefts, according to the Detroit News report.

While getting your car stolen is pretty awful, there was one inspiring statistic compiled by the NICB – the average recovery rate across the board was 84 percent, with the Cadillac CTS getting recovered 91 percent of the time.

'Schindler's List' reportedly to be auctioned on eBay

“Schindler’s List” is being auctioned off on eBay.

No, not a DVD of the Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg film, but one of the original Schindler’s lists — the only one ever to go on the open market — will be publicly auctioned tonight on the popular shopping Web site.

The reserve price is an eye-popping $3 million.

But its sellers, California collectors Gary Zimet and Eric Gazin, are hoping it will go for as high as $5 million.

“Enter US $3,000,000.00 or more” the listing will instruct bidders when it goes live at 9 p.m. EDT, according to an advance copy obtained by The Post.

“Free Local Pickup” the listing will advise. “Item location: Israel.”

“We decided to sell the list on eBay because it has over 100 million worldwide members, and this is a global story,” Gazin told The Post.

“There are billionaires using the site, wealthy celebrities,” said Gazin, who is the president of AuctionCause.com. “We like the platform.”

The “list” was named for Oskar Schindler, a businessman from Germany who is credited with saving more than 1,000 Jewish refugees from the Nazis by deeming them essential workers for his enamel-works factories.

Of the seven original versions of the list, only four are known to still exist — including two in Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Museum, and one in the US Holocaust Museum in Washington.

The one being offered for sale on eBay tonight is 14 onion-skin pages long.

The date April 18, 1945, is written in pencil on the first page. It lists 801 male names.

“It is extremely rare that a document of this historical significance is put on the market,” Zimet said.

“Many of the survivors on this list and their descendants moved to the United States, and there are names on this list which will sound very familiar to New Yorkers.”

Bloomberg: Take the Stairs, Fatty

Bloomberg’s latest health crusade won’t force New Yorkers to take the stairs, but it will encourage the climb. These 7 States Tax You the Hardest

By Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool

7. Minnesota, April 23
Minnesota has a relatively high combination of individual income and sales taxes, with a top income tax rate of 7.85% and a 6.875% sales tax. But its corporate income tax of 9.8% is especially high, despite the fact that top private employer Target is headquartered in Minneapolis. Even relatively low property taxes averaging just over $1,400 aren’t enough to give residents much relief.

6. California, April 24
California is notorious for having retroactively raised its income tax rates on high-income taxpayers last year, imposing a top rate of 13.3%, the highest of any state. State sales taxes of 7.5% and a fairly high corporate income tax rate also add to Californians’ tax burden, even though it hasn’t stopped many high-profile technology companies from calling the state home. Limitations on property tax increases have kept many residents from bearing the full burden of skyrocketing property values during the housing boom.

4 (tie). Massachusetts, April 25
Massachusetts has a relatively low flat income tax of 5.25%, but a recent increase in its sales tax to 6.25% boosted overall revenue. With property taxes averaging nearly $2,000, homeowners get a triple tax burden, although many financial companies maintain a strong presence in the state.

4 (tie). Illinois, April 25
Illinois closely resembles its peer Massachusetts, with a 5% flat income tax rate and the same 6.25% sales tax. A higher corporate rate offsets slightly lower property taxes, although corporate taxes didn’t stop Boeing from relocating its corporate headquarters to the state from Seattle more than a decade ago. A gasoline tax that’s in the top five in the country helps push its overall burden higher.

3. New Jersey, May 4
As we get to the three most heavily taxed states, rates for various taxes go up considerably. New Jersey boasts a top income tax rate of nearly 9%, sales taxes of 7%, and property taxes averaging more than $2,800. In addition, with a high concentration of businesses, corporate tax collections are also among the highest in the nation.

2. New York, May 6
New York‘s tax rates are actually lower than New Jersey‘s, with a top rate of about 8.8% and a 4% sales tax. Yet because of the high average income of New Yorkers, the state collects more in income tax revenue than any other state. Most cities tack on an average of nearly 4.5% in additional sales taxes, and with plenty of high-income businesses calling New York home, including Wall Street‘s most profitable institutions, the state’s corporate tax brings in the second most revenue of any state.

1. Connecticut, May 13
Again, tax rates don’t tell the whole story for Connecticut, with a modest 6.7% top income tax rate and just over $2,500 in property taxes. But high gasoline taxes combined with the 6.35% sales tax, as well as high average incomes resulting from its proximity to the New York City metropolitan area, make Connecticut the costliest state in the U.S. for taxes. The state is a center for the insurance industry, with Hartford Financial among the leading employers, and defense-related companies United Technologies and General Dynamics also have substantial operations there.

Think twice about where you live
It’s important to remember that the Tax Foundation‘s calculations are all based on aggregate measures, and they won’t necessarily reflect your personal Tax Freedom Day. But as a general rule, choosing where to live can make a big impact on your total tax liability, and while taxes aren’t necessarily the most important factor in making that choice, they definitely deserve at least some consideration.

Boeing’s choice of Illinois for a headquarters doesn’t change the fact that the aircraft-maker has a huge opportunity in front of it. But the 787 Dreamliner debacle has some wondering

Filed under:

There’s nowhere you can go in the United States to escape taxes entirely. But where you live can make a big difference in when you can declare independence from your tax burden every year.

Tax Freedom Day is an easy-to-understand concept that the nonprofit Tax Foundation has developed to help people understand just how much they have to pay in federal, state, and local taxes. By taking the total amount of taxes that people have to pay and then dividing it by their income, you can figure out what percentage of the year you spend working for Uncle Sam and your state and local tax authorities.

This year, Tax Freedom Day for the nation as a whole falls on April 18. But people in some states will have to wait quite a while longer before they’ve paid off their tax burden for 2013. Here are the seven most heavily taxed states in the U.S., along with a brief explanation of what makes their taxes so much higher than the rest of the country.

Marriage And Financial Inequality: Why Gay And Lesbian Couples Pay More

By The Huffington Post News Editors

It was a day many couples dream of for Mignon R. Moore, 42, and Elaine Harley, 43, who exchanged wedding vows at a beachside ceremony in Los Cabos, Mexico, in 2012. The native New Yorkers marked their 10-year relationship by obtaining a marriage license from the state. Unfortunately, they are not receiving all the benefits of a legal marriage because they have been living in Los Angeles for the past six years, where they are recognized not as spouses but as domestic partners.

“We only had a small window of time to get married in California before Prop 8 [the ballot initiative that stripped same-sex marriage], so we never got the opportunity,” says Moore, an associate professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Most people take for granted the financial safety net a legal marriage creates, says attorney Camilla Taylor, Marriage Project director at Lambda Legal, a national organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and people with HIV.

NY Renewable Energy Study Finds New York Could Soon Be Powered By Wind, Water And Sunlight

By The Huffington Post News Editors

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A new study says New York could get the power it needs from wind, water and sunlight by 2030 with a concerted push, though the state’s decade-long effort to significantly boost green energy shows how challenging that could be.

The study, led by researchers from Stanford and Cornell universities, provides a theoretical road map to how New Yorkers could rely on renewable energy within 17 years. It would require massive investments in wind turbines, solar panels and more from the windy shores off Long Island to sun-exposed rooftops upstate.

“It’s doable,” said co-author Robert Howarth, a Cornell professor of ecology and environmental biology. “It’s way outside of the realm of what most people are talking about … But I think people have been too pessimistic about what can be done.”

Xylem Inc. Value of Water Index reveals water is top infrastructure priority for New Yorkers

Xylem Inc. Value of Water Index revealswater is top infrastructure priority for New Yorkers

Water infrastructure surpasses subways as top concern; residents willing to pay more for safe water

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– A majority of New Yorkers, 82 percent, believe upgrading water and wastewater systems should be the main infrastructure focus for the city; two-thirds are willing to pay higher rates to see this happen. These findings were part of the 2012 Value of Water Index, a national survey on Americans’ perceptions of water, and werereleased today by Xylem Inc. (NYS: XYL) , a leading global water technology company.

More:

  • 70 percent of New Yorkers believe the U.S. water infrastructure system needs major reform or a complete overhaul.
  • 63 percent of New Yorkers are willing to pay an average of $8.30 more per month to finance water infrastructure upgrades.
    • This would mean approximately $188 million more per year for the city’s water infrastructure.
  • Nearly all New Yorkers, 91 percent, are concerned about our nation’s water infrastructure.
  • More than three-quarters of New Yorkers, 77 percent, would demand policymakers take action to address this issue, compared with 57 percent nationally.

“We launched the 2012 Xylem Value of Water Index to determine exactly what people think about water and what they are willing to do to ensure access to this vital resource,” said Gretchen McClain, Xylem president and CEO. “The New York data shows that New Yorkers are even more concerned about water infrastructure issues than the rest of the country, and they’re willing to do more to address the issue, and this is great news for the city’s water.”

New York City, through the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), has made significant investments in water infrastructure projects. Xylem recognizes and applauds this foresight, but New Yorkers still have cause for concern: city water systems are 150 years old, making them some of the oldest in the world. With an average daily demand of 1.2 billion gallons, they are also some of the largest. This combination of age and demand is straining the ability of these systems to function properly. GoogaMooga 2013: Festival Wises Up, Promises To Fix First-Year Mess

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Nearly a year since the inaugural Great GoogaMooga drew swarms of hungry New Yorkers to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, the food and music festival is set to return — older and wiser — May 17 to May 19.

Attendees at last year’s event may recall hour-long waits for food in blistering heat, spotty cell phone service that made finding friends nigh impossible and a fistfight over fried chicken. But those were growing pains, said Jonathan Mayers, co-founder of event producer Superfly Presents.

“You learn by doing it, and we’ve taken the feedback from the attendees and the participants,” Mayers explained in an interview with The Huffington Post. Several measures, he said, will dramatically improve the overall festival experience. “We’ve definitely listened and learned,” he said.

‘Apology Line’ Confession Hotline Allows New Yorkers To Anonymously ‘Fess Up (PHOTO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A Brooklyn man wants to provide guilty New Yorkers with a road to redemption. The method? An anonymous, judgement-free hotline that will accept all their apologies.

“I think forgiveness is a very powerful thing — and not everyone has an outlet for that,” the organizer of the hotline, who wishes to remain anonymous, said in an interview with the New York Post. “Some people can’t talk to family, don’t have religion or maybe they don’t even know how to forgive themselves.”

The organizer has been posting flyers across the five boroughs since early this year. Brooklyn’s Ditmas Park Corner blog found a flyer and posted a photo to its website.

David Floyd, Lead Stop And Frisk Plaintiff, Takes Stand In First Day Of Trial

By The Huffington Post News Editors

NEW YORK — A man whose name could go down in history books took the stand Monday in first day of the federal trial of New York City’s stop and frisk policy, testifying that police humiliated him when they twice stopped him near his Bronx home.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, a non-profit civil rights legal group, is bringing the lawsuit, Floyd v. City of New York, against the city, alleging stop and frisk as it is currently being practiced violates constitutional protections against racial discrimination and unreasonable search. Under the policy, New York Police Department officers may stop, question and frisk New Yorkers — but they are only supposed to do so if they have reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

Witnesses in the civil trial will include police officers and people like Jeffrey Fagan, a Columbia University law professor who will testify about alleged racial disparities in police stops. The case is a class action on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of black and Latino New Yorkers who are stopped by cops every year. But it is David Floyd, 33, the lead named plaintiff in the case, who will have his name attached to whatever decision U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin comes to.

Sheikhing Us Blind

By Allan Erickson

Muslim Brotherhood pressuring White House to release Blind Sheikh Sheikhing us Blind

It is true we tried in civilian court a known Islamic terrorist after the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman from Egypt, the”Blind Sheikh,” was convicted of seditious conspiracy, murder, plans to blow up other New York landmarks including the U.N., and a plot to kill Egyptian President Mubarak. Adbel-Rahman is serving a life sentence in a U.S. facility.

Among his other accomplishments:

  • Fiery preaching encouraging Egyptian army officers to assassinate Egyptian President Sadat;
  • Approving followers who killed 60 tourists in Luxor in an attempt to get the sheikh freed;
  • Issuing a fatwa from jail providing bin Laden theological permission to perpetrate 9/11

This has been a very bad guy for a very long time. He has the blood of innocents on his hands, literally thousands of victims.

Roughly six months ago, we learned the Obama Administration was preparing the way to release this maniac into Egyptian custody, now that the Muslim Brotherhood is in charge in Cairo.

We provide Egypt billions of dollars in aid and military hardware annually. We have given support to the current Muslim Brotherhood regime in other ways, despite mayhem and murder in the streets. In return, Egypt, led by Morsi of the Brotherhood, refuses to help us investigate Benghazi, helps Iran transport weapons through the Suez to attack Israel, and insists we release Abdel-Rahman.

No doubt John Kerry will pick up where Hillary Clinton left off and continue licking the boots of the Brotherhood, even as he acknowledges Obama’s Libyan war released tens of thousands of RPGs and other weapons of war to Al Qaeda, which is obviously not decimated as the administration claims.

Speaking of Al Qaeda, the U.S. got its hands on another bin Laden partner recently. But rather than put him on trial via the military at Gitmo, as in the case of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), Obama and Holder have decided to bring Sulaiman Abu Ghaith (SAG) to New York to stand trial in civilian court, where he will enjoy the right to remain silent, at taxpayer expense of course. SAG is Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law, one ‘suspected’ of being extremely helpful to KSM and bin Laden in killing 2,975 Americans on September 11, 2001.

Held in custody just blocks from Ground Zero, SAG no doubt enjoys reading a Koran untouched by infidels, a prayer mat, and Halal food specially prepared. He entered a plea of not guilty just days ago.

We are told SAG cannot be interrogated now because this is a criminal proceeding and he has rights. We are told he was brought to New York secretly and has attorneys appointed by the court to provide representation. Why do we extend the rights of U.S. citizenship to terrorists?

Many prominent Americans, including the minority leader in the Senate, have said SAG is an enemy combatant just like KSM. Therefore, he should be interrogated, held at Gitmo, and tried. Many others agree, no doubt the majority of New Yorkers and the family members of the victims of 9/11.
